Alongside Ribery and Neuer, Robben is the most crucial signing Bayern made in the last ... 30? 40? 50 years? I have to go back to the 60´s when Beckenbauer, Breitner, Hoeneß and Müller were scouted, or maybe one of the 90´s guys but in the modern era, Robben stands supreme
Van Gaal laid the foundation for a decade of Bayern dominance: -Signed Robben / Alaba / Gomez / -Switched Schweinsteiger to central midfield role -First Bayern coach to give significant playing time to Toni Kroos / Thomas Muller -Started playing 4-3-3 with dynamic wingers instead of the stale 4-4-2 with guys like Toni. I understand that this channel is English (although I'm not saying at all that Alfie ignores the rest of the world, quite the opposite), but Hakim Ziyech to Ajax has to be one of the greatest panic buys of all time too. Just weeks before, Ajax' technical director Marc Overmars had stated that Ziyech was a good player, but that Ajax wouldn't be pursuing him. Then Ajax had a slow start to the season, winning just 1 of their first three games in the Eredivisie, and losing the Champions League play off to Rostov of Russia, and Overmars does a 180 and signs Ziyech on deadline day in 2016. Four years on and Ziyech has helped put Ajax back on the map with great performances both domestically and internationally, reaching a Europa League final and coming within seconds of a CL final (both were thought by many to have become impossible for a Dutch team to reach), winning silverware domestically, as well as many individual rewards, including Ajax player of the year three out of four times, despite playing alongside players such as Frenkie de Jong, Mathijs de Ligt, Dusan Tadic and Andre Onana. A bonafide Ajax legend.

@@yagesh287 a player can contribute in many ways, besides the obvious - scoring goals. He can contribute with assists, aerial presence, skill on the ball, organizing the play - all things Eric Cantona did. What is probably harder to see is the mentality factor - he was a natural champion. Arrogant, determined and strong willed. A big game player, and he gave this mentality to the whole squad, especially on the young and upcoming players like Giggs, Bekham, Scholes, Neviles, Butt - the so called "class of 92". His influence was immense and each of them said it on many occasions. So if you just sitting there, counting goals - you're missing a lot from the beautiful game :)
Cantona wasn't even a panic buy. United had been interested in him for 2 years previous and Leeds just refused to respond. @@thuglifeinc4894 Yes, other clubs do it too, for example, my club, Ajax, is doing it now more than ever. However, first of all, I don't think this excuses Bayern and second of all the extend to which Bayern does it is way out of proportion. Ajax has bought Scherpen and Klaiber most notably, but apart from that most of our players have come from our academy or from abroad. With Bayern this is not the case, while they do buy some French or Spanish players from abroad, their academy has not been as important for their first team. To see how bad the problem you don't have to do a lot of research. Just look at Schalke, as they will be relegated after this season while Bayern will most likely win the league again (surprise surprise). However, if Bayern hadn't bought Goretzka, Rudy, Neuer and Nübel from them, then maybe the outcomes would have been completely different. Also if you want to compare them to Dortmund you have to look at Götze, Hummels and Lewandowski who were all bought just when Dortmund was competing with Bayern for the league. It is just anti-competitive how Bayern buys players from mostly teams they have to compete with and it ruins the Bundesliga for me and a lot of people.
@@wolf-wy6dg so the team shouldnt buy players they want just so it doesnt 'ruin it for you'? lol okay. Players like Lewandowski and Goretzka ran down their contracts to sign with Bayern, what should Bayern do then? Just tell them to keep playing at their teams so the league is competitive? Bayern does not bore the burden of making Bundesliga competitive. If anything other clubs in Germany dont pull their weight enough. They cant keep up their form for long and are mostly becoming selling clubs. Nothing Bayern can do in that. You people just hate on Bayern for no reason, Bayern has faults but this isnt one them. Also Sane and Boateng were playing in pl when Bayern bought them, so how does that affect other german teams? Your argument is completely flawed
@@wolf-wy6dg Your argument is flawed. The Schalke example isn't a good one. Neuer's the only one who joined when Schalke were a good team. Goretzka and Nübel joined when Schalke weren't competing. Also forgot to mention that Pavard was signed from a relegated Stutgart side Rudy joined from Hoffenheim on a free, dude. Also the Prem has better examples of the big team buying from the smaller ones and other big teams. Here's a few examples: Sterling to City from Liverpool Van Dijk, Clyne, Lallana and Manè joining Liverpool from Southampton United signing Tevez from West Ham and Tevez leaving for City after that. Rooney to United from Everton Jota to Liverpool from Wolves Henderson to Liverpool from Sunderland Lukaka to United from Everton. Mahrez to City Kante and Drinkwater to Chelsea Also your argument doesn't work when Bundesliga teams struggle to keep hold of their star players and academy products KDB left Wolfsburg to join City Werner and Havertz left Leipzig and Leverkusen to join Chelsea. Christensen joined Chelsea from Gladbach Dembele leaving Dortmumd to join Barcelona. There are more examples to go. Right now it looks Dortmund might sell Sancho to raise some money. Dortmund have a few examples of this too: Max Phillip (Freiburg) Thomas Delaney (Werder Bremen) Nico Schultz (Hoffenheim) Marco Reus (Gladbach) Hitz (Augsburg) Bürki (Freiburg) Hummels left Bayern to join Dortmund originally and joined back later. Brandt (Leverkusen) Thorgan Hazard (Gladbach) Dahoud (Gladbach) Are Dortmund guilty of making the league less competitve too?
Excuse me but Huntelaar was definitely not a flop for AC milan. He scored 1 goal every 2 games if you look at the minutes played, which is not bad at all. Games played never tell the whole story.

