interesting. but this is an example of WIT being smart with their use of CGI. I'm going to ruin this scene for the people who have a hard-on for episodes being done 2d hand drawn animation. If you look carefully you will notice that a lot of the backgrounds were done in CGI. This was done because the dynamic camera movements would have been impossible to do within the amount of time they were given for this season. so they ended up doing the backgrounds in CGI and have the camera move in the virtual space. Thus allowing the animator to bring his A-game for animating Levi and all of the environmental objects he interacts with.
This is my favourite piece of animation. The action shots, how the camera follows the ODM hooks, how it captures the motion and tension. It's beautiful. I can't even imagine how much work and dedication this required
Attack on Titan is an ensemble series and Levi is one of its core characters. I don't know how anyone could see him as a side character. Hell, S3, Pt. 1 was mainly his story.

At 1:16 you can clearly see Levi obliterate the door but then at 1:24 you can see that the door is back BUT then by 1:39 is gone again. Still my favorite scene of all time.

I see a lot of jokes about the animators getting depressed once a Levi scene comes up but the opposite was actually the case. Arifumi Imai (the animator who was responsible for this scene as well) actually felt really unmotivated after season 2 and read the manga to get new inspiration. When he saw Levi‘s epic fight scenes, he actually called dibs on them and asked Wit Studio if he could start working on season 3 before the rest of the team. The remaining action animators „complained“ that Imai really took all the good bits for himself. So in reality the action animators were most excited to work on these scenes. It was actually a thing during season 1 and 2 that the animators constantly tried to one up each other which contributed to the high quality of the action sequences
this scene alone had more budget and more resources invested into than the whole Seven Deadly Sins season 3 edit: not AOT S4 tho, that situation is different , MAPPA didn't have enough time otherwise it would look amazing but looks great either way

The best part of this scene is that it's obvious that Levi is THE master of using ODM gear. Before or since, we've never seen another character maneuver anywhere near as quickly or effectively as he does in this sequence, and he does it all while keeping tabs on where all of his opponents are at any given moment and dodging gunshots.
I dunno. If you watch the OVA of him getting recruited, there was a reason he was caught. I think that Erwin studied him before he we t to capture him. There is a reason why Miche was still humanity's strongest soldier before Levi. Anyone else who thinks otherwise know that Levi would be in a jail cell about now.
I mean let's be real. Mastering the 3D Maneuvering Gear is already hard enough, but Levi's agility is BEYOND superhuman with it. Every movement leading up to the bar is unreal precision, the time it takes for hooks to reach their target, how much gas he uses for thrust, disconnection, sliding, angle, momentum, all of it is a ballet that, while a pain in the ass to animate, has such evocative FORCE AND GRACE behind it.

@@tinfoil1232 The key frame animation scene was done BY A SINGLE MAN. The rest was done in 2 months by other people. But Arifumi made this. 1 month of working for his part,then 2 months on the other scene helping other guys = 3 months for 3 min of animation.
Wow! If you slow it down .25x at the 1:08 mark, while hes zipping really fast through the alley the animators actually took the time to show his reflection as he goes past the windows. That's insane dedication to the art. Right down to the detail

The amount of details of animating in the scenes. If you put 0.25X speed on (1:08), you can see Levi’s brief reflection on the mirror as he passed by. Props to the animators who animated the scenes! ✨
I noticed that Kenny has only been as happy as this when he fights Levi and his team. Because he gets to see the kid he raised all grown up with some mad new skills.
Kids are really something aren't they? One minute you're teaching them to grip a knife in their tiny hands. The next thing you know, they're single-handedly slaughtering your entire squadron. They grow up so fast.
I like how Levi looked extra hot in this scene where he is literally getting assassinated and murdering his enemies. Meanwhile when he in a normal situation, he looks like a grumpy gremlin.

I see a lot of jokes about the animators getting depressed once a Levi scene comes up but the opposite was actually the case. Arifumi Imai (the animator who was responsible for this scene as well) actually felt really unmotivated after season 2 and read the manga to get new inspiration. When he saw Levi‘s epic fight scenes, he actually called dibs on them and asked Wit Studio if he could start working on season 3 before the rest of the team. The remaining action animators „complained“ that Imai really took all the good bits for himself. So in reality the action animators were most excited to work on these scenes. It was actually a thing during season 1 and 2 that the animators constantly tried to one up each other which contributed to the high quality of the action sequences

The best part of this scene is that it's obvious that Levi is THE master of using ODM gear. Before or since, we've never seen another character maneuver anywhere near as quickly or effectively as he does in this sequence, and he does it all while keeping tabs on where all of his opponents are at any given moment and dodging gunshots.
I think he moved faster (s. 3 spoiler) in his fight with the beast titan.

I mean let's be real. Mastering the 3D Maneuvering Gear is already hard enough, but Levi's agility is BEYOND superhuman with it. Every movement leading up to the bar is unreal precision, the time it takes for hooks to reach their target, how much gas he uses for thrust, disconnection, sliding, angle, momentum, all of it is a ballet that, while a pain in the ass to animate, has such evocative FORCE AND GRACE behind it.

This is the single best feat of animation I’ve ever seen in anime. The fact that it kept detail in every frame without compromising the animation
I noticed that Kenny has only been as happy as this when he fights Levi and his team. Because he gets to see the kid he raised all grown up with some mad new skills.
