  • Turkey’s failed coup happened almost a year ago yet the country remains in chaos. The division is deep between supporters and opponents of President Erdogan.
Overflowing prisons, media restrictions, war-like conditions in Turkey’s Kurdish south-east - a society marked by hatred and fear. Since the failed coup of July 15th, 2016, many parts of Turkish society have been in crisis. President Erdogan has pointed the finger of blame firmly at followers of the US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen. But is it all just a pretext to crack down on dissent?
Turkish society is deeply divided between the opponents and the supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, between the winners and the losers. Since the attempted coup of July 15th, 2016, hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs, had their property confiscated, ended up in prison or fled abroad. And it’s not just suspected members of the Gülen movement that are being targeted, but also many other government opponents: Kurds, liberal and left-wing politicians, journalists, writers. While Erdogan called the putsch attempt a "gift from Allah”, for many others it has spelled personal disaster. The president has declared the day of the thwarted coup a national holiday. Many observers see that as an attempt to create a founding myth of a "New Turkey”. In this latest documentary, DW delves beneath the surface of Turkish society to find a deeply polarized nation, where mistrust and fear are the only common denominator. We accompany people from both sides of the divide to get their perspective on the situation.

A lot of things are biased against the Turkish government. Even today the USA, and western europian counties especially Germany are engaged in negative propaganda against Turkey. I salute the bravery of the Turkish nation which they showed that night.

The west has to deal with whatever governments rule over the middle east. Instead of blaming the west for all of your problems why not take a good look at the values of your civilization and its political culture. Is there a tradition of human rights in the history of Islamic governance? Is there a tradition of free speech? Is tolerance for pluralism a core value? Fix your own political culture and your civilization might function better. You don't have to be Western, you could still be Middle eastern - just more functional. It's very easy to sit there stewing in your conspiracy theories about how the world works - your children will inherit the stew.

All mega projects were and are built by private company groups. They are given the right to run them for example ten years or sometimes more and then state takes over them .lt's called ''Build-Run-Takeover
Canal lstanbul is a super mega project..you can find videos about it in you tube..And lstanbul Airport 3 will be the biggest in the world,it will be finished and take action in 2018 March..
Also all projects are under guarantee of the state..I mean if one project fails or gets late state will complete it. No something like this so far though..You should also sea ''city hospitals mega project'' , contains a chain of mega hospitals allover Turkey..

"they support dictators like Sisi in Egypt and despot kings in gulf countries and even islamofascist mollahs in lran"
Who are"they"? The countries you refer to are governed according to the Qur'an, said to be revealed by Allah through an angel. Hardly likely but I agree not democratic. Personally I know little of Turkey but it seems to me viewing it from a distance that Erdogan is authoritarian AND IS TAKING HIS COUNTRY IN THE WRONG DIRECTION though OF COURSE not as much as Saudi Arabia and the other Islamic states. I doubt that the USA would meet the criteria needed for democracy CONSIDERED by any educated liberal-minded westerner. I consider Canada, AUSTRALIA, BRITAIN and several of the Northern and Western countries of Europe to be true democracies and it seems those people fleeing the Middle East to those countries would agree with me. However I cherish complete freedom of religion and freedom to choose democratically the laws which govern a people and not any religious book such as the Bible or the Qur'an. I agree that a government should be chosen by the people according to the fashions of the time. A constitution should be a living breathing thing and should encompass freedom of expression the rule of law and a free press. We may not be too far apart in our opinions though I believe, as I said, Erdogan may be taking his country in the wrong direction. Please note people are NOT fleeing TO Islamic states but FROM Islamic states. Why do you think is so? There are lots of Turks in Europe. Many people who flee other states go to Turkey but do not stay and take the dangerous voyage to Greece and Italy anxious to proceed further become Europeans for some reason. I watch this with horror. We all do. Maybe you too.

I was fortunate to live in Turkey (Izmir & Antalya) from 97 until 2003 which was quite a liberal period. The economy was shaky and there was high inflation. The Turkish people seem to have accepted creeping authoritarianism for better infrastructure, health, and schools. Politics is largely impacted by demographics and the secular voter base is being overturned by a growing rural population from outside the cities who are generally more conservative, religious, and who would like good schools, hospitals, and roads. Erdogan is gradually sidelining the national hero, Ataturk who I'm quite certain would have been horrified with this current government.

Maybe it’s really that the Muslim majority of Turkey was long oppressed by a secular cosmopolitan minority who hated their countrymen. The law banning women from wearing headscarves in colleges (which would be illegal in under the civil rights act in the United States) was just one example of such. What happened is the cosmopolitan left in Turkey kept oppressing the majority and finally the majority found a fighter who was willing to take on the military

I am surprised to see people glorify leaders who incarcerate people for having different standpoint. constitution and civil rights are not respected and the real terror comes from the government and the military and police suppressing freedom and freedom of tought and speech. government by representation is more fair. If people lose hope and take on weapons to fight for their rights and economic well being this is totally acceptable. Erdogan, his family and members off the parliament fled in the nick
of time, then called out the silly peasant to face the tanks, IF the
majority of the army and the security forces were against the coup
then where were they, why weren't they there, also if the coup was
allowed, it would have fizzled eventually and all those lost lives would
have been saved, saving the FATHERLAND LOL

Ayla Kasarci what a nice lady ,with so civilised beliefs (8m 30s) ! She wants all those accused of treason and for helping the failed coup, to face the death penalty ,using the biblical way ,stone them to death....and why not ,without all those accusants ,mrs Ayla will keep her new job for ever and her new status ,as a civil servant of the ministry of economic affairs ....It is a catchy job and has a lot prestige ,so why bother with others ,that are not having fair trials and that in some cases may be innocent and some of the events may be circumstantial or even prefabricated !!!!

    I'm an Indian.
Exactly the same authoritarianism prevailed in India during Indira Gandhi's State of Emergency during 1975-1977 during which Indian democracy was at stake. But , after 1977 , everything was okay.
It'll be the same in Turkey. Turkey will regain its democracy after the withdrawal of this state of Emergency .
So , cheer up and prepare for the 2019 Presidential Elections. CHP must win and AKP and Erdoğan must go now .

The only thing i understand from this video is that there are many Christian countries in the world, there is a zionist country (cancer of the world) israel, there are buddhist countries, and no one has a problem.
Only when someone tries to establish an islamic country, then the world and the political opposition goes crazy like a prostitute in sexual heat. Because it hinders their plans, secularism is only talked about in those countries where government tries to be islamic. But for other religious countries, they don’t need secularism. Hypocrites.
Every country has its own problems, and their people are not always happy with the government, it’s only natural. So stop speaking as if only turkey has problems and other countries are heavens.
