I like the 36mm better than the 39. Hard to explain why. I'd love to see something slightly larger at maybe a 37-37.5 with the modern band. Would be all over that
I know that this video is “old” by now, and that your channel has come a very long way since. However, I wanted to mention some things about the bracelet for reference, and for those still considering a purchase. While I disagree with many of your negatives as a bit too nit-picky for my tastes, I can understand it, and to each their own. But on the subject of the oyster bracelet: there are three micro adjustments on the underside of the clasp, allowing you to further tailor the fit of your bracelet. In this case, you probably should have added an extra link, and brought the micro adjustment all of the way in. This allows for adjustment between full links. That way, when your wrist does swell up, you can use the easy link, and it won’t flop around as much as you noted in the video.
I've had one for over a year now, and easily one of the best daily watch ever. Super comfortable (for my wrist) , reliable, and wearable day and night.
Some watches are just not made for some people. They can never seem to get use to them. I have the very same watch. The size and fit is fine for me. Mine fit without any need for adjustments. You do realize there is micro-adjustments in the clasp, only 3 but they are there. Yes it is a scratch magnet. But that is the nature of steel. I have other watches in 316 and they are the same. A high polish mirror finish is almost impossible to keep, unless you do not wear the watch. After 40 years in the tool and die industry, the scratches you see under close inspection or with the frequency of white led light are exactly what I would expect in a very short time frame. The movement problems are a different matter. I have had none of these issues. Mine may gain 2 seconds in a week. I reset it about once a month just to interact with it. It is the most accurate mechanical watch I have ever owned. Your AD did you no justice. The rotor should make almost no sound, and no +4 or -4 seconds per/day is not within Rolex specs. You must be brutal with these AD's at times. The watch is under warranty and they must make it right.
Yeah I tried adjusting the 3 micro adjustments positions in the clasp, even bought the expensive spring bar tweezers tool. I never could find a comfortable position. Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
Rolex explorer 1 is a cool watch . The scratches and scuffs you get in your watch are like scars you get during your exploration in life . You have a story to tell . That's what made it an explorer !!!!!
I bought this watch about a month ago. Overall I love it. Your right that it does scratch easy. I really like the lume when it's fully charged, looks so cool in low lighting. The problem is that it doesn't last long. Mine is 2 seconds a day fast and totally silent when you shake it. I find the bracelet as comfortable as my oyster prepetual. It's more of a dress watch than sports watch. I think of it as a dress watch that is understated and you can wear casually as well. Also, I don't need to put on my reading glasses to tell the time. The face of the watch is a classic in my opinion, nothing wasted. I plan on it being my everyday watch for now.
You have destroyed my dream about owning such a gorgeous watch and thereby saved me a ton of money! Thank you very, very much!!! The things you mentioned about the size, the scratches and accuracy are the kind of things that would irritate me too at this price.
@@seang2822 and still my 2 Seamasters run better than my submariner. It's tough because a part of me covets this watch. But my next watch may be a pre-owned planet ocean gmt
This past weekend I was at Torneau and they had an immaculate 36mm Explorer Ref 114270. I tried it on wrist and it fit incredible well. Even my gf who knows nothing about watches commented on how beautiful the watch was. I then went to Rolex to try on this exact watch (the current 39mm version). I couldn’t believe how clunky and oversized it felt. I prefer watches in the 38-39mm range but this wears extremely big. The beefy lugs betray the beauty of the dial. If you haven’t tried on the 114270 I’d highly suggest trying one on wrist. I think you’ll probably be happier with that model in your collection based off your gripes with this 39mm version. And you might even pocket yourself $1-2k in the process of the exchange.
I never had any comfort issue with my Explorer, honestly. The main positive is that is oozes quality. Period. Absence of AR treatment and this smudge and scratch magnet aspect of the case are the main issues in my opinion. Plus the fact that it sits uncomfortably between being a sports watch so nicely polished and so expensive you never do any outdoors activity with and not being, almost by definition being named "Explorer", a dress watch at all. It has become over the years the watch equivalent of an expensive SUV you never drive off-road.
hervé Chretien I wear my 2016 explorer while hiking, track driving and on the beach. No issues. Rugged and very durable. I love this Rolex. On my wrist, 39 mm looks at home. Problem with the 36 mm is the bracelet quality.
