It's mathematically impossible for them to pay off $250,000 in 3 years. Even if there were zero interest, the monthly payments would be $6,944. They can't possible afford that much based on their income. Plus, there is interest, so the payment time, even at $6,500 a month would be years longer, and it's unlikely than anyone can grind away as suggested for 5 straight years. It won't happen. A much better idea, is set $4,000 each month to that debt, and that is a VERY high amount, but still enjoy life. When you can pickup extra work, do so and put it to your debt. Take any bonus and use it to pay off debt. They are still looking at a decade to pay it off, so they will need to eat out sometimes and enjoy a vacation once a year. Because with no rewards, people give up. Some people can look at that declining debt as the reward, but those people are unlikely to have the debt to begin with. Having debt that is twice your take home annual income is not going to be eliminated in 3 years, so we have to be realistic on our expectations.

Arguing with math is like being mad at gravity because you fall. $250,000 divided by three years equals $83,333.33 a year, which is $6,944.44. That is 73% of their take come pay. Even if they could live off of the remaining monthly $2,556 they would still have debt because there is interest. That is the entire point. You have a financial strategy that cannot work mathematically. Just because someone pays off debt in X amount of time, does not mean everyone with debt can do the same. In this case, it is not a sprint to pay off that debt, as it is will many people calling into this show, but it is a marathon of several years.
