Since i was a kid, I was told by my parents that some songs are prophetic.
I remember having to dance my way through the crowd to get a fresh beer during this song. I don't dance. But it was the only way.
Ah the is freaking hysterical! :) so awesome ... I'm laughin so hard
I call that to look when you just crossed the Sahara desert and you got that look in your eye and you need that beer more than you need life it says it all
Although I must confess I'm not the Antichrist and I will never deny the Lord however I've had a drink at 12:00 on occasion and certainly ran into certain female like substances that altered my evening I'm just saying I'm human
You're awesome
Thank you for dancing. You don't have to be a good dancer. Just dance with us, that's all we need.
Anyone else reaching for this song in the last couple days?
Not to date myself but, I saw them perform this live. Yeah, it was awesome.
Some of the best times of my life! Still going! Much love ❤and light ✨️
Cool
Me to
I was 15 or 16
unfortunately this song has become timeless and all too relevant
Perfectly put.
Really. Quite so indeed . . Shut the fxxk up and split to Mars tomorrow Wusk.... Musk... Mask. !!!!! >. Now there's one to go viral
Yes. I do not agree with their ideals , but....they were on point with this song
😊😊
Spot on
The song most relevant to the times we're living in.
"It hasn't got a name just yet". Now we do... 10/17/20 🌊🌊🌊
I remember hearing this at RFK Stadium in Washington DC... Dancing in the Mud on the Football Field. High on LSD... EPIC SHOW!
Trying to remember . Dark Star into Smokestack Lightning , then the sky fell with a hell of a thunderstorm . Mud sliding across the 50 yard line .
Yassss! With Bruce Hornsby and Traffic!! Or was it Sting? Those years run together! I know the huge thunderstorm, someone getting struck by lightning and that guy running and jumping over the lower balcony to the floor followed by a broken hip and ambulance were omens for sure in 95💔🥺
This song showed up on Greenpeace Rainbow Warriors 2 CD set. I bought it in either 98 or 99. My elderly Dad liked the whole 2 CD set from Greenpeace. I actually took the Old Pollack to the 89 March for Women's Lives in DC when I was in grad. school. We had a great time, and at that time, it was the largest women's right's march ever in the history of the country. It was eclipsed after inauguration 2017.
Мы купили в 1990. Помню, там было много хорошей музыки.
John Cutler recruited a bunch of kids from his kid's school (Presidio Hill School in San Francisco) for this video. I was 12 and a bit too old, but it's fun to see these kids again (I can remember about half their names, which sort of amazes me).
I heard this song for the first time on a bootleg from Boston 1982. I was in high school. Chilling at Vaugh Charlton's garage apartment Landenburg. I bet I've heard this song 1,000 times maybe more. This fucking song rocks.
Those bootlegs are pretty hard to find nowadays! Lucky you!
Funny how this song still holds it's meaning 30+ years later
that's because this song speaks a strong truth.
John S um? Yes you are correct, also this is the dead, so timeless has no time to date!!!!!!
Bob Weir❤️❤️❤️❤️
The darkness never goes from some men's eyes...
No better in January 2020
2020, guess who pays the price. Be safe everyone, was to young to live in the 80s, survived the depressing 00-10, let's hope '21 is better.
Edited out the best line of the song, "The future's here, we are it. We are on our own."
It was a bit more than that...
… Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
If the spirit's sleeping then the flesh is ink
History's page will be neatly carved in stone
The future's here, we are it, we are on our own
On our own, on our own, we are on our own
… If the game is lost, then we're all the same
No one left to place or take the blame
We will leave this place an empty stone
Or that shining ball of blue we call our home
… So the kids, they dance, they shake their bones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down
Ashes, ashes, all fall down
We are here.....
Looking at all these older comments 5 years ago saying how relevant this song is you had no idea its 2022 now and this song is literally being played out in front of us today crazy times. LGB!
5 years ago the left screetched that Trump was going to get us into a nuclear war. And we had world peace. Now Big Joey has got us close to Armageddon - his words!
Right down to the Nazis.
… and here we are in 2024. Same song. Still applies.
Politicians still throwing stones.
Ditto - 2021
It seems Bobby started throwing stones too :(
Timeless words. After all these years, still so relevant.
I love the steampunk vibe on their outfits in this vid.
Also notice - most bands close out comments for their youtube videos: this band does not. That's quite interesting.
I wonder how many picked up on this song during the 49ers. Lions game tonight? Brings me back to senior year in high school
Jerry drew the barbed wire guy painted on the wall on a napkin and then it was painted on the wall.
