Howfmdk get fav band. I don't to know I jus to wrote bit on was something I said and he won't tell what I said. Also he told to his to others but he won't say what I said. Wes
John K. Samson is absolutely amazing. Going from Propagandhi to the Weakerthans shows his musicianship to its fullest. Beautiful stuff. He can write energetic and hopeful lyrics, or maybe turn around and give a melancholy sort of feel to one of his songs, whether it be the Weakerthans or his solo material. Either way, great music from a great musician. RIP The Weakerthans, and may your music be timeless and enjoyable forever.
When you can make a rock song about curling that sends chills down the spine of someone who's neither played nor ever been in a curling arena....... well.... you've got something pretty special there. Canadian content at it's finest!!
How does this not have a million views. This is one of the greatest songs ever written. I think I just realized that the majority of the world doesn't know what good music/poetry is and I got real sad.
They put so many Winnipeg references in their songs as a Winnipeg er i am proud to say I live in the same great city this incredibly talented band lives
I love how they can take all these different subjects and relate emotion to landscape so well, telling a story and adding amazing vocals, melodies and rock sensibility. Simply a legendary band.
"Why.....? ---Why can't I draw right up to what I wanna' say?" Just a simple, yet effective way to give a first account example of what he's singing about. He has to ask "Why?" not once, but twice, with the question being about why he can't explain himself in one line, by doing it in two. You can really feel the embarrassment and awkwardness John seems love encapsulating in some of his lyrics. That simplicity in effectively using very little words can go under the radar, and that delicacy and intent in his word choices is really a shining example of why John is such a talented artist. That line always makes me laugh because it's just so simply funny and reflective.
Same goes, I can't wait to see them in a few weeks. Finally for the first time! It's hard to believe but it has been 10 years. Even though they tour like madmen and have been in my city 3 other times that I know of... (I wish I could have gone fellas) The Weakerthans are brilliant and their videos are all fun and unique. Very inspiring. I know (The Weakerthans) were thinking about calling it quits not too long ago, but Thank You for sticking with it.
going be seeing them in Nelson BC tomorrow. How tickets can only be 15$ is beyond me. 300 capacity intimate venue. I'm quite looking forward to it. Going to stay overnight in the parking lot in my westfalia.
I know someone says this about EVERY band, but I really think the Weakerthans are incredibly overlooked. They need to distance themselves from Epitaph (even if they're signed on Anti) because they're clearly a bit too grown up for that crowd. But anyway, whoever said "the beauty of small things" is right. Our culture needs more music like this! Can't wait to see them at Lollapalooza.
i got into curling this year (olympics) and have learned some of the terminology and relistening to this...wow, very clever lyrics. well, as per usually for Weakerthans.
Kind of disappointed that I've seen the video and the "real" story now... I always imagined that the person in the song was a woman and her partner had proposed to her. The title, Tournament of Hearts, being a reference to an all-women's annual curling championship. The proposal coming from "And I know you're out there waiting for an answer I can't give you". She's feeling shitty that she can't commit to her partner, she roars through the years, drifts through the months, slides through the days and is throwing hack weight/not putting herself 100% in the relationship. Just how I always saw it. Side Note: I LOVE the imagery in this song. The bar looks JUST how I imagined it! :D One of my favourite lyrics of all time "Elvira brings the bottle, hold it up and let it bend the figures of two rinks battling an extra end" for some reason took me ages to understand that she was holding the bottle up and watching the curling THROUGH it. I know it's probably obvious, but yeah... So, any thoughts? :)
Jordan Grant I took it similarly, more like men who struggle to connect with their loved ones, so they hide in activities such as sports and other many things.
@clcsqueejy04 haha I know, unfortunately we have lots of beibers, lavines, and nicklebacks here! I haven't heard of Bryson so I will check it out, Kathleen Edwards is another talent out of the 'twa cheers
There's nothing funny about curling. It's exactly this emotional and heartbreaking. Which is why it's such a perfect metaphor for this song is actually NOT about curling at all. Anyways this is my favourite curling song.
My dad said they used it when he was in high school. The "thwacking" sound was what got him interested in the sport, which is why he signed me and my sister up for Saturday morning youth leagues.
mmm not really...it's more like renting out the whole alley like for a b-day party. curling ice is different than hockey rinks though...it's harder to get
well i love the weakerthans and story of the year and im under 15! people can like more then one type of music. the rude comment that person made was their opinion but yet it was rather rude. i'm not trying to be bitchy i'm just telling you that people can like a different pallet of music.
The actual lyric "All the championship banners going yellow on the wall" refers to the aging of the banners, which start white, and then yellow with age. The second part of the lyric is a continuation of that image. The name of the narrator "yellows" as the night goes on. This is a reference to the earlier line in the stanza "When they pull the 50/50 and I've lost again, I'll go." The names are written on a piece of paper for the 50/50 (a typical raffle where names are drawn out of a hat, and the winner gets 50% of the proceeds.) This lyric has a parallel metaphorical meaning of a long time passing for the narrator. The entire song evokes the passage of time, where the narrator does nothing.
enhanceham Oh! I thought the lyric was "add my name". As in, the narrator gets really drunk and pencil's in their own name onto the list of Bonspiel winners. Huh. I have to re-think that one. Ha ha.
enhanceham Just checked the official lyrics on TWt web page, it IS "add my name"! Don't mean to challenge you or anything, just knew I had a reason for thinking it was 'add'! Ha ha.
I was on a miserably useless curling team in high school. I realize that the game can be played at a really high level but the death of local bullshit casual curling play is probably causing old white rural dudes to turn to oxy and heroin.
winnipeg isn't exactly "smalltown". unless you were refering to just anyone living in smalltown canada. now that i think of it you probably were. nevermind. and even but i suppose winnipeg is a relatvely small town. like tokyo is BIG. I really should stop typing. goodnight
Came to joke about listening to curling music with my buddies our first time going, ended up listening to a banger. Cheers from Texas🍻
the only song about curling that consistently brings tears to my eyes.
Howfmdk get fav band. I don't to know I jus to wrote bit on was something I said and he won't tell what I said. Also he told to his to others but he won't say what I said. Wes
Right? Christ, someone's cutting onions and I need a beer.

