- In this video I'll convert legacy to UEFI windows 10 without data loss. Legacy BIOS to UEFI conversion is done using GPTGEN tool. Converting legacy to UEFI can be done with inbuilt tool also, but for using that tool your PC must satisfy some conditions, and inbuilt tool doesn't work every time, so as an alternative you can use this method.

TEXT INSTRUCTIONS:-

1) First download GPTGEN From the below link
sourceforge.net/projects/gptgen/
2) Now extract it and go inside the folder and copy the location
3) Now open CMD As administrator and type "CD (paste the copied location)" and hit enter
4) Now type "GPTGEN -w \\.\physicaldrive#" (Where "#" is the disk number in which your C: Drive is present) & hit enter
5) Now type "y" and hit enter
6) Type "exit" and hit enter
7) Download RUFUS From the below link
rufus.ie/
8) Open RUFUS as administrator
9) Select your USB Drive
10) Then click on "Select" and select windows 10 ISO File
11) Now Press "ALT + E" to enable Dual UEFI / BIOS Mode in RUFUS
12) Now select MBR below partition scheme and then select FAT32 below file system and then click on start, wait until this gets completed.
13) click on close after it gets completed and then restart your computer
14) Now go into your BIOS and look for option like "Legacy" and then change it to "UEFI" (You can use keys like F2, ESC, Del, to enter into your BIOS which works most of the time)
15) Then boot up your USB
16) Now click on "NEXT". then click on "REPAIR YOUR COMPUTER" and now click on "TROUBLESHOOT" and then click on "COMMAND PROMPT"
17) Type "DISKPART" and hit enter
18) Type "LIS DISK" and hit enter
19) Now you have to select appropriate disk type "SEL DISK #" (Replace # with the disk number which you used in step 4 i.e the disk number in which your c: drive is present)"
20) Type "LIS PAR" and hit enter
21) Type "SEL PAR 1" and hit enter
22) Type "DEL PAR" and hit enter
23) Type "CREATE PAR EFI" and hit enter
24) Type "FORMAT FS=FAT32 QUICK" and hit enter
25) Type "ASSIGN LETTER=M:" and hit enter
26) Type "EXIT" and hit enter
27) Type "NOTEPAD" and hit enter and then go to "FILE", then click on "SAVE AS", and then click on "THIS PC" and find out your C: Drive letter (D: in Most Cases)
28) Type "BCDBOOT (YOUR C: DRIVE LETTER):\WINDOWS /S M: /F ALL" and hit enter
29) Type "EXIT" and hit enter, and then click on "TURN OFF PC"
30) Now turn on your PC, windows should have been converted to UEFI Now.

Hello. At what point would I stop and boot under the newer computer that uses UEFI? After I make the USB drive? I'm currently on the "Legacy" computer and want to make my SSD with Windows boot on the newer "UEFI" computer. Or do I wait until the very end of the steps on the "Legacy" PC??
if I used a non-UEFI windows bootable usb to execute those commands in still, legacy BIOS, will it boot in UEFI if I set it up after executing those commands?

I attempted this and was all the way to DISKPART> format fs=fat32 quick and ran into the following message keeping me from proceeding. Virtual Disk Service error: The volume size is too big. I tried format fs=ntfs and it says 0 Percent completed. How long will this take?
Will this work with Windows 10 Media Creation Tool instead of .iso? Because when I go to the official MS Windows 10 iso site, it redirects me to Windows 10 Media Creation Tool instead.
I want to ask, is it possible to make the "Secure Boot" to be Enabled after convert BIOS to UEFI???

Bro my laptop kinda slowed down after converting to GPT/UEFI..and there is further another disk listed as disk1 in my laptop that says "Portable Base Layer" taking around 8gb of space. Do I need to convert that too to GPT and UEFI as it currently shows MBR (which may be the reason for slowing down)? Kindly note that my sell latitude laptop has only one hard disk. Please help
portable base layer may be a USB device and AFAIK converting to UEFI will not result in slow speeds. Thanks for your feedback

You can use NTFS also But FAT32 is compatible with older PC's too and that's why I used FAT32

Hi, I've been an old-school techie since 1986 and all this new-fangled technology REALLY confuses me..... I want to convert a new 4TB HDD from MBR to GPT so I can use the full 4TB capacity of my new HDD. I also want to re-install Windows 7 OS (64-bit) on this HDD. My current Intel-DH67BL motherboard supports UEFI but it is currently set to legacy BIOS mode because till date I was using 4x 2TB HDDs in my PC case. Now my existing of storage is filled, and I presently need 4x 4TB HDDs (yes, 16TB) for storing my 4K photographs. Can you please MAKE A VIDEO that explains this process of conversion for newbies like me? Perhaps someone can please point me to some videos that explain this BIOS-->UEFI and MBR-->GPT process? I am sure it will help me and thousands of other users who have older Core i5 systems BUT they need 4TB or higher capacity drives to store large volumes of data like me...... NOTE: I can easily buy a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD to use just as a system disk (OS only) with the OS, Primary, system, boot, page-file & dump on that disk itself.... while I can use separate 4TB SATA mechanical HDDs for all my installed Programs, Documents, Media, Data etc (I have 4 bays for 3.5 inch HDDs).

Do you have a fix for this problem or do I have to reload windows and all programs with a new clean install? Windows 10 was loaded onto a 2.0 TB WD SSD and when installed it somehow was set to legacy mode instead of UEFI. This made NO partitions on the drive only making one NFTS C drive across the full SSD. No recovery partition, no EFI System Partition and the hidden partition. Only D that says Healthy (System, Boot, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) and the windows was in legacy mode. I run large TB drives and was working on another issue when I realized that windows was in legacy mode instead of UEFI so I currently am in the middle of your youtube video trying to salvage 2 days of work instead of having to reload everything. Any ideas?
Then type format fs=ntfs. Make sure that you format the correct drive

QUESTION: Will this work for the Dell Optiplex 390 with an LGA 1155 Motherboard? I have heard that this motherboard is not compatible at all with UEFI. Is that true?

@@fDFerozDaniel The Dell Optiplex 390 with that LGA 1155 Motherboard has a BIOS menu that allows you to select both "Legacy" and "UEFI." The problem is that when you select "UEFI," when you restart the computer it says there are no readable drives that can be booted from. According to what I have read online, the Dell Optiplex BIOS menu is supposed to have an option for "Advanced," but that is not available to select. As a result, you cannot select the option to no longer use Legacy.

It will not be deleted but you have to add Linux to the boot menu to boot into linux
I switched from mbr to gpt using EaseUS before switch legacy to uefi, and now I am in the legacy boot menu. What I do?
the portion of the video where he boots the windows disk and brings up command prompt and does "disk part" etc etc. Follow that part closely. Its one of the last steps. that creates the uefi in windows the bios needs to see. Start at 5:00 and that's what you need.

It will work if your computer supports UEFI. And from the above information I'm sure that it supports UEFI

Actually yes. This process will convert your disk from MBR to GPT and as your computer supports UEFI it will automatically boot to UEFI
@@fDFerozDaniel you know am just nervous because it's the newest machine and the configurations are different from the others that you just have to choose either legacy or uefi in the boot options and in this machine both are there,no place to switch..that's why i asked if it will still boot into windows 10 after the converson without changing anything on the boot options on my laptop..maybe this can be explained in a different tutorial for the newer machines with such kind of configurations
