Several folks mention the "Dreaded E02 error" - As you normally use the camera, there's a flexible printed circuit that folds & unfolds with EVERY lens open/close movement. So every time you turn the camera off-on, you're putting 'mileage' on this flex. With this "PAPERCLIP" effect, a circuit break will eventually occur. Since information from the lens has been interrupted, the EO2 error will then be indicated by the LCD display - So, if you've already sent yours in for repairing this issue, or if it has yet to happen, then I'd recommend AVOIDING the open-close routine. Best to leave the mode dial on 'P' or even better a manual aperture setting, this then allows the camera to simply 'Go To Sleep' without lens storage (I believe it will also SAVE the last flash info😁). The lens only needs to 'retract' when the battery is changed; since the lens always stays out, I'd acquire a *slip-on cap or a DIY shade - All this so you can STOP 'bending the paperclip'! *I found a Walgreens/Rite-Aid prescription pill bottle (Using its dual function child-proof cap). For aesthetics I sprayed it with black paint and glued in the middle of the outside facing surface a "Leica" red dot... - Leica Parts department sells the dots (I'm a Leica camera tech so I order often from them). ** Finally to the Contax fans; the stunning Summarit lens outshines the very popular Contax T, T2 & T3 "Sonnar" formula 35 & 38mm lenses...
Bought one a couple years ago and still in great shape. I was a bit concerned about the E02 error but until now it’s looking good. I did a research and The issue is that the ribbon connecting the lens and the electronic part wears out when retracting over time , eventually will break giving you the infamous error on the crystal screen. So my advice is, leave the camera in P mode so the lens won’t retract! after a while the camera automatically goes to sleep mode, saving battery and preventing the wear of the moving parts from turning on and off all the time. Then Half press the shoot button and the camera turns on again. thing is, the lens will be unprotected so be aware . It’s that or E02... congrats btw
I still have mine from when I bought it new in 1998. Included in the box was a Leica watch. I submitted a picture to Popular Photography taken with this camera and came in 3rd in their compact camera annual photo contest.
A trick I found online years ago to set hyperlocal distance: "When you line up the green AF symbol on the focus dial with the aperture that you've manually selected, the Minilux is set for hyperfocal use. The depth of field will now cover the distance from half the focussed distance indicated at the green P mark up to infinity."
I had one. Got the dreaded E02 error on the first day of using it. Only serviceable in one place in Portugal. It worked great but felt like a ticking time bomb
Great movie that hardly anyone seems to have noticed! I remember that scene - he notices there's one pic left on the roll and takes a selfie! While complimenting the Minilux, of course.
$100? haha you sure the lens extension ribbon is not problematic or the camera/lens functions normal? Seems a little premature to know for sure you passed on a deal that's too good to be true. Even 3 yrs ago, these were on average $300-400 cameras because of the lens. And that's the average "street" price.. not dealers.
If this is anything like the CM, you can save the flash settings. I can’t remember but I think you long hold the button and then cycle through the setting and it should store your setting. If you remove the battery the settings restore to default again. Should check the manual.
Good luck in the new office digs and best wishes on your 30th. May this coming decade bring you continued good health, fulfillment, and endless family joys.
Congratulations! Enjoy your 30's. I turned in 50 on the 13th of February this year, far from imaging what was about to come... Nice photos. Last October I picked up my old Olympus Mju camera and used it for the first time with a roll of HP5 (also my first time with a black and white roll ever). Some turned out ok. I like the grain.
hope you get your hands one a Fuji Klasse W and do a review and compare it to the minilux! also a portrait session with the minilux would be informative!
I got a Leica Minilux in July 1995 and used it till april 2007 where I got my first digital camera. The Minilux is a very good Camera, it is not so compact and it is a bit heavy. The Lens is THE best of any analog compact cameras with a fixed Lens ! Leica bought the autofocus "from the shelf" from another company that made the autofocus system for many other brands, but it is a bit vulnerable, so it can break and it is expensive to repair. I got a new Minilux on the guarantee after a couple of month because the autofocus broke. I liked to use the Minilux and I shot a lot of film every year with it, sometimes I had to fight with my wife to get hands on the Minilux 😂 I still have the Minilux, but only for display in a cabinet.
Happy birthday and thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Minilux. Good luck in the new office. I am sure you will have lots of fun in the new place. Cheers from snowy Switzerland.
I got the Leica Minilux when it was new in July 1995, it is a GREAT little camera, the lens are superb ! "Not typical focal lenght" :D many compact cameras have 38mm lenses ;)
I have two Leica miniluxes. As careful in using them they both had the infamous E02 problem within a couple of months apart. This was back around in 2004-5 when the spare parts (electronic ribbon) for it was still readily available. The official Leica dealer claimed these new spare parts that they used were the new improved parts. Lo and behold it was worse than the original spare parts in the minluxes and I had the E02 again for both of them just slightly after the repair warranty. I had fun using these cameras but in my honest opinion they’re not worth the hype. Thankfully I bought these cameras in the early 2000’s when digital was coming in and so film cameras were selling for on the cheap prices $$$$!
i am so glad you made a review of this camera! i was in search of a compact camera, and i decided to buy this camera (despite the hefty price) for point and shoot because, 1) duh, it’s a leica and 2) the reviews online convinced me. but there weren’t any good video reviews about this, so thank you! i’ve fallen in love with my minilux even more! and YES PLEASE, i’d love to see your portraits on this baby! also, a happy belated to you!! much love from canada!!
Not really. There is +/-2 EV switch that you can use sort of for controlling the shutter speed in aperture priority mode but you cannot choose the shutter speed manually
Little trick regarding the flashmode Problem. In the instructions for my Leica minilux Zoom it says that you can Save the flashmode by Pressing down the Flash Mode Button for a few seconds and it works just Fine for my Camera. I wouldn‘t be surprised if this should work for the minilux as well. :)
Tiny view finder hard to deal with. I am looking at a Japanese point and shoot much like this Leica but it is the Nikon 35 Ti that has captured my attention.
Whats up Matt - Noticed that sack n save parking lot in one of your frames in this vid. I remember that parking lot - my dad was a pastor in Chillicothe for a long time. Had no idea you were from there. Small world man. I'm there from time to time - would love to connect...
Happy Birthday Matt hope it was a good one i love the channell , i still get a chance to shoot film and collect old cameras started back with film in the the early 70s
l bought a Milieux in 1995/6, complimenting my proper Leica cameras l owned at the time. However the Minilux has been an ornament in a display cabinet since about 2001 due to the dreaded EO2...l have since converted to Micro 4/3 Olympus EP series cameras now because it fits close to how l remember the well built, compact unobtrusive design of the M6 Leica......without the cost of course....You have galvanised me into action to get the Minilux fixed..To that end l will be sending the camera to a company in Poland who can be repair it.
Happy birthday Matt! Really love the color shots and the pallet you’re getting from Ultramax. That Minilux looks sweet even if it may just be a pricey rebadge. I’d worry about the electronics giving up. Fingers crossed.
Belated happy birthday, Matt😃👋🍻!!! I hope you’ve had a little party with your family! I still remember how awkward I felt when I turned 30🤪. And actually I am really impressed by the quality of the pics that came out of this little cam. Especially the color photos look very sharp and vibrant.
A great camera, pocket-sized and with real character from the lens. I've had some beautiful bokeh turn up some shots. I was lucky to buy one in 2014 when they were slightly overlooked as a Panasonic created point and shoot with Leica branding, but back then it was £100. Now, you'll need £700-1000. Yikes.

