can't go wrong with either references but as a wearer of the ceramic GMT I actually opted for the older 114270, I like how the watch "disappears" on the wrist and actually don't mind the bracelet at all for everyday wear.
I don’t like rolex very much but i credit the 36 explorer for teaching a whole new generation of watch owners that 36mm is a perfectly normal and good size 😂 Thankfully 36 and 38 are coming back.
@@JMNTN your right....my week day wear is about 35mm and I think its great. Very comfortable..I mean you dont want something getting stuck on your cuff and banging into things because of the size....
Unbelievable that Rolex has missunderstood why the Rolex Explorer 36mm was so popular - 'the look' and balance of the dimensions, 36mm diameter with 20mm lug width, very little tapering, ideally none. All they needed to do was update the movement, add lume to the 3-6-9 and a solid bracelet with it's glidelock clasp. That would have been the perfect update.
Exactly. I will say- the AR coating on the new 36 is better and the dial has a lacquer finish which I prefer so in terms of that the dial is better on the new ones but other than that, everything you said is spot on. Hoping we get that “perfect” 36mm soon!!
Nice review. I've owned both the 114270 and the 124270 and agree with your comments. I prefer the 114270 due to it being more comfortable on the wrist and I also prefer the dial proportions. I love the 114270 and it is the watch that finally stopped a cycle of flipping for me! Mine doesn't have the issue that yours has with the hands moving when you're setting the time. Perhaps that's something that could be fixed with a service? Also, I know what you mean when you describe the movement as being the most basic that Rolex offered at the time but that could sound as a negative to someone who doesn't know their history. They movement isn't any inferior to any other Rolex movement at the time, it just has fewer complications as they aren't needed (I know you know this, I'm just leaving this comment for anyone who is unsure what you meant).
I will say I wish the new Explorer had 20mm lug width. The only other negative about the new reference is the lug hole location. 19mm straps are easy to find more now than before. But, you need a thin strap because the lug holes are close to the case, and the case has a lip on it for the end-link. You can wear out the strap a little bit. You also need a thin NATO strap if you're into NATO's. Everything else makes up for that. The movement is spot on and a great power reserve time. The new reference has a more refined case/bracelet taper/better clasp, but the old 36mm looks more neo-vintage. I have no issues with the design proportions of the new reference. I will say depending on the shape of the forearm/hand, or wrist size over 7 inches, this could look small. On my 7 inch wrist with my forearm to hand proportions, it's spot on. Not everyone will like how it looks on wrist. It also takes a few days to get use to the size. After wearing 40/42/44 mm watches since the mid 2000's. The classic smaller size takes time to get use to again. After a while you'll start to think. Are watches over 40/42mm necessary? I'm a 70's & 80's kid so small classic size watches are nothing new. Less is more
You may be confusing the 124270 with the 214270 39mm watch in terms of your comment about dial proportions, as i dont believe these have changed on the new 36mm 124270.
@@invictus_They-Them_Nazi_Hunter no, the text is bolder and the numerals and hour markers are larger on the 124270 compared to the 114270. It’s clearer when they’re side by side. YoureTerrific does a great video comparing them.
Great stuff thanks. I happen to prefer the 3, 6, 9 not being luminous and like the versatility for straps on this model as versatility is a key strength for this watch. Also the taper on the new bracelet is a bit weird and dainty for me. So I think I'll go for this modern classic
😂😂😂😂 In some videos they tell me I sound like Christopher Walken, some tell me I'm from Minnesota, but this is a first one where I'm told I'm a computer
Great review as a owner of the new 36mm I agree it's small but I love it. I prefer small low key watches. Even though I have a 7 inch wrist and I own a Speedy and use to own a Panerai. I keep coming back to the small classic size. I wear my Explorer more than I wear my ceramic Sub. It's less noticeable and it doesn't get negative attention. It doesn't give a douchebag vibe either (not that all Rolex owners are douchebags, a good number are though). Unlike the Submariner or other professional models it goes unnoticed even up close. I will say the measurements are all over the place on RUclips and on forums. However, if you have access to the 124270 36mm, and have digital calipers. On the new Explorer, the bezel overhangs slightly over the sides of the Oyster case. Measure at the edges of the bezel (8-2 o'clock) a digital caliper will give you 36mm measurement right on the money.
@Watch Geek - Truly appreciate you sharing this one. You are a much more patient man that I will ever be ... the issues with setting the hands and that sub-par clasp would "irk" me senselessly and I would have immediately sent the watch back for repair and/or replacement. Mostly at the price they sell them! From what I hear from this review, your Rolex "journey" was a good one and that's what counts 🙂👍🏼
Great review. I love my 114270. Inconspicuous. It is clear from the comments that critics are either jealous they cannot afford a watch more expensive than a G-Shock or who want their watch to be noticed. Loud, brash & juvenile people.
Disgree. Lume is not required at the 3,6,9. Why? Obviously one knows they are 3,6,9. Secondly numerals are difficult to relume, batons are not. Polished bezel is great as it makes this watch universal. If you want a tool watch buy a Marathon GPQ.
Any other watch than Rolex would have been bashed for that stamped clasp and the minute hand issue. Somehow, when it comes to Rolex, anything that we don’t like in other brands just adds character. Disappointing…
When you love something so dearly you forget all mistakes and things that arnt quite right , but paying retail or grey for a basic watch seems silly I have a over engineering g shock but wont touch a luxery brand as it seem like burning a hole in ur wallet.
I think the Rolex explorer is the best everyday day watch , looks nice , works well and has a classic look , I have a white gold date just as well but that i use for office meetings, since it’s white gold and fluted bezel looks great with a suit .
Nice review of a legacy piece. I tried on the new 36mm version at the AD and the watch is fully solid. A premium Oyster bracelet with a solid milled clasp. The new movement has no jumping minute hand issue. In my opinion, the new Rolex models are the ones which anyone should go for.
its hard to justify the cost of rolex these days as op36 4 years ago only cost 5.2k tax included. the new 'improved' movement and price retention is the only reason i would even consider buying the new one.
Measure the bezel edge 8-2 o'clock with digital calipers. You will get the 36mm spot on. Why does Rolex market watches at ___ size when it's really ___ size? Even the "41" OP is smaller than they say. Yet the old super case Sub is really close to 41. Yet the new reference is 40.5mm. Or the 39mm Explorer more like a true 41mm size.
Beautiful video that really honours this watch. It's definitely one of my favourites and hope to be able to afford a real one one day. The Steinhart 39 version is also great, maybe they will make a 36 mm version as well.
Also want to add that with this Rolex, the simplicity is its beauty. Every detail to the smallest one has been done exactly right, which is just perfection.
The way to go is the 11370 (don't remember exactly the code), no metal numbers, only lumix, no brand name around the face, with an artesanal touch yet.
Not being able to set the time properly seems a major flaw to me especially for a COSC watch that costs a kidney. Please bring back the usual channel sound track 🙂
