Amit Gupta Not really. Brightest of minds are still working in fields like astrophysics, rocket science, literature, arts etc. These fields benefit a lot from our stupid consumption whether you believe it or not. How do you think NASA gets funded? Through taxes. How do government get taxes? Through our production. Why do we produce so much? Because the demand is there.
No, you mean "finally someone other than the conservatives are talking about it" seriously, I've heard more anti-billion dollar corporation conversation s from Republican s over 15 years ago than democrats
Man, I'm currently reading this book. Just going across Google's chapter. I have to say: this is one of the significant books I have ever read! I'm also trying to quit social media and this books highly encourages me to do so. Thanks, Scott. For showing me the healthy path.
We care. But we are powerless to do anything about it. Money buys public policy. And these companies have plenty of that. If we want this to stop, we first need to make political donations illegal.
One thing he unfortunatly didn't mention in the interview in the end is: We humans tend to project human traits on non human entities. We like to believe that a company has an conscience, empathy or anything like that. In fact, a company is a machine that optimizes any process. Eg evading taxes, producing where labor laws are not as strict, etc. COMPANYS ARE NOT HUMANS, NOT OUR FRIENDS OR EVEN AN AQUAINTANCE. There just a lifeless entity.
Agreed. They are a fiction created by laws that were created by humans. In response, government - which is also not human - should produce effective regulations (also not human) to get companies to comply.
Lets not NOT acknowledge the benefits of Walmart. That said lets not blame Walmart or whatever corp it is for not taking individual responsability. Just delete the app...use it, talk to whom you love, delete, redowload etc....
BAM! Scott is an articulate, effective, powerful, fearless, thought leader. And he’s right! I gave up Social Media and stopped watching cable news in 2015… The shift in my life was dramatically significant… I am definitely happier than most people in my orbit.
He's used to teaching university student that's why he's shouting y'all. He's trying to keep your attention and for a good reason. Everyone who stopped watching because he doesn't present like everyone else is missing the point entirely
i'm dissapointed in the lack of acknowledge he got from the host and the audience. is it just me who thinks this sounded so absolutely fucking clear? and that the miscomunication led to them letting their emotions get in the way of their logic. like the host. he mentioned how he was very close with people who work in those companies, and that theyre not bad people. and theyre doing really cool things. but Scott was talking about the company as a whole and their economic effect, lack of economical responsibility and possibly hidden agendas.
It hits too close to home. Most of the people in that audience have an iPhone in their pocket, which they only bought because it's a status symbol. It's very hard for people to admit that they themselves are part of the problem.
absolutely loved it! Scott is a fantastic communicator and, despite his obnoxious attitude, is someone who actually cares for the community and the greater good. TED boss, Chris Anderson, rarely makes appearance in talks but he did this time since he wanted to kind of save face after a 17 minutes nonstop rants! One of TED’s best for me!
I have to admit, I've also been caught up in the "Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google emotional appeal." They've done a great job branding themselves. I am more likely to support less regulation and less government influence in those companies than with other for-profit companies. I think that's changing now, though, because they've established themselves and the innovation has leveled off. In the beginning, they were a completely new thing, but now they aren't and they should be treated like any other company. Special consideration should be given to companies that are new and innovative so they can build themselves into a position where they can begin to pay back what has been given to them. Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are at that point now.
It shows how powerful these companies really are; they've manipulated so much of the population to believe they are for the Greater Good that they don't even need to repress criticism of themselves.
Usually I try to get into a Ted Talk, get really bored and go away..but this guy gets it. "People need to believe in a super being - whether that's god, super heroes, playboys, celebrities, or other giant entities." Beautiful way to start a conversation and enlightening because I've never thought about it.
Thank you so much for making this video avialable to common people. I thank Mr. Scott Galloway for this wonderful mindset shift he has created and as a business owner what are our resposibilities and systems to create in future for a wonderful world to be created, since we all (Us and our coming generations[Eg.Kids] ) are going to live in this future world of our's, we need to make it happen. Awesome Insights and thank you so much TED!