Robben the best! Arjan Robben still kicks ass! He played an amazing match, made a messi style dribble and beaten the whole enemy defense. He also scored 2 assists!
Lubo Moravcik was a panic buy for Celtic that became a club legend. When he signed he was 33 and totally unknown but ended up world class and had gone under the radar for most of his career playing for small clubs.
Loved lubo what a player he was but I wouldn't say he was a panic buy more of a hidden gem, those that knew of lubo knew just how good he could be if fit and motivated, when he was at saint Etienne he rejected moves to a few bigger clubs because he was happy where he was, if he took those moves he would have went on to be a big star
"world class"?!
@@needfoolthings yes world class just because someone doesn’t play for an English club doesn’t mean he wasn’t world class
Remember when Arteta was an exciting young left-winger until his knee was turned in welchs jelly and desperately tried to rehab his career at arsenal
I clicked just to check if Jack was on your list. Thanks. He is just so underrated. We kinda wasted his career cause he stayed in one of the worst Milan in the History while having the talent to play an important role in about any team in the world...
Very unlucky player with all his injuries at key moments...
I will always be grateful for what he has done in our squad. Grazie Jack di Cuore.
HUGE respect for recognizing bonaventura and his impact during Milan’s worst years
Cavani is the best panic buy this season tbh
I don't know that he's a panic buy tbh. Cavani has wanted to join Man U for a while, and very nearly did about 5 years ago
Right guard, reliable antiperspirant and apparently a decent barca manager too
Alfie is sneaking subliminal advertising into his videos
"I am after all an idiot"...best statement ever 🤣🤣🤣 Robben was the best
Don't forget Martin Braithwaite 💪

