How To get More Food From A Small Garden
Help feed your family by growing some of your own food, even if your yard is small. A small vegetable garden can be a great vegetable garden-if it’s planted strategically. And a small garden is actually less work and needs less water too.
How small are we talking? Imagine the space underneath a parked car. Add another 4 feet on each end and that gives you a space about 8 X 24 feet. You will be amazed at how much food you can grow in that limited space and be eating that food for 9 -10 months out of the year, and longer if you grow certain vegetables. Even 8 x 16 feet will yield a surprising amount of food.

I think this is the best, most versatile way of making a shade framework out of all the videos I've seen on RUclips. But, my question is this: do you glue the pipes in place or just assemble them without gluing?
I haven't found it necessary to use glue for my garden projects made from PVC pipes. I prefer to take the structures apart for storage over the winter. Thanks for your comment.

Our squirrels devour everything, including entire tomato plants, sunflower plants, etc. I noticed they don't bother plants under plastic netting (lazy?), so I'll try this as a deterrent. Thanks for a great idea, and great video! :)

I use mosquito netting for covering to keep out any bugs. I just place my drying materials on a flat grid in full sun and they dry really fast as they are also exposed to natural air movement.

Hey there! Looking great. I'm a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in West Africa as an Agriculture volunteer. Our Hot season is coming up! I'm looking at developing a shade structure, and cost is a huge factor with the people I work with. I'm thinking about doing a shade structure with old mosquito nets -- any thoughts? A lot of shade structures I've seen use fancy materials which aren't even close to available here. But I'm thinking that the mosquito net would give enough dappled shade. Thanks for any insights!
I'm not sure that mosquito netting will create enough shade. Try doubling or tripling the layers. Old lace curtains or tablecloths do work well, if you can find any of these.

I think I've discovered the easiest way to cover these structures with plastic sheeting without having to install a door.

would you put the shade cloth over zucchini/squash too?
I think the ideal growing temperatures for squashes is between 70 and 95 degrees F. I f you get many weeks of temperatures near or over 100 degrees, it would probably be a good idea to cover them. But if it's only three weeks or so , they're probably OK without the shade cloth.

+Dan Serevi I think in Vancouver you can probably grow plants in a greenhouse in winter -- but they would have to be plants that can withstand a little frost, The plants in this video are a good sample to choose from. You can plant seeds in January in the greenhouse and the seeds will sprout when the soil temperature is right for them. This way you're getting the earliest start.

2nd comment today and I love in a flat, in Mallorca with direct sun for quite a good time and it a very humid island and hot, like 35c sometimes. would this shade cloth help me use my greenhouse in summer since it esencially a plant cooker now
+Enrique Goitia I think the shade cloth would help cool your plants. Give it a try if you can find some shade cloth in your area.
hi, I have a small one rack greenhouse but it gets to hot, like 50c hot. do you use your in summer and at what temp do you grow in it. I know that the prose is to raise the co2 and heat for winter.
+Enrique Goitia My greenhouse has a plastic cover that I remove in the warm weather. I also drape it with shade cloth in the summer and also grow vine crops like cucumbers on the side for some more shade.

+pancake I have never tried to dry meats, so I'm sorry that I can't really answer your question. I doubt it would take longer than drying juicy vegetables, though.

+varun bhatia Gluing isn't necessary for the strength and stability of the structures. And by not using glue, you can take them apart for winter storage. I cut the plastic pipes with a 3/4 inch pipe cutter. You can also use a saw. Thanks for your question.
Just a little tip for filming next time - go to the other side of the table and let the light fall on you and what you are doing. You are backlighted much of the time -turning it around will prevent this -thanks for the video :)

Interesting... A long time ago I took four squares of 1/4 inch board two foot on a side... I then cut off ONE corner 10 inches long from each piece and tied them all together at the cut off corner to make a 4 sided dish reflector that can be FOLDED UP when not in use :) :)... see lewishb dot biz Lewis

ulie77 Thanks for your comment. I do have a portable greenhouse that I rotate around the garden. Sometimes the plants I want to save are not in the new greenhouse location. Then I use this way of overwintering plants.

Hi Margaret I am new to this, and bought a green house hubby put together. Thought I would put on my deck and put seeds in things. It gets very hot on deck. I am wondering if I am too late to seed now as its June but we have hot weather until October. I was just going to grow everything in some flat tubs or roasting pans.. what are your thoughts because you said you will plant later too and I am wondering about that..