Scott Galloway's presentation on the power of Apple, Facebook, Google, and Amazon was really eye-opening. He showed how these big companies have become a huge part of our daily lives and the problems that can happen when they focus too much on making money instead of caring about society. I agree with him that having too much power can lead to bad things like unequal wealth and irresponsible behavior. His call for new laws and a rethink of our values was really important. Overall, I appreciate his honesty and think this kind of discussion is crucial for understanding how technology affects our lives.
14:32 Loved his conclusion. The whole problem of these gigantic companies is that they don't actually generate any value that improve people's lives (it's not on their main projects at least). It's just ads and webpages, and they end up influencing many others to pursue the same. I find it very sad when I see smart people and whole companies and startup's entirely dedicated to developing webplatforms/apps because it's just easier and profitable.
I worked with some of the nicest Amazon employees (Amazonians) in my work for one of their contractors. I think the company is evil and soulless nonetheless.
Thank you Scott. The points you made have helped me find some more solidity in several beliefs that I hold dear. I really enjoyed the fact that there is an opening FOR Q&A however Chris seemed to cherry pick Scott's answers in an effort to push his opinion instead of delving deeper into the meaning of the presentation.
Jinxz Nobody needs one - and still you are using one right now. The right kind and the right use habit makes this technology extremely necessary for exponential development of civilization. _______ Also, I don't "blindly" trust Google or what it delivers to me - I trust humans and the research that was done to create that database.
this is social media, and we get all this great alternatives views of our reality thanks to it, the use we gave to tools is our responsability, we should and must be smarter than algorithms, choose what to see next ...
The interview at the end isn't really worth watching because the host completely misses the point and his questions are just frustrating, making Galloway repeat himself.
The fact that he had to repeat the message is clearly laying out his intention and focus of the talk, and a host bowing out blindly to what the speaker has exposed would only make his credibility more shallow. It's not like anyone will read this message, but the stance the Q&A man did was indeed necessary, and fair by all means.
He spends the most time talking about the consequences of facebook/google/amazon being as big as they are. The "how" is just the first few minutes. Not complaining though, it's an important message.
I feel like Chris Anderson's intervention brought nothing to the table. He had something in mind, clearly, but did not express himself well. I don't know if he honestly couldn't formulate it well, or didn't have his thoughts in order, or if he was lightly trying to persuade Scott to change his narrative. It completely contradicted SG's argument, so it was pointless of him to make those questions. I honestly don't think Jeff Bozo is "horrified that some things happened the way they did". How are you purchasing several companies, reducing competition, making huge job cuts and waking up horrified because things happened that way? What Scott is saying is that power corrupts people. No one should control that much and the people who are in charge of making checks are not doing their job correctly. I'm glad he stood his ground. I think Anderson's comments felt like a common spectator's and not like the TED's CEO. And honestly, "spectacular rant"? wtf
I will say this because of the video, it will make you think and want to say something. With great power comes great responsibility. Money is not everything, and love for humanity needs to find its balance back into all people. I am a firm believer in if you work hard, you will go places. We cannot blame those who took their stand in these areas for their actions. We all as a whole have been taught these mindsets and principles and have forgotten the most cherishable ones of all. Love for each other. This video should make you see the future holds a lot of AI job positions, leaving millions upon millions of people won't need to be hired. With this, these companies surely have the lead, influence, and power to help change, shape, and direct these new jobs. If they do not, they will no longer have jobs of their own because nobody will have the money to pay for their items. But we also have the power in choosing to help promote them on or demand for changes necessary to help us all move forward. If nobody takes a stand or makes any changes, the effect will be too much-damaged economy for anyone to truly fix, for the chaotic mess alone will be merely impossible to measure or control. Perhaps you do not see my point, but connect the puzzle pieces and you see if we do not come together to help one another, the primary survival mode we have been taught will kick in, 'Survival of the fittest' God | Family | Love is the key :)
Even this video is also hosted on youtube a platform provided by Google. So it is also to be mentioned that these companies create value for the people. It's not bad to grow or at any length but the intentions must be right and values of humanity must be honored.