Hey rock star, hey movie star, give 1 percent of your money to save the children
PEACE TO UKRAINE
surprised i've never seen this video... known the song for 20 years
one of my fav songs from the setlist with Ratdog at the GA Theater in Athens, Ga... 1999
I’ve known it way longer than that and I’ve never seen it either
Anyone watching this in june 2020..
7/20/20 🙋🏻♀️ reading some of the older comments I’m thinking oh if you only knew what kind of shit show we’re about to be facing... I wanna turn as many people on to this song as possible 😉
a great timeless song! Never get tired of it.
Ah,Bob and Jerry having fun again! More folks should check this song out.You don't have to be a dead head, I'm not. Tighten up bitches!
No time to be falling down people, time to rise up and keep on shining.
To Mr Barlow, who held a tread that wove a beautiful cloth.
The song is a bit too edited for my tastes, but I gotta love the sentiment here. The kids throwing the colorful paintballs at that b/w autocratic painting....good stuff! I agree with everyone else--this SOOOOO hits now in 2020! (I learned I loved it in like 1986!?!?!) God bless this band!
Bless you, all. Be safe. Love one another.
I think this song is truly amazing and message is true to this day we all have to think about what life really is I love this because the message is true. Think about
'87. Huh. Still gives me chills, perhaps even more than it did then. Phenomenal, beautiful, and utterly terrifying.
one of bob weirs most powerful songs off this great album
I have been singing this song for months. What an appropriate time
This song struck me as really sad today. However, I really feel like it would be just as sad if Clinton would have won last night. We were screwed either way.
TheZombie thankfully Trumps in hot water now
Hey billionaires, give 1 percent of your money to protect the children, we made you rich, we bought your shit, now give back, we are the human family, do it now, protect the children, feed them, house them,
Damn, Bobby wrote some really good songs
SO GOOD, GOLDEN AND HAUNTING! 😎😎😎😎😎😍😍😍😍😍😁😁😁😁😁😂😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😭😳😳😳😳😳😱😱😱😱😱😵😵😵😵😵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🌇🌇🌇🌇🌇🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great song, but Jerry in a trench coat? Who authorized this? Bahahaha!
can't believe that i haven't seen this before ... weird?
WOW I can believe that I haven't seem this until now!!!!
So relevant as the wars continue.
trenchcoat mafia?
Boy how this song hits home with the times were living in now, Aug. 2020
I'm a couple days late; however, happy heavenly eightieth birthday, Jerry Garcia!
This song could’ve been written centuries ago, and by the look of it, centuries in the future.
Hopefully, people will be there in the future TO hear it!
here bc steve-o said this is his fav song rn
a classic and brilliant video!!
I wish someone would make a new video for this song that is contemporary. The intent of the song could be delivered so much better. Every time I hear "rich man in his summer home," Donald Trump's face flashes into my mind.
+Melissa Koczur-Mitchell What about Al Gore, The Rothschilds and Hillary Clinton?
+Anthony Olson - them too. All of them.
+Melissa Koczur-Mitchell Agree. Despite all the archival war footage, the vid comes across much too sunny. The song is meant to be dark and foreboding. Overall the vid is a complete fail.
Remember when "money green proletarian gray" became "money green it's the only way?"
clip had to include KKK and Hitler. why not janis joplin dying from an o d?
I also remember Weir flying in private jets to gigs.
GOOD SONG BAD MOVIE
I remember when Lesh wore a BMW shirt in concerts in the 70s
jerry wears the top hat again, hooray. Thanks, @gratefuldead channel. thats some serious footage of craze and the innocent shots of the children. Then the walkers roll in break down that wall of fear.
without a doubt the song for today ...#ByeDon2020
It's Evil. not a person
How come everyone but Bob has to wear a silly hat?!?
I would cover his pretty hair and face.
TONIGHT! ON UNSOLVED MYSTERIES! FIND OUT! WHO THE FUCK KEEPS THROWING STONES
They all look like Robert Stack wearing those coats.
I think this was the most political song that the band ever did. Anyway great song love dancing to it❤
Easily
Anybody know the meaning of the “proletarian grey” line? Obviously this was written at the tale end of the Cold War but I can’t quite place its significance outside of that. Firstly, I think red is the color more associated with socialism, and even more interesting given that the lyrics were penned by John Perry Barlow who leaned libertarian, if left-libertarian at that. Hmmm…
Bob Weir was a really good guitarist. Good lookin' dude as well. I remember when he came here to Boston with Bobby And The Midnights. A disc jockey on our local station at the time (WCOZ) mentioned the dates they were playing and said "That's right, girls. He's the cute one." It sounded like he was talking about a Beatle.