I wear my 36mm 114270 every day, all day. It's got a few scratches true, but that's life. I have no intention of ever selling it, all those hairline nicks and scratches just remind me of all the great times I've enjoyed with it on my wrist. 😁😁😁
I bot one and never regretted it. So much history. Arguably the very first sports watch, Everest expedition. Brushed center links, end links flow to strap. Low profile and is perfect if you are a 1 watch guy. Also only “watch guys” notice this watch. The people who know no horological history buy a date sub or datejust. Or a Daytona. On downside, the crystal is kinda shiny
One of the best explorer reviews I have seen, I also wish it was smaller, and 904 steel has better anti corrosive properties, but somehow people believe it is also harder than 316 steel
My research has lead me to believe that 904l does have a slightly higher hardness than 316. Whether or not that is true, in practice it scratches much more readily than any 326 Watch I’ve had.
i understand the scratch magnet issue(same thing with my two Rolex), maybe it's because the high-polish finish it has? just because it's finish so well that any scratch will be very obvious(just guessing)
Really sorry to hear you had such a negative experience with your Explorer. I picked up mine a little after you and have been in love ever since. A few comments: Based upon the timing variance and emerging rotor noise you described, I strongly suspect you had a defective movement on your hands. I've owned my watch for several months now and it's been bang-on a half second fast per day (faster on wrist and slower off but it averages out). My understanding is that Rolex is happy to take the watch in for servicing when under warranty if you're running significantly out of their +\- 2 seconds spec. My opinion is that your AD did you a disservice in not advising you to send it in... especially after the rotor noise started up 1 no way that's normal. Next comment is on the bracelet... are you aware that there are three micro-adjustment positions in the clasp? You don't have to only rely on the quick link extension, which I agree is to large a leap at 5mm. You can adjust about 3mm(?) and I found it easy to get a decent fit via a combo of link removal and micro-adjustments. Anyways, I enjoy your videos very much and best of luck on your search for your next forever watch 👍
Yeah I tried adjusting the 3 micro adjustments positions in the clasp, even bought the expensive spring bar tweezers tool. I never could find a comfortable position. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.
@@fahimmosharrof7209 You can get the most accurate (aside from taking into a watch shop of Rolex dealer) by using an app on your smart phone. There are several, but I recommend one called Twixt. You take a picture of the watch and line up the hands on the watch. Then after at least 24 hours you go back and repeat the process and it will tell you to the 10th of a second how fast or slow your watch is running. I think the app is like no more than $5.
@@fahimmosharrof7209 go to time.gov, zoom in big, then put your watch near the screen, focus the second hand on your watch while still tracking the time on your screen.
Great review. I’ve just updated from 2018 white face OP39 to a 214270 explorer. I agree with many of your comments. My OP also gained three seconds / day and likely had the same calibre as your 39 mm explorer. This was an absolutely constant three second gain, and I suspect was a regulation issue rather than an issue with the movement’s accuracy. I am delighted to see that the Explorer, with the new chronergy movement ,has gained or lost absolutely no time at all in the past five days since I bought it. I also agree that my OP 39 was too big for my 6 1/2 inch wrist ;the new 36 mil has taken some time to get used to, but now is feeling perfect.
Thanks for giving me a LOT to think about. I’ve been an Omega - Tudor - Cartier guy. Have never bit the bullet & bought a Rolex. Have been studying the heck out of them & have narrowed my focus to the Explorer and a Stainless Steel Datejust 41 with the 18k white gold bezel. Granted there’s a $4000 delta between the two, but that’s my focus. You’ve given me a lot to think to think about on two of your “hates”. The 904L Stainless Steel is not the holy grail that Rolex promotes. I’ve done a lot of research on steel. The real differential on 904L over 316L is resistance to chemical based corrosion. They’re both equally strong. Yes, the 904L is supposed to polish like jewelry as you mentioned. But it’s more susceptible to scratches. Your experienced proved that out. And I hate scratches, which is why I wanted the serrated 14k bezel over the polished smooth bezel. Plus I like the looks of the 14k better. The other thing that I had hoped would be an asset is the 5mm extension. None of my Omega’s or Tudor’s have that. And I thought this is a perfect solution. UNTIL, I heard your commentary. Again, thanks for all your keen insights. By the way, what did you buy to replace your Explorer? And did it hold its value, as I hear Rolex does better than any brand. Especially the sport / tool watches.
Thanks for watching and for the message. I sold the Explorer, lost a bit of money on it because I sold it to a dealer for a quick and safe transaction and eventually got a Submariner which I love.
“Sometimes wanting something is more fun than owning it”. So true with Rolex. I’ve owned at least five. I could never get the right fit. They just don’t offer enough adjustments to the bracelet, yet Rolex doesn’t seem to care… I’ve switched to IWC Aquatimer 3548 and an IWC XVI Spitfire and never looked back. Love my IWC’s, plus they’re not flashy out in public.
A shame it did not work out for you. I think this is the most appealing watch from Rolex and could be just the watch to have... actually after having seen two of your videos regarding this watch, I think I should go to a dealer and take a closer look at it. I must see it on my wrist...
Hi...regarding comfort on the wrist, why not have a look at the new Omega PO 39.5mm 8900 moveme nt watch? The PO bracelet is very comfortable with rounded edges and with the new micro adjustment clasp you can get a perfect fit at any stage of the day..and they are beautiful watches with a stack of tech to the movement that gives excellent value for $4800! Try one on and you will see...i am an owner of rolex explorer and a hulk..and although the hulk is very comfortable due to the glidlock system , the most comfortable watch i have is my 8500 42mm PO with the micro adjustable clasp i ordered from omega which gives me the same fit as the all new POs...worth checking out.
