When I was a poor teenager, each weekend I'd go to all the game stores in my local town and ask if they had any 'loosies' ; discs that had fallen off their magazines. If usually leave with 4 or 5 for free, some old some new - whatever they could dig out. Fond memories and my only way to play new games most of the time

Before the internet went high speed, seeing an actual game outside of a magazine had such value and these demos were so valuable to us back then because it was the only way to experience a new game without having to buy it. It was so exciting playing demo discs back then.

The original Xbox blew my mind coming from PS2 and gamecube. It was a few years after launch and a modern PC was stronger by that point but what teenager in the early 2000s had a beast of a PC? So I wasn’t prepared for just how great the games looked.

    • @roncinephile

Broadband only online meant OG Xbox had the best and most sophisticated online multiplayer. Also the first place I saw devs releasing actual DLC. The idea that a game could change after you bought it was completely novel. Blew my mind.

I wasn't into gaming that much as a kid in the early 2000s maybe because I was too young and enjoyed playing outside. I had a PS2 and would play games like GTA3, Armored Core 2 and Final Fantasy X. In mid 2002 I remember going to KB Toys and they had an Xbox demo stand with Halo playing. I played the first level and thought the animations and graphics looked good........when the second level started and you crash land on Halo I was blown away but when the Pelican drops the Warthog and you drive around I knew I needed to get an Xbox. Halo did make me get an Xbox. I loved the PS2 but the Xbox exclusives are on another level. vertex shaders really did make the different along with the powerful pc cpu and nvidia gpu.

I'm a Synthesizer nerd and years ago i always bought these Musician magazines that often came with software, Free or demo VST synthesizers and often lots of Sample libraries. Those were so awesome and i still have them. Some of them even came with redbook AudioCD tracks so you could play audio demos in your CD player and use the magazine material in the ROM part of it.

  • @MakeLifeExtraordinary

I absolutely loved these demo discs. Going the entire way back to Sega CD and 3DO, to Xbox. It was like Christmas damn near every month, getting to try new games that haven’t been released yet or those that were just released, along with rolling demos that showed off the hardware and simple things like Christmas screensavers and the such. Every time I got one, even in my 20s… I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. Now, it’s rare when we get any type of demo and when we do… Nobody ever hypes the fact that they released them. You would figure that a developer or publisher would be jumping up and down, especially before release, bringing all the attention they could get to a demo in order to sell the full game. Especially for Second and third party titles, along with Indies. Because it’s a form of essentially, free advertisement.
In any case, this brought back lots of memories and I think you guys for making this video. God bless you and thank you for everything you do.

Protip: If you own the OXM or PS2 demo disc that has the Rogue Ops demo, entering the door code from the release version unlocks more levels from the full game. You can then play until the mission where Nikki has to stop a missile from taking off. There's no way to escape the area she gets stuck in, but it's a pretty great exploit.

I remember playing a whole lot of demo discs across the PSX/PS2/Xbox years and having lots of fun with them. The first one I had for the Xbox featured Ninja Gaiden and took you up to the first boss fight. It was the first time I was introduced to games of that difficulty. As much as I loved the demo discs, I must confess I enjoyed the cover DVDs with review commentaries more. They're the things I really hold nostalgia for.

Huge nostalgia for OXM demo discs. 2003-2006 DSL didn't cut it in the rural areas we lived in so magazines, G4, and the demo discs were the only way my brother and I could discover new games. I particularly remember one where the OXM office was working all weekend on 5 starring every Guitar Hero song. Good times!

Another Running race game is Running Wild on PS1. It's similar to Mad Dash.

Got OXM, Gamefan and Next Generation mags back then. Won't ever forget the SEGA Saturn Powerslave reviews which made me get a Saturn. Duke Nukem 3D Saturn version was another great review in these mags.

This was very cool because even though I've never owned a console I have very fond memories of PC Demo Discs from that time! :D
I somehow usually preferred to play a few short demos rather than getting bored of a full version, especially because I didn't have my own PC at that time and had limited time playing on other people's hardware. 8-)

Audi makes a good point about demo discs. Consoles should do demo bundles to give exposure to games people wouldn't bother downloading by themselves.

Nice video! Definitely brings back memories. I have hundreds of demo discs, mostly PS2 and PS3, but some Xbox and PS1 as well. Haven't checked them out in quite a while but I'm glad I've kept all of them. If I remember correctly there is a demo of an unreleased Lamborghini game on one of the Xbox discs. Could be fun to check out again after all these years.
