I cringed so hard this episode. My second-hand embarrassment was VERY real, and you know why 🙈 Honestly, I thought this season would be 100% about prep for Nationals and then Nationals game-play, so this is an interesting twist, and I'm really excited about it.
I'm so curious to see how Kageyama, Tsukki, and Hinata (🙄) manage.

I honestly admire Hinata's courage and tenacity, not for showing up uninvited to the camp but for apologising and staying on as ball boy for a chance to improve. Someone with less mental strength would have folded and stayed content to practise with the seniors. Since this is technically the second time Hinata's infiltrated Shiratorizawa after S2E1 when he followed Ushijima on his run, we already know he's capable of doing incredibly moronic and reckless things, but I think it's sometimes forgotten that Hinata has the drive to do many things that others wouldn't or couldn't, like play alone for 3 years in junior high, train with the ladies' team after losing to Kitagawa Daichi and getting criticised by Kageyama, practising receiving when Kageyama wouldn't set to him in S1, give up his entire quick set in S2 and train a new one...precisely because he knows his shortcomings and physical limits and will never stop hungering to improve. I would cut him some slack for being anxious when Kageyama and Tsukki have gotten opportunities for special training and he naturally feels he has to catch up somehow.

One think is easy to miss if you aren't familiar with japanese customs is that Sakusa calls Ushijima "Wakatoshi-kun", Ushijima's given name. It's surprising because Sakusa is 1) younger than Ushijima and 2) not even from the same school (in fact they're from two different cities), so calling him by his given name reflects closeness/friendship. Like really close friendship. To put this in perspective, only the third years at Shiratorizawa call him Wakatoshi. Shirabu, Shiratorizawa's setter and the same age as Sakusa, calls him Ushijima-san ("san" is a polite honorific) out of respect. Japanese people don't call each other by their given name as commonly and as freely as other countries do. Especially to someone older than you. They call each other by their surname/family name and an honorific depending of their relationship/status. So this really draws attention. I hope this is helpful! It's just a subtle (or not so subtle) way of showing Sakusa's and Ushijima's relationship. It can get lost if someone is not aware of this custom or not familiar with the language. I hope you read this comment! And that you enjoy season 4!

If you'll notice when Tsukishima calls Hinata an idiot, he uses the standard "baka" instead of "boke" because that version of "idiot" is kinda Kageyama's catchphrase and associated with Kageyama so even in that instance he can't let Kageyama win. He is that petty.

IN terms of washijo, it's interesting. He blocked hinata's entrance into the camp so he's not as pure intentioned as others are. Part of him at least wants to crush hinata's spirit by giving him a position that is "beneath" him. Part of him is also probably at least curious about hinata.

@@SarahPavanVolleyball The thing is, Washijo is absolutely right. Without Kags, Hinata right now is a barely a bench player. He can't serve, can't recieve at all, his blocking also leaves a lot to be desired besides some miracle lucky plays, and even his attack is fairly one dimensional. Hinata right now is basically a quick attack one trick pony. As they have said, Washijo would have just sent Hinata home if he didn't want him there. Washijo still loves big and simple strength, but yea, he is intrigued by Hinata who rocked his entire volleyball universe.
Also, if there's anyone who knows Hinata's position and what's best for him, it would be Washijo who had to go through the same tough road. As Ukai said, this training camp might be harder than Hinata realizes (and you will also see what that means in the upcoming episodes :)). Washijo with the cold truth is the necessary evil so to speak that Hinata needs right now

21:30 kanji are characters that represent an idea, and some kanji can have more than one possible pronunciation (for example the "ao" in "Aoba Josai" can also be read as "sei," which is why the school is nicknamed Seijoh for short). furigana is when you write hiragana/katakana (which are purely phonetic characters, so each one represents a sound rather than an idea) above/next to a kanji to indicate how it should be pronounced. so for example, Karasuno is written as 烏野 in kanji. with furigana, it would be 烏(からす)野(の) to let the reader know that the kanji are pronounced 烏(karasu)野(no).
so you basically got the point of Tanaka's conversation scene. Ennoshita was hoping that Takeda also wrote up the phonetic spelling for each kanji so that Kageyama could read the directions easily. (but he didn't, so he can't, lol.)

You're entering one of the best training arcs in existence, I absolutely cannot wait to see your perspective on it! The change of art style here is fitting in my opinion, because this feels like the point where Haikyuu starts getting exponentially more mature as a story.
There are no real-life people in Haikyuu if memory serves - some characters have irl models, but that's about it. Furudate (the author) themselves said that there's usually no one "model" for a character, it's more of an amalgamation of traits they see in different people. That being said, they did get a permission to enter the Ajinomoto training center and do research there for this arc specifically! Furudate takes research very seriously, and I'm sure some interviews took place there, too. At the very end of the story, Furudate thanked Masashi Nanbu, the current manager of Panasonic Panthers and a former youth team coach. Looks like Furudate interviewed them right around the end of the Shiratorizawa match, which they were ecstatic about.
Kanji are characters that came from China, and there can be multiple ways of reading it; when you're starting out, you need furigana to read it, which is pretty much spelling kanji out.