Paul Szczepanski thanks for the recommendation on the PO. I haven't spent a lot of time checking them out, I'll definitely give it a look. I do really like the Seamaster 300, the kind of vintage looking one but I have to look at the PO closer apparently.
Can't beat the older models IMO. Absolute classics, and much more comfortable. All those nice little things you mention are just Rolex. They are all this way.
I have owned my 1988 Rolex explorer 1016 since January 89 and it has been worn every day apart from 6 week service in 2004,it gains approx 6 seconds per day but after 33 years I can live with that
Thank you so much for your honesty. There's a lot that goes into finding one's right fit with anything. At the end of the day we have to be true to ourselves. I'm going through a similar watch dilemma albeit at a much lower price point. Your story is valuable to all in the watch community.
You have save me so much money on watches I was able to put a larger down payment on my home in the past when I have thought about getting an explorer or speed master after watching your videos I backed out thank you so much I own zero watches
Fast forward to today and you can see how this watch has become so popular and thus getting a discount is nigh on impossible as it getting one quickly. I have just bought mine at slightly less than full retail here in France and it is 6 months old. It is mint condition. However I haven't bought it to wear all day every day, for that I have a Luminox. But the Rolex will keep most of its value over a few years whereas the Luminox will lose most of its value.
Yeah I'm aware of the micro-adjust but it didn't seem to matter. It wasn't a problem with finding the correct size so much as how aggressive the edges of the watch case and bracelet were, or perhaps a combo of both. Regardless it never felt comfortable and has since been sold. I replaced it with a Submariner that I am very happy with.
roy roy No offense but do you own an Explorer? I’m a huge fan of the watch, and I can say that this is by far the most accurate review that I’ve seen. Each point is 100% true, but it’s up to each person to decide if any of these points are deal-breakers.
No offense taken. I own two exp I's, an OP and a polar exp2. So yes, I own it. First, the watch does not wear big unless you are a 5ft tall woman with thin bones. The watch is no more a scratch magnet than any other steel watch. The fact is that 904l steel is more corrosion resistant than the standard 316 used in other watches but not more scratch resistant. It has more nickel and chromium. As for scratches, they are part of wearing watches. AR coating would be nice and I agree on that point. The movement is impossible to beat by any competitor. It is the most rugged movement on the market with only JLC being nearly as rugged. The movement has almost twice the number of bridges as it's competition to make it stiffer and more armored in a way, The accuracy may have been off from what was stated, but you could have taken it back to have them regulate it to the proper spec. his accuracy was still within cosc which is a lesser standard than Rolex's standard. All in all, an incredible watch
@@JohnSmith-gs2rv you definitely don't own one. If you did, you would know that your statement is absolutely not true unless your wrist is smaller than 6 inches. It is a 39mm watch. Not even big by todays standards. I don't have huge wrists (7.4") and the watch almost looks small on my wrist.
I have owned both version's. The latest is much better in all area's. The problem l think is Its trying too hard to justify the price and feels over engineered. The 36mm has a more balanced and comfortable design on the wrist. At first it feels cheeper but after a short time you will understand and apreciate the design. Its not poor quality but a simple and reliable solution. Rolex watches were made to be tuff and durable, not item's of jewelry. The newer 39mm seems to be more of a homage to the original 36mm
Another great video thanks for taking the time to give us your well considered thoughts. I've always hankered after the Explorer 1 but it's always been a vintage model. I've tried the modern ones on several occasions hoping I'd have the same feelings but I don't. I'm the same, for me it just is not comfortable. I think some people, most probably, can just put a watch on and forget about it. But I'm the sort of person who gets irritated at the slightest thing that causes discomfort. It's just who we are. I don't think it should put others off it's a fantastic watch.
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it. I wish the Explorer wore more comfortable for me, it really is am amazing watch for the most part. If it had a glide lock clasp that. Igor have helped.
I had the same problems with the bracelet, I've been 3 times at the jeweler in my first week. We ended up removing one link and get the maximum size from the clasp position. Now it fits perfectly when its cold and it fits perfectly on a hot day with the easy link. I have to admit, that after training, its always too small, hot, cold, easy link on and off but thats just one or 2 hours but I hate it. The Submariners glidelock should be on every Rolex. Accuracy: In my first month it was +4, then it changed to +2.2 and after 2 months its steady on +1.8 each day. I dont know if money can buy something more accurate than this, AFAIK Patek has a tolerance of +5 and Omega is just ETA anyway, dont know about AP.
I had the same experience with the bracelet at first... then I discovered the three micro adjustments inside the clasp channel. Yes, just like the Seiko micro adjustments you were talking about, the difference is the hole don’t go all the through, they are just indented inside the clasp channel. I found a snug, but not too snug fit using these adjustments. My watch is from Nov. 2016 so I’m not thinking this is something they added later on.
I was aware of the micro adjustment instide the clasp. I still never could find a comfortable fit. I think it had to do with the combination of the somewhat harsh edges of the bracelet links, which would bite into the skin, and the difficulty of adjusting the size.