Can anyone find provide some references for his statement that the number of people a person loves is the most important predictor of making it to over 100? And his statement that: “Children with poor nutrition but a lot of affection have better outcomes than children with good nutrition and poor affection.”
Now this is a fucking TED talk. It's been a while since I've seen such a critical and entertaining talk. This might actually make people question their behavior.
Facebook ALSO tap into what you DISLIKE. That's also emotional, perhaps even more. I think people spend more time on posts / comments they don't like. Arguing with other people and getting emotionally fired up. Facebook want you to stay on their platform as long as possible. The longer you stay, the more of YOUR time and attention they can sell and make money on. Their product is YOU and YOUR time and attention. So it is in their interest to also increase polarization. They show you both what you love and what you hate. Optimal would probably be to show posts and comments you disagree strongly with and ads of things you love and agree with. Facebook does not have altruistic motives. Further more, "good" organized desinformation have the similar agenda. If you want people to fight, feed BOTH sides with desinformation about the topic and the 2 sides. When 2 (or more) sides fight there is often a 3rd party that gain from that. Facebook is a very good platform to do this. They can fly under the radar of the fact checkers too.
The blame rests with the consumer. Consumers repeatedly fail to exercise their power in the marketplace. You get manipulated because you allow yourself to be. The same goes for politics. We can blame systems all we want, but all that does is deflect and try to shift away the responsibility from where it really exists. It's easier to find a scapegoat and blame the boogeymen, or some conspiracy, than it is to look in the mirror and examine yourself and your own choices. The systems are not some abstract that ideologues would lead you to believe. Systems are people. The systems don't function without your input. Data is one of the most valuable commodities of the modern age, why are we giving it away for free? People are the commodity and we are basically giving away the farm for nothing in exchange. An illusion, a psychological hit, that like any other drug, always leaves you coming back for more. That's all you really get. The entities amass billions and you are left with nothing that has physical, tangible, buying power in the marketplace. You can't go to the store and try to trade all those likes you got on social media for some products. But the data these entities harvested from you while you use their services definitely resulted in pure capital for them. The "free" services you are being offered, by various social media and related platforms is in no way properly compensating you for the data you give them in return. And it's this data that has given these entities the power to become as powerful as they are. As long as consumers passively engage without pushing back when it's obvious you're being used, nothing will change. The various web platforms and social media are tools, very useful tools, that can be used to enhance our lives. But the less engaged we are, and the more passively we use them, the more they are being manipulated towards goals that are not in our best interests. These platforms undergo continuous changes and shifts that do not consult the user. If the people are the primary commodity, or product, than they should share in the design and forward goals of these mediums, and ultimately, the profits. It definitely isn't working that way right now, but that's only because the users of these mediums allow it. If they keep shifting these platforms in ways that abuse you, yet you continue to use them, then you only have yourself to blame.
We are are surrounded by a population of mostly materialistic idiots. They are also content with being that way? Did commerce/capitalism stoke this fire of idiocy and/or cause it?
This guy was brilliant, host not so much. The question isn't if they're bad people, most of them are not, at least not the employees, not going to defend the people on top because they know what they're doing and refuse to change despite having the power. The question is how has it become this way. And the answer is a broken system. During the era of enlightenment we where doing great things, not just in industrialisation, but developing philosophy and art and new ideas all over the place. Then came the World Wars and disrupted all that, and the focus became solely on the industrialisation part, the pure logic part that would help us win. And then came the cold war that continued this and developed the free market propaganda as a counter measure to communist propaganda. And our parents, not having the internet, bought all this hook line and sinker. And we're now left with a world where every single person is trained to worship money and care about nothing else, to treat corporations like gods, to measure ourselves by the brand name we carry, by our bank accounts. And all that other great stuff from the era of enlightenment, that's all gone. Nobody today cares about what it really means to be a great person, a great person is a person with a lot of money, no need for philosophy, or even basic good manners. Obviously this will create a fully corrupt society, because it's easy to make money and become great person by embracing greed and selfishness, values don't make a profit after all. This guy is 100% right, this money religion needs to die before we do, and we will if we let this continue. The money these companies have could end world hunger for good, we have to ask ourselves why they don't and instead waste their time on trying to brainwash us into buying junk we don't need?
