Her ‘Specials’ were enormously successful, but then her show failed. She said, ‘Nobody can beat those Cowboys!’, and then-they never brought the specials back. Sad. Like everything else about the way ‘they’ did things. I don’t care for Rainbow so much as other songs, but with Judy--I would’ve liked to hear her had she been able to collaborate with black artistry.
Judy Garland Live at Carnegie Hall is off the chart incredible, said by some to be the best performance in history. You can certainly feel the love of the audience coming through. Incredible.

I would have any singer (usually those who think they can sing) listen to Judy at Carnegie. Now that is a star LIVE like no other PERIOD.

@@kstephen7625 Well now that's a teensy bit debatable...Barbra (spelled like that) is a phenomenon; and so is Judy. One's personal preferences come to play here, and that's perfectly all right.
Garland was one of the few singers who had the pipes to out sing a jazz orchestra playing fortissimo. No instrumentalist ever had to worry about drowning her out!

There is a line in the Wizard of OZ that Judy begins speaking and finishes singing: "If the wizard is a wizard who will serve.." "Who will serve" is sung with that controlled, throbbing vibrato that Mr. Pegasus is talking about in this video. I've always been fascinated by her singing of that brief three word phrase, and now I know why - what a genius she was! And kudos to Mr. P - fascinating analysis.

When she was at her peak, such as in the movie, "Meet Me in St Louis" and "Easter Parade" and all the songs she sang, there was no one better, in my opinion. She had it all. In the movie, "A Star Is Born" she sings, "The Man That Got Away" and you can't take your eyes off of her. She's marvelous.

LOVED this Fil! Judy Judy Judy! Only the most FABULOUS woman to ever grace this earth with her HEAVENLY voice! She sang like she had balls...seriously, her powerful vocals could blow even Sinatra away! Love her more than words can express. How about this: there's Judy...and then there's everyone else! Judy had duende, a swagger. She knew her talent was other-worldly. We react to her voice as recipients of the sound; imagine what that voice emanating from inside you felt like. Judy is perfection in human form. Stunning.

When she sang, she was telling you (us) a story, and as we listened, we went along for the ride. A great entertainer can emote feelings we all understand, and with a voice like that, well, they just don't make'm like that anymore. Great analysis Mr. Fil 🤘☮️♥️

I can’t see her without always thinking how the studios treated her, kept her on her drugs so that she could work longer hours often finishing at 5 am in the morning. They practically starved her in Wizard of Oz so that she could appear thin. Being tiny, any additional weight, even if she was underweight, apparently showed on film. She became addicted to pills at 15. Then there was the harassment and the unsuitable marriages. She has admitted that her life was hard. Poor woman died of an overdose at 47 yrs.
There are so many incredible songs from that short lived series, One of my favourites is, When The Sun Comes Up.
Thank you for noting that her speaking and singing voice is the same-because recently there was yet-another-movie-made ‘about’ her, and we always land on that word. Her voice.❤️

I am an Artist (painter) and I have been called a "natural" talent. I understand this is meant as a compliment and am always grateful for any recognition. However, the "natural" as I see and feel it is the love of what you're doing and the training, time, work and commitment you put into your art. I know from many books and documentaries Judy worked her tail off most of her life. What is truly wonderful is watching Judy and her joy that comes through all of her performances.

Thank you for this vidio. Judy's voice is scary and dangerous. Other singers can make you cry,She's the only singer that could rip your hart out and throw you down a cliff. Her voice was senscer ,natural,real,personal and it feels She's singing only to you. A true gift from God was judy.

As a devoted Judy fan for over 40 years, the enjoyment I derive from your videos is immense! Judy is a vocal prodigy, an acrobat, an athlete. Having great songs to sing, and brilliant arrangements certainly helps, but so many conductors and musicians 'in the biz' marveled at her acumen both vocally and lyrically to interpret songs which communicated directly to audiences. Judy never faked it; she knew the essence of every song, and channeled its story immaculately. I believe her performances of songs are the definitive version, and, having listened to her repeatedly over the years, I can imagine to some degree how she would perform contemporary songs. Judy's style is unique to her--no one else can do what she does; her style is timeless, as greatness always is.
So effortless. Another example of true talent commanding the stage. No theatrics, no “circus” acts going on in the background, and not having to “sell” her body to take the attention away from the vocals.