Good video and very useful as I’m thinking about getting one. Re the hand wobble on setting - I have a Datejust 41 and it does the same thing, but in a really clever way that I assume is deliberate. The play between the hand and the crown operates only in one direction - implying to me that the hand is sprung against one side of the play range. This means that in one setting direction the hand will move back away from the set position after you release, and in the other direction not at all. Maybe I give Rolex too much credit here, but I’ve always assumed that this is a feature.
Thanks for watching Angus. Perhaps you're right, maybe this is by design. I couldn't say for sure, but I have the same "issue" on my Rolex Submariner as well. I find it makes setting these watches perfectly a little finicky, but it's not the end of the world.
Something looks slightly "off" on the newer 39mm version when compared to the 36. I know it has thicker lugs like the submariner now but there may be more to it than that. The 36mm version seems to have the perfect proportions and dimensions. But still a great looking watch and an OK value on the used market.
Two ways it could be improved without changing the aesthetics: Rolex should develop movements with longer power reserves. Secondly use steels with greater scratch resistance.
I agree with 90% of the review but the part about the bracelet and fit was misleading to say the least - for the record there are micro adjustments on the clasp, three exactly so it will fit perfectly!
Rolex explorer with my personal experience is an awesome watch. I got it for its simplicity and versatility and I never regretted buying it. Not sure if u r a nato guy but bracelet is never my thing. I requested my AD to get it removed on the spot when I bought it. I love nato straps and they are like outfits to my watches. Perhaps u could consider it as an alternative if bracelet is bringing u discomfort.
I can't decide between the Explorer I or the Air King for my first Rolex. I still have to save a bit b/f I pull the trigger, so I have time to decide. I'm leaning Air King, but both are marvelous watches.
1) The lack of rotor noise is how it's supposed to be: the rotor is jeweled in Rolexes 2) Yes, that's fine too 3) Also yes, the hands have a little play in them, it's perfectly fine
After owning my Explorer for about 8 months i already have a big scratch on the case and a few on the clasp. After owning my 2003 Omega Seamaster Peter Blake for about two years and owning my 2006 Omega Seamaster James Bond for about 4 months, i added not one noticable scratch on both of them. But still i love the shine of the 904L steel and i love the design of the Explorer. It is the 100% perfect watch design for me.
I don’t understand your logic that it is not a good value. I have a Mark 2 2019 model that I paid retail from my local AD. I know that I could make money if I decided to flip it, which I would never do. I love the watch and am very happy to have it.
I wouldn't worry about the kind of scratches you'll get with this watch. In my opinion the scratches I got are not noticeable, even by me within eye to wrist distance (obviously if I take a look specifically at the scratches, I will see scratches). After 7 years of everyday use, I got it serviced and asked Rolex not to polish it. I don't want my watch to shine like a jewel or reflect sunbeams right in the eye of people across the street. Instead I'd rather be the one to "discretely shine", wearing such a watch definitely helps.
You can call me cheep or fake person but this is why I going to buy high end replica, and wear it every day without worrying if it gets scratches or I break something.
I wear the Expliorer Mk1 mostly all days and if I don't I miss it. I bought it used, what is the best for a daily watch - you don't have the fear to wear it, because it's just worn and you almost loose no money selling it.
You deff make some good points, one thing a lot of people don't realize is the oyster clasp has micro adjustments other than the easy link. So you probably could have gotten that perfect fit had you known. It is on the other side of the clasp across from the easy link. You need a tool to make the adjustment.
I agree about the +/- 2 sec per day rating. My Air King had the same rating of +4 per day while being advertised as +/- 2. The Watchmaker at Wempe told me that it averages +/- 2 in all positions but on a wrist it will not be +/-2. I have a seamaster COSC which was actually just as accurate as my Air King. So I am not sold on that rating Rolex is advertising.
My Submariner is running within the +/- 2 range, but this is the second one as I had to return the first (which wasn't running in spec). So I'm 1 for 3 in having watches that meet the specifications laid out by the manufacturer. I have a whole Submariner review talking about it.
The 36mm Explorer I is awesome - when they went to 39 mm the dial appeared too big - that's why the 40mm sub looks great with the larger bezel and therefore smaller and more proportionate dial.
Nice review. Agreed on the size. Wears too big for me. Because its a fairly thin bezel and the dial/crystal takes up more space making it appear larger. For me, next watch will be the 14270 36mm version. Enjoyed the vid!
No they’re not. This fallacy that “if you want accuracy get a quartz” is so basic. A modern Rolex should be +-2spd and has a 5 year warranty. Omega offers something similar and my Sinn and Christopher Ward bearers are all keeping time in similar specs. You don’t have to be a “stickler about accuracy” to want or expect that if you’re paying £5-6k for a 3 hand watch that advertises its spec as being +-2spd. Most quartz watches will not be particularly accurate in comparison .
