Even after eight years this video still helps guide people through the Toyota slipping out of 5th gear fix. Mine was on a 02 Camry with 234K miles. The transmissions are basically the same though access requires removal of the rear transmission mount and I also removed the air filter box to access the top three transmission cover bolts. As with others, I purchased parts from the UAE via EBAY at about $250 shipped and they were all genuine Toyota parts. As a precaution I replaced what is called the 5th gear transmission clutch hub, about which the video suggested it wasn’t needed then later said it was. I could find no indication of wear on the original that would have persuaded me of the need to replace it, but I’m hoping to never have to do this job again, so I ordered it and did the replacement. My thanks for the original video and helpful comments made by others.
Thank you for posting this video! I have a 2000 Rav4 with 266,500 miles and my 5th gear went out and your video helped me fix it myself. I ordered the parts from Metro Toyota in Kalamazoo, MI and saved more than $100 from what my local dealer wanted. And, yes, they also wanted between $2-3K to do the work themselves. The parts numbers are: 5th gear - 33336-42040, trans sleeve 33395-42012, trans clutch hub 33393-42010 and needle bearings 90364-28023. That is all that is required and cost me about $260.
This particular vehicle is mine and it's still driving super fine.i havent got any problems with shifting since i ownef it for the past 5yrs..i should say this rav4 will survived the apocalypse..great job here AL!
Thank you for this!! I was about to pull the transmission and buy a rebuild kit, the transmission is flawless aside from 5th popping out. This is amazing info and again thank you!!!
Hey dude, thank you so much for this. I just did my 2004 Corolla Verso which is a very similar layout, I ordered the parts on eBay from United Arab Emirates and including import duty cost me app £180. Certainly way cheaper than taking in to a garage.. :)
I would like to thank you greatly for your video; I had the same pb with the 5th gear on a corolla verso 2005, and I just came back from the test ride; it works fantastically. p.s: I paid 505euros for the parts from Toyota dealership in France.
My synchronizer cage assembly came apart when I took it apart, so I came here to see how to assemble it properly. Apparently, that's a top secret process, so it wasn't included here. Good job with using terrible lighting and making sure that it was all out of focus so nobody could really see into the secret sauce.
Hi- I'm confused- is the hub/cage needed or not? In one part you say it was a waste of a part/time, but at the end I think you said you were wrong you do need it- none of the "kits" include it- thanks in advance for clarifying and thanks for this very helpful video.
Here is what the local Toyota dealer quoted me. These part #s are for a 2003 with the 39 tooth 5th gear. Good Morning Jack, all those parts are available. 33395-42012 $174.40 90364-28023 $54.30 33393-42010 $188.40 33336-42030 $311.30 Everything is in Vancouver except for the 5th Gear which would have to come from California.
Just followed this procedure on a 2003 RAV4. With the exception of a different part number for the gear itself, everything was spot-on! 2003 5th gear is part no. 3333642030. I owe you a beverage of your choice, fine sir! I greatly appreciate your spirit of sharing. From your accent, you seem to be from a prairie province? I'm in BC. Probably used the same Princess Auto puller you did :-) Once again, very much appreciate the effort you put into this video.
I have a JDM trans to put in due to my old one popping out of 5th gear...Now I know how to replace 5th gear syncros if the problem occurs in the future...Wish I found your video before I got this trans but great video 🤘
This video saved my ass. The parts cost me $275 from a Toyota dealer online. I showed the video to my mechanic , and he charged me $150.00 for 2 hours , but he told me it took a little more than 1 hour. Also, use part# 00295-01281 for the Toyota sealant.
What about 4th gear my celica keeps poping out i replaced my frobt a rear mounts thy wherein very bad condition so after that i went to test out my car and it still pops out of gear i notice i have a bad cable links could that be the problem
I decided to replace my fifth-gear sleeve, bearing, synchronizer, and hub for my 1996 RAV4 MANUAL by following multiple videos along with this post very closely 5th Gear Popping out Self-Repair. I finished just about everything except when trying to press the new hub with the old, the 12mm 1.5 thread pitch 55mm bolt (with a washer) is extremely hard to tighten and it seems to be creating a new thread on the bolt which is wider. I don't really know what to do at this point, I'm trying to see if I can find a gear pusher tool in the auto parts stores around my area. Can anyone help me out?
thanks alot dear. I have a geely emgrand x7 car with the same problem. is it possible to fix it by same method? I noticed she is most compatible with rav4.
