    My mom and I have often told each other, in times of intense uncertainty and stress, "Don't worry, it will all work out, it always does," and it generally does work out. We do this as a way to relinquish anxiety about things we can't control so we can move forward. It helps us have the courage to move on in the face of uncertainty, not manifest vacations in tropical locations.

      I just had this same conversation with my mom this weekend! Sometimes when you’re facing tough shit, you need to say “we’ll get through it” just to hear that hope out loud. But then we buckle down and find ways to make it work, not just high-five and think the problem’s solved.

      Right! It seems like we're jumping to the extreme opposite now and denying the benefits of a positive mindset. Being positive has never once done me wrong. At best, I get what I want; at worse, I'll be in a positive mindset regardless. Being negative, however... Never once served me

      So true!! This happened to me while I was pregnant, all of a sudden in every corner I saw a pregnant woman or a woman with a baby and then I thought "How come everyone is having babies at the same time?" But then I realized that it was just that my mind was focusing more on that because it was something I was experiencing. I've also been told by people who are lonely that they see couples all the time, it's just what your mind selectively searches for.

  • @hannahb2306
    @hannahb2306 Год назад +1622

    It’s so toxic because there’s *nothing* wrong with thinking positive thoughts/doing things that make you feel hopeful, but you can’t get so obsessed with ~manifesting~ that you make yourself feel like it’s your fault when things don’t always fall into place, or that people who have a hard time deserve it.

    • @hannahb2306
      @hannahb2306 Год назад +100

      +AND you can’t be so into manifesting that you do nothing to actually make the good things happen to you. Like, it’s fine to have affirmations about how good things will come, but if you do nothing to make them happen, or if you try and it still doesn’t work out, it can devolve into a really unhealthy obsession.

      For real, I'm all for good vibes and prayers and mantras, but that kind of stuff has to inspire you to actually act as a force for good in your life and in the lives of those around you. Just expecting to be lucky won't actually do anything good.

    • @thebeaside
      @thebeaside Год назад +30

      RIght like I believe in ‘manifestation’ to the degree that I think that the energy and attitude and vibes you bring with you affect the people around you and how they treat you and how you interpret the things that happen. Like when I’m in a good mood, getting caught in the rain is fun instead of annoying. But like it’s not magic and bad stuff can still happen that has nothing to do with you and your vibes. There is no frequency of vibration that will prevent structural oppression or bad people who don’t give a fuck about your wellbeing doing bad things to you. Like have a good attitude and work towards your goals, but don’t think that you’re immune from the bullshit.

    Honestly, there is merit in reframing your experiences into a positive and cultivating gratitude for when small things go your way. I bet if the restaurant those girls went to was closed, they would have found something else to eat and found a reason that “everything works out for me.” Additionally, not worrying about things you CAN’T control can reduce distress.
    Can it be toxic? Absolutely. If you’re so positive that you can’t recognize you’re in a bad situation, that’s dangerous.

    I agree with you. Like, I used to be homeless a few years back, and when I was living in the shelter, I met people who had been in that situation for at least a DECADE, if not longer. Most of them desperately wished for life to be better and worked their butts off trying to make it so, but were severely depressed because nothing was working. Because disability, because discrimination, because the system simply failed them. "Manifestation," also known as wishful thinking, can't save you in that situation or create any major changes. Only action will, which means not only working hard, but also working to change this extremely broken/dysfunctionally designed system.

We are blamed for our disabilities because we have a "negative" attitude when in reality we are exhausted and resentful of navigating an ableist and inaccessible world that finds us expendable because of our inability to generate capital at the same level as abled people.

      @mercybassey3877 5 месяцев назад

      Hmmmm! I think you don’t get lucky by walking harder. For me, a lot of things have to be place for luck to happen and hard work is just one of them. I know a guy who lost his dad and he took up the responsibility of being the provider for his mom and siblings, he was doing that by working hard and he was able to feed them but that’s just very basic. He dropped out of school to work harder cos it was really getting harder for him. That didn’t look like he was getting any luck to me. But on this day he met a friend of his dad’s and he just offered something better, he accepted the offer and then went on to start working with a startup company that later rewarded their longstanding workers with Better opportunities and he was a beneficiary of that meaning he moved up the ladder and started earning well and can now help his family with ease. The luck for me in this story is where he went on the day he met his dad’s friend and also the company deciding to just upgrade the workers that have been with them for long. He would have worked as hard as possible, but the right time, the right place and the right people, that’s luck and If we are being honest, we can’t control any of those. That’s when manifestation comes in.