This is going to sound weird. But I’ve found the newer Rolex models scratch WAY easier than any of my 5 digit models. I believe the solid bracelets added weight may have something to do with it. But if you look at he forums, others have noticed the same
Great video Some of your criticisms would frustrate me on a $400 seiko...I can't imagine how annoyed I'd be if I paid 7000 for a watch and had some of the issues you had. I don't expect perfection but for Rolex prices it better be damn close.. I still love it, one of my favorite designs but I don't think I could ever justify the purchase knowing the issues you encountered..
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I've been considering this watch for my next acquisition and I find your personal experience very useful.
Not sure if you are aware of it? But there is a 3 position micro adjustment within the clasp! I have a 7,1/4” wrist and this sorted my sizing issues out!
I agree with the 39mm on paper seems perfect but the explorer wears like a 40-41mm, but I still love it as it looks sporty and if it wears small it will be more dressy.
My understanding of Rolex superlative chronometer verify +/- 2 seconds is on movement alone while master chronometer is testing watch accuracy at movement fitted onto case.
Wow.... I must be wearing n loving a totally different Rolex Explorer than you had purchased. After 15 years mine is still perfection and I’d have to think long hard to come up with anything I don’t like about it
This was a great review! And I appreciate the format! I'm a "accuracy does matter", my khaki king is holding strong between 1 and 2 seconds per day average (depending on the position it's stored in, similar to your experience with the explorer). So I completely understand the frustration of it being 4 seconds off daily.
I constantly have trouble adjusting the size of this watch to my wrist. The adjustment device just doesn’t do the trick I also have a Sub, and that is much easier to fine tune. Still, I have adjusted to the watch and notice that the weather definitely affects the fit. I do love the watch so I am keeping it.
I had a zenith El Primero. It was lovely and beautiful and I loved it. Or I thought I did. I loved the idea of owning one, more than loved wearing it. Turned out I loved it because you are supposed to love a Zenith El Primero. Everybody loves the El Primero, but it was not for me. Some watches are so ubiquitous, they are universially liked or loved. I think the Explorer is one such watch. You have to really look hard to find things you hate about the explorer with all the hype around this piece. I think it is a watch which you want to own, because of the name is prestigious. But in reality watches like the Omega Railmaster beats the explorer in every single metric. Just a thought.
@@Mythicregard Timekeeping they are actually tied. Both have a 4 second tolerance. The thickness is darn close, and clasp is iffy, but I can give you the bracelet. The railmaster is a technically better watch. I do think Rolex does have a fantastic bracelet.
Great video, but May 2022, the whole story is totally different. Now you would wish to buy a Rolex watch at retail price straight away if you have a chance. No time to think about loves or hates, I guess. This Explorer is discontinued now, and it certainly cost twice the retail price in the grey market.
I'm watching this way late (bookmarked when I was doing research on buying an Explorer) but wanted to point out that there are micro adjusts in the clasp.
Should have got the 36mm. Classic size and perfectly balanced. Sits perfect on the wrist and is really comfortable. The 39mm looks like a big, fat Explorer.
I don't really like buying expensive vintage or pre-owned watches, generally. I think I would have prefered the 36mm version but without a really trusted seller and a full service history I wouldn't even consider looking at a watch over $2000 on the pre-owned market.
Nice video. I am sorry to hear your grail did not turn out as you hoped for. But maybe there is another high-end brand that will better suit you for that top watch to keep forever. For me it was the Datejust and I love it. My only issue was deciding on the SS vs TT which the gap in price was a substantial 3k. Growing up, I was always ok with the idea of SS because my dad had one and it had a nice champagne dial. The issue in the current models is ref. 116234 only has blk, wht, blu and slvr. And some photos make silver look like champagne but in person it is not, which takes away from having that bit of flair. This made me desire TT a bit more but I cant swing that no time soon so I got the silver dial. I love it but there exist that small itch.
I almost bought a nice 16233 2 tone datejust with white dial. It was pre owned but mint with recently service. I missed it because I hesitated and someone else bought it the next day. Bummed me out.
I need a steel bracelet (frequently in water or sweaty) but had the same problem as you getting one to fit. You should check Ginault. Super easy micro adjustments.
I enjoyed the review. It gives me something to think about. The Explorer is one of my current favorites but your review has made me think about it. The things you don't like are also things I wouldn't like either.
I've since gotten a Submariner and sold the Explorer and I'm much happier with the Sub. If money were no object I'd still like to have the Explorer, but I can't justify having such an expensive watch that I wouldn't feel compelled to wear regularly. It would end up being an something I put on occasionally and I have plenty of inexpensive watches for that.