This is peak Canada - Love these guys…

Over all the years, this has turned into my favorite songs The Weakerthans do.
I used to listen to this song everyday on my way to work cooking at a curling club in the north end winnipeg
How does this not have a million views. This is one of the greatest songs ever written. I think I just realized that the majority of the world doesn't know what good music/poetry is and I got real sad.
dont worry about it. just enjoy it for yourself like a hidden treasure
well la de dah
three cheers for these guys existing!
hip hip hip hooray~~!
They put so many Winnipeg references in their songs as a Winnipeg er i am proud to say I live in the same great city this incredibly talented band lives
Just fabulous! This is some old school CURLING for god sakes!
I love how they can take all these different subjects and relate emotion to landscape so well, telling a story and adding amazing vocals, melodies and rock sensibility. Simply a legendary band.

Pretty sure I'll have to google some these words but I really love this whole presentation as a comment.
i love revisiting their discography, never disappoints.
I used to know every word to this song as a kid and after an hour of searching I finally found it again
Same goes, I can't wait to see them in a few weeks. Finally for the first time! It's hard to believe but it has been 10 years. Even though they tour like madmen and have been in my city 3 other times that I know of... (I wish I could have gone fellas)

great song .....untouchable.
i love this song. the weakerthans always have great lyrics
"And my popcorn spleaks the question". One of favourite things
"Now the senior bonspiel winners circa 1963
Are all staring, glaring disapprovingly
From their frame in that old photograph"
Love it.
going be seeing them in Nelson BC tomorrow. How tickets can only be 15$ is beyond me. 300 capacity intimate venue. I'm quite looking forward to it. Going to stay overnight in the parking lot in my westfalia.
Were the bar scenes were filmed at the Fort Rouge CC? I think those are Connie Laliberte's Scotties banners on the wall.
Wow! Nice song!
I just discovered this group thanks to CBC and love it!

support this band. buy their shit, see them live. they earn it so much.
I have been there, I must go back soon.
This is exactly like my home town. I love it.
Best band ever
Kapuskasing circa 1973
this song is like a window right into my past
Only 250k views still? This is a Canadian tragedy.
everything they touch is golden.
John K. Samson easily one of the best singer/songwriters of the era if not all-time!
best poet of our generation
I can never decided which of their songs is more Manitoban. This one or One Great City.
Makes you luv being Canadian!
i got into curling this year (olympics) and have learned some of the terminology and relistening to this...wow, very clever lyrics. well, as per usually for Weakerthans.
This is the most Canadian song ever....
I like this song.
one of many, many amazing tunes by The Weakerthans but what the heck am i seeing at about the 2:54 mark???
I was waiting for virtute, because its the nexst song on the disc :D
Such a charming video, but 2:53 ??? WTF?
A brilliant piece of sonic Canadiana.
I spent 2 hours playing along with James Brown records today..
I was at the one on Friday, it was great
Kind of disappointed that I've seen the video and the "real" story now...
I always imagined that the person in the song was a woman and her partner had proposed to her. The title, Tournament of Hearts, being a reference to an all-women's annual curling championship. The proposal coming from "And I know you're out there waiting for an answer I can't give you".