      This somehow reminds of something I read on Humans of NY about religion. "If a plane crashes and one person survives everyone thanks God. They say "God had a purpose for that person . God saved her for a reason". Do we not realize how cruel it is to say that if God had a purpose for that one person he also had a purpose in killing everyone else on that plane? And a purpose in starving millions of children ? For every time you say there's a purpose behind one's person success you invalidate billions of people."

  • @evaninadgn
    @evaninadgn 5 месяцев назад +281

    What saddens me is that the Law of Attraction (what the Lucky Girl Syndrome is based on) does work when understood and done properly, but it's been oversimplified and sold as something ridiculous. At its core, it's simply some form of self-hypnosis that shifts your limiting beliefs and reduces your tendency to self-sabotage. Because unconsciously, we only accept opportunities that we feel we're worthy of. That's why you often see people ruining promising relationships because they don't feel they're worthy of being happy. Or they believe that "relationships are hard work'. LOA is also related to concepts like the placebo effect, mirror neurons, etc. I've used it a lot to build my self worth and it's worked great. But obviously, it's only an addition to concrete actions and deep self work.

      And it is not the same as saying we won’t move ourselves towards that direction we want to see either. People usually JUMP into that conclusion when you have faith in something/someone will bless you, being you the good things or opportunities you want to see happening to you.
      But it is WAY easier to plan and execute when we are not carrying a mountain of doubt, fear, shame, low self worth and limiting beliefs.
      It’s like they get bother when we take strength and inspiration from a religion or philosophy, to the point of trying to scorn you about it.
      But when you are speaking negative things over your ambitions and dreams, that is too hard, too unlikely, those people don’t put that same energy to motivate us and give as a better perspective.

      I don't think this is necessarily true BUT most common because I often think of people who were just scouted to become a star or met the right person - I think it's important to also not discredit how much luck plays a part in success. It is a necessity and you can create your own luck through hard work but you may still be beaten by someone who was simply lucky. That's life too. Of course after a lucky encounter you have to put in the hard work but not everyone fully does or is talented. I'm rambling but basically YES hard work but ALSO YES good luck. I think a lot of people buying into this lucky girl syndrome do lean too hard towards wanting things to fall into their lap but it stems from deeper issues of feeling like the world is out of their hands and helplessness.

  • @StavrinaDimitriou

    To be honest with you, I really believe that the mindset can change a lot of things in your life. I used to have social anxiety, and then I met someone who never judged others and he himself was not scared to be judged. And I said to myself, if he can do it, then why can't I? And then my whole self-confidence got a boost, and my anxiety decreased to almost 0. I was much more open with others, starting conversations with people I was not close with, never had awkward moments, and I had a whole new mindset of: I can do this.
    I'm not saying that the lucky girl syndrome is correct, because of course you need to be in control of what is happening to you, but I do believe that a strong and positive mindset can change your life for the better. Mostly because the same things happen to you, but you just view them differently and in a more positive way. And that's what matters

I like when people say "this is going to be a good day" when they first wake up with the intention of seeing the best in people or having a positive mindset. You're absolutely right that the fact that it's gendered makes it so much more problematic. Lucky girl syndrome and manifestation, of course, doesn't work. No one ever would have thought it would have worked before something like tictok existed. I know very few people who have gotten good things from tictok. Also, I can't help but notice it is a certain type of girl that tell themself with a straight face that "everything works out for them". I honestly couldnt tell myself that with a straight face, too much proof to the contrary! I feel like most of the population would be in that group with me.

