DF Retro Play: Indiana Jones And The Emperor's Tomb Revisited on OG Xbox!

- A precursor to Uncharted? Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb on the original Xbox takes on Tomb Raider-style gaming, but transports the formula back to the character that inspired it all in the first place. It's an excellent title by a highly talented development team - as you shall discover as John and Audi play through the game on original hardware.

Good to see DF covering more Indie games.
Oh stop it you (◞˘v˘•)¬
Nice pun
I like that pun
Very punny
I'm ashamed to admit I didn't get it for a good second or so.
Picked this up recently to play on Series X. It looks and runs beautifully in 4K.
Something the game doesn't get enough credit for is the artwork and the manual. The case is gorgeous and manual is so detailed. I especially like how it describes the Xbox as some sort of ancient relic in order to naturally make the instructions fit into the form factor of Indy's dairy. It makes me miss the days of video game manuals.
Backwards compatibility allows you to play this game on modern Xbox and it was also given for free as part of Games With Gold. A classic.
I grabbed it when it was up for GWG. Never booted it up, but I will have to now.
Dang missed it
Man didn't know when was that now I actually want it
Plus it runs at a higher resolution. They're clearly playing on original hardware.
I just got a copy in ebay for 5 bucks 😳
This wasn't a high budget AAA release. It was just an Indy game...
"Junior!!"
Boo!
Your jokes are bad and you should feel bad!!
Where’s Will Smith at when you need him most at a time like this
This game can be played via back compat as well if you don’t own an OG Xbox .
They gave it away on the gold program some months ago
@@trobriandstorm yeah just last year on February
I remember grabbing an OG Xbox at the beginning of Spring Break 2003, and among the other games, The Emperor's Tomb was one of them and I really liked it. The jump from n64/Ps1 to Xbox was huge in terms of fidelity on the same screen (my brother had gotten the older two consoles and a ton of games for real cheap, and I commandeered them when he started letting them collect dust, and that helped decide on going "current gen" at the time).
I also bought with the console: Halo, JSRF, Silent Hill 2, Splinter Cell, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Dead or Alive 3, Rayman 3, and Project Gotham Racing.
Just a tad later on, between Spring Break and summer break, I would also quickly grab MGS2, Shenmue 2, Fatale Frame, The Thing, Hitman 2, PSO and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
KOTOR 1 came out later that summer too! Good gaming times.
It's too bad this is just a 20-something min let's play and not more.
I loved this game as a kid. I was amazed by the castle in Prague and played through the levels breaking into and then escaping the nazi submarine base sooooo many times. What a title.
Thanks for playing this. So many great memories. I wrote the strategy guide for this game and played this at least six times to completion. It all came instantly back to me watching you play.
I miss these type of games. Thick story driven adventure games that aren't ruined by bloated map checklists. The Collective hit it out the park with this title and Buffy.
Everything is made into an open world now for some reason. I love modern games like guardians of the galaxy or that new life is strange game that are linear from start to finish. Bloody love it.
@@JudeTheRUclipsPoopersubscribe you should try mafia 1 remake it's a really good linear game
@@KhizarKhan2001 yeah never played it. But I did buy mafia 2 all the way back in like 2011 and loved it.
In general I miss a variety of medium budgeted games yes. 😉
Awesome times playing this in high school, along with Morrowind, Splinter Cell, Shenmue 2... so many great Xbox games. Best time to be gamer!
This is one of my first childhood games, made turns with my brother playing it together - loved it!
Got it on Xbox as a back-compat game at 60fps and played like a dream on Xbox series S!
Played this on the PC at the time and I adored it! I also liked Infernal Machine which was almost a 1-1 copy of the Tomb Raider games, it's pretty hard to get back to now, where as this one is still such a breeze. The combat really helps elevate it from your typical action platformer, it feels in some ways like prototype of what the Batman games by Rocksteady would do some years later.
A great pick! Good to hear you liked the Buffy games as well. The first is exclusive on OG Xbox, the second (Chaos Bleeds) came out on everything. I loved the first game, except the horrible last level.
tbh the combat in the btvs games was ahead of it's time
Grew up playing this game.