Everything in moderation. The Internet is good for connecting but when it hits our dopamine drive and everyone is competing...we need a new Internet. We can reform it. Scott is speaking about the ability to do so, and we just have to be smart individually
Scott you put your case very well. The problem is that the legislators just wont take on the Giants. There is a long list of reason why and they will eventually gobble everthing.
I don't think he was a sell out. He's interviewed Zuck, Bezos, and Paige in previous TED talks and he just isn't fully convinced that there are bad intentions. Which is what the speaker acknowledges that they're not bad people; the positions that they hold in society simply pits them against what would be the most societal good that there business could do.
Neal, I understand your opinion and agree partially. It felt like he felt the need to explain to the big bosses that the opinion expressed was not his opinion or TED's opinion. Maybe he was afraid they would fire him. I also agree in part with with Nelson Vargas. Maybe they are not bad people and as the author said. It's their monopolistic position on the market that puts them in that role of the bad guys. I wonder what would happen if this 4 giants got together after watching this video and made the decision to just make a 1% twist in their atitude. Investing that 1% in projects that made a real difference in the lives of those who need, and I don't mean the poorest fringes of society. We, the privileged ones, behind our iPads and androids and PCs and Macs, are also in need of the fundamental. They just had to find people who already are addressing those fundamental needs and leverage their actions. Maybe in a parallel reality, or in another life we could see this happening... who knows...
That is the only part of this Ted talk that caught your attention? The interviewer is reinforcing the fact that you are a sheep. Now go buy a tent and stand in line for the next iPhone!
The brightest minds of my generation are working on how to make people click ads.
Andrei Nowikow I don’t know but I have like never been influenced by those ads. I ignore them like a hot girl I have crush ignores me. Lol
Amit Gupta
Not really.
Because the demand is there.
truely it is,for thr salary
This is what happens when we're indoctrinated to believe the American Dream is to become rich.
Howl
This guy needs a bigger stage
That's exactly what I was thinking the whole time
Agree
Exactly!!
He's already a big n famous RUclipsr.. search Scott Galloway.. n his channel L2
I agree
*OH FINALLY SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT!!!!*
I thought you was to mention "The present" (a book that a lot of people advertise on the comment section of many videos).
No, you mean "finally someone other than the conservatives are talking about it" seriously, I've heard more anti-billion dollar corporation conversation s from Republican s over 15 years ago than democrats
It's metropolis. Same old, scared of tech, fear mongering that's been around since the dawn of industry.
Man, I'm currently reading this book. Just going across Google's chapter. I have to say: this is one of the significant books I have ever read! I'm also trying to quit social media and this books highly encourages me to do so.
Thanks, Scott. For showing me the healthy path.
Just quit it, delete, I did it weeks back you wont tell the difference. You will likely read more, excercise more, interact more, just delete them!
And the best part is most of people don't realise, and those who realise, don't care a lot.
Either they don't care or they're too cynical to think they can change it.
Just one more reason to delete your farcebook and twarter accounts. You can live without them.
+A. Garcia twitter isn't in this grouping
its been a longtime since I logged in Facebook. I have realised their persuading threat.
We care. But we are powerless to do anything about it. Money buys public policy. And these companies have plenty of that. If we want this to stop, we first need to make political donations illegal.
What an orator. I loved the way he was clear, cutting and humorous at the same time. It was worth a watch.
What he says really makes you think. That’s the point, open your mind.