AGREE WITH YOU 100 % ... I am Lucky, I grew up in New York City where Everyone & his Mother has a Rolex (yes, all Fakes) so very early in life the Brand Lost its appeal for me & I've NEVER been interested in this Overpriced Luxury Brand, it absolutely Says Nothing To Me ... Overpriced to the Max for what you get, especially when I compare it's overall Value to my Breitling Superocean Chrono which on my large 7.5 inch wrist fits me perfect (got it Mint for $2,000 with papers, box, extra links, plastic bezel protective cover, etc., like New) ... Been collecting for a year & over Rolex I personally prefer the Not Popular Brand Maurice Lacroix, especially their 38mm Triple Calendar Moonphase & their Chrono Flyback at very reasonable prices for a Luxury Brand. Great Vid & New Subscriber. Thanks, Major Jim, US Marines
I hear you man. Thought I would love it. It seemed to check all the boxes for me on paper. But it didn't completely resonate with me. Problem is, I was between this and the Sub 114060 and the entire time I had it, I asked myself 'what if'? In the end, 'what if' won out and I got the 114060.
George Yang I was in the same boat. I have a smaller wrist (6.5in) and the 114060 actually got better on me. If Rolex goes back to 36mm I’ll pick one up this year. Otherwise, I’ll find an older 36mm version.
Thank you! I think you just saved me a ton of money. I have a submariner that's problematic and thought about selling it. Not interested in another watch that's not a "superlative chronometer ". My Omegas are so reliable, looks I might be getting another one
Nice balanced review. Happily for me, most of your hates are either loves for me, or easily remedied. Size - I was slightly put off by the 39mm, as I prefer a 40-42, but since you say it wears bigger, that is a plus. Easily scratched? I call that character. :) And the bracelet? I'll likely be swapping that out for rubber, leather, and NATO immediately anyway. Now I can't wait to pick one up!
Regarding finding the perfect fit with the the Easylink clasp: were you aware that the EasyLink has 3 settings using the small Spring bar inside? When I discovered this, I was able to find the perfect size by removing one link and extending to the furthest spring bar position of the EasyLink.
Yeah I am aware of the 3 microadjust points inside the clasp. I could never find a comfortable position that allowed the bracelet to fit my wrist and keep the clasp centered nicely on the wrist. Perhaps I needed to order a half link, which I did do for my Submariner.
As usual *good review, down to earth speaking the honest facts.* The gloss is highest possible on stainless steel unlike the Grand Seiko SBGA387 they claim is made with special polishing techniques.. blah blah blah.. mentioning Spring Drive, those Grand Seikos are much more accurate in time, and some are nicer than Rolexes. Someone said in a comment here *"Sometimes wanting something is more fun than owning it."*
It's the proportions of the 39mm that I don't enjoy.... specifically the thickness of the bezel. The width of the bezel on the 36mm is proportionally far slimmer in comparison and looks far more balanced.
Totally agree with you on the movement I had the same problem with mine not as great as I thought would be but love the look of it very simple and classy
Hello, i completely understand why you disliked your explorer. I think you were wrong to get the latest version. the previous reference would have been perfect for you. The 14270.
Sometimes wanting something is more fun than owning it.
There's a lot of truth to this statement.
Oh so true
submariner master race
Agreed
Shad Kerr Always....
I didnt know there were three micro adjustments. I thought there was only the 5mm quick link adjustment
@@JustBlueFish utter crap if you cannot fit this just give up watches
@@twotubefamily9323 nice grammar. Maybe you should give up English.

Vegas! Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it. Enjoy that Explorer, it is a great watch.
ONE of the most beautiful watches ever made.
You have destroyed my dream about owning such a gorgeous watch and thereby saved me a ton of money!
Thank you very, very much!!! The things you mentioned about the size, the scratches and accuracy are the kind of things that would irritate me too at this price.
jorgen315 😂😂😂
Try it on before discounting it... lots of others love it...
Exaactly, I thinking the exact same thing. They're pretty, It's not a secret they don't keep reliable time.
scorpianbliz I have one an it’s +2 seconds a day like clockwork 🤞
@@seang2822 and still my 2 Seamasters run better than my submariner. It's tough because a part of me covets this watch. But my next watch may be a pre-owned planet ocean gmt
We all like perfection. Seems like this Explorer watch is so perfect it's incompatible with the human wrist.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it!
The expensive SUV you never drive off-road, I like that. Nice analogy.
hervé Chretien I wear my 2016 explorer while hiking, track driving and on the beach. No issues. Rugged and very durable. I love this Rolex. On my wrist, 39 mm looks at home. Problem with the 36 mm is the bracelet quality.
q
The OP Explorer and OP 39mm can take up a beating if the wearer wish.
I wear my 36mm 114270 every day, all day. It's got a few scratches true, but that's life. I have no intention of ever selling it, all those hairline nicks and scratches just remind me of all the great times I've enjoyed with it on my wrist. 😁😁😁
Good points all. I still want one.
I don't blame you at all.
Which one you own the one with 114270 or 214270 reference
dlw3m OP was on Everest expedition.
Incorrect! 904L steel has a 70 to 90 on the Rockwell hardness scale while 316L has 95. Just letting you know. :)
I've never known of watches with 316L steel corroding unless they had some pretty extreme conditions
Smaller......are you soft in the head...
Really sorry to hear you had such a negative experience with your Explorer. I picked up mine a little after you and have been in love ever since.