I remember being scared shitless with the big alligator mission.
"Looks like someone's been overfeeding the fish"
@@Hulksterx i remember that line!
Great choice. I bought this when it came out, got super excited from the Official Xbox Magazine demo disc that had it. Replayed it on Xbox One recently and while it's obviously aged, it brought back a ton of great memories. It absolutely laid the groundwork for Uncharted (and had better brawling combat for sure).
This game looks incredible for the time, especially with the Xbox X enhanced version
Had this on PC back in the day. The jumping was awkward, and certain movements were a bit janky, but when you got use to them, it was a lot a fun! Probably better to be an Indy fan before you play. But what really hooked me was the combat! It was exactly how Indy/Harrison fought in the movies. Lots of fun! I use to love punching guys a couple of times, throwing them into the wall, then punching them in the gut until they fall! Felt very Indiana Jones in the combat!
It's funny, we weren't even done with the engine when we finished Buffy and STILL wasn't "done" with the engine, by the time Indy shipped, some 6 months later. These games all run on the Slayer Engine, which we created and maintained in-house. It was used for; Buffy, Indy, Wrath, Silent Hill 5, Star Wars Ep3, Getting Up, Battleshit, Killer Instinct and Strider. That engine was incredibly versatile and combat / action / adventure-focused, even though 2 FPS's were built with it. Fun fact; the majority of the levels were built by one person, using BSP (much like I and the same one person did in Buffy). The only meshes really are decorations, interactable things and of course any characters. Just like every game we worked on (The Collective and the Double Helix games I worked on), we all had great passion and were fans of the things we worked on, especially Indiana Jones, Star Wars and for me, making Strider was a bucket-list item (otherwise I probably wouldn't have gone back to The Collective/Double Helix). Fun watching someone play, after all these years... someone who can appreciate what we were going for and the times (early 2000's)... even w/o knowing how few people and how broken our tools were during the development.
The game doesn't look very good tbh. Starfox Adventures on GC looks better
@@jhkuno88 that statement is incredibly subjective and absurd.

Who cares about the new games! Yes, give us more DF retro!
One almost forgets there was a time , where games didn’t made every object you can interact with , shine and flash you so that you know what to do.
Or have the main path with all sort of bright colored things , paint or even signals that tell you where to go 😂
One forgets there was a time when games weren’t made idiot-proof haha
@@seanmcbay yeah but fromssoftware doesn’t counts , it is not that they make games , where they don’t use special techniques to make the game easier.
It’s not that they don’t go out of their ways to make games easier for everyone like other companies.
They go out of their way just to make the game even harder.
I bet in their meetings , someone stands up and says , I just came up with an idea that is going to make our players play through 10x times more frustrating , and the board of directors give that man a raise 😂.
I’m talking about normal studios , who don’t count on having a very specific fan base hahaha.
@@lawyerlawyer1215 Subnautica and Outer Wilds are perfect games in that respect. They feel like the natural evolution from the ps2 era.
The OG xbox was my first console and probably still my favourite. I have so many great memories of games from that time.
Nice to see this game getting some attention. It's got some rough edges, but it's a great action adventure and probably the best anybody's done at capturing the feeling of an interactive Indy movie.
Ya'll should do a retro with Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay! That game was simply way ahead of its time from a technical standpoint.
And it’s maddening that it’s not part of backwards compatibility. Criminal.
I believe they covered the game many times.
@@Drivenby last I checked was a PC revisit with old graphics cards lol
the collective, double helix just understood combat mechanics and what makes them good. killer Instinct 2013 is fantastic and what iron galaxy did to expand on the concept in later seasons is impressive as well.
Thanks for still giving the og Xbox some love.
This game is fucking awesome, it deserves a much more attention.
This one was a great one. I would say, it's almost as good as a "The Collective" game as the first Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was the game they produced before this one. Yeah, Buffy. Probably the best video game based off that license ever, and had an incredible combat system that utilized the level itself as well as an amazing "Street fighter"-like combo system in a 3d space. It had basically the concept of juggles, stun combos, super cancels, etc, for the first time in a 3D adventure game.