Not everyone has the privilege of being able to do that (hell, I can't do it all the time -- even people with zero mental health issues can't). You can be the complete opposite where paranoia and believing EVERYONE is out to get you, and that's not really all that great either. I speak from both my studies and also from what I've used for myself, positive mindsets aren't meant to blind you...they're meant to try and remind you that maybe life isn't actually as terrible and you aren't actually as awful as you think you are. It's not only ridiculous, but insulting to suggest to someone who is struggling that all they need to do is be positive-- or buy someone's course-- in order to fix their real problems.

    Manifestation itself is not bullshit at all. TikTok just made a good thing toxic again. If you struggle with things in life it really helps to do affirmations IF you being consistent. Maybe you struggle in school. And you tell yourself every day "I am smart" "I am diligent" Even if your don't believe yourself at first you will after a few times. Same with you believed that your are NOT smart because you and other people told you so often. And you will start to act on this affirmations. There are logical explanations why affirmations help you alot. Many of our issues come from negative affirmations we tell ourselves every day like "I am not good enough" I really recommend doing affirmations to everyone who struggle with certain things in life. But PLEASE don't get your informations from TikTok. There are really good books about it. Even for the ones who think it's esoteric. Books where it's explanaed why this works and how it works in your mind.

    A lot of the stuff pushed by the “manifestation girlies” can be so harmful to some people too. Not even just in a toxic positivity way, but as someone who deals with intrusive thoughts, being told “oh what you think will become real and the energy you put out will come back” is literally my worst nightmare, and when I’m dealing with those thoughts, that idea has caused me to spiral further into it. I think positive affirmations can be a useful tool, and trying to keep a positive mindset isn’t even an inherently bad thing. But when you start getting into “your thoughts will become real if you believe hard enough”, you start to get into some dangerous and low-key thoughtcrime-y feeling territory.

    Manifestation is a fancy word for the first step ofgoal setting: visualization. When done properly, goal setting begins with visualizing the end result. You don't just put it out in the universe, though... you actually take steps to work towards the goal. Proper manifesting starts with visualization and then requires planning and effort to take the next steps towards your goal. You can't just rely on luck and the universe.
    This is the antithesis of an MLM, which tends to say that no one just gets lucky, It's all hard work and everyone has the same opportunities.
    They are two completely different sides of the same coin... Lucky girl syndrome on one side and hustle culture on the other. Everyone has gotten to where they are thanks to a little bit of luck (sometimes good or sometimes bad luck) and some work (sometimes fruitful and sometimes fruitless work).
    To deny luck is to say that everyone is in charge of their own destiny which we know to not be true because bad things happen to good people. But to believe only in luck is equally ridiculous, because you have to put effort into achieving your goals.
    Why can't we have a middle ground people?!

    I don't hate this trend at its core. I used to study psychology so I have a smudge of knowledge on this topic. This way of thinking could reframe one's experiences and seems to be the antithesis of the "only bad things happen to me"-mindset, which is linked to learned helplessness and depression. As one of the girls mentioned: she used to believe that she wouldn't manage certain tasks (aka "jinx it") and that seemed to impact her motivation poorly. Thinking "hey, I *am* lucky and this *will* work" could help your motivation and reduce stress. The lucky girl syndrome sehr adjacent to positive psychology, which has many wonderful qualities.
    However, just like positive psychology, there can be some downsides. From what I learned at uni, the ideal way of thinking would be positive and believing one is in control - as Hannah says, you can't just sit back and do nothing. People without credentials selling courses/books/etc. on mental health will also always be a big red flag.
    But all in all, believing that good things will happen to you and treating the world and yourself accordingly (aka with kindness and enthusiasm) seems nice and a good break from hustle culture

It's more of a reassurance for the difficult times: everything might not be okay right now, but if I keep working and going towards what I want, I'll get there. That’s not exclusively why people run into hard times, but you’re correct. In psychology, this is referred to as the external locus of control. The person does not see themselves as the arbiters of their own fate, instead seeing massive outside forces beyond their control as the culprit for their misfortunes. In an extreme sense, this is the person who has an excuse for everything, or their social relationships suffer chronic collapse but it is always someone else’s fault. Men ain’t shit or these hoes ain’t loyal.
      The inverse is called the internal locus of control but this has a spectrum. It’s not inherently good. Someone with a primarily internal locus of control holds themselves responsible for their behavior and the outcomes they create. Someone with an extremely internal locus of control disproportionately blames themselves for everything that goes wrong.
      Balance is important. Sometimes shit happens. Sometimes you bring something on yourself. Embrace neither in habit, but continue to think critically and try to understand what is within your control despite even the most overwhelming circumstances.