A few comments:
Based upon the timing variance and emerging rotor noise you described, I strongly suspect you had a defective movement on your hands.
Hey man I am new to this but how do you realize how many seconds fast or slow your watch is per day? Like how do you measure it
@@fahimmosharrof7209 You can get the most accurate (aside from taking into a watch shop of Rolex dealer) by using an app on your smart phone.
HarryUnchained Exactly!
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Glad you’re happy with your Submariner. It’s a classic.
I dont think Rolex uses 14k on their watches.
“Sometimes wanting something is more fun than owning it”. So true with Rolex. I’ve owned at least five. I could never get the right fit. They just don’t offer enough adjustments to the bracelet, yet Rolex doesn’t seem to care…
I’ve switched to IWC Aquatimer 3548 and an IWC XVI Spitfire and never looked back. Love my IWC’s, plus they’re not flashy out in public.
A shame it did not work out for you. I think this is the most appealing watch from Rolex and could be just the watch to have... actually after having seen two of your videos regarding this watch, I think I should go to a dealer and take a closer look at it. I must see it on my wrist...
the 114270 is the forever watch.
It probably is. I reviewed the 14270 and thought it was great, but if I was buying one I’d go for the 114270.
Mine fits perfect, it’s the best watch I ever had.
Thanks for watching, enjoy that Explorer!
Can't beat the older models IMO. Absolute classics, and much more comfortable. All those nice little things you mention are just Rolex. They are all this way.
Thanks for watching. I have considered looking for an older 36mm model. I may someday.
If your watch movement was more than +/- 2 seconds you can bring it in for warranty in new watches within the 5 year warranty.

My Regent F129 and also my Regent F654 they do look like this Rolex but both gain just 1 second every week.
I have owned my 1988 Rolex explorer 1016 since January 89 and it has been worn every day apart from 6 week service in 2004,it gains approx 6 seconds per day but after 33 years I can live with that
Beautiful. 1016 is cool
Thank you so much for your honesty. There's a lot that goes into finding one's right fit with anything. At the end of the day we have to be true to ourselves. I'm going through a similar watch dilemma albeit at a much lower price point. Your story is valuable to all in the watch community.
rolex might not be great value, but the value *retention* is excellent
the accuracy issue was a legitimate reason to get it serviced under warranty.
Great review and I hope you've realized by now that there are three micro-adjustment holes in the clasp and found your perfect fit.
Rocking my Explorer 1 since 1997... great understated watch. Works for me.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
A little to nitpicky for me. Pretty much disagreed with your negatives except AR coating.
Thanks for watching.
roy roy No offense but do you own an Explorer?
Thanks for watching.
Totally! :)
904L is softer, so much fairy-dust and hypnotism around Rolex's marketing, and that's a biggy!
It's a scratch magnet.
Yes, and 904L can have up to 25% nickel where 316L has a maximum of only 8% nickel.
The clicking you're hearing when winding backwards should be he Breguet teeth on the winding pinion.
I have one as well and it does look too big indeed . I did switch to leather strap : it looks great , and smaller !
I tried mine on a Nato and I didn't love it, but I could see it working on leather nicely.
Something looks slightly "off" on the newer 39mm version when compared to the 36. I know it has thicker lugs like the submariner now but there may be more to it than that. The 36mm version seems to have the perfect proportions and dimensions. But still a great looking watch and an OK value on the used market.
I thought the 39mm was the perfect size at first. In hindsight I agree it's just slightly off.

Go for Tudor Black Bay 36mm then! IMO, (dimension-wise). That’s what Explorer 1 should have strived to become...
Two ways it could be improved without changing the aesthetics: Rolex should develop movements with longer power reserves. Secondly use steels with greater scratch resistance.
One of the best all around watches in the Rolex line up.
I agree with 90% of the review but the part about the bracelet and fit was misleading to say the least - for the record there are micro adjustments on the clasp, three exactly so it will fit perfectly!
Yes I heard that I should move the button first anti clockwise then continue normally clockwise in order to release the mechanism smoothly..
Get Explorer, which is more superior than new air king in many aspects.
1) The lack of rotor noise is how it's supposed to be: the rotor is jeweled in Rolexes
2) Yes, that's fine too
3) Also yes, the hands have a little play in them, it's perfectly fine
After owning my Explorer for about 8 months i already have a big scratch on the case and a few on the clasp.
After owning my 2003 Omega Seamaster Peter Blake for about two years and owning my 2006 Omega Seamaster James Bond for about 4 months, i added not one noticable scratch on both of them.
But still i love the shine of the 904L steel and i love the design of the Explorer.
It is the 100% perfect watch design for me.
Yeah Rolex watches seem to attract and show scratches more than any other watch I've owned.
The large bezel and sides are super high polished. Look for all brushed watches to hide scratches.
I feel I should first buy a Smiths Everest and then if I enjoy wearing it for a year, then I should get an Explorer.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
You're a hard man to please, but thanks for a great review. I'm still going to buy one.
