I cried when I saw your Grandmother's cookie cutters....my Mom had several of the same ones including the xmas tree! I was allowed to cut out the cookies as a child, now I bake with my 5yr old grandson...we made gingerbread reindeer cookies for his preschool snack just this past weekend. LOVE all of your videos and I have learned so much. MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅
My dad and I did a gingerbread house every year when I was a kid. He did cheat and build the house our of Styrofoam, but decorating was always fun. Haven't made one since he passed but maybe it's time to start a new tradition
Erin you changed my life! I watched your pie series and bought both your books! Thank you so much! You are an incredible teacher and I love how you address mistakes as a no biggie and show us what we can do! That attitude really helped me to no get discouraged. Finding your videos was huge ❤️
Hi Erin, and a Very Merry Christmas! Thanks for an amazing video. As a retired pediatric nurse, in my mid 70s I love to watch kids baking anything. Your video has truly made my holiday happier. This is what Uncle Ray used to do for his nieces and nephews, then his great nieces great nephews. The kids will always remember these special holiday gifts. Ray Moderski
Erin, can I just say, you a truly a lovely human being. I love your positivity and I have learned so much from watching your videos. You have definitely made me a better baker. I hope you have a great holiday season.
As always a very informative video but those children stole the show, they were adorable and they are what Christmas is all about. Happy holidays to you and your family.
I enjoy watching you love what you are doing. You were literally the kid in the candy store. Happy holidays to you and your support staff who reap the extra benefits in their job.
I wanna come to the gingerbread house party!!! love it...so much fun!!! you are such an inspiration and your warmth and love for what you do is inspiring :) so much fun to just watch this episode!
Erin, your videos are just AMAZING! You entertain as you teach and I LOVE your style! I’m learning so much from you and can’t wait to show my 20 year old daughter your videos. Your love for baking is infectious and you have inspired this lifelong baker that pastry making isn’t so scary 😂 Looking forward to trying pastry making and upping my baking game. Thank you Erin and looking forward to future videos!
I wish that I knew all of this back in the 1980's when I tried to be a super mom & baked a gingerbread house from scratch & decorated it, & didn't quite know how 2 put the roof on so it ended up looking like a gingerbread condemned building!😲🤦🏽♀️Ur awesome, & thanks 4 the video, bc now I can do better w/ my granddaughter.☃️☺️❤️
I can’t believe I did this with 25+ kids every year for 30 years as a teacher but I did 🤪 - it was a sugary semi-chaotic scene but my kids loved it! One of the tricks was adding colorful cereal to the candy mix like ‘Trix’ it goes a long way for the money AND it’s light weight so it doesn’t fall off which can be an issue with those rooftops - hope everyone gets to do a gingerbread house at least once in their lifetimes- it’s such a magical experience- Merry Christmas! 🎄
Awesome I've been so looking forward to this, I knew you were going to do it at some point. I absolutely love doing gingerbread houses, since not all people like gingerbread I do also do shortbread houses. But let's be real the cookies really only there to hold the icing and the candy LOL. I have made houses with special needs kids which was so awesome and I loved it so much. I like to make all kinds of different sizes and I have even made a train where all the cars full of homemade candy and I made stacked cookie trees and train station it was a whole thing that took up the entire kitchen table. I created the whole thing while they were sleeping, even my ex woke up to the Train on the table and had no idea I was doing it. And I used cotton candy for snow in some areas. I always make templates, Mark what they are and keep them. Even if you don't want to recreate the same house over and over if you save your templates you can use pieces from each different one, adding fencing and stuff like that also just upgrades it. I remember in high school I had a art class technically my senior year was almost all electives cuz I had everything taken care of and we all had to pick a partner and the historical landmark that we were making and you got to pick your material, I can't remember remember the name of the house but it was this big giant two-story thing and we built it out of graham crackers and royal icing. We had to take it to the office for storage everyday oh, it actually went on display at the school because they liked it so much. And I actually went back and saw the teacher after I graduated and she said they still talk about about our building and that nobody has tried doing it before or sense. I've always loved cooking and baking and art, gosh I'd go camping and fishing and be cooking a gourmet meal over the campfire and then go sit and draw landscape. But unfortunately I now have permanent nerve and muscle damage along with some other stuff and I can no longer work in professional kitchens because I'm a liability along with unfortunately always being in severe pain
Yes!!! I've been looking for a good gingerbread recipe and this popping up for me from the great Erin McDowell is like a Christmas miracle!!! I'm hitting like even before I watch because I know this is going to be great, my kids are going to love making their own gingerbread houses from scratch this year! Thank you so much, Erin and I hope you have a lovely holiday!!
I used to make lighted gingerbread houses as gifts for my friends. It was so much fun seeing Erin interact with the kiddos and am guessing that she’ll have a few interns from this group. Thank You for this fun video.
Try the ribbon trick for the roof. Lay a ribbon or string across both walls. Don't glue those two spots, though. Put the roof on and tie the ribbon together at the peak. Once dry pull the ribbon out.
Erin, you are killin it. This was magical. I have made dozens of gingerbread houses over the years, won some prizes and some hearts of wee ones but nobody ever explained to me how it was done. Can't wait to make another one. You are a genuis. Yay for Food 52 . Love y'all.
in Europe we don't really do gingerbread houses but I like the idea and I might try a simple version. I don't have a mixer but I have a bowl and spoon! 😅
Erin is like a favorite Aunt who let's you sit on a stool at the table while she bakes. She even let's you lick the paddle. She makes baking approachable. I love everything about this experience.
I love love love your videos! I was smiling throughout this one the whole time! Oh, to be a child in your neighborhood especially at Christmastime! Merry Christmas to you and your crew! Please don't ever stop!
Erin has inspired me to bring gingerbread houses to all my nephews to decorate for Christmas Eve. Doesn't matter that they are all over 16... they'll still have fun!
I remember one year my mom made a giant ginger bread house for a Christmas party. It started to cave in so she filled the inside with melted chocolate to keep it standing. I think she was upset at her mistake but it turned out to make It even better. I remember standing around it with all my cousins as we broke pieces off and dipped it in the chocolate. We were all so happy and I still remember it after 25 years ❤
Thank you Erin! You are so good teacher and baker! Can you believe I have never made a gingerbread house and I am a cake artist!🤦🏻♀️👀😬 and looking at you I want to make my first one! Thank you! Please do not stop smiling! The world appreciate you that so much!😉🤗
Is there anyone who watches Garden Answers videos? Erin making the gingerbread house made me think about Laura and the project she did for the garden centre's windows. A gingerbread village ALL MADE FROM CARDBOARD. Those blessed with artistic minds leave me breathless at times.
Erin, thank you so much. Now I can make my granddaughters gingerbread to build houses. I buy the kits, but would much rather make the gingerbread. I have learned so much from you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Hope you have a beautiful Christmas. I have the same humidity as you as I live in Wilmington, de

Never let fear stop you! ! I just recommend you have everything purchased prepared and ready for the big day lol and then just have fun with it
Start small. First one I did was more like a rustic tiny cabin than a house. You can do it,

My adult brothers and I all asked to do houses at my parents this year. More “grown ups” should gingerbread, I say!
Such good tips.
Please make a video about chocolate chip cookies and brownies! That would be ❤
cookies, houses , are some much more surprises in Christmas?
As soon as my joints are up to it, I’m making one ❤️
Having the neighborhood children there and letting them decorate took it "up a notch"! You made their day.
Ditto!