The woo woo bits about magnetism and “energy” can be dismissed as nonsense, but the fact that changing your mindset has social effect, including ones that benefit you and clear the path towards what you want to accomplish….that is observably true….and not because of woo woo stuff, but because we are social creatures and the people we interact with respond to the social signals we send out. If those signals are “I’m a sad disaster just waiting to fail again” people tend to not pull you into their fold, if you signals are “I’m s cheerful optimist looking for my next opportunity” people tend to gravitate towards you and want to help you succeed. My favorite podcaster talks about this. She would be considered to be in the manifestation world. I love her because she talks about manifestation is nothing if you don’t take actual action steps. The universe (or whoever you believe in) is a co creator with you. You have to work together. Affirmations also help me when I am feeling down and unworthy.

      Exactly. That's one of the most important markers of a decent teacher - they don't tell you that there won't be challenges and that you can forever be idle. You still have to do things, but with a different mindset

    I'm going to start calling myself a Lucky Girl. I got my rent-controlled apartment because a friend worked for the company that owns my building. 15 years later I got laid off from my job. I told my landlord I would be out of town for two weeks and she asked why. Five minutes later she offered me a full time job. I'm now the bookkeeper for the company. My commute is about 30 seconds. So the luck has taken nearly two decades 😂

      I feel like I have the same sort of "luck" (except I'm Christian so I attribute it to God's work)
      My husband chose between 2 similar apartment buildings. A year after moving in we had a baby and a year later my maternity leave was finishing up and we realized it was gonna be tight if I didn't go back to work. That's about when the landlords approached me asking if I was interested in taking over managing the building while I continued to stay home with my daughter.
      We moved across the hall into the manager unit (3 bedroom) had 2 more kids and I have been able to help our house financially by managing the building while still being home with our kids. I feel blessed but I guess it means I'm a "lucky girl" lol

    Whatever you look for you find. For people who store up grievances, they will always find more examples in their life. This is what it reminds me of. If a girl focuses on all the examples of when life turned out well for her, maybe she is training herself to have a more positive mindset and/or also disregarding the times things don't work out.
    I don't believe in the "lucky girl" or "manifesting" an outcome, just wondering how much these two thought processes might contribute to it.

    It feels like this could be a good thing for mental health if you flipped things around and had the affirmation AFTER the good thing, instead of trying to have it BEFORE. If you're someone who experiences depression or mood issues, then it can be really good to consciously recognise when good things happen to you - to stop and acknowledge them and reflect on them. So if you had a positive affirmation that you say to yourself after you experience good things (even if they are as mundane as the noodle place being open) it can help keep you from obsessing over everything that ever goes wrong in your life. The problem is trying to imply causality and suggesting that saying these magic phrases will MAKE the good stuff happen.

      Anything can become negative if critical thinking is not applied to it. Affirmations are about saying the things you want out loud until they become true, and a lot of hard work goes into both saying those things out loud and working hard to make them happen. Every person who's looked in the mirror and told themselves they're beautiful, for even a week will tell you that these things make a real difference. When I'm down and something good happens, even like finding a good parking spot, I tell myself I'm the luckiest girl in the whole world and it honestly changed how I approach every single aspect of my life. Sometimes I get lucky, but saying these things to myself has taught me to see a lot of things in my life as new opportunities and now I make my own luck. And it's taken a really long while and a lot of hard work to get here. Words just help and they're free!

