Not sure why anyone would use an M6 with out a Leica lens, but more power to ya. You are correct in the fact that it will not make you a better photographer. Back in the old days (early 90's), I shot a Pentax ME Super with a Ricoh 50mm f1.8 lens that my professor swore was a Leica lens. Maybe I should try to find that combo again?

The reason to shoot a Leica M6 is to shoot Leica lenses (as many people say). I personally prefer the M2, M3, and M4. The M2 being my main camera for last 6 years and hasn't skipped a beat. But if you need a meter M6 is the way to go or a Konica Hexar RF, which I have and love.

Hi dude, thanks for sharing. I had a m6 and sold it. Just kept the lenses. It never felt right for me and I just hate the film loading procedure. I was used to work on a Voigtlander and I still find it way superior for my kind of use. It may be more fragile, and feels a bit less resistant, but definitely cheaper. Also i had the feeling that when I am shooting with a leica on the streets everybody is staring at me, it attracts way too much attention, which it shouldn't

As someone who started shooting before there were viable digital cameras, hell my second camera was a Nikon F3 (in many ways a better tool for general photography than any leica) the thing that makes Leica M cameras more than their lenses is that at the time it was the smallest fully manual 35mm camera and it was very quiet compared to a SLR, so if you were shooting in the streets and wanted to go unnoticed that was and still is only choice, it was discreet. The rest of it was splitting hairs. Today if you want to be discreet and are shooting digital in the street than the best choice is probably a Ricoh GR, a camera that is small and no one will take you seriously if you point it in their direction. That’s it, it is a quality too it’s nice to shoot with but those two features are what kept that camera in production long after Leica should have killed it in favor of the R system.

I'd rather use an M5 or Hexar as long as I get that sweet Summicron or Summaron quality. Who cares bout your ease of use when your pictures look like dogshit due to Voigtlander vignetting. It's not like shooting with a different M mount is that much of a difference. If that *really* doesn't make you want to go out and shoot... I'm sorry.

If someone has an urge to get an M6, get the non-TTL version. When the board goes in the TTL, you're SOL, but with the plain old M6 you can keep in in good repair indefinitely. So far as the lens cap's concerned, if you have it on the camera it won't meter--something easily discovered with the non-TTL version as well..

IMHO it’s not about the body, so much as it is the lenses. Shooting a Leica M without a Leica lens defeats the purpose. The M lenses are what makes the M series legendary. And yes, this applies too if you adapt the Leica M lenses to mirrorless. That said, it is the complete package when the M lenses are on a Leica M body. Using the beautiful M rangefinder alongside the mastery of the M lens focus tabs via muscle memory makes for a very rewarding shooting experience.

Back in 1966, I had an opportunity to buy a professional grade 35mm camera. The choice was between a range finder or a slr. I compared the features: RF is smaller but about the same weight. SLR is thru the lens framing and exposure with any lens. RF has limited choice of lens size. The slr won out. In 2021, I still feel the same way. Picture quality is in the lens choice. The body is just along for the ride. I never have expected 35mm film to give me high resolution so the Leica lens quality is really overkill. For that, I would go to medium or large format.

I had an M6 for a few months but I wasn't a huge fan. Don't get me wrong, it's a phenomenal piece of equipment but it sat on the shelf more often than not. I do miss it from time to time but in the end it wasn't a fit for me.

Dude, sell that M6 and get yourself a 1970s 35mm Summicron and a Voigtlander camera. Your setup is like buying a Porsche 911 with a Pinto engine. It's all about the lens! I used to have two M6s, I shot 95% with that old 35mm summicron. A few years ago I switched back to SLRs. Now I have two Pentax LXs, one with an old 35mm f2 Pentax lens from the 70s (much better than the later Pentax lenses), the other with a Leica 50mm summicron R from the 70s which went through a sex change, it works. That's all I have, all I need. And some cheap French wine. I live in Paris.

@grainydays ..... I would never of dropped a bundle of cash on a Leica, but I was the process of buying the cheapest Leica in the shape of a digital Leica T that is new / old stock at a UK dealer. I'd just bought a TT Artisans 25mm f2 in L mount to go with the T body, and had also bought a £20 LHC prize draw ticket for the prize of an M6 going to that months winner. I missed the live prize draw, and didn’t think anything of it ... 2 weeks later I was reading my emails after getting home from work, I opened up one from LHC only to find that I had won an M6 Titanium.... My only task now is to pick it up, and I'm now hunting for a Voightlander 35mm to start shooting with it, and looking to reduce my GAS induced camera collection to provide the funds .. The Yashica T4 will be the first to go.
    You can't get a better deal than £20 for a Leica M6 Titanium ... I'm beyond hsppy.

Still not convinced on the M6 and rangefinders in general. There are several Nikon offerings (F2, F3, F100, FM2, FE2, FM3A, etc) that are just as good if not better due to being cheaper and more feature rich. The glass is just as good at a fraction of a price.

I've shot on Olympus OM-1 to F2 to Olympus MJU point & shoot, Leica M4-P and even the mighty Hasselblad 500C/M.. the Leica M system just feels more seamless and effortless to shoot with. Felt like I could focus faster and capture fleeting moments easily compared to any other cameras I've tried. On top of that, it is built well and robust yet does not weigh a ton like the F2 and Hassy 500C/M.. IMO the perfect balance not being in the way and producing great photos.

I bought my first M6 when they came out at a special price direct from Leica. And, my main reason was “great, an M4 with a meter.” I used that camera for about 15 years and it did everything that I expected a Leica to do. It was not an M3/M2/M4 or even an M5 in built quality. The rangefinder patch ‘white-out’ because they made the RF one condenser lens less, my film counter failed with the plastic part they used, Zinc was suppose to be lighter and stronger (and cost less and easier to manufacture) and wasn’t sealed properly so there were ‘zinc bubbles,’ steel gears that were suppose to be stronger (and cheaper to make) but was not as tacktile smooth, the original electronics have a failure reputation, and generaly the workmanship/parts were not as well made/finished as the older M-series cameras. The M5 although larger is the better all around camera for built quality and features, and the later MP corrected the problems of the M6. The M6 is a good camera, but I can get along without a built in meter and have settled in with my old M4.
