Just wanna add that the air being pumped into the exhaust actually does more than water down the emissions. The extra oxygen being fed to the converters makes them burn off more of the unburnt contaminates in the emissions. Maybe that’s what the movie clip guy meant by “more to the sneakyness”. Lol. Good video though. I ditch them things too. Right along with the converters. 😁

When emission standards first became a thing in the 60's the pumps just diluted the exhaust with fresh air. Once cats became mandatory, the pumps did make them more efficient at lower RPM/lower loads by introducing more oxygen causing them to run hotter. I've personally checked the temperatures of stock cats at idle, with and without the smog pump connected on the same car, and there was quite a difference. Many newer cars, and aftermarket cats, don't require the additional oxygen though.

I did that to n my 89 5.0 convert... took off all the smog plumbing but the engine was still in the car. I bought those plugs online for the ports but had no clearance to tighten them in. I took one to the hardware store a sized up one to a bolt(s) ..loaded the bolts threads with lock-tite. and a boxed end wrench was all I needed..I also had to find a way to removed all that carbon.. two very short wire brushes bent to fit and spun them about 40 times in each hole...

As an automotive technician in PA with a state inspection license, but also owns a 91 Fox with a 393w and Holley EFI, here's my input on almost all of the emissions crap, especially cars that are 20+ years old. The emissions components seem to be common failure points, or induce engine problems. Right now, emission components and standards are destroying diesel engines and the diesel industry as a whole, but that's a whole other story. As for gas engines, the only emission systems that actually work worth a damn, are the EVAP, PCV and usually, CATs. EVAP is basically just taking gasoline fumes/vapors and using them to help the engine startup, which of course is a good thing. PCV, well, every engine needs to ventilate the crankcase so reusing those vapors is beneficial because it creates a good closed loop flow of air to ventilate it, so that's beneficial to the engine. As for CATs, when they dont clog or get stolen by scum of the earth people, they serve a simple good purpose with almost no negative impact(Horsepower) to pump gas engine vehicles. Everything else is ridiculous, EGR is simply dumping HOT exhaust fumes back into the engine severely reducing engine performance, essentially making the engine work harder therefore producing more emissions than it normally would if it was breathing cool, clean fresh air. Plus the EGR stuff always clogs, leaks, or gets too hot that it needs it's own seperate cooling lines, which by no surprise, usually always leak. The Air pumps are a joke, because they just make the engine work harder to drive the pump to pump fresh wasted air right out the exhaust. An engine is essentially an air pump, now you're attaching a smaller air pump to it, but instead, you're just pumping that clean air right out the exhaust while the engine has to produce more emissions because it has to work harder to create the energy to drive that pump. Even on the electrical modern pumps, the engine will have to work harder to spin the Alternator to create the energy to operate all of these electronics. Energy isnt just created out of thin air from nothing with no emissions. It has to come from somewhere. Also, these older cars, most of us only put 500-1000 miles on them in a year, yet there is usually no exception for that in states that have strict emission laws. Why should a car that is only driven 500 miles a year, have to adhere to the same strict emission rules of a car that is driven 20k+ miles in a year? I'm sure the politicians and unelected officials(EPA) have no concern about emissions when they're on their private jets, yachts, limos. Let's not forget how when Governor or California at the time, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who signed and pushed very strict emissions regulations, at the time owned and drove one of the first ever civilian Humvee H1s that got like 3mpg or some BS like that. It's a double standard that's seen everywhere. I'll close my argument with this, Earth is not infinite, it will pass. Our physical bodies are not immortal. These lunatic tree huggers believe earth is, and they WORSHIP it instead of the creator. I'm not saying blatant abuse of Earth by absurd pollution or dumping chemicals and trash into the ground are good, I'm saying, observing it on a micro scale like they do and promoting fear with it, is lunacy, especially when their rules only apply to us and not them.

Sorry, but you don't understand what the various smog components do, and why they do it.
It's fun to keep perpetuating misinformation. In the early 90s Ford told us how to remove stuff properly if your hot rod didn't need it to pass inspections. Old wives tales are fun, aren't they.

I've also seen a video or two about to avoid having to buy the block off plates, just cutting the ends off of the crossover tube, clean them up, and flip them over. Put some high temperature RTV on the heads, bolt the flipped over ends back in place and drive away happy. However, I do feel the block off plates are the better option. Also, you'd like to "clear the air" about smog pumps? Ha ha ha, good one. 🦊

The previous owner removed the smog pump on my '89 vert but he left all of the vacuum solenoids and drove wood screws into the vacuum tree to close them off rather than getting plugs and it really bugged me. I spent some time looking at vacuum diagrams and last weekend I removed all of the vacuum lines, including the tree that you show, removed the solenoids and tucked the wiring up and it now looks way cleaner. As far as I can tell there is no need to keep that vacuum tree because all of those lines (on my car anyways) are associated with the smog system. Apparently disconnecting the vacuum solenoids from the wiring harness will throw a code but they do not cause a check engine light. Disconnecting them did not cause a CEL on my car.
He also had the fuel pressure regulator connected to one of those lines on the smog tree rather than directly to the intake manifold (both manifold vacuum ports on the firewall side of the intake manifold were wide open) so I corrected that while I was in there.

EGR is closed under heavy loads/full throttle so it doesn't effect power output. Under part throttle and moderate load, like cruising up a grade in 5th gear, the EGR also reduces odds of detonation.

And the two lines that point to the front of the engine I have left are capped. Does this sound correct? @surethingnow honestly, the best advice I can give would be to google a vacuum diagram. Also, I would recommend picking up a Haynes manual for your year car. They have all the vacuum and electrical diagrams in there.

Ever see the flames coming out headers? You know the hot stuff that turns headers red and tarnishes pipes.
The pump injects oxygen into the hot gases and furthers combustion on its way out. This oxygen also enhances the catalytic converter's efficiency.
Note: back in the early 90s a non cat, non pump 5.0 HO would pass the CA tailpipe emissions test except for.... Visual. Many engines were installed in restomod 60s Fords and CA only required they pass the year of CAR manufacture standards.
    Basicly just PCV.

Does anyone know what the RWHP gain from this change would be? I would assume that there is some drag from running that pump off the accessory belt. It doesn't seem like it would be a lot but I've heard of 15 to 20 HP gains from moving to an electric water pump so I know accessories can kill. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the emissions increase. I wonder if you could remove this pump, add mini cats in the exhaust system and end up with better emissions and without the complexity and power loss of the smog pump.

As @hotrodray6802 said, any power gains are minuscule. Even at 6K rpm you wouldn't feel it. There is a small weight savings though. A better idea would be to convert the smog pump into a crankcase vacuum pump and gain actual HP.

Glad to know there's one bright canuck that's smarter than the host of Ford engineers that put those cars together having to contend with emissions requirements. And Nice how you disparage the things you don't know about or even take the time to understand. Will the engine run without the Thermactor, EGR, Catalytic and most of the Vacuum systems?.... Yes Is the computer designed to do so in stock form? ...No Delete them if you like, bet you gain a whopping 6-10 Hp at different parts of the curve, and a weight reduction of 15 lbs. Why not just put a Holley EFI system on it or just strip it down completely and carb it. Those O2 sensors really don't do anything anyways, do they. Wait, bet you don't know what they are for either. Oh, I forgot. dump that useless Evap carbon canister too. Nothing like the rich smell of gasoline in the garage. Some respect for the process. The engineers did their job, and probably didn't wnat to put those systems on in the first place. Life in the 80's.