    Mindsets surrounding “manifestation” has always, in my experience, associated heavily with victim blaming type mentality and the insinuation that people deserve the bad things that come to them solely because their attitude etc. Practicing gratitude and not dwelling on the bad can certainly help your mental health and that is important but to equate that to moral high ground is really narrow minded. 39:14

    As someone who was DEEP in an MLM for 5 years, they love to push this “lucky girl, manifestation woowoo” crap. Although I believe that having a healthy and positive mindset can be beneficial, falling into this type of “lucky girl syndrome” territory can lead to so many negative effects. I’ve seen first hand this toxic positivity lead to the belief that I wasn’t good or “lucky” enough to succeed despite all my hard work in an MLM. Thank you for touching on this subject Hannah!

    I'm glad to see you do a video on this. As someone recovering from evangelical religious trauma and having adopted some pagan ideals all the way back in 2009. With the surge recently of witchy and pagan stuff I was excited that I might find some more resources and contacts and "my people." So, a couple of years ago I started looking on twitter and ... it was honestly the same type of stuff as I was raised with in my parent's religion. A lot of prosperity gospel and this, say what you want and it will come to you. I haven't finished your video yet, so I don't know if you say this but the worst part for me is:
    IF IT DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU, IT IS YOUR FAULT.
    This is the same thing the church taught me with praying. I was taught to ask god "in Jesus's name" and you'll get it. But if you don't it is because either A) god decided you weren't ready or worthy, or B) the devil is stopping you and it is because either you let him in by doing something wrong, or it is what you need to do in life and you need to work harder and ask harder to get it. Either way it all comes down to, if you get what you want it is because you are good enough in god's eyes. That is the same thing here. If you didn't get it, you didn't affirm right and you have some sort of negativity that is blocking you from it. It is all rooted in the same ideals, especially putting it onto girls and women, that if you have any negativity in your life be it emotional or otherwise, you will not get what you want.
    This is a long comment, sorry to anyone who reads it.

      Yessss!!!! This! I grew up with a strong Muslim influence and was always told to have faith and that not doing so meant I didn't believe enough or properly and that it was an insult to God's power and love etc. This is reminding me of that but they just removed God from the equation basically. Same energy though.

    • @tifftastic87
      @tifftastic87 Год назад +9

      @@TheYazmanian exactly! Its just a secular version of the same grift. Especially, in Christian evangelism prosperity gospel. They taught us if we wanted to have a big financial boon we had to donate to the church or tithe on a regular basis and proclaim "money cometh" and we would get rich. My parents who were scraping by were giving 15% of their income to multi millionaires in the hopes of getting rich.

      Exactly, it’s a way to explain away why something good doesn’t happen when you manifest/pray for something and it doesn’t happen. It’s the whole ‘it can’t possibly be the system/god it must be you, it’s your fault that it didn’t happen’ so toxic and victim blaming.

      I’m so glad you posted this, it was not too long. As someone who spent years (like since I found the LOA in 2015), thinking it was MY FAULT, I developed a very pessimistic, “I’m doomed to never get what I want” mindset. Hannah’s video and reading about your experience have finally helped me realize the fallacy of this attitude, and release some of the shame I’ve had for years. ❤

    From a psychological stand point affirmations should be true. You reassuring yourself is just a reminder that you aren’t in any danger. This lucky girl syndrome is more of a hope and then you focusing all your attention on evidence that supports your hopes.

  • @racheljane_
    @racheljane_ Год назад +15

    “Lucky girl syndrome” seems like a secular version of the prosperity gospel.
    Also can we talk about how it’s super weird this is being called a “syndrome”? Generally speaking syndromes have a negative health or mental health association. By the actual definition I know it wouldn’t have to be, but its colloquially true. But additionally if syndromes tend to be something that just happen to you, maybe that’s where it comes from in part. It’s very weird though.

    I think there may be a useful component of the “things always work out for me” affirmation. Our brains have a really strong negativity bias, so we remember negative things much better than positive things in general. That can be deleterious to mental health. But if you’re constantly saying to yourself “Things always work out for me”, then you are specifically looking for the ways in which things work out in your favor and leveraging confirmation bias to reinforce the belief. I bet that is really powerful as a tool for countering the negativity bias. But probably only when coupled with doing what you would be doing normally rather than just waiting for things to work out.