Thanks for watching James.
You deff make some good points, one thing a lot of people don't realize is the oyster clasp has micro adjustments other than the easy link. So you probably could have gotten that perfect fit had you known. It is on the other side of the clasp across from the easy link. You need a tool to make the adjustment.
I'm aware of the micro adjust, it didn't help.
I haven't seen the 36mm Explorer in person but I suspect I'd like it better than the 39. It's beautiful but the proportions aren't quite right.
Nice review. Agreed on the size. Wears too big for me. Because its a fairly thin bezel and the dial/crystal takes up more space making it appear larger. For me, next watch will be the 14270 36mm version. Enjoyed the vid!
Thanks Evan. I have a video on the 14270 as well. Check that out.
if youre such a stickler about accuracy, then shouldnt you get a quartz? automatics are inherently inaccurate.
That's a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion.
At least a Spring Drive GS if you want to stick with luxury watches.
But if you look at he forums, others have noticed the same
The 904L steel either is easier to scratch or just shows it more, I'm not sure which. But it's an issue that will bother a lot of people.
Great video
Some of your criticisms would frustrate me on a $400 seiko...I can't imagine how annoyed I'd be if I paid 7000 for a watch and had some of the issues you had.
I don't expect perfection but for Rolex prices it better be damn close..
I still love it, one of my favorite designs but I don't think I could ever justify the purchase knowing the issues you encountered..
Thank you! My $400 Seiko Alpinist is not perfect and I don't expect it to be. But at $7000? Come on...!
From all watches i got this one is my dearest. I love it its beutiful. Simple but strong, simple but special, best steel watch to me.
6:35 lol maybe in 2017. Certainly not nowadays.
An amazing and thorough presentation. Rolex has been duly punished for creating the perfect looking watch and then not living up to expectations.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I've been considering this watch for my next acquisition and I find your personal experience very useful.
Thanks for the feedback, I hope you've also checked out my other videos on the Explorer. I've done several.
As someone considering getting a Rolex Explorer, I thought this was an excellent video, highlighting some great points. Cheers!
Thanks I appreciate it. Good luck with your Explorer.
Mo one should were a bracelet above the bone my friend. It's a bracelet...people were bracelets loose you know...🤔
Wow.... I must be wearing n loving a totally different Rolex Explorer than you had purchased.
After 15 years mine is still perfection and I’d have to think long hard to come up with anything I don’t like about it
15 years? I assume you have the older 36mm version than? I like that one, feel free to refer to my review of that watch.
I’m considering buying one , I have to get my first rollieee
Good luck.
This was a great review! And I appreciate the format! I'm a "accuracy does matter", my khaki king is holding strong between 1 and 2 seconds per day average (depending on the position it's stored in, similar to your experience with the explorer). So I completely understand the frustration of it being 4 seconds off daily.
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.
I constantly have trouble adjusting the size of this watch to my wrist. The adjustment device just doesn’t do the trick I also have a Sub, and that is much easier to fine tune. Still, I have adjusted to the watch and notice that the weather definitely affects the fit. I do love the watch so I am keeping it.
maybe should of went back to the AD to adjust the bracelet to your liking? i did on my SD43 and fits perfect and so comfortable.
Not a bad idea.
The Explorer beats the Railmaster in thickness, bracelet, clasp, value retention and timekeeping.
@@Mythicregard Timekeeping they are actually tied. Both have a 4 second tolerance. The thickness is darn close, and clasp is iffy, but I can give you the bracelet. The railmaster is a technically better watch. I do think Rolex does have a fantastic bracelet.
Great review, specially for the honest reasons of personal search and introspection analyzing what you want and why.
Thanks for the feedback. If you want a deeper look check out my full Explorer review.
Great video, but May 2022, the whole story is totally different. Now you would wish to buy a Rolex watch at retail price straight away if you have a chance. No time to think about loves or hates, I guess. This Explorer is discontinued now, and it certainly cost twice the retail price in the grey market.
Great review and commentary.
Heard of the brand but no experience with them. Good quality?
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.
Watch trend as of 2018 is going back smaller.
I hope so.
Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed the video.

Are the hands and indices are made of steel or white gold
White Gold.
Honest real user review. thanks!
Thanks for watching buddy.
To me the 114270 is soooo much nicer looking and wearing
theoneandonlybosable yes. But the bracelet is the only down side. Its horribly cheap feeling shit. Thats the only reason i switched back to the 39mm
The 39mm is just perfect size, prefer the mk1 though, the white gold numbers are superb
One of the nicest looking watches ever, but it wasn't without some disappointments.
Hello, i completely understand why you disliked your explorer. I think you were wrong to get the latest version. the previous reference would have been perfect for you. The 14270.
I love this watch
Would you perhaps consider a Black Bay 36? Size and spirit of the older explorers with modern build quality and far more affordable pricing
It's a nice looking watch, but I've never seen them in person so it's hard to say for sure. It's a consideration though.
