  • Sword of the Stranger (Japanese: ストレンヂア 無皇刃譚 Hepburn: Sutorenjia Mukōhadan?, Stranger Mukōhadan) is a 2007 Japanese anime film directed by Masahiro Andō and produced by animation studio Bones. The film follows Kotaro, a young boy who is hunted by a group of swordsmen from Ming Dynasty China for mysterious reasons. Among the group is a fearsome Western fighter named Luo-Lang, whose only desire is to find a worthy opponent. Kotaro and his dog meet "No Name", a nameless ronin who is haunted by memories of his past which have led him to avoid drawing his sword ever again. When the Ming clash with a Sengoku-era feudal lord, a proud general, and monks torn between faith and survival, the reason behind the Ming group's pursuit tests the bond between Kotaro and No Name.

    This fight is literally perfect. It doesn’t hold your hand with slow fighting, nor does it overwhelm the viewer with flashy visuals. It is a perfectly paced, perfectly choreographed, and perfectly animated fight between two expert martial artists.

    I actually really like how the fight ended. It showed the two fighters as being equally matched in strength and skill, with the final blows being the same maneuver. The only difference between them was that Lou-Lang was very serious and had little empathy towards others; whereas Nanashi tended to be more sentimental, which was what ended up saving his life as the jewel that carried little monetary value (as stated by the boy earlier in the film) held significant emotional value to Nanashi and was ultimately vital to deflect an otherwise fatal blow. Very poetic in its own way.

    • @Leynx-Et-Fenrir

      You are spot on. In fact, if it is jade, it worth more than Nanashi wanted to admit (might be because like raw diamonds nowadays, you can't do much with them beside selling them to a jeweller, or it is just his way to say that he doesn't need payback) but that stone bought his life :)

      @@Anuwabu I don't see a clear skill gap, I see someone with more of an offensive mindset, overconfident as you mentioned, and nanashi with more to lose, and emotions linked to losing, pain but equally to love. I see that nanashi understands his weaknesses (poor vision, massive exhaustion, wounds, perhaps a concession in athleticism and variety of moves) and baits, bides his time for his best chance. That's more so the sign of someone more skilled and experienced in my opinion and closer to its definition, symbolized by his physical and mental scars. I see the blonde guy as more of prodigy who in being so, along with holding relatively little in other value systems, failed to actually develop skills that would allow him to do well against an opponent that actually matched him in other categories. I think this reflects your last line, more so, which was much more poetic and succinct, but I disagree about the skill gap. The blonde guy's mentality and overconfidence in this scene could also be interpreted as unconsciously parasuicidal and self destructive, in his thirst to feel something: a contrast that is made as well. Overall awesome comment thread

    Fun fact; there were originally two sequels planned but the film "underperformed" at the Japanese box office due, even though it could be considered a success financially. Supposedly there was alot of inner conflict among creative and key animators against some of the producers and lower level animators, it's been speculated that the reason they had a revolving door of animators is because they weren't happy with the lack of "females" in the film and the producers wanted to make the kid into a preteen girl to check the thirsty weeb box. Luckily creative stuck to their guns and we got this masterpiece. Kinda sucks we never got the sequels.

    This fight always makes me tear up cause of how symbolic it is. The treasure Kotaro gave Nanashi saved his life, but he also saved him in a way, from the guilt he felt over his past. He swore to never unsheathe his sword because he killed children, but he drew it once more to save one. Throughout the fight you can just feel that Nanashi doesn’t care if he dies, so long as he does the one thing he should’ve done back then; save an innocent child.

I found that really cool how the whole movie these two were looked down on by the true blood martial artist of their respective factions as western barbarians but they both exhibited the traits that all the other warriors took pride in their cultures. Neither one used dirty tactics like doping nor did they have personal gain they simply live fought and died by the sword. In a way this made the movie more unique.

      Ummm... the Chinese have made fighting to win a matter of state policy, let alone martial arts and personal combat. "The Art of War" explicitly tells generals that it is inhumane to be "honorable" when less people die from a short, sharp conflict where one side "cheats."
      Martial artists are honorable to other martial artists because they're not actually fighting, they're sparring. In a real fight they'd be the first to eye gouge you, kick you in the balls, and then snap your neck without so much as an experimental jab to warn you.