I regularly re-read Haikyuu from this point onwards, because there's so much good life advice in every chapter.

Regarding your questions about Kageyama getting lost: Japanese has different classes of characters. Takeda sensei wrote the instructions in full Japanese Kanji. But considering there are thousands of Kanji characters, it's often written with small "helper" characters above the more rare ones. These are called furigana. Takeda didn't include these because he assumed Kageyama would be familiar with the kanji he used. But, as we know, Kageyama is not the best student lol, so he gets lost as he can't read the instructions properly.

As for Washijo sensei, I don't like to speculate people's intention because I find it impossible to know what someone truly thinks or feels, but the fact that he allows Hinata to stay (despite Hinata having proven him wrong before) at least implies that he's not afraid to be proven wrong again. It may not be a good opportunity that he's giving Hinata, but he's also not completely shutting Hinata out because of petty personal feelings either. I can respect that.

I might be one of those in the minority but I actually don't think Washijo actually bears any ill will towards Hinata in particular at all. I think he honestly just believes that Hinata is not skilled enough to be in this training camp at this point. It goes back to what Ushijima said to Hinata back during the Shiratorizawa game. 'If you can't fight with height, then what can you do if your technique is clumsy too?'
If he actually didn't want Hinata to succeed, he would be well in his rights to send Hinata home. Instead, he gave Hinata exactly what he asked Takeda for (a chance to observe players better than him in and out of practice). He could not very well allow someone who crashed the camp to practice as it sets a bad precedent and compromises the integrity of the training camp. So he makes Hinata ball boy which gives him exactly what he wants (the chance to observe). I think the reason he says those things to Hinata (how Kageyama is required for Hinata to be effective) is not to discourage/humiliate him but to make him realize why he wasn't chosen for this camp (In Washijo's mind, given that Hinata just crashed the camp he must think that he deserves to be there which is true when you see how Hinata handles the news that he wasn't selected). The words he said to Hinata might have been blunt, but they were true. Given the game in S3, I think you can tell that this bluntness is part of his coaching style, not anything that's directed towards Hinata in particular. This is supposed to be a camp for the best rookies in the prefecture and without Kageyama, Hinata is an average spiker who cannot serve, receive or set.
People have also brought up the fact that the Jozenji coach recommended Hinata, but Washijo overruled him. I think that's because Washijo is just a better and more experienced coach who can see clearly what Hinata lacks. Washijo, just like Grandpa Ukai, has a lot of experience. Washijo has made Shiratorizawa a perennial powerhouse with or without talent like Ushijima, so he knows how to scout talent. I firmly believe he would not let his resentment for shorter players cloud his overall judgment and that the barrier that prevented Hinata's entry into the camp is not based on height but solely his ability and skill.

About the Japan men's teams' head coach and his speech, Coach Hibarida is not actually a real-life figure. As far as I remember, there's only 2 irl vb figures who get name-dropped in all of Haikyuu (1st as you may remember is Arie Selinger by Ukai Sr. in season 3, and you'll see the 2nd one later in this season)
Back to the topic of Coach Hibarida's speech, I think it's simply a message that the manga author wants to spread esp to new fans or non-fans of the sport who don't see its complexities yet. After all, at first look, one would definitely think there's no way Shiratorizawa could be defeated, but vb is not all about height and power, hence the long and epic battle that is all of season 3😁

I actually wasn’t attracted to Hinata much in S1. I thought he is just another classic overzealous but pure hearted protagonist with light-color hair. It’s not until later on Hinata shows the other side of his personality: he can be “greedy” and his hunger for more can be even intimidating for people who don’t have the competitiveness in them. Sneaking in the training camp and insisting to improve the freak quick, I really enjoy seeing this side of Hinata which he is much more than the sweet angelic baby

Not sure if someone else has explained this yet, but Japanese has several writing systems, one of which is kanji as you mentioned. The main difficulty with this one is that there are several ways to read the characters, especially when it comes to place names as Kageyama is dealing with. That is why they mentioned furigana, which is used to write down how to read the kanji and would have been helpful to him

Actually a specific few anime that would help scratch the Haikyuu itch.
Actually just this one show about a medieval Japanese card game.
It’s called Chihayafuru, and I’ve been hoping that there’d be someone who’d appreciated the sports aspects of Haikyuu to also share their experience with it. I don’t want to take away anything by describing what it’s about, but it’s author clearly understands the struggles and joys of living an athlete.
If you’re up for trying something unexpected with the channel after Haikyuu, please give it a chance.

