The Range of Light: Skiing Roper's Sierra High Route

- The Sierra High Route is a 200 mile off-trail route running South to North along the Sierra Crest in California. It parallels the John Muir Trail, but stays mostly above treeline and covers more rugged terrain. It is the brainchild of Steve Roper, and relatively few people have completed it, especially in winter.
Sachin Sawant, Matt Fox, and Aaron Johnson skied the entire route in April of 2019.

Great! This video should have so many more views! As an avid outdoorsman in the east I sometimes have opportunities to bring friends or family out into the "big woods". Its during these times of sharing I realize just how much knowledge I have of the environment as a skill set. I really appreciate the depth of knowledge behind this video. It's obvious you guys didn't just go out ignorantly and decide to do 200 miles of "off trail" ski packing but rather there is many years of knowledge here. You guys looked genuinely comfortable in what 99% of people would say is an incredibly harsh environment. Thanks for sharing and educating what is possible.
No doubt! We spent a ton of time studying the route, plotting out a safe path for winter travel while still following the official summer route. Matt has a lifetime of skiing experience whereas Sachin and I have only skiied for a couple years, so we depended on his knowledge quite a bit for all the real-time micro navigation needed on a winter route like this. But yes, doing this route safely does require years of backcountry know-how for sure. Thanks for watching!

This is the coolest thing ever
This is kinda weird, I skied a route from Whitney to Rock Creek in 2019 with my friends! April 15th to April 29th! This is pretty weird, because the weather window wasn't that big and the weather was stormy before we went and stormy after, so we had to have been close? We also deviated significantly from the Roper route, and stayed higher, more like a red line or Moynier influenced route.
We didn't see anyone except for a few doing smaller loops in the directions. Would love to chat more about your trip, can't wait to finish the video!

What an incredible experience you guys must have had. So you carried 3 or 4 days of food to the resupply and planned for 7 days or did you exceed the planned mileage? I hiked the JMT when I was 20 and now I've got this winter SHR bug in my late 40's. So psyched on this video, thanks for doing it. Would love to hear about how your logistic plan versus how reality played out.
We did one food drop pre trip around the mammoth crest.

Why is Muir Hut's fireplace blocked-in?
No fires above certain elevations are allowed now. Law was written post hut construction, Keeps the snow/precip out better now as well.

For the most part, no. I think we only had 1 night where we couldn't find a campsite near a water source and had to melt snow. Easy to find streams and use our water bottle on a string technique to scoop water.
