Gilby hasn't changed much at all. He is the dedicated young man I met late one night in a small 8track recording studio, Opus One in old Torrance back late 1970's. Here was this young kid with a pocket of money from some minimum wage job, touting a well used guitar, I think a Duo Sonic. He was focused on his own solo sessions recording when he could , his own written material and not the style that was trending at the time. He was rough but what made him special he was eager to learn the studio and he progressed so fast . The studio owner/ engineer and I enjoyed watching him develop these few songs he was recording then. We couldn't be prouder seeing him play with GnR and on to so many other gigs. Gilby believed and stuck with what he liked and look how far he's gone...😎
@@aleksandarfrick2656I love Izzy too. That's why I also love Gilby. He did an amazing job filling in for him. It wasn't his fault Izzy left, it was Axl's fault. We are lucky Gilby was there to play Izzy's parts perfectly for a couple more years. Nobody could replace Izzy, but Gilby was the next best thing at the time. He didn't try to be Izzy or replace Izzy, he was the best we could hope for.
Thank you Gilby! You're the best. We wouldn't have those great UYI shows like Tokyo, Paris or Saskatoon without him. I'll always appreciate what he did. You're not a real G N' R fan if you don't love Gilby.
Cure Me or Kill Me is still one of the greatest rock songs to ever come out, and Pawnshop Guitars is a gem. Always a delight hearing stories from this guy. Thanks for this, Dammit! \m/
St Louis Rocked ! it was super fun hanging with Gilby & The band ! Troy Patrick Farrell & EJ Curse hanging in The Well !! priceless stories with Teddy Zig Zag on the bus !! Super cool !! Tequila Brothers !! Quick weekend Vegas to St Louis & back !!
I meet Todd outside a show in Halifax in 2012. He signed my Apocalyptic Love CD, but when he saw my Appetite for Destruction CD, he said to make sure Slash signed it. That was cool.
Great interview! I remeber that band Smile! They use to play at these clubs in pasadena, Pookies and the Ice house. They were the local up and coming band at that time!
Gilby is truly a good guy. Never seems to have anything bad to say about anyone, and a great musician. Anyone that could learn the entire Guns n Rose's library in 2 weeks, with a large part of hadn't even been released yet is nothing short of amazing. It really shows the talent and abilities Gilby has as a guitar player. How many guitar players, then or now really able to do that? Always pleasent always smiling 😎🎸
Cool episode. That rick derringer comment was interesting considering he was finger tapping shredding before the first vh album come out. Listen to derringer live lp's from the 1970s.
my biggest regret is when Gilby came to Little old Red Deer alberta and played at a bar here. I had the opportunity to easily go and see him and i opted out! Todd Dammit!! lol That at the the time would of been the 3rd member of GNR i would have seen. I shook Slashs hand in Edmonton and ran into Axl in edmonton also at west edmonton mall!
Just found this channel. Great interview! I will subscribe. And good luck with the New Slash album. Got my purple vinyl spinning all the timex haha Cheers from Norway!
Guilby is so cool and level headed and as you say direct line. No Wonder he got fired from GN'R LOL He'd be such a great band mate that would help keep the wheels on. I had Pawn Shop Guitars in my late teens and listened to it a lot. That introduced me to Dead Flowers. Very cool guy and I loved this interview. Wish we saw more Guilby. Please have him back.
hei just want to say, Todd i saw you twice with SMKC - Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. what a blast to be able to shot you with my camera. looking forwrad to see you guys again down on the road.
Killer interview Todd!! Love your interviewing style man and always enjoy these chats, which is how they come across, like two friends sitting around having a beer and talking music. You're a fan but also a peer you know? And your Canadian dude! Respect! Cheers from Montreal!
I always thought that Gilby was really likeable and genuine guy. This interview just confirms that.
He is an amazing human -teamtk

"I always wanted to figure out how to have loud guitars in a pop band"
It kinda evolved into that with the hair metal thing
and nirvana
I love the Zemaitis story. Those guitars really were special.
Increíble! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Looking very much forward to this one.
And I even caught it when broadcast.

The Gospel Truth arrived today, realy cool album!
Nice for someone to mention Rick Derringer.
Love the Chat 💖💖
Cool!
I've got a couple Hercules stands for my Flying V & Les Paul (one standing, one hanging).
Hello !!! Nice see you
Thank you. Great interview Todd 👏🇵🇱
Good interview. A few commercials are acceptable but that was a little excessive.
We don't add the number commercials, youtube is in charge of that. They do that to keep this free for you. -teamtk
Great video - but 10+ ads... sheesh
That is RUclips in order to keep this content free for everyone. -teamtk
Gilby e stato un degno sostituto di Izzy Stradlin'. Peccato perché i Guns potevano durare a lungo se non fosse stato per il caratteraccio di Axl.
A bit short but it was cool.
Always leave room for a part two -teamtk