Interesting
Does this work better , more accurate than the Contax G1. I had it and after 2 rolls I sold it. The AF was hit or miss
I like the vibrant colors in the picture at 03:47, the blue rich blue sky and punchy red bricks show out the best detail and color saturation.
If you look up the manual for the Leica minilux you can default the flash off. It’s just like the contax tvs, a series of button combos.
I love the image quality these little cameras produce. This lens has so much character
I had one. Got the dreaded E02 error on the first day of using it. Only serviceable in one place in Portugal. It worked great but felt like a ticking time bomb
Just a headsup about E02 error, definitely look out for that! My CM had the same error and researched for quite a while to get it repaired
there's a scene in 'One Hour Photo' where Robin Williams awkwardly waits as the camera takes its sweet time to rewind a roll
yap, he handles the camera like a pro!
such a good movie!
Great movie that hardly anyone seems to have noticed! I remember that scene - he notices there's one pic left on the roll and takes a selfie! While complimenting the Minilux, of course.
Love this camera - I've considered it for a while. You might be the one that pushes me over the edge. Screw the algorithm.
ugh i found one of these in a vintage store for $100 and passed on it like three years ago. it hurts me.
@James Elliott god i know. too many youtubers talking about cool cameras!
@@ThePhotoDept I like how I saw a T2 on a shelf for 200 euro, but I was too young and didn't have money and not into analog photography back then

Ouch.

The color coordination between the minilux and outfit instantly got me.
Finding out Matt Day is only 30...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Awesome video as always. Can’t wait for those studio portrait shoots, want to see videos on that!
Good luck in the new office digs and best wishes on your 30th. May this coming decade bring you continued good health, fulfillment, and endless family joys.
Would love to see a whole video with using just this to shoot portraits! Happy Birthday Matt, keep on making the best film camera videos on youtube!
watching this video I thought "this can't be so expensive, it's a point and shoot!" then I looked on Ebay...
Point and shoots have skyrocketed within the past year or so. Plus it’s a Leica so that makes it even more desirable.
It’s thanks to reviews like these that perpetuate prices
I really like the 40mm focal length.

Congrats on 30 trips around the sun. It only gets better from here!
Happy Birthday, Matt always good to watch your videos :) thank you for sharing! enjoy your day and your new office
