  • From La Liga side Athletic Club in Bilbao, who only sign and field players with defined links to the Basque Country, to Liga MX giants, who solely select Mexicans, HITC Sevens takes a look at a number of football clubs with geographically restricted transfer and selection policies.

Bilbao fluctuates so much, going up and down the table every year, but so far they haven't relegated yet. Works pretty well for them to be restrictive

As far as I'm aware, Altınordu's policy is not restricted to only local players but rather to any Turkish player, in other words they just don't sign any foreigners. Maybe it has started off as the former but changed to the latter as the club progressed higher in the Turkish football ladder. Clubs playing in tier 3 and below aren't allowed to sign foreign players anyway, so it would make sense that they only fielded local players (probably players born in the Aegean Region of Turkey) when they were playing lower tier football.
That being said, Altınordu still has arguably the best and most modern academy system of any Turkish club and they probably feature more academy players in their senior squad than any other Turkish team. They also haven't changed their manager since the current president came and adopted the said transfer policy, which means he has been in the club for 9 years now. This is highly unusual in Turkey given that managers in Turkey tend to stay in their clubs for around 3 months in average and there have already been 5 managers sacked by/resigned from Süper Lig clubs during the first 3 weeks of this season.
As a final note, Altınordu has reached the promotion play-off final last year to be promoted to the Süper Lig but they lost to their local rivals Altay. Funny enough, upon reaching the play-offs and later the final, the club president has expressed multiple times his opinion that the club is not ready to play first tier football yet and he actually would rather his team not get promoted.

Loved how you included Altınordu. As a Turk and a Fenerbahçe supporter I can say something where even the supporters from the rival teams will agree on... And that is that Altınordu is a club that is impossible to hate. Thanks to them we now have star players in Europe like Çağlar Söyüncü, Cengiz Ünder and Burak İnce and more will come. They actually use Athletic Bilbao as a sample club when they're talking about their business model. There have been some criticism towards their policies for a good reason since they're focusing a lot on discipline. For instance it was rumoured that it turned out that when Cengiz Ünder came to Başakşehir that pretty much his whole was inside the training centre so that Başakşehir had to help him to get a better social life especially in İstanbul. Anyway, hopefully Altınordu took that criticism seriously because they're the best example in Turkey how a football club should be run and how they're doing it on the non-turkish way. Because is there anything that our Turkish clubs is known for is that lot of the boards want quick success and they start flow cash very irresponsibly which ends with same story... No success on the field after that, which ends up with mega-huge debts and don't get me started on a lot of talents that is bought by the big 4 clubs in Istanbul and Trabzon from Anatolia where they fail to adapt themselves to the new live life there. Sadly, that has happened too often. Ask players like Sezer Öztürk, Okan Koç and Sercan Yıldırım about how İstanbul ruined them. Don't get me started on the fallen former title contendors like Eskişehirspor, Gaziantepspor, Karabükspor, Orduspor, Mersin İdmanyurdu, Bursaspor, Kocaelispor and Sakaryaspor. I really feel for their supporters considering what kind of mess they have been forced to go through thanks to their stupid club boards who sat them in that mess. That's the reasons why Altınordu is seen as a good example in Turkish football for a good reason.

Particularly Woodlands Wellington had the highest attendance in their last 2-3 years before merging with Hougang United and ultimately ending the team from competing. Locals here prefer watching the EPL and european football rather than their own local football team, weird but it is what is is. Such a sad state we are in right now, even when the league is picking up once again and National team playing well. Fans are still not appreciating our local team 😭

    Greetings from Singapore.
Nice research on the Young Lions.
There's actually been calls the scrap the Young Lions for several years as it disincentivises Youth Development by the other clubs. and promotes a defeatist mentality since the young team are frequently trashed every week.
Apart from Albirex Niigata's satellite team, there's another team competing in Singapore, DPMM FC, a team comprising of only players from Brunei.
Funfact: from 2015 to 2020, the Singapore league has been won 4 times by Albirex and 2 times by DPMM.. So we've had a foreign champion for 6 years in a row (which is probably a record?).

another similar team to the Young Lions exists in the Philippine Premier League called the ADT (Azkals Development Team). The azkals being the name for the national team. The team is managed by the national team manager as well, and is under the control of the FA in order to develop homegrown players for the national team.
“The ADT was formed after it was observed that other countries participating in the southeast Asian games already had many players participating in professional leagues while Filipino players of the same age still involved in collegiate football. The development team is intended give "professional club environment" exposure to mainly youth players as well as select overage players from the senior national team such as individuals who recently recovered from an injury.”

Since you mentioned Indian Arrows , I would like to add something. In a 'cricket frenzy' country like India having a developmental team for the youngsters by the AIFF itself and having them play in the second top division itself is a big thing. Indian Arrows too are an U21 side and aims to provide playing time for players graduating from the U17 national side whom are yet to be picked up by top Indian clubs.
They play against other professionally run clubs in the league that have mix of both Indian and foreign players. And huh having the average age at not more than 19 years, the oldest player in the Indian Arrows setup will not be above 21.
So the football lovers in MY COUNTRY like me doesn't care where they finishes in the table as long as the players get to play and improve.

Athletic's transfer policy isn't necessarily because of Basque nationalism. There are a decent amount of Spanish nationalists or people who see themselves as equally Spanish/Basque who support the club. The policy started out as a "Bilbainada": doing something in an arrogant way because someone says you can't. Some team said they only won because they had British players, so they decided to only field local players out of spite, essentially. At first it was only local-local players from the Basque province of Bizkaia. Nowadays, they've expanded it to all of the Basque Country, with an emphasis on "formation" over birthright. In any case, being ethnically Basque doesn't necessarily make you eligible. In that sense, its sort of nationalist, in that it embraces the idea of the Greater Basque Country (I mean, they speak Basque in Navarre and France, too) but at the same time, its not an ethnic thing either. Their youth system will take in newly arrived immigrants without hesitation (like Diarra in their B team).