Kim Kallstrom scored a penalty in a shootout in the FA Cup semis and made one really cool pass against Swansea. Great piece of business by Wenger.
Nice to see Arteta and Mert get a mention on this. Thoes two did more for our club than people realize behind the scenes. Mikel as great on the pitch as well in his first few seaons, while Mertesacker and Koscielny were our best defensive partnership of the ast decade.
Soldado is a bit of a legend at the club too! Despite not recapturing the form that got him the move, the fans immediately connected with him and he still talks about his spurs experience!
I liked that you included a picture of Stewart Donald when talking about stupid decisions Alfie, you’re not wrong
What an underrated player Hyppia was. Fantastic player lifting (along with gerrard) a rather poor liverpool squad to some major trophies that they weren't really worthy of
Mate, that was a good one. Could you do a best 7 left backs in this century please. They are as loose as goalies
Dion Dublin to Villa. After Yorke forced his move to Man Utd, Villa signed Paul Merson. An incredible start to the season saw Villa top of the league, but Merson picked up an injury, Collymore was dogged by off-field issues and Villa were knocked out of the League Cup and UEFA cup in successive games. Desperate to regain momentum, Villa brought in Dublin, who went on to be considered a club favourite.
Though If he hadn't got injured for Man Utd that season we might have won the league!
Van Gaal laid the foundation for a decade of Bayern dominance:
-Signed Robben / Alaba / Gomez /
-Switched Schweinsteiger to central midfield role
-First Bayern coach to give significant playing time to Toni Kroos / Thomas Muller
-Started playing 4-3-3 with dynamic wingers instead of the stale 4-4-2 with guys like Toni.
Just like he laid the foundation at Barça for the next 10 years.
@@daarom3472 Yea I know he can be discribed as the father of the modern FCB, it all started with him and Robbery, Lahm and Schweinsteiger

@@chombus2602 wasnt recruited by van Gaal and imo was less instrumental than some of the others. He was the icing on the cake but was recruited after their treble season.
I would also add Cafu, from Roma to Ac Milan on a free transfer. Either the president of Roma or the manager said that he is 30yrs old and cannot give more.... While on AC Milan, Cafu won 1 Seria A, 2 CL, 1 WC, 1 or 2 Coppa Italia, and maybe more... until he retired at 37 or 38
I understand that this channel is English (although I'm not saying at all that Alfie ignores the rest of the world, quite the opposite), but Hakim Ziyech to Ajax has to be one of the greatest panic buys of all time too.

Day 19:Please make a video about DINAMO BUCHAREST...The story of our club is a hard one...And you telling it can really help us a lot,our club is clinging to survival, and we raised 2 milion euros to try to save the club...
Dinamo is one of the biggest clubs in Eastern Europe,it has 18 league titles and 13 domestic cup titles...It reached the Champions League Semi Final in 1984 after beating the holders of the trophy Hamburg...In the Semi Final they played against the great Liverpool side of the 80's...After the 89 revolution the club lost one of their greatest generation after their players where bought off by western clubs, similar to what happened to the clubs in East Germany that you already talked about...Corruption and neglect brought this giant of romanian football to it s knees...At the moment Dinamo is preety much the ONLY true historical side in Romania's top division...This team stood afloat thanks only to it's fans...In the summer some new spanish chiarman came and bought the club, brought players on huge contracts and left without paying them...The players just broke the contracts and the club accumulated even more debt...If the fans did not step in and accumulated 2 milion euros the club would have been dissolved...For anyone watching outside of Eastern Europe it might be hard to understand it s value...If u re English imagine Liverpool being dissolved...This club is OUR Liverpool, and it's stadium OUR cathedral...With all the fears of relegation, players leaving and managers coming in and leaving the club still managed to fight it's way to a Romanian cup Semi Final...Please,make one video about our story too...

Didn't know King Eric was a panic buy!!
Also, why no Cavani? Everyone expected him to fall flat on his face in the Premiership, but I was confident that he would be a success like Ibrahimovic. But he was definitely a panic buy!
Number 1 should be Braithwaite. He was a huge succes, he is gonna win a ballon d'or one day!
He contributed much in The Copa del Rey
Over Robben? Lol
I think David Luiz's return to Chelsea should be amongst them. we bought him for 50m back from PSG on deadline day, I remember it coming out of the blue completely. He helped us win the premier league with Conte and lift a couple other trophies, before being deployed to Arsenal to sabotage them