But to be fair, the fact the combat of this was a little lesser was actually pretty accurate. They knew Indiana Jones was more of a brawler type instead of implementing some hyper martial arts, and I think they did a great job given the more *physical* limitations of Indy's character.
And yes, The Collective games were pretty great, graphically, for the time they released. It may look dated now, but when it comes to there level of good movement control, and fluidity, The Collective were in a league of their own on Xbox and Playstation.
Well said. I've never seen an episode of Buffy but that game was absolutely incredible. Did you ever play the Marc Ecko game they did?
@@DP12321 Can't say that I did.
Man, this takes me back, 12years(?) ago I played an Indiana jones game on PC I don’t remember the name, but it had one under water level with octopus boss fight which I was very afraid of. Never watched any Indiana jones movies but I really enjoyed that game, this looks awesome as well, sad that most people like myself missed this back in the day.
@@mikeuk666 The point and click ones are a must
15:58 Big respect for that Operation Condor reference! Probably my favorite Jackie Chan movie of all time, haha.
It's my second favorite after Drunken Master II :D
@@szeltovivarsydroxan9944 It's honestly crazy just how many awesome movies he did from like the late 70's until the early 2000s.
I used to play this game when i was younger and I revisited it a couple years ago. I love this game for all its goods and bads.
I remember playing this game over and over in 2004. I loved it. Sad the Indiana jones game for xbox 360 and ps3 was cancelled and we never got another game on pc
Can't wait to watch this! Would love to see you all cover Infernal Machine - it might control like a spreadsheet but I think it's the best Indy game by far. Top-notch level design
Infernal Machine was my childhood game. I used to love watching my dad play on the computer.
Loved playing this game on my PS2 back in the day. Played through it again when I got my first proper gaming pc.
It absolutely kills me he didn't go through the waterfall in the very first space to grab the artifact.
😂👍
He's a games journalist... They can't play games.

John: "he's out like a light"
The whole world: "aaayyyee"
Operation Condor. One of my favourite movies of all time. I got into martial arts because of that film, and it's where my love for Jackie Chan started. Good shout
Arguably the best Indy game. Better than N64 or Wii. It has a neat PC version as well, would be a good DF Retro game!
Played this game last year on my XSX and had a great time. I can't wait to see the new game. My only fear is that MachineGames goes for a first person game and that would really sadden me, not gonna lie. Indy needs to be third person and this game really shows that. The only reason I fear it is because MG is solely known for first person games. Doesn't mean they can't try their hand at a third person game, but I can absolutely see this studio decide to do this. Xbox has so very few third person (action adventures) as it is, this is their chance.
It will be first person
@@MrXmoda Why do you think? Because they only made first person games so far? I mean I guess we could say the same about GG who made Killzone and then made Shellshock. And then more Killzone and then Horizon. I'd find it a waste of a licensed character, but I guess they can always show him in cutscenes.
This really reminded me of the first Uncharted games, I think Naughty Dog took some inspiration.
Uncharted 1 is just this and gears in a blender
@Turkey Jeff I think you give Naughty Dog way to much credit. Lol.
Got a good laugh from me at the beginning with, "PART TIME!"
The two 3D Indy action-adventures from that time (Emperor's Tomb and Infernal Machine) were both pretty great. They got the whole "Indy experience" down surprisingly well. The fighting is appropriately dirty, the whip feels decent enough, great soundtrack and sound effects, well-fitting voice actor and the whole setting including the globetrotting etc. just works really well.
As an Indy fan back in the day, these games were pretty great IMO.
I'm a bit worried about the new Indy game, though. Yes, Machine Games did great stuff and they definitely do _awesome_ B-movie Nazis, so all is good there, but Indy really kinda requires a 3rd person action adventure approach... at least I don't see a first person perspective working for that and AFAIK all Machine Games has done so far were first person shooters.
Grew up playing this on PC. Hidden gem.
