Salmon fishing on the Thurso Day 2 the water temperature is still just under 20oc and the Fresh fish coming in from the colder sea don't want to entertain a fly
Its Strange Colin , fishing is usually better when the wind blows but I think because the water temperature was so high it just put the fish off Cheers Iain 🥃
Another lovely bit of river Iain... that upstream wind makes casting a pain but you won't be in pain from the midges! Looking forward to seeing more of the river and hopefully you got a fish or two more! 🎣😉 cheers James 🥃
Thanks James I have fished in Caithness a few times when the breeze has dropped and at the time swore I would never return but the magnetic pull and the breeze keep me heading north Cheers Iain 🥃
Hi Jerome when I was leaving someone had left the gate open and I chased the sheep back down the track . I didn't want to end up taking the blame for letting them escape . Luckily the farmer saw me and I got a thanks for helping Cheers Iain. 🥃
Different day the second day Iain and that wind was not helping at all even though the water looked lovely. There were a few fish showing mate but didn’t want to know the fly at all. Love the scenery up there and the piece and quite Iain just wasn’t meant to be. Can’t wait for the next one mate, tight lines. Steve. 🍷
I couldn't believe that I hadn't a fish come at the fly Steve I saw so many when I had the camera turned off or changing the battery Just one of those days need to try harder 😉. Cheers Iain 🥃
if you ever fish in Caithness without a breeze you will find it a nightmare The midge population dive in on you in force and it doesn't mater what repellant you use they will attack . bring on the wind🙏 Cheers Iain 🥃
Ten out of ten for perseverance Iain. Some of the pools you fished looked really good and in surprised you didn’t get a fish. Really enjoyed the video though
The water tempreture was 20oC Andrew and it was only the odd residents that wanted to play . Thank you some anglers think its all about catching but we have a lot of days that we practise Cheers Iain 🥃
the conditions for Caithness were a challenge Big Man it is difficult to catch fish when there isn't a breeze . and it also keeps the dreaded midge at bay Cheerrs Iain. 🥃
a beautiful place to be Steven , on occasions the weather can be a bit off-putting . and drive anglers to despair and when the wind drops the midge population come out in force and always seem to head for me . I itch just thinking about them Cheers Iain 🥃
I am afraid that to fish on the beats let from the hotel are let by the week or three days . The lower river is let by the Thurso angling association and can be productive especially in the summer months. I believe it can be booked on the internet Cheers Iain. 🥃
Fantastic video! always enjoying your vids. Just a question; I see you always use double handed in these small rivers, isn´t easier with a single hand?
It's easier to roll or spey cast with a double handed rod Majid I find that I have to overhead cast with a single handed rod and get hacked on the banking behind me . Thanks for the assistance today Cheers Iain 🥃
That was a blustery day Iain and you could tell you were fighting it most of the time. Quite a few moving up but not hanging around you might say given the conditions. Another day? 😎👍👍
I was there for the week Mr Mazo and fought the good fight . the water temp was putting the fresh fish off and there were better days to come for y week Cheers Iain. 🥃
Iain great content in difficult conditions, did you not try a small tungsten cone head given the pace of the river especially below the mill. Ron Sutherland at Helmsdale has a number of great small patterns with tungsten heads that can work really well in fast flow conditions.
I did have a few cast with a cone head and also had a fish down the millstream with a sunrae I did hear of one fish getting caught the week I was there with a cone head Cheers Iain. 🥃
some anglers get bored if they aren't catching Paddy and those that pass comments saying that they have lost some valuable time watching videos should take up golf I would like to thank you for your comments Cheers Iain. 🥃
the line I was using was a Rio Scandi short (floating) and a Floating polly leader . the water temp was high and no need to fish below the surface Cheers Iain 🥃
its amazing how many of us know your pain lol of a sore back slogging all day for salmon horrible conditions there and have had a few days like that myself but as they say a bad days fishing beats a good day not tight lines
There are a lot of us go find out the world of frustration Thomas and on occasions celebrate and these are the days that drag us back to the river Keep your rod bent Cheers Iain 🥃
The River Thurso isn't a river that has a lot of depth to it James and even although the water is peat stained the salmon can see the fly on the top of the water so in the summer I always use a floating line and floating polly tip
I gave that a try when I first started fishing on the Thurso 30 years ago and never had any success but I think looking back it was probably the gillie that I had for the week Cheers Iain. 🥃
Hi Tam the wind can cause problems with a single handed rod and also the size of salmon in the river would make it a nightmare if you hooked a monster fresh fish . Cheers Iain 🥃
@@IainSB wind has to be not much ofcoarse, big fish is a challenge but must be possible, you know the place I don’t so I don’t go against local knowledge 😌
What a beautiful setting. Tight lines Iain and to all fellow salmon anglers.🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
It was a good week fishing Stephen and the company in the evening helped make the trip Cheers Iain 🥃
Love your videos.
Thanks Arthur. I am grateful to have comments like yours because it does take a bit of effort to edit them tight lines.
Cheers Iain
Tough conditions Iain, well done for sticking at it, looking forward to the next installment, thanks.
Thanks Paul. Every day is a new challenge but always enjoyable Cheers Iain 🥃
Lovely river but conditions where horrible , big thumbs up to you Iain for keeping at it .
Its Strange Colin , fishing is usually better when the wind blows but I think because the water temperature was so high it just put the fish off Cheers Iain 🥃

I fish in Donegal Iain and on a calm muggy day the midges would strip a man to the bone!! 🦴😂
That Thurso river is beautifull especially around the farm, love it, next time will be more successfull

Just a tad breezy 😂 nice film

That looked like uncomfortable conditions! Day 1 looked brilliant! 🎣😄

Gods county looking good Iain.

Fair play to you Iain..Difficult conditions
Hi again Blondie The weather in Caithness is a great leveller and anglers have to fish to the conditions and finish the day tired
Cheers Again. 🥃
all of this looks lovely water I would love to fish a beat up there

Well Ian you can't catch one every day, keep the videos coming.
some anglers get bored if they aren't catching Paddy and those that pass comments saying that they have lost some valuable time watching videos should take up golf
I would like to thank you for your comments Cheers Iain. 🥃
What style of line and sink tip/leader was you using Ian?
the line I was using was a Rio Scandi short (floating) and a Floating polly leader . the water temp was high and no need to fish below the surface Cheers Iain 🥃

Nae luck today do you use a sink tip or just floating line goes out well 🤞next time.

With that upstream wind you should have been backing up the slower pools.
I gave that a try when I first started fishing on the Thurso 30 years ago and never had any success but I think looking back it was probably the gillie that I had for the week
Cheers Iain. 🥃
@@IainSB Next time you are up talk to Jim Cameron, he certainly used to be a practitioner of that art when I fished with him back in the 70's.
👋
Thanks again Arthur 🥃
There’s 18 mins 14 seconds of my life al never get bk
Think yourself lucky. I HAD TO SUFFER IT ALL DAY UNTIL I GOT TO THE BAR IN THE EVENING😉. Cheers Ian 🥃
Thanks for sharing, would love to fish that with a onehand rod.
