- While appearing at the Dominion Theatre in London in 1957 Judy Garland was invited to the home of journalist Godfrey Wynn. Garland arrived with Sid Luft in tow and Wynn proceeded to interview both of them before having a chat with Judy sans her husband. At the conclusion of the interview Godfrey had the hutzpah to ask Judy to sing Over The Rainbow A cappella. Judy demurred but he kept insisting so she sang a snatch of it to appease him and charmingly chastised him during the process.
What a remarkable recording. She was so "present" and engaged in this short and lovely conversation. About 60 years on and I really miss her. Thanks for sharing this.
Fascinating
I’d luv to hear the whole thing
I’ve never heard SIDS voice
I find Godfrey rather patronising toward Garland. Also, he treats her like a performing seal: Putting her on the spot to sing for him. She, being the kind of person she was, obliged despite evidently feeling uncomfortable (as he himself said) about the microphone recording their encounter.
Judy was the biggest star but she was vulnerable and wanted to be loved so much. She fell in love easily. In my opinion I think that Sid saw a vulnerable woman who was a big star and was let go from mgm and very needy. He arranged for judy to give concerts at the palace and fixed it up for her. He arranged all her performances in those years and spent all the money she made gambling It away. When Judy’s addictions became so bad he divorced her and left Judy with nothing. She was broke. She married her next two husbands who were losers and used her and didn’t love her. All this is mentioned in all the books and the interviews about her. Very sad
