  • Today we are taking at look at Chrysler's 6.4L Hemi V8 engine with a major focus on the differences between the two variations offered. This engine has become a Mopar fan favorite over the past decade, found in performance-based vehicles like the Dodge Charger and Challenger Scat Pack, Chrysler 300 SRT8, Durango SRT, 392 and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. If you weren't aware, there's also a tweaked version of that engine found in the heavy duty Ram trucks.
To analyze these differences, we will look at all of the specs of each, like which engines go into which vehicles, the power output, MDS and transmission, engine block and rotating assembly, cylinder heads and camshaft specs, intake and exhaust manifolds, and more! Watch along for an in-depth look at the 392 Hemi V8!

Super sick (and needed) continuation of the “expansion” of the 5.7 V8 HEMI! I was part of the developmental team for the 6.1 HEMI so seeing how that block has grown and continues to shine in American muscle……tears of joy 🔥🔥🔥🍻💯

Need to make a correction: as many have stated, 2019 2500 and 3500 trucks used the ZF 8-speed automatic (8HP75R) with the 6.4. 4500 and 5500 still use the Aisin 6-speed.

I bought a brand new 392 Hemi long block from Mopar without MDS that was built Feb 2021 and can confirm that it does in fact come with the BGE engine block painted orange and T356 aluminum alloy cylinder heads and the new revised "hellcat" lifters. It’s a shame that it still has the same hyper-eutectic pistons and tightly gapped piston rings which means the engine cannot be safely boosted past 6-7 PSI without pulling and replacing the pistons.

Let me help you out a little. The ram 392 has the same displacement as the car, but that's all. The car has a slightly bigger bore than stroke. The truck has whats called an underbore. The bore is larger than the stroke. The ram has completely forged internals and revs slower. The truck version is raited lower power than the gm, but will out pull it. The gm has a big bore and short stroke. All of your torque is made low with a long stroke motor. The cummins is built the same way the truck 392 is built. There are guys that use the truck 392 as a hotshot. They're pulling 15k+ all the time and getting over 400k miles out of them. The truck is built heavier than any other gas motor on the market. The truck also has an oil and transmission cooler. The drive shaft is way larger. If you want a truck to last a lifetime but gas powered, get the 2500 ram.

There's the performance 6.4 in the regular vehicles, there's the truck version... but the 6.4 Hemi in the 2500/3500 is not the same as the ones in the commercial Heavy Duty cab chassis of the 4500 & 5500 trucks. The HP/TQ is detuned less than the pickups & the redline is also lower, approx 4600rpm. There are other slight changes. But the 6.4 in the pickups is not the same as the 4500/5500's
Those HD cab chassis trucks are detuned for longevity & Heavy loads & Heavy towing on a daily basis.

Definitely want to fix that cam spec slide. The specs might be accurate, but the 2 cams shown were measured using different measurement methods. The car cam appears to be total duration (measured at "zero"-ish lift) and the truck cam appears to be the standard @ .050" lift measurement method. As you can see, it gives VERY different numbers and it's really misleading. They're likely much closer together, the truck cam is probably 265-270 degrees of duration measured the same way as the car cam.

@@thedankgentlemann I can’t say with certainty since I have not personally tried, but it may be worth researching to see if anyone else has done. R/T life did a 6.4 car intake on his 5.7 Hemi but he had to get like an MSD box to control the runners. The truck intake MIGHT bolt right up. Not sure what kind of gains would be had though. The 6.4 truck intake could be the same as the 5.7 for all we know haha.

    • @MarspeedCars

      The Widebody adds:
      Widebody of course
Six piston front brembos (instead of four piston)
20x11 inch wheels (instead of 20x9)
      Flat bottom steering wheel
      Bilstein adaptive damping suspension
Is it worth it? For $6k yes it is. If you don’t care about that stuff then no, but if you end up paying for that stuff later it will cost much much more

Shocked the hell outta both Dad and myself when it felt stronger just easing away from the driveway, let alone won an open road where you can open it up.

Fortunately, a couple weeks before those parts went on, we put better rear shocks and springs (dealer covered fronts under the extended warranty and were still good) as well as minivan rotors and calipers like your 300 has up front with matching stock size rear rotors and factory calipers with appropriately sized and matching semi-metallic pads all around. It’s like a different car with only a couple grand in parts and a few weekends of labor! Now Dad is talking about wanting to see if the rear brakes from his Grand Caravan would fit and hunting down better injectors to work with the E85 and a thicker, Avenger R/T and 200S rear sway bar to replace the bar that they put on the V6 Touring package cars like mine…….because if a noticeable improvement in go, whoa, and carving is good, even more is better, especially on something that almost looks like I bought it from a rental agency after it was retired 😅

@@donaldsonjeoboham8759 Well if you want high horsepower then an ls as well as a truck 6.4 and an SRT 6.4 will all need stronger internals. But truck vs SRT, truck wins. The truck version doesn't have extensive testing but it's pretty safe to assume that it has stronger internals because I believe that originally they tried to use the SRT engine for the trucks but it had durability problems so they made a new version. The SRT engine was most likely bending or snapping rods. The truck version has stronger rods and pistons. I believe it is a very similar crankshaft, if not identical.

The ram 1500 never got that 6.4L hemi because it will get poor fuel economy & decrease the towing & payload capacity & people are not going to buy it. That's what the ram 2500 & 3500 trucks are for with the 6.4L hemi. The 5.7L hemi V8 has alot of power & torque in the ram 1500, no need for a 6.4L hemi V8.