One thing he unfortunatly didn't mention in the interview in the end is:
We humans tend to project human traits on non human entities. Agreed. They are a fiction created by laws that were created by humans. In response, government - which is also not human - should produce effective regulations (also not human) to get companies to comply.
Well said Johannes!
👍🏼
Dude companies are run by people. People make decisions on how they run these businesses.
B-b-but, corporations are people, my friend.
I'd rather die young than be on Facebook every night. Been 2 years without it and I feel fantastic.
Dude nobody visist on Facebook nowdays ..but instagram is fucking lit

Who else is here after watching his latest Ted talk
Me
scott ritter and george galloway manipulated me here lul.
Me
He's incredible, what a great teacher
The Algorithms are strong with this one
I give this guy a standing ovation! Finally, someone said it!
This is why I haven’t unsubscribed from Ted. Interesting topic, fantastic speaker. Bravo 🍻
Wow! This is why I believe in TED. Chris is doing an amazing job from long.
I love it when people who have something real to say slip through and get ted talks
BAM! Scott is an articulate, effective, powerful, fearless, thought leader. And he’s right! I gave up Social Media and stopped watching cable news in 2015… The shift in my life was dramatically significant… I am definitely happier than most people in my orbit.
Normally I would yell back at the screen “stop yelling at me!” But this guy can yell all he wants. Bravo!
He's used to teaching university student that's why he's shouting y'all. He's trying to keep your attention and for a good reason. Everyone who stopped watching because he doesn't present like everyone else is missing the point entirely
Karolina Bramwell I agree with you strenuously, thank you.
3 years later... but this is exactly why I love him. He reminds me of me and I fucking love it 😍
This was awesome, I'd say even the best TED talk I've seen so far.
Scott Galloway is amazing.
Is there any point in public debate in a society where hardly anyone has been taught how to think, while millions have been taught what to think?
WE NEED PHILOSOPHY IN OUR SCHOOLS
lights473 I whole heartedly agree. Philosophy is my go-to.
Yes. What is the alternative? Yes.
Worryingly spot on 👍
Goddamn
i'm dissapointed in the lack of acknowledge he got from the host and the audience. is it just me who thinks this sounded so absolutely fucking clear? and that the miscomunication led to them letting their emotions get in the way of their logic. like the host. he mentioned how he was very close with people who work in those companies, and that theyre not bad people. and theyre doing really cool things. but Scott was talking about the company as a whole and their economic effect, lack of economical responsibility and possibly hidden agendas.
Brian Godoy People rise to the defense of their sacred cows.
Mightbe Sherwood
Or their cash cows.
Like corporate news people don't ask hard questions because they are afraid of losing access.
It hits too close to home. Most of the people in that audience have an iPhone in their pocket, which they only bought because it's a status symbol. It's very hard for people to admit that they themselves are part of the problem.
I think the point of the host is he was playing devil's advocate for conversation sake.
Brian Godoy it’s because the audience works for those companies (or their spouses or best friends).
absolutely loved it! Scott is a fantastic communicator and, despite his obnoxious attitude, is someone who actually cares for the community and the greater good. How Ironic for this video to be on RUclips !
just proof at how to target the larger audience
It shows how powerful these companies really are; they've manipulated so much of the population to believe they are for the Greater Good that they don't even need to repress criticism of themselves.
Have you watched Black Mirror Season 1 Episode 2? This is exactly what it is
you can search for it at an other video platform. oh, wait...
Should Say Something About RUclips Allowing TRUTH
That's The Difference

Worse, actually.
Great talk, heady stuff. Just bought Galloway's 'The Four' and the first chapter is so compelling I'm looking forward to crunching the rest tonight!
Wow first time I've ever seen a TED curator jump on stage like that lol seems he struck a nerve. Badass.
great speaker, well articulated

thank you.

yeah lol why did that host annoy me
this video aged so freaking well
the comment section is filled with denial and fools complaining that someone is speaking too loud.
deep
Not anymore. Some got the point
Best TED talks that I've heard in 2017/2018.