Was?
I remember listening to this once on the Greenpeace album back in 89. Have not heard it since, and it sounds as good as ever!
Greenpeace album? really? ... never heard of it! :)
Crazy assignment! I printed out the lyrics to this song for my 2 children for them to analyze during their summer break between 7-8th and 8-9th grades. Seemed like an interesting way to introduce them to deeper thinking- maybe! GOT NOTHING BACK! They did not even try!
This generation is "INTERERSTING!" The only word I could think of! Actually, they say it (interesting) a LOT!
They are 24 and 25 now and DO NOT remember nor care one IOTA about that challenge that could have opened their eyes to their future life!
Aside from food, clothing, shelter and nourishing, what more could I do for them?
The words of this song are a map to our success!
Ashes, Ashes, ALL FALL DOWN!
Stop the BUITLLSH!
Need that cash to feed that Jones!
CUT THAT CHECK!!! lol! - 2021
He does and doesn't preach what he sows! S. fneeds a clean up
Follow the bouncing heads...Silver stadium, Rochester, N.Y.
My favorite band of all time.
Mine too. If I have a night drinking (and some ”extras”) and listening to music, I always have to wait a few hours before I put on Grateful Dead. Cause when Grateful Dead comes on the stereo, nothing else will do after them really. I’m sucked into their world and can easily listen to them for 7-8 hours in a row. If I try to put something else on after it just sounds weak and boring in comparison. My wife will kill me some day, haha.
Caught this one quite a few times during an "The Other One>Wharf Rat> Throwing Stones> Not Fade Away" after Drums in the Second Set, or "Other>Rat>Throwing>Away". It always got the crowd pumped up and singing, no matter what the real repercussions were. It is now 2024 as I write this, so Please Vote BLUE this year! From an old Head.
Trump 2024
😁👍
June 3 (6?), 1991. Some friends and I that worked at Oasis Waterpark in Palm Springs went to see The Grateful Dead at LA Coliseum. When arriving, some of the boys bought 100 hits of LSD for $100. We dropped about an hour before the concert. Went to the restroom with the girls before we got in line to go in. As I sat down on the toilet I noticed the floor of tiny tiles were moving like waves across the floor. I stated that out loud and my friends told me to keep looking down as I left. Wise advice as there was a wall long mirror once you left the stall. 😳 We got in line and there were so many Jesus freaks with signs telling us we were all going to hell. 🙄 I had never listened to The Dead prior to this or done acid. I spent most of the day dancing and pulling at the vines that were up in the stands entangled in the wire fence. Went around and people watched 😳 thankful I didn't look in that mirror. Danced, danced, danced. My favorite song was Throwing Stones (still to this day). Spent the night in a hotel room with 8-10 people in Redondo Beach. Prior to going to bed, I got a frozen yogurt and we walked through Burger King's drive thru and ordered 30 cheeseburgers, some were eaten for breakfast. One of the best days of my life. Oh, and the leftover LSD, the boys sold the rest each hit for $5 when we went back home. 😁
The Dead because they just sing the truth about society & all the politicians 🙏☮️🇺🇸🙏❤️🎤🎸🥁🎹🎹🎼🎼🕉️
Watching baseball they played this song going into break, looked it up. Sorry, I hate the Dead but this is a killer song. The first and only Dead song I've ever liked.
Okay I'm open to checking out more, what ya got? don't say a popular one either because i probably hate it. Something good but not played much on the air waves.
Say no to communism, kids.
Superb tune. And All too relevant a song these days, as NATO seems hellbent on out-escalating Putin in Ukraine.
They cut out the bridge and the guitar solo for this version.
Bobby the 80s are calling and they want their cocaine back. get rid of that Indiana Jones looking jacket lol😅😅😅
THE best Dead song ever. Never gets old.
I will throw stones so hard at the people who have been stealing from me that the stones will cause earthquakes not just on earth throughout the solar system quakes
Only gets better with age/& unstoned.
Linear time... LoL
One of my fav dead songs but can't help but wonder why this wasn't a mainstay on Mtv. "Hey guys, we'll all wear tan trench coats. Maybe we can get a deal with London Fog!"
It was in rotation with Touch of Grey and Hell in a Bucket. I saw it quite a few times.
Ashes Ashes All Fall Down 💖
The boo da lives in all , just waiting to be found, understood and nothing more , as the next day holds the darkness found and back and back around, it just in the head, like a cat sleeping in the sun, is bothering no one
No idea there was a video for this, very nice and still so relevant!
2024 and this is still relevant! (~}●○■□ ✌️❤️🤓
A peaceful place, at least it looks from space....
