I’m sobbing how precious. I’m sad that some disabled people feel as though they are not worthy or “whole” without their limbs or abilities, it’s sad society has given them that idea, but it’s beautiful to see the empowerment and independence these brave people are receiving through this research. Both the scientists and patients hard work will help so many disabled people in the future! Great story.
Buck v. Bell was never overturned. We castrate people in this country because they are disabled.
Man 60 minutes has putting in work. I loved their harsh truth piece on the Iraq war 20 years later and now something I’ve been following for a while as a BME. This is what journalism is.

I say this honestly, Cyberpunk 2077 isnt far off lol just in terms of technology i think actually perhaps even around that year its very possible tech could get to a level approaching high tech prosthetics like that.
@@thorkagemob1297I remember watching a RUclips video 12 years ago talking about how realistic the tech of Deus Ex: Human Revolution was for 2027. With these advances, those prosthetics are finally becoming a reality.... right on schedule.

What's even more incredible, is that the technology can only improve from here. It's just going to get better and better with time.
It doesn’t matter what tech brings us. When 99.9% of amputees can’t afford even a basic set of limbs, chances are almost none will get to use this great tech.

@@charliegoodnight7560 that’s literally how all cutting edge technology starts out it’s always initially prohibitively expensive but then it becomes cheaper. Also your statement about 99.9 percent of all amputees not being able to afford basic prosthetics is false.

-3) to do nothing and not to worry - happiness is not in money (well, you will lose your deposits, but inflation will be a little later)
Well, what can I say - not long left, some analysts say - that in the first days of April a serious recession will begin in the US financial system. Some believe that from mid-April.
But everyone agrees that it is necessary to get rid of the dollar, since soon its value will be cheaper than the paper on which it is printed. It is better to buy precious metals or appliances, electronics and real estate.

Wonderful story. Truly touching. I hope the department of defense is able to commercialize their product, and bring the price down so the masses can afford it. I also hope we all work to reduce accidents causing disability by reducing major car crashes and war.
I have spine injury some problems 5,6,7, spine. Challenge I have Epilepsy too. A lot of doctors were not helping. I have to be Group home and I can do things . I miss having a strong spine and nerves brain and feet. Thank you for sharing this video,

This one really got to me. Kudos to everyone involved with developing and testing this amazing technology.
It was very interesting to the progress that has been achieved over the last ten years. Enabling a sense of feel (feedback) takes these prosthetics to the next level. Reconnecting the mans arm to his brain an amazing story and humbling. It makes you appreciate just how special being able to shake someones hand is.
Ghost in the shell and Deus EX were right all along. We're definitely on track for a future like that.

This is just so awesome. The future potential for these treatments is just incredible, especially if you consider how AI/neural network/machine learning could be utilized to vastly improve the ability to fine tune the highly complex and intricate connections between the mechanical and biological interfaces (which to me appears to be the biggest limiting factor here).
Oh man, such progress, so wonderful ! Stuff I've been interested in since a freshman psych course where I learned the brain took and gave electrical signals - gross and cellular ones ! And from a love of science fiction. It's been 50 years but who said it'd be easy ?!!

The progress that science is making is amazing. Of course, as with everything, the progress of science has its good and bad sides - I mean the negative effects of, for example, artificial intelligence, but the good effects, in my opinion, outweigh the bad ones. It is wonderful to see paralyzed people smiling and hopeful again. This hope is only possible thanks to the development of science and knowledge, used with the best of intentions, in order to help those most in need. Of course, any new, advanced technology is expensive to start with, but the price always goes down over time. Anyway, doctors and scientists who are constantly working to improve the lives of ordinary people and the world, in general, should be stars in the headlines and rewarded much better than some vain, fake, foolish celebrities.
This reminds me so much of the scene in the 2014 Robo Cop reboot when the guy is trying to play the guitar. I was thinking they would reference it because it showed exactly what the scientists are aiming for.

Tears don't come to my eyes over much of anything, but they did during this story. I mostly curse Technology for making life worse than when I was a kid. Then I see these kind of amazing emerging technologies and It makes me a bit more positive about the future of humanity.
60 minutes is so great
This is great TV! We need more serious shows for more options in our consumption of media. These are examples of science that is life changing, and show patients a promise of an optimistic future. These prosthetics are making life worth living for these patients and many more. Hopefully the military's investment will be taken over by the private industry, and commercialize these as standard products. Driving the prices down to what insurance and medicare can cover them, is what we need ASAP. Hat's off to 60 Minutes for covering this topic!

It was taken… or better yet earned.
What most people don't understand is what we make, anything we make or create were made with the same properties. So anything is possible.
That last point isn't a trifle. The work of George Lakoff speaks of how metaphor dominates our experience. The term _touching_ may well be universal across all human cultures, even surpassing the metaphor that up is more and down is less; or at least, I can't think of why a culture would not "embrace" (sorry, over played it) the metaphor of "touching".

The DOD is one of the agencies that funds the research for this in its budget. They are spending money on t which is why there's so much funding for the military every year.

I’d get it more if he lost both arms but he still has one he can touch and feel with he didn’t lose that completely. Not saying he hasn’t gone thru something horrible but you would think they would do it for people that lost both limbs.

"Someone turned it on"... where were the safety devices; red signs that says "do not turn ON" and device that physically prevents the switch from or systems from being turned on? Industrial accidents usually result from many failures of people to follow directions.