Bro this shit is classic! i remember getting scared about the crocodiles in the water when falling in lol
Great Game! Grew up with it ;) Along with Indiana Jones and The Infernal Machine one of the best games for sure!
I had the n64 blockbuster edition, that raft level is rough
I always loved The Infernak Machine. Played through it so many times. Unfortunately, the last time I played it on my current PC, it kept crashing in one of the last Babylon levels.
You know..... you are kind of responsible for me buying games that i actually passed on back in the day 😅. Last purchase before this was Enter the Matrix, that was John and Alex doing 😅
Thanks for a great video my dudes 😊👍
I expect to see Otogi one day John. Seems like one you would show for xbox.
I played the hell out of this game on ps2
This game looks much better than I ever thought it would. If you told me it was an early 360 game I'd totally believe it.
Really enjoyed the N64 game. Very underrated in my opinion. Remember watching my friend play this and enjoying it back in the day :)
I'd love to see more Xbox videos from you all, at least more of these DFR Plays. Always fun to discover new (old) stuff on it. Plus, its a relatively overlooked system on youtube. I got this via GWG last year and haven't tried it out, but it seems like I really should!
I had so much fun playing this game. It did everything so well. I think I even wrote a review about it which is incredible considering I've only written reviews for 2-3 games, and of those 3 games was KOTOR.
There are so many hidden gems in that era of gaming (Xbox, PS2, Gamecube). Its really fun going back and finding new games to play. What i miss from that era are mostly the variety of arcade racing games we got, it was the golden era imo. Also, is everyhing ok John? You seemed kinda in a bad mood in this particular video, maybe tired from recording other videos before this one?
Back then: Wow, this looks so good! So much detail, all that environmental lighting, and those character models...
Now: Wow, this looks so old! Gouraud shading and blurry textures as far as the eye can see. Is that grass ending in a perfect straight line?
But damn, that combat, that music, and those sound effects....they're timeless.
Nice video John. If I could provide some humble critique, I'd drop the whole "half screen game, half screen graphics/reaction cam" or at least keep it to the bare minimum.
I'd rather see the game properly. Also, as a fellow OLED TV owner, it worries me to have static images on screen for so long :-)
Stopped right before the croc encounters 😂 dang
Attempted playing through this a few months ago. Definitely a nice looking game of the time, the controls really just shat me off way to much to play for more than an hour
I had completely forgotten this game existed! I got a tear in my eye. haha
Narrative of Self is the result of a feedback loop between “Separate Self” & Cosmos🎈
I was just playing this on Series X. It holds up well enough and it's 4K on Series X and One X
The Collective didn't do the two Buffy games on Xbox. They only did the first.
I also used to love playing this as a kid. Strange seeing it all these years later
Style points for the RLM meme opener.
I had atlantis, infernal machine, and this. good memories man.
I love this game, I played it on PS2 and I didn't finish it, you encouraged me to play it again.
The Wii game you guys were referring to was The Staff of Kings.
Ah the nostalgia - never played the whole thing, but there was demo with a couple of missions added to popular gaming magazine back in the day. I've played it on repeat.
I used to buck those out of Xbox magazine from 7/11 every month. I was a punk ass thieving teenager, but man I miss those days...smoke a hog leg right after school and snatch a fresh demo disc to play at my friends house, good times
“Have you ever tried shimmying…?” 🤣
It's pretty hard.
This is still to this day an amazing game!
the crazy frog rich amiibo goes crazy lmao
This was totally off my radar. Thanks for doing the retro play. Picked one up CIB for $13.00 shipped. Game on!
I really enjoy these!!! Keep on kicking ass fellas!!
It took me 20 minutes to notice the Richard Leadbetter Crazy Frog statue. 😅
I loved this game way back. I bought it I used for ps2 at an old EBGames. Those were the nostalgia days
Man... This game was my childhood
I'd actually go back and play this - never played a proper good Dr Jones game before!
recently played this on xbox great game im looking forward to the new one
They’re releasing a new one? I’m excited
@@iihamed711 yes in developement now from bethesda going straight to gamepass
I enjoy Indiana Jones Adventures on the SNES, although it's clumsy, it's still good, has a great soundtrack and a lot of variety, it's not only platforming/action, there are third person sections in the snow, volcanoes, etc.