    Crazy how the green treasure saves him from the fatal blow that came from the boy he sought to protect his life. Not only that but the swords get swapped during the fight. On the one hand, one sword still represents death, hubris, and ambition of power. On the other, the sword represents sorrow, regret, and the search for atonement. There's a kind of poetry to the end of the fight where Nanashi's sword spares his life and forgives him for his past sin when he finally decides to use his sword for the right reason.

Aside from the amazing animation and choreography, the fact that he's fighting with such ferocity and determination, not for his own life but that of the child. Also, prior to this scene where it shows the flashback of him being forced to kill two children, only to draw upon that regret and shame as a driving force to save Kotaro. These two themes collide and underscore the life lesson that your past does not define who you can be today. Nanashi the selfless hero.

    the movie played on some pretty standard tropes of the genre. two swordsmen of great skill, both mirror the other. niether wants to use the pain-killing medicine. the close shot of their eyes before the fight starts is meant to show us their similarities. luo-lang is what nanashi could have easily turned into if nanashi didn't have that one experience where he was forced to kill children. nanashi had the same sense of almost nihilistic devotion towards honing his craft just for the sake of honing his craft, but the shock of using it to the ends he did awakened him to a sense of morality that he didn't know he had. because of this, his skills are subpar to luo-lang's -- nanashi stops pursuing perfection in swordsmanship, where luo-lang does not, and he struggles against the superior swordsman. outmatched, he goes to trade killing blows, his only intent to kill this man he sees so much of himself in. a lethal blow from luo-lang is turned slightly by the jade he received from kotaro, the only external element to what is otherwise a pure contest of skill. so the last fight isn't just a battle between two swordsmen, it's also a battle between nanashi and the part of himself he wishes weren't a part of him, but irrevocably is. in killing luo-lang, he kills that part of himself as well, and atones for what he's done. even though it's pretty simple (and a little ham-fisted), it's still a powerful story of redemption that's pulled off well.

So, maybe I think Nanashi is quite formidable an opponent for Luo. I think so at least.)

With all the other chinese mercenaries and such being dead, Lou-Lang would probably just abandon the mission to sacrifice the kid. All he wants is a fight worth his incredible skill, and he will have it, whether Nanashi likes it or not. And that's all there is to this final fight. Naruto and bleach take place in a fictional world while this movie is realistic. You expect them to have last min power ups. They are just humans.

    • @Arcaryon
      @Arcaryon 2 года назад +3

      @@eleberium1836 No offense to your opinion but to me, the issue is that a lot of the time, animation is difficult to budget so what happens is that instead of a detailed fight scene, you end up with exactly what he described because the mere visual capability can not keep up witht the finacial restrictions.
      Flashbacks are not bad on their own but when they are constant, it begins to get old really fast, same with last minute power ups. They can exist for sure and are often used in a meaningful and educated way but even more often they feel like a last minute solution to resolving the conflict and can seem really random.
      Naruto, for instance, has some really good flash backs and power ups BUT even this legendary show can have some instances where these things just do not hit their mark.

    i feel like this is a fight that's truly timeless. back in 2007, i'd say it was undisputedly the greatest fight in anime. these days, i think some fights come close, but this one is still the best sword fight of all time. the weight behind the sword clashes and movements, the sound effects, the choreography in general ofc, and there's no useless dialogue. not only that, but it manages to be flashy without getting in the way of the character movements and how they interact with each other and the environment. in terms of smoothness, modern anime definitely have that edge, but i feel like animators now have forgotten how important weighted movements are and how much more impressive it is to show off some complex body movements instead of covering it up with flashy effects.

      No flashbacks, no chatting mid fight, no monologues, no reaction shots so a spectator can tell us they can't keep track of their movements, no fluff. Most anime pump their fights full of manga dialogue rather than letting the fight play out. Demon Slayer's greatest moment of animation is the conclusion to the Upper Moon 6 fight. I had my jaw hanging open most of the episode because the animation quality skyrocketed. However, that fight still has unnecessary pauses so we can hear characters monologue and it seriously hurts the fight. Some of the monologuing even breaks the canon, with a character having to finish their dialogue while keeping equal pace with someone many times faster than them.