at 0:49, was part of this video filmed in the Rivers curling rink? i recently played in a tournament there, and it looks alot like it.
Excelente cancion!!!...
Here thanks to Roberto Mtz - Creativo 👌
John K. Samson is pure fucking gold!
are we going to ignore what is going on at 2:52?
Yes.
Chris Elliott is amazing in this song.
I just... this is.... his lyrics are too good. The only artist that writes songs that make me laugh but still take them seriously
Heeyy I just found out of this band... can you recommend me some of their songs?
@Lolz097 virtute the cat explains her departure, reconstruction site, all the albums are good
gotta love those weakerthans.
man i wish i could be at the concert tonight :(
@clcsqueejy04 haha I know, unfortunately we have lots of beibers, lavines, and nicklebacks here! I haven't heard of Bryson so I will check it out, Kathleen Edwards is another talent out of the 'twa cheers
my teacher made me do a poetry assignment on this song.
Cool teacher.
The most ridiculous extended metaphor ever but executed so well that you barely notice.
Pabst Blue Ribbon, the drink of kings!
I know this is a 3 year old comment but shit sounds sweet! I love Nelson 420
There's nothing funny about curling. It's exactly this emotional and heartbreaking. Which is why it's such a perfect metaphor for this song is actually NOT about curling at all. Anyways this is my favourite curling song.
I thought Canada was a fictional place before this and im moved.
Im thinking the same thing
Is that West Kildonan Curling Club?
i read that it is Fort Rouge
that was pretty good
...Are those old-fashioned PBRs?
Is that Pat Patterson at 2:40???
looking at the 15 year old comments, wishing i knew this band all those years ago
god they were so fucking good
R.I.P. :-(
What is with all the Weakerthans hate...
Anyways I really like the song/video regardless of what everyone else says.
You ever listen to a record? Wait................... It's on sweety. You have to understand we seek they who never...
i think honest would best describe them
@krgoheen yeah definatly FRCC
Did people at one time use actual brooms like that for curling? I did intramural curling in college but we had special brooms just for curling.
Yes. The old corn broom. I can't imagine it did much.
My dad said they used it when he was in high school. The "thwacking" sound was what got him interested in the sport, which is why he signed me and my sister up for Saturday morning youth leagues.
Alguien más vino porque Roberto Mtz siempre habla de ellos? :p
Yo
12 Dislikes = 12 People who cant curl
i think the curling club in the video is he one I worked at
As someone who played for a curling team full of losers in high school, this video is way too realistic.
mmm not really...it's more like renting out the whole alley like for a b-day party. curling ice is different than hockey rinks though...it's harder to get
SWEEP!
They're so real! I hate bands that were made up by their labels, clearly these guys weren't...
circa 1963...
ah epitaph records doesn't allow me to watch the weakerthans.
you don't wanna share eh brett?
well i love the weakerthans and story of the year and im under 15! people can like more then one type of music. the rude comment that person made was their opinion but yet it was rather rude. i'm not trying to be bitchy i'm just telling you that people can like a different pallet of music.
@McDubShack adidas sweatband is code for I'm gay and cruisin. LOL
"championship banners go in yellow on the wall, and my name when it gets closer to last call"
anyone know what this means?
The actual lyric "All the championship banners going yellow on the wall" refers to the aging of the banners, which start white, and then yellow with age. thank you so much!
and thanks for crushing my hopes of ever writing a decent song.
enhanceham Oh! I thought the lyric was "add my name". As in, the narrator gets really drunk and pencil's in their own name onto the list of Bonspiel winners. Huh. I have to re-think that one. Ha ha.

This video shouldn't load for anyone under the age of 15 who listen to bands with names like "Story of the Year".
Weakerthans rule.
nevermind, i double checked and there are too many sheets to be in Rivers.
Sounds like Death Cab for Cutie.
wow, you're cool.
Stubbies!
no kidding ... that's messed up!!
This song makes me home sick:(
winnipeg isn't exactly "smalltown". unless you were refering to just anyone living in smalltown canada. now that i think of it you probably were. nevermind. and even but i suppose winnipeg is a relatvely small town. like tokyo is BIG. I really should stop typing. goodnight