Best Ted talk ever!
Good talk and all that, but the title is somewhat misleading.
Yes. s/How/Why/
Mo Rue Why do you think so?
He spends the most time talking about the consequences of facebook/google/amazon being as big as they are. The "how" is just the first few minutes.
Not complaining though, it's an important message.
Excellent talk; thought-provoking, precise and loud - like punk rock.
We need more of this kind of guys

This needs to be shared👍🏼
Great talk. His voice needs to be heard.

thanks

I like the breakdown of this
Even this video is also hosted on youtube a platform provided by Google. So it is also to be mentioned that these companies create value for the people. It's not bad to grow or at any length but the intentions must be right and values of humanity must be honored.
Based on which principle should this exempt them from accountability and contributing with taxes like everybody else?
Bigger stage needed for this guy ... he is really good
this is social media, and we get all this great alternatives views of our reality thanks to it, the use we gave to tools is our responsability, we should and must be smarter than algorithms, choose what to see next ...
Great insight and a good conversation to have.
And so begins our reflection on what we've become. Lets do this one right ladies and gentlemen. We can change our way of life more than superficially.
Can anyone find provide some references for his statement that the number of people a person loves is the most important predictor of making it to over 100?
And his statement that: “Children with poor nutrition but a lot of affection have better outcomes than children with good nutrition and poor affection.”
I search about his book "the four " on google and going to buy this on Amazon
pratik khadtale ironic it is on sale on amazon
did you read it yet? was it any good?
Feel free to buy from another venue. Also recommend Ecosia for searching: every time you search, they plant a tree.
@@d1p70 it was awesome bro
Now this is a fucking TED talk. It's been a while since I've seen such a critical and entertaining talk. This might actually make people question their behavior.
Excellent questions at the end.
Wow, TED posting a red pill, that's unusual!
The red pill? Hah, not really.
"the red pill" is a metaphor for feminism written by a trans woman
Amy Dentata great that you mentioned, I guess it turns the whole thing upside down!
Amy Dentata you haven't watched 'The Matrix' hey?
the red pill is a Mike & Ike gummy
Can you really blame consumers in a monopolistic/oligopolistic system? That's what Scott's getting at
We are are surrounded by a population of mostly materialistic idiots. They are also content with being that way? Did commerce/capitalism stoke this fire of idiocy and/or cause it?
Great job Ted team!
That was SPECTACULAR RANT !!
This dude’s RUclips channel is insanely informative
Anyone like to hear that counter-argument?! I would.
Really nice talk!"!
Scott is a brilliant man. This went too fast for me. I couldn't keep up to be fair.
awesome content... presentation is raw
very.....deep......... #greatcontent
Andrew Yang. He is the only one in politics who is knowledgeable about this and willing to 1. Hold them financially accountable and 2. REIGN them in.
I hope the 4 CEO response to this man
Thanks SCOTT 😊

Ted Talks
You’re clueless as to the scale of comparative market power between the organizations you named. Try again later.
Great video TED and I like your videos so much :]
Wow, truly an eye opener.
His book is also incredible.
Scott you put your case very well. The problem is that the legislators just wont take on the Giants. There is a long list of reason why and they will eventually gobble everthing.
Good job Scott.
I fucking love this guy
Great speech!
I think this video should go for around 3 billion + views ....
I validate this presentation as worthy of perception.
Ok seriously, who is this man? Although he is shouting on the top of his voice...I gotta agree.
Sanjana0998 check out his channel L2 inc for more.
Guy at the end interviewing, what a sell out...TED is turning into a corporate tool now as well it seem with the framing of his questions.
Miguel Borges da Silva then they would be replaced by people more focused on profitability.
That is the only part of this Ted talk that caught your attention? The interviewer is reinforcing the fact that you are a sheep. Now go buy a tent and stand in line for the next iPhone!
I was also thinking same.....
Great video :)