Ziyech should be in this list as he was a panic buy for his transfer to Ajax. Ziyech was forcing a move away from Twente but for almost the entire transfer period it looked like he was going Fenerbaçhe but at last moment he snaked us for Ajax instead of doing a good transfer to Fenerbaçhe
True, Ajax did not want to buy Ziyech due to his difficult character but the fans forced Ajax
The rumour at the time was that Leeds offloaded Cantona because he had become 'too friendly' with Lesley Ash, who was Lee Chapman's other half.
i was going to put that, glad i checked the comments!
Seven club legends that have played less that 100 games for there club.
King Eric's arrival at the Theater of Dreams can easily feature in any "top transfer" list, not just the panic buys :)
Why didn't he score enough goals though?
It was his legacy and impact upon the younger players that had most impact. Not just goals.
@@yagesh287 It's not always about goals dude
So thats at least 2 years worth of looking at him.... therefore not a panic buy. It only seems like that as they took full advantage of the fact Leeds tried to open talks themselves regarding trying to acquire Dennis Irwin

Van der vart was a huge boost for spurs
Robben to Bayern is not a panic buy, its more of a panic sell by Madrid, and Bayern just efficiently (as always) swoop in when they feels the price is right.
"If you really really must make a panic buy, then bay a dutchman":
Barcelona must have see that video before buying Luuk de Jong 😂

Duuude, as a Dutch long time Barca fan, I remember how Davids changed that season. But I never ever heard anyone mention it ever after.
Not even Henk Ten Cate, who loves to share inside stories from back in those days(like on what they thought of Messi before ever seeing him play, or once he noticed Ronaldinho bringing in prostitutes the night before a match. He let Ronnie know that he knew what was going, didn't tell Rijkaard anything. He even told Rijkaard to change Ronnie after he made two goals and looked tired).
Well done, well done.
In the intro you see Ziyech in Ajax shirt while talking about NOT panic buys, but I'm pretty sure he was. Ajax wasnt really interested in him until a couple of bad results and media pressure changed their minds.

Do a top 10 Bayern Munich players poached from their rivals, it's disgusting how only a handful of players are not originally from other Bundesliga teams.
Davies, Sanè, Tolisso, Roca, Coman, Musiala.
You sure about that.
Alaba counts too I guess
Martinez
Boateng
Every team does it.
Dortmund signed Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt from other Bundesliga teams too.
@@thuglifeinc4894
Yes, other clubs do it too, for example, my club, Ajax, is doing it now more than ever.
@@thuglifeinc4894
Also Sané is originally from Schalke and Boateng is originally from Hertha BSC
Also forgot to mention that Pavard was signed from a relegated Stutgart side
Rudy joined from Hoffenheim on a free, dude.
Also the Prem has better examples of the big team buying from the smaller ones and other big teams.
Here's a few examples:
Sterling to City from Liverpool
Van Dijk, Clyne, Lallana and Manè joining Liverpool from Southampton
United signing Tevez from West Ham and Tevez leaving for City after that.
Rooney to United from Everton
Jota to Liverpool from Wolves
Henderson to Liverpool from Sunderland
Lukaka to United from Everton.
Mahrez to City
Kante and Drinkwater to Chelsea
Also your argument doesn't work when Bundesliga teams struggle to keep hold of their star players and academy products
KDB left Wolfsburg to join City
Werner and Havertz left Leipzig and Leverkusen to join Chelsea.
Christensen joined Chelsea from Gladbach
Dembele leaving Dortmumd to join Barcelona.
There are more examples to go.
Right now it looks Dortmund might sell Sancho to raise some money.
Dortmund have a few examples of this too:
Max Phillip (Freiburg)
Thomas Delaney (Werder Bremen)
Nico Schultz (Hoffenheim)
Marco Reus (Gladbach)
Hitz (Augsburg)
Bürki (Freiburg)
Hummels left Bayern to join Dortmund originally and joined back later.
Brandt (Leverkusen)
Thorgan Hazard (Gladbach)
Dahoud (Gladbach)
Are Dortmund guilty of making the league less competitve too?
goddammit i miss Bonaventura. he played with so much passion.
Excuse me but Huntelaar was definitely not a flop for AC milan. He scored 1 goal every 2 games if you look at the minutes played, which is not bad at all. Games played never tell the whole story.
Torres was a hit!!
that 1 CL goal against Barcelona was worth 100mill!!
United only went for Eric Cantona after failing to sign David Hirst from Sheffield Wednesday, true story.
