My former brother in law (my late sister's ex husband) once dropped a souvlaki wrapper on a Melbourne street (yep, he was littering, bad boy) and heard a voice yell out behind him "Hey Mate!....Mate!! Pick that up Australia's a beautiful country! Put it in a bin, or give it to me and I'LL put it in a bin!" He said he knew who it was by the voice, even before he turned around and saw the bald head. He got a 10 minute cussing out by Peter Garrett on a street in Fitzroy, Melbourne, with a crowd gathering all around him, all of whom knew who the lead singer of Midnight Oil was.
Bro in law said he just wanted the ground to swallow him whole.

Midnight Oil were highlighting Indigenous People's rights. This song is all about giving them back the land that was taken from them.
    Lyrics -
    Out where the river broke
The bloodwood and the desert oak
    Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in 45 degrees (that's about 114 Farenheit)
    The time has come
    To say fair's fair
    To pay the rent
    To pay our share
    The time has come
    A fact's a fact
    It belongs to them
    Let's give it back
    How can we dance
    When our earth is turning?
    How do we sleep
    While our beds are burning?

Meet the Honourable Peter Garrett, former minister for education. He went into Australian politics and became a cabinet minister. (The giant lead singer).
This song is a protest about the government's treatment of the Indigenous Australians. The main lyrics "the time has come to say fair's fair, to pay the rent, to pay our share" talking about compensating Indigenous Australians for stealing their land and restoring their rights.

Fun fact: Peter Garrett (the lead singer of Midnight Oil) had a stint in Australian politics during the mid 2000's. He even got himself a couple of Cabinet positions before resigning after the 2013 election.
This song itself is meant to be an anthem in solidarity with Indigenous Australians, the lines 'Pay the Rent' and 'Let's give it back' referring to a need for a land back and reparations for colonial violence and dispossession.

Peter Garrett after the band retired went into politics for the Greens Party Australia and did alot for Aboriginal and rural comminites.
This song while about our treatment of Aboriginals and minorities.
It was part of a tour and campaign that directly influenced Australias mining and international sale of Uranium for Nuclear weapons.
One of their main goals was equality and fair treatment of all people regardless of colour. And he was about conserving the land.
But their biggest impact by far was aiding Nuclear deproliferation with their song "Blue Sky Mine". And preventing Australia contributing to the global nuclear arms race.
Australia has the largest single source of Uranium on earth. And we are the gatekeepers of 33% of the worlds Uranium. And 20% of the worlds Thorium.

Peter Garrett is 6' 4" in your terminology. His dance moves have been noted as somewhat eccentric by some lol. He is definitely an activist. I personally took a long time to like the band. However now I'm older I can appreciate his lyrics and their meanings. He sings where other's fear to tread. Issues that are unspoken of by the norm. I must say he is a colourful character and he speaks with compassion even if somewhat controversial to some. You can't help but be drawn into listening to the words because they are powerful. I love the beat and like you it's awesome of him to include the crowd !

This isn't a great example of PG's singing. This was at the end of a very, very long tour, and he was actually crook (sick) at the time of this gig. Weirdly, he's actually a much better singer approaching 70 than he was as a younger man! Listen to the studio version of the recently released song, Nobody's Child to get a sense of what I mean.

How can we dance when our earth is turning? How can we sleep while our beds are burning? (From the Indigenous Australian's perspective. Mining and Oil rigging was/is very big in Western Australia where this band originated)
The time has come to say fair's fair. To pay the rent, to pay our share. The time has come, a fact's a fact. It belongs to them. Let's give it back! (Reparations are owed to indigenous Australians).
Had an enormous impact. It's hard to find a mining company in WA that doesn't have a quota of at least 30% Indigenous Australians in their workforce.

50°C is boiling water, 45°C is uncomfortably hot. Birds and flies fall out of the sky. Original australians use clap-sticks, arround 6" long smoothed off, to keep the beat. He gave the audience participaters a similar thing to play. Try the official video, this is usually a lot faster and clearer, though this was a lot of fun.

You really should watch the music video get good sound quality, as well as the full effect of Peter Garrett...just being Peter Garrett. Yes he is 6’ 6” or 6’ 7” and he puts his “signature” dance moves into full effect in this video.
I also highly recommend “Forgotten Years,” and again: watch the video, its powerful. When it came out in the ‘80s it was like it is today, with only a few of the oldest WWII vets still alive: the very last of the WWI vets were almost gone in the 80’s.

Google the lyrics. They are well worth knowing and understanding. This song was iconic, and so was Midnight Oil. They were much of Australia's unawaken conscience back in the day. They highlighted issues that Australia needed to know about and change about ourselves and made us think. Sadly, that singer you see later became a politician, and all the ethics he spent years passionately singing about went completely and utterly out the window as he voted for and behaved almost to the total OPPOSITE unethical dimension to most the ethical issues he sang promoting. Regardless, Midnight Oil was a great and well loved band in Australia, though. The songs themselves remain untarnished, and still have a lot of ethical weight today.

No, they didn't. I know what you are eluding too but to say ''çompletely" is just an opinion. A biased, extreme opinion that is incorrect. Embarrassing. Gonski was a brilliant idea, well implemented then killed by the Conservatives.

Wanna dance like Peter Garrett? Walk through a spider's web. Seriously though, Midnight Oil did a lot to increase awareness of indigenous rights and environmental issues.

I wish that there was a band of ex-politicians such as Scott Morrison and Kevin Rudd etc. just like how the former treasurer stated a hippy festival after leaving politics 🤣

Political song. Part of every fair minded Australian. "It belongs to them, let's give it back" The indegionus Australian has both benefited and also suffered from the colonalisation of this beautiful country that we are so fortunate to live in

I met Peter Garret (The singer) a couple of times. He's a nice guy, but very focused on his mission in life to end aboriginal inequality in australia. The aboriginal folks ADORE Midnight Oil, because really back in the day The Oils where the first band to really stand up against the discrimination in australian society, and they had a huge impact on culture here, because no racist fool would dare to go up against Garret and the boys, so they coalessed a lot of cultural change and the end of a lot of shitty colonial ideologies. In fact at the time they came out really the only other artist that had stood up for aboriginal people was, believe it or not, David Bowie. They where constantly doing free concerts up in the northwest aboriginal townships , and assisting aboriginal bands in getting exposure and stuff. He actually ended up in government as the minister for environment , but was kinda terrible at it, just didnt have it together, and discovered the party machine really didnt have room for activists, and didnt run a second term, I think realising where his expertise really was, on the microphone and out there working with indigenous folks to spread the music and love.

One of my absoloute favourite bands on the planet. I do believe that if you are going to review/react to midnight oil then you have to understand australias history. Very very political songs. They are brilliant