Yes!! Chihayafuru is always what I want to rec to people if they like Haikyuu. Not quite the “traditional sports anime” people expect, but very similar feelings in terms of the excitement of competition, satisfying character progression, and life lessons - plus, multiple female main characters! I love seeing the girls also competing!
It’s not often thought of by people when looking for more sports anime recs after Haikyuu, but I think Chihayafuru is on a much more similar vibe to Haikyuu than other sports anime - while still having its own unique identity.

Sarah's gonna meet so many great characters soon! And all the fantastic songs that come with them (I especially love Seagulls). I'm super hyped.
Also, Japan uses three sets of characters for their written language. Hiragana and katakana are just sounds さ/サsa, ち/チchi, だ/ダda, etc. Katakana is used for stuff like foreign words and specific cases (apparently it can be used kind of like caps lock). Hiragana is used for Japanese words and stuff like particles. Kanji is taken from Chinese, so it's thousands of different symbols which have their own meanings (and can have multiple meanings for each symbol) which may or may not resemble their Chinese origins.
Since kanji can be hard to learn, stuff like books and games intended for kids and people learning the language usually have furigana, which is hiragana and katakana written above/to the side of kanji which helps the reader know what's written.
Edit: So, you could spell "watashi" (which is a way to say "I" or "me" in Japanese) as わたし in hiragana, ワタシ in katakana, or 私 in kanji. Since the first two are just just sounds instead of a symbol with a meaning, they're easy to read, but kanji is unambiguous (especially when surrounded by other characters since Japanese doesn't use spaces) and easy for people who know it.

On my latest watch, I noticed that Hinata would have left, but Washijo-sensei came up with the idea to let Hinata be a ballboy - he took the phone without prelude, and he let him learn. Washijo-sensei knew his receives were poor, and he surely read the book Daichi read about reading receives as a ballboy. He also knows the hunger Hinata has for the game as a fellow short player. Hinata also thrives on the challenge of proving others wrong about him being nothing without Kageyama, or nothing without height. This lit a new fire in him. He may not be a kind mentor for him, but he was the mentor he needed then, and later (for manga readers) he has truly supported Hinata's growth. He provided him the situation and environment that Hinata could then grow in.
Love your reactions btw, can't wait to see your reaction next time around.

S4 is my favorite season of Haikyuu, so I'm so happy you've arrived here. The second hand embarrassment is so real; I couldn't believe Hinata did that the first time I watched it and could only imagine if he'd snuck into a camp when I was in high school. (He'd probably be chucked out the door.)
Curly-haired Sakusa deserves all the appreciation and the love.
I have such a passion for this arc because it aired during a tough patch in my life and it taught me many things, so I'm excited to share that journey again. 😊

  • @shrutichoudhary9900

If I'm honest, this particular arc with Hinata crashing into the training camp uninvited and playing as the ball boy is a stepping stone into his volleyball journey. If we look at their past dynamics, he played volleyball in middle school without a team, practiced for a bit with the girl's team after his match with Kageyama, so there was hardly anything he could actually learn. I mean the guy learnt spiking by doing wall bounce drills. He only ever played good volleyball with a real team and opponents from April to December (according to how far we've come). And even during this time, if not for the freak duo quick in Karasuno's belt, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be on the starting line, even if he's got pure animal instincts. He needs to get those basics down to become at least decent at digging for the tournament, but they've been trying to improve his skills according to what the team needs more rather than what he needs to do so as to improve his individual game. Back to what Kageyama told him in Season 1 when he was insecure about his height and power after seeing Asahi's spike, Kags said that it doesn't matter if Hinata's methods are a bit uncoventional, because at the end if he scores then it's a point for the team. Kags has been playing volleyball even before the time Hinata even heard about the sport or saw the Little Giant. Plus Hinata's tenacity for victory and the hunger to become strong is what makes me love him so much. He is impatient but dude really has a strong mind and heart because really he wouldn't have made it this far if he was weak. I love his character so much even though he gave me second-hand embarrassment but my heart still breaks for him because I wish nothing more than to see him being considered a worthy rival without Kageyama into the equation. A player who can be considered to be in Sarah's All Star Teams and a valid choice for others as well. Despite everything we know that he is a player Kageyama sets to in some really difficult times, I just want him to become a player to whom every setter wants to set to. And this particular arc opens his way to become just that. Sure, it's going to be rough and depressing at times, but it'll be realistic and more humane.