Infernal Machine was also quite good 👍
cool to see a brawling system that isn't ripped from the Arkham games. Love the combat in those but seems so many games that do 3rd person melee combat since haven't tried anything too different.
I played this on Steam after a Tomb Rider binge and I wanted something similar. It takes some proper faffing about with .dll replacements and widescreen patches and fps limiters to get it working properly, but it was pretty good once up and running!
I can't unsee how he runs like Buffy
I used to love this back when it was new! Excited to watch this during the week!
Reminds me of the OG mummy games on the PS1
What a game that was!
Ah, is this an example of one of those "indie games" I hear so much about?
You shoud try the xbox exclusive from software titles like Otogi 1 and 2.
This was oneof my favouite games in the ps2 era, I hope we can get something similar again
it felt awesome to be able to whip out and steal enemy weapons from them
Bethesda's game will hopefully be a good Indie game
Wow, had no idea the game was that good. I'm looking forward to Todd Howard's release now, whereas before I was mildly curious.
Such a good game. I was so excited to play it back in 2003, and I'm glad it's on Xbox backwards compatibility. I wish we were still getting games back on xboxSX like the buffy games since you can only play them on 360.
So, this has basically Uncharted 3's melee combat, for which Uncharted needed three games to accomplish that xD
One of my favourite games of the era. I loved this game as much as "Dead to Rights"
tbh this feels like john just invited him over to his basement and played vidya games for half an hour after a coupla beers on a friday evening (in the best way possible)
I had this game on the PS2. I actually swapped my copy of Driv3r for it. We used to do that a lot back in the day, where I come from.
Yea, every time I see someone with a huge collection I'm baffled. I always had a maximum of three games at a time. I'd beat the piss out of them then go trade em for a new set every few months. Unless it had really good local multiplayer, then I'd keep it a while longer until it got stale.
So many memories playing this on the PS2
Always loved this game & the work from developer The Collective. Their brawling mechanics & gameplay is perfectly-suited for Indiana Jones.
Speaking of which & all things considered, you'd think there would be more Indiana Jones games, especially in the Tomb Raider/Uncharted-style of action-adventure exploration game.
Curious as to what Machine Games is doing.
love the little statue in your backdrop, wonder who it might be? ..seems familiar
If you're on PC? YOu can pick this up cheap on GOG as well. And they missed a relic in the chest hanging over that ledge/3 enemies. :).
I still remember the ads/marketing. "Your revolver holds 6 rounds...but your hands never run out of ammo."
It would have been kinda cool if Naughty Dog could have gotten Harrison Ford to make a cameo in UC 4.
I have a better idea! What if Lucasfilm hires Naughty Dog to do a Indiana Jones game starring Harrison Ford??? Ahh..I'm dreaming...I know... :)
Best Indy game: Fate of Atlantis. 2nd best Indy game: Emperors Tomb. I love, love, love this game. And still play it more than I should. 😁Glad you found out that while you grab an enemy you can also beat or kick them while holding them - or throw at the wall Indy then beats the enemy even harder thatn normal. Indy can also block Machetes with his own! It´s things like that. He is a really good fighter. The fights and the animation of the fights is so awesome especially for back then! Btw you could also throw enemies down ledges especially big ones and then they fall ans scream. There are over 30 combos and of course some more with bottles, chairs and table legs and so on.
Also nice you found out that move @4:54 a few times. Only happens with that enemy. It looks cool.
Yes after this game I was so looking forward to the new one cuz they said the fight will be even more dynamic but then later found out it only came for consoles. And I didn´t really liked Staff of Kings that much.
I love Indiana Jones and I didn't know about this game or about the games in general! Thanks guys! I can't wait to play this title! You made my day! Thanks!!!
@@mikeuk666 Thanks! Il look into that for sure! : )
