  • Cool tomatoes and other vegetable plants with this easy to put up/easy to take down shade canopy using 30% or 40% shade cloth. It cuts down the heat but lets the plants grow. You'll only need it for a few months in the summer, so a quick and temporary structure makes a lot of sense. It works well and holds up on ordinary windy days.

    Oh, very helpful. I'm always looking for tricks that an older woman (me) can do myself. This is doable!

    Great idea! I'm doing container gardening and I think that besides being a sun screen, it will help keep birds out of my tomatoes! Thank you. - Mary in Texas

    I think this is the best, most versatile way of making a shade framework out of all the videos I've seen on RUclips. But, my question is this: do you glue the pipes in place or just assemble them without gluing?

      I haven't found it necessary to use glue for my garden projects made from PVC pipes. I prefer to take the structures apart for storage over the winter. Thanks for your comment.

    Hey there! Looking great. I'm a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in West Africa as an Agriculture volunteer. Our Hot season is coming up! I'm looking at developing a shade structure, and cost is a huge factor with the people I work with.
    I'm thinking about doing a shade structure with old mosquito nets -- any thoughts? A lot of shade structures I've seen use fancy materials which aren't even close to available here. But I'm thinking that the mosquito net would give enough dappled shade.
    Thanks for any insights!

      I'm not sure that mosquito netting will create enough shade. Try doubling or tripling the layers. Old lace curtains or tablecloths do work well, if you can find any of these.

    No adhesive at all? They fit tightly enough to stay together just like that?

    • @margaretpark1433
      @margaretpark1433  8 лет назад +6

      +laura brown They fit so tightly that sometimes I have to use a hammer to knock them apart for disassembly.

    Love your video,since u used 3/4 in. pipe cutters i imagine your PVC pipe must be 3/4 in.,is that correct?

    • @margaretpark1433
      @margaretpark1433  10 лет назад +3

      Yes. 3/4 inch PVC pipe is very sturdy and there are many connector fittings available for it.

      Thanks Margaret.With the help of my husband i have successfully built one bed with your tall structure.It looks great.I had trouble figuring out how to build it ,luckily my husband figured it out.U might want to elaborate on how u go about actually building your structure,actually demonstrate how one puts one together.I was making it much harder and wasted a lot of time trying to attempt to build one.Also how do u connect 2 shade panels together,do u use cable ties?

      Donna Bentkowski Got my 3 way connector from Lowes like u suggested.U can only get it from Home Depot by ordering it on line and u have to wait.Also got this great PVC cuter from H.D.,Cheeper than Lowes ,UNDER $7.00.Go to this link if u r interested ,it does cut like butter.

      +Enrique Goitia I think the shade cloth would help cool your plants. Give it a try if you can find some shade cloth in your area.

    would you put the shade cloth over zucchini/squash too?

    • @margaretpark1433
      @margaretpark1433  8 лет назад +2

      I think the ideal growing temperatures for squashes is between 70 and 95 degrees F. I f you get many weeks of temperatures near or over 100 degrees, it would probably be a good idea to cover them. But if it's only three weeks or so , they're probably OK without the shade cloth.