Great job dude can I ask you a question I have the same problem but in Toyota avensis 2005 are they the same parts I would need Could you answer please
Hey I am curious about those few black O-rings that are visible at 2:34 (a bit fuzzy, but...) just after you pull the synchronizer piece off. Did you replace any of the little things like O-rings, seals, clips, etc? And, now, after the fact, if you didn't, can you tell? Do you know their sizes? Could probably get them at Lowe's or the like? Or Toyota? I've got the parts on order now so wanna get everything together. THANKS SO MUCH for the GREAT instructional...Even Toyota "experts" don't seem to know you can just change the gear out.
What do you need to do when first gear doesn't seem to be synchronized, and grinds when you try to engage it without stopping completely? Is that whole synchronizer cage for all the gears, or just for 5th gear?
Questions and comments.. Any info on where I can find the model of manual transmission for my 1992 Camry, 4 cyl. Is it an E(xx), C(xx) model or what? My shift lever was rocking back and forth with torque until one day it finally popped out and wouldn't stay in unless I would be under light load and going downhill. Question is.. is the rocking caused by excess play in the bearings for the shaft that the bigger gear is pressed on to? If so, then the case would have to be split deeper and those bearings replaced/shimmed, I think. Comment.. I believe there is a video where someone put in different ratio 5th gears on a Celica and got their RPM to drop considerably. I can no longer find that video. Question is.. are there better 5th gear ratios for the Camry. Question.. will the manual transmission on a V-6 fit a 4 cyl Camry... axles??, shift levers, etc.. Reason I ask is if it will, the transmission may have a better final drive ratio.. even though the engine may be a bit doggy on a hill... I'm looking for very low rpm/high fuel mileage on level ground.
Hi, in others chats inform that the problem come back again after 10.000 km. Can you tell us if this problem has been repeated in your case? How many km have you done since the repair?
Tried this on my Avensis, but there is a problem with the syncro hub. I cant get it pressed all the way in, so I cant get that snapper in. Any advice? Theres only like 0,5-1mm left pressing and those 4 spots behind the hub are lined and those 2 pinches on front too.
@@andrewbrady91 just took some material off that snap Ring with belt grinder, made it sure to Be "tight" fit. I still have this car and I have driven 150 000 kilometers without issues.
hey was just wondering if 4th can be accessed through the same way. if its just a matter of removing the plate from behind 5. my 5th is completely gone and 4 is popping out
Great video! Needs more with how you drained and how much fluid Etc. It’s easier to be shown than to read it. But looking forward to the same fix for my 04 first time ever doing any tranny shit
You say that you do need the synchro hub. Will you always need it? I found a rav4 5th gear replacement kit but it doesn't seem to have it. Will I definitely need to find the hub?
Hi, am I right in thinking that the parts I need to ask for from Toyota are a replacement 5th gear, needle bearing, sychro housing and selector fork? Thanks
Umm. You probably don't need the No. 3 shift fork. I know the shop manual suggests you may. Unless I'm mistaken, according to Mike's video you do need: 5th gear needle roller bearing (for 5th gear) No.3 Clutch Hub No.3 Hub Sleeve
duglas esquivel my 5th gear pops out on my 2006 5speed manual Scion tC 114k miles but I can still hold it there no problem. Is my 5th gear gone and need to be replaced? I check the transmission fluid and when I unscrewed the filler bolt it started coming out
How she holding up after all this time? I have a 96 rav4 with the exact same problem. Can anyone recommend a mechanic that could perform this job for me in the Austin tx area?
Can you or someone here describe how to hold the spindle and gears from rotating while using the bolt/washer method of pushing the cage back onto the spindle? Thank you.
Mikealan1! I need your help! This just started happening to my 1998 Rav4. I Haven't worked on a vehicle before, but I don't want to pay a ridiculous amount to get this fixed by a dealership. What tools would I need to go with the parts in order to get it done right?
Wow! Thanks. This is one of the most useful vids I've seen on the RAV4. At the beginning of the clip you did mention that you would provide part numbers. It's still not too late to put them in the comments :) I think these are all E250 transmissions between 1997 and 2000. Did you get the parts directly from Toyota or a another source? He, thanks again! I hope you find time and inclination to make more.
This all is pretty vague. I'm in my garage doing this right now and cant get the synchro cage to come off. using the same Harmonic Balancer Puller and method. The shaft spins with the turns so I jigged it to stay still, but its not moving a millimeter. No idea how to get this thing off
Update: The year is 2022 the parts listed in the description are now just over $1000 (Canadian) from Toyota. Anyone have any ideas where I can get them for cheaper? Thanks.
