    The Marseillais rushed in, fraternized with the gunners of the National Guard, reached the vestibule, ascended the grand staircase, and called on the Swiss Guard to surrender. "Surrender to the Nation!", shouted Westermann in German. "We should think ourselves dishonored!" was the reply. "We are Swiss, the Swiss do not part with their arms but with their lives. We think that we do not merit such an insult. If the regiment is no longer wanted, let it be legally discharged. But we will not leave our post, nor will we let our arms be taken from us."

    I am swiss and going to join the pontifical swiss guard. If you think they are just a ceremonial guard you couldn’t be more wrong. They are well trained, armed with the best that weapon industry has to offer and are determined to give everything, even their lifes, for those who entrusted them with their safety! With the traditional loyalty and fighting spirit of our people! Vive le roi! Vive l'église catholique!

    Elite troops generally live for this sort of moment, that one time they could distinguish themselves so singularly in the pages of history. The Swiss were mercenaries of world reknown throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, they lived for the fight but seldom cared under which flag it came.

    One of the most surreal moments of my recent years was being down in the catacombs of Paris and seeing the skulls and bones of the Loyal Swiss Guards who perished defending the Tuileries Palace in August of 1792!
    I went so far as to touch a few of the human remains which filled me with an unusual physical connection to history: This was a person who was actually at the Tuileries Palace when it was attacked by the Paris mob on August 10, 1792! Surreal!

Creusez plus profondément et étudiez la véritable histoire, l'histoire officielle qu'ils nous racontent est celle qu'ils veulent nous faire croire, même l'histoire des brioches de Marie-Antoinette est fausse.

    • @dawidjozwiak9502
      @dawidjozwiak9502 6 лет назад +21

      vsovereign3 king Louis sent messege to the Swiss with orderder to surrender but message didn't come or come but too late. The Swiss Guard was the most faithfull royal formation and the general the Swiss had opinions "royal formation" so revolutionaries didn't trust them. I think the Swiss soldiers feared of disarmament ( as a last resort loss of life ) and their concers were not unreasonable. The great confusion, problem with communication, fear and honour so we have got a legend

    • @justin764
      @justin764 3 года назад +7

      Back then many Swiss made income by working as mercenaries. Over the time Swiss people has realized that mercenary works require trust, and so they began to stick loyal and faithful to their employers until the contract ended. The way they have thought (and they were right) was that if they were to run away in fear while still in contract, their descendants won’t be able to work as mercenaries anymore by future employers, and to gain the ultimate trust from their employers and future employers they sticked loyal to their employers no matter how harsh the conditions were.

      As I see it the Swiss Guard didn't have any illusions about either Louis XVI. or the Jacobins.
      But what choices did they have anyway?
      To give a bit of added context, 9 days before this happened the Old Swiss Confederacy had its 501 anniversary.
      The perpetual peace treaty with Francis I. had been signed 276 years ago and the agreement had never been betrayed by either side.
      For 276 years the Swiss had been France's elite warrior class, nobody outranked them in prestige.