    Just my addition to the debate on whether Nanashi died or not:
    My opinion: No.
    Here's my reasoning:
    - Take into account the frigid cold they're in. I remember taking a forensics class in which my teacher said that cold air constricts the blood vessels and heavily limits the blood flow. So, assuming thwy never bandaged the wound after the fight, the blood trail in the snow would depict a more minor loss of blood.
    - The temperature also fights infection. As y'all probably know, very low temperatures like that also cause bacteria that would cause infection to become inactive.
    - Think about the fact that dried blood also stops bleeding too. Once it dries over the wound, assuming it isn't disturbed or the person doesn't move too much, the blood will stop and give a chance for the platelets to do their job. And after that fight, Nanashi didn't do much moving. And considering his cuts were relatively minor to what he inflicted on Luo Lang, I think this would apply.
    - Pure ambition. I really don't think that after all they've been through, that Nanashi would let himself die like that and not be able to guide Kotaro and be with him in his life. And obviously, the guy's got a lot of willpower, which we shouldn't underestimate. So, I think he toughed it out.
    Just my opinion. Other thoughts are welcomed.

    • @Androidbrotherhood1
      @Androidbrotherhood1 6 лет назад +27

      He's dead. The ending shots and conversations all lend to him dying. Even the boy looks sad but happy at the same time with his final smile. If he had lived they wouldn't have shown the blood splatter and trail. That was a symbol of his death.

    • @metaljacket8128
      @metaljacket8128 6 лет назад +77

      Androidbrotherhood1 In your opinion, maybe. But I fail to see how the conversations "led to" him dying. And they probably showed the blood splatter for realism and emotional impact.
      If your argument is entirely cinematic, rather than logical (since you in no way addressed King of Hearts' logical points) then tell me: why have Nanashi avoid the fatal strike at all? Why have Kotaro's trinket save him, and even have him comment later on how handy it turned out to be? It's not very handy if all it did was prolong his pain before death.
      Logically *and* cinematically, he's alive.

      @_I02_ 6 лет назад +2

    I watched a lot of anime but this one will always be my favourite. It doesnt need 10 seasons or any unnecessarily love to make this movie great as it is. It already has a great story, great music, wonderful characters and brilliant fight scenes.
    I really wished, we could have known why the Chinese exactly needed Kotaro for the „sacrifice“ and not any random child.
    Or a bit more of Nanashis Backstory.
    Also i really wished that a second movie comes out, but now i‘m happy there isn‘t a second one. I don‘t want them to screw the story in any way, even if one of the CEO from Bones Studios (the Studio which made SOTS) confirmed he has the whole Story ready for the next movie, but not enough money to produce it. Maybe it‘s better that way. Again, for me personally, the best Anime out there!

    2:31 This fucking part right here. Someone awhile back made a thoughtful post about this , roughly: In most anime you see them discuss the workings of a fight. Where the weakness is, why a certain move was so "amazing". But this scene has none of that. No crazy monologue by some onlooker of the fight about how intricate and skilled the each fighter is. Just a beautifully animated attack-riposte. We can discuss ,extensively , how amazingly just those ~5 seconds of animation are. This goddamn movie.

    Both these guys are legendary swordsmen, probably the two best going around at the time. It does look like Lou Lang is the more talented fighter, from what we see here. But if you've seen the movie you'd know Nanashi was exhausted going into this fight. A building collapsed on him, he had to fight several other warriors before this, he fell off a staircase from high up and he had blood stained in his eyes (0:38) So Lou Lang definitely had the advantage, not to mention Nanashi hadn't drawn his sword from his sheath in many years, so he'd be rusty. Nanashi was definitely at a disadvantage in this fight and still pulled out the victory, was it luck that won him the fight? possibly but this is more like Lou Lang at 100% vs Nanashi at 70-80%. You can see Nanshi getting stronger as the battle went on longer. In summation Lou Lang "Probably" lost this fight due to unfortunate circumstances, but Nanashi was definitely not at 100% going into this battle. So who knows who was better, I'd say both in their prime, then pretty even 50/50

    Nanashi uses a Katana. What Luo Lang uses here was probably a Xiu Chun Dao, a standard issue sabre for the Ming Dynasty special task force "Jing Yi Wei" (The silk-clothes guards) reporting directly to the Emperor of China. Katana is traditionally a two-handed weapon so therefore it is heavier to wield, while Xiu Chun Dao was a single handed weapon but designed with a longer handle so that it could be wielded with two hands, it is also slightly lighter so it can be drawn & wielded faster, that's why you're seeing Luo Lang mostly uses acrobatic moves with this sword because this is how it was meant to be used. However in a direct clash, you noticed Luo Lang had to hold the tip of the blade to suppress Nanashi because his blade is lighter compared to Nanashi's katana.