Another LEDGENDARY dead song 🎵. More true now than ever before. Hope for peace 🕉 8888. Sticks and stones.
I am living in Graz Austria. I should be known Austria is a gun manufacturer. Can't be neutral when youvsell arms.
It's late 2020, Sunday before the election. Guess who gets to pay the price...?
sometimes I think all of music was created because one day this song would be wrote.
So relevant!
Fantastic work. The More Science High AV Department out did itself. Still supporting Progressive Martyrs High School's sports teams. But you just can't beat a More Science High party.
I did not know that they did an actual video of this song! 🤯
Does that mean that they did a video of ALL the songs from _In The Dark?_ 🤔
To my knowledge, they also did videos for Touch of Grey (ruclips.net/video/mzvk0fWtCs0/видео.html) and Hell in a Bucket (ruclips.net/video/a9Bs4xhDyxw/видео.html) from In the Dark album.
Very Prophetic Song I think........To say the least!!!!! Love & Peace Ron
Dear Mike. I feel a fraud really as this is my good lady wife's account. We live in SE Asia in a country where individual freedom is limited but we are totally safe to send our children out at night by themselves. It's a paradox isn't it, that in the West we have so much individual freedom but we are scared for our our children, yet in this society I can walk around at night without any fear.
But this is bye the bye, as we Scots say. We live in a totally interconnected world. We spend billions on trying to find alternative places for Mankind to settle and trillions to fuck up the beauty we already have. In Borneo, where we live, an area the size of Switzerland disappears to the benefit of the greed
of the palm oil planters every year, burnt down with the consequent destruction of wildlife and habitat. Nobody really cares as Long as they have cheap soap and cooking oil.
This song epitomises where we are going wrong. They say a song never changes anything but this song rings so true
Cheryl Hutchinson that my friend is why I pray to JEHOVAH god above cause only he can right the wrongs that play plague to this world He and only He will bring an end to those ruining the earth. And I pray that all my brothers and sisters can find him in these last days that were living in cause when that train comes round will have to possess a ticket to see what's in store for us and that my friend is to live in a perfect paradise right here on earth loving and praising JAH and living in harmony with his will.
@@gratefuldead2379 it is through our hands, feet, eyes, and our being that Jah actualizes, and manifests into reality. We've got to accept ourselves, and our roll to take action through sharing ourselves with the world. This is how we will heal one another, and Pachamama. Through action. Prayer is powerful, but God moves through us all so we must let go of judgements, fear, doubt, and whatever it is we're holding onto that keeps us from living out God's plan. We must follow our hearts, and trust the intuitions within and allow ourselves to be what we are so that our spirits may bring what we have to share into this reality. It takes real, physical effort and Love. We got to get back to the garden
@@MysticMonkeyMiracle you speak Words of Wisdom my friend.
But remember that we alone can do nothing. It is written that it belongs not to man to direct his own step. It’s only with His help through his Holy Spirit that we can achieve change. But know also that just as there is JEHOVAH GOD ALMIGHTY so to is there satan the devil and in this system of things right now he is running rampant like a ravenous lion seeking to devour those who he can. Man alone cannot defeat satan or bring his rule to an end. History has proved that. All this time mans been around we still haven’t got it together. It’s only he who is in heaven who can wipe the wickedness from this earth. Satan cannot read our hearts but he can see our actions and so can he predict our actions. Then he can lay traps about. I believe for the man who is evil his way shall probably be peaceful and lavish. But for the meek one who is humble in the eyes of god shall walk thru persecution. Jesus even said if your to follow him your to carry your own torture steak. His kingdom is coming. A kingdom that shall never fall. A kingdom that will establish peace throughout the whole inhabited earth. It’s up to us to take in the knowledge and apply it to our lives. Jesus said Happy is the man conscious of his spiritual need for man cannot live on bread alone. Agape love to you my friend.
Once a deadhead, always a deadhead.
who is singing this?? bob weir???
Yep
⭐⚡💜⚡⭐ turn on your lovelight and leave it on...
It's been this way, forever. So prescient!
Where is the one they used to show on vh1 classic? Way better than this turd.
It's nightmare they asking for
Garcia looks fuckin' great. OUTASITE!!!
'Ashes Ashes All Fall Down"
After the last couple DAZE of more gun violence and recent talk of a rich bastard getting away for many year with diddling little girls I woke up with this song in my head. Written in '87 here we are in 2019 these lyrics mean more than ever. "politicians throwing stones." Will it ever change?
Once you reach that status the homeless and needy are not thr Grateful dead at their problems
Bobby's hilarious it's hard to take him serious 😂