I just discovered your channel and I'm enjoying it so much. I'm a 67 year old female and feel so blessed to have grown up in the musical era of the fifties, sixties and seventies. Also my parents were from the WWII generation so I have a love for big band music. Thank you for doing an analysis of Judy Garland. She's my absolute favorite. In fact, I love her so much that I named my palomino Judy Garland. Thank you again.
She's got such a beautiful, voice that has it's own great "flavour". I can't imagine being so talented. I love her "Old man river" from her tv show. Just great.
Judy Garland was the female Al Jolson of her day - no one sang like her or worked an audience half as well.

Judy my #1 favorite since my teens when "The Judy Garland Show" broadcast never missed a moment, have both DVD Box Sets filled with definitive performances of many classic songs, love seeing a young musician "get it" what her talent is all about, like so many of us can tell when watching he truly appreciating her phenomenal talent, have a feeling like me he will be a fan for life!

That vibrato!!! Liza's middle register and above are very similar to her mum's. But Liza's chest voice is darker.

The hand gesture insight on Judy's vocals is uncanny. Just wow! I got the chills listening to this performance 60 years on the same as if I were seated front and center back in 1962. In Psalms or Proverbs it says, "The Lord inhabits the praises of His people." Judy inhabits her songs with a mortal immortality. Cheers!

Thanks, Fil. She was and still is a legend. When she sang, she had you right there with her emotionally. You weren't going anywhere else until she let you go. I especially liked you pointing out how her speaking and singing voice were basically the same., and how that added immensely to a sense of intimacy with the audience. She was a total package: natural talent, superb control of her voice, emotional vulnerability, incredibly expressive hands. She was the real thing and totally unique.

I always hoped I was named after Judy Garland. I loved her voice and her movies when I was a small child. When I learned I wasn't named after her, I was sad for about 5 minutes. Then I learned I was named after my great grandmother, who was full blood Choctaw native American, and decided that was almost as good.😁What a talent Judy was. Such a lovely, vibrant voice. Also, Fil, why when you slow down the video does Judy sound horrid, like she's drunk, but she sounds so good at regular speed?
You used the word "animated", and well put . . . She seemed a creation an animator might come up with to show what "performance" could look/sound like if inventing a character. I've always felt, watching/listening to her, as though there was a tightrope she was balanced on, but could not just walk it, had to up the (performance) game. Great analysis, as always. Thank you.

Wow, awesome analysis of Judy's vibrato. I don't know that I've ever heard it broken down so intricately, and hearing your explanation, it does make total sense now that she's hitting a nearly perfect frequency. I often wonder with great singers if it's a conscious effort, gone through over and over in rehearsals, or if it just happens naturally as their voice syncs to whatever they're singing. I'm trying to think now of a performance of Judy's with extended phrases in straight tone, but I'm coming up empty. It does seem that vibrato is part of what makes her voice so instantly recognizable. Speaking of the frequency, I wonder what some of the fastest vibratos sound like, or if they would eventually level out into straight tone. One of the fastest I've seen is Dimash in "Sinful Passion," where I'm not even sure if it's vibrato or some other technique. Lots to think about. Thanks again for the analysis.

Absolutely an amazing singer and actress. So blessed with tonnes of superior talents that almost no one posess. But her life. So much misery. She died young, drugs. She was in control when singing and acting, she lost control in real life. But sure I consider her one of the best singers ever.
You did your homework Fil. Your analyses is spot on. Regarding this song I would add that its insanely difficult to sing. The song consists of so many different styles and expressions that its not easy only to keep track of the different parts. Judy Garland did it so natural, so fluently. No flaws. Pure music.
