- 2023 marks 400 years since the death of William Byrd, one of the most celebrated composers of the English Renaissance. Byrd was a Catholic living in England at a time when it was strictly forbidden to practise the Catholic faith, but he managed to escape the worst of the persecution by finding favour with Queen Elizabeth I. Many of his sacred works - including this one - are seen to be veiled references to England's abandonment of Catholicism, and the pain this caused to Byrd and his fellow Catholics.
'Ne irascaris Domine' ('Be not angry, Lord') is the first part of a double motet, the second section of which is called 'Civitas sancti tui' ('Your holy city').
Recorded in St Augustine, Kilburn by kind permission of the Vicar & Churchwardens.
Produced by Jonathan Coates.
Sopranos: Grace Davidson, Victoria Meteyard, Josephine Stephenson, Emma Walshe
Altos: Hannah Cooke, Martha McLorinan, Elisabeth Paul
Tenors: Jeremy Budd, Nicholas Madden, Toby Ward
Basses: Joseph Edwards, William Gaunt, Owain Park
Director: Nigel Short

For anyone wondering, the lyrics are Isaiah 64:9-10 in Latin.
Muchas gracias
Tenebrae Choir is simply The Best!!! Such great and beautiful performances always! Thank you for keeping true art alive!!!
Beautiful music transcends time and space. It can connect us with God. A song written 400+ years ago can be performed, recorded, and listened to by people across the globe and bring us to tears even when we don't understand the meaning of the words. God bless these singers and their conductor!
Ralf, please share your love of this unique beauty. Make it your calling card. Generations of young people never hear actual music of this quality, just garbage from the lesser culture.
This is the greatest legacy of the church and western culture.
I think I'm in love with the strawberry blonde. Oops!
Seriously, seriously fantastic singing of a glorious piece 🙏
St. Augustine and prayers doubled comes to mind.
So divine. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 But plz put some subtitle and translation even in small letters
Sublime. Thank you Tenebrae for this calm interlude in a busy day. Thank you too for the wonderful workshop in London in April.
This is the sound that made me fall in love with singing when I was 15, only performed at a peak we couldn't dream of at that age. You all are phenomenal! Thank you for sharing your talents

Be not angry, O Lord,
nor remember our iniquity forever.
Behold, look upon us, we are all thy people.
Thank you.
Created over 400 years ago for sorro and pain felt because England adandoned the Catholic faith. Now sung because the world is now abandoning it too. Have mercy Lord!
Heaven Sent Performance Of William Byrd's Glorious Music 🎶
The anger of the Lord is upon us, time to pay heed to Jeremiah and the prophets. Exquisite chant.

Maravilhoso! Divino!
Great sound as always ,congrats to all but the cameraman who steadily hides tenors when they lead and the wonderful Alegri's soprano
The highest praise I can give. You have touched my heart and made my soul sing. For a moment I felt no pain. Thank you!
Went to the concert in Namen Belgium yesterday. Was amazing!
Beautiful! Sublime! Congratulations from Brazil!
Why is Josephine Stephenson "hide" ?
Not quite Miserere, to me, but still ethereal and beautiful.
I just loved the editing in the beginning.
It looked like the two male singers were facing the blonde soprano,
when in fact they were standing right behind her and all were facing Nigel
Um dos melhores grupos de música sacra!
Delightful. I was in a chapel choir at school from 12 to 18. Nice pipe organ. I quit at least once but enjoyed it so much I kept coming back.
