great video, exactly what my RAV4 is doing at the moment, just had to replace coils and plugs and took it for a test drive and it started to pop out of 5th gear, thought I was up for a new gear box until I watched this, so thanks very much, cheers
My 5th gear decided to start popping out on a roadtrip to Canberra. Now I gotta drive home for 7 hours holding the thing in or slowing traffic in 4th. At least now I know what to do when I get home.
Hi again, can I ask where you got your parts from, when I searched, they were only available from Japan and there were a 39 and a 40 tooth gear set, do you know the difference, cheers
These big gears and the bearing can be used but generaly the matter come from synchro rings (brass parts), sometimes in the cage the synchro steel gear can be broken.
Thank you. I have a problem, which is the gear entering, but it does not continue. Once I press the accelerator pedal, it retracts. I bought all the parts mentioned in the video, but there is one piece, which is CLUTCH HUB Do I need to change it knowing that there is no sound
Not knowing what size the bolt is to press it back on is stopping me from fixing my rav4.still the best video I have seen for this repair on RUclips. Someone should make a tool for pressing the assembly back on.they would sell a bunch!
I saw from another video that its a 12 mm with 1.5 thread pitch. You'll need a washer large enough and stiff enough to span the diameter of the spline shafter. I'm going to try this repair tomorrow - wish me luck!
The bolt size is indeed 12 mm diameter (M12) by 1.5 thread pitch. So far everything has gone well - my transmission fluid refill port was stripping with a 12-point socket, so I had to go out and buy a 6-point 24 mm. Open this one before draining the transmission, because if you drain first and then find out you can't refill, you may have to have the car towed to the shop if you're unable to drill it out yourself. Right now I'm stuck at pressing back on the gear hub / synchro assembly. The pressing tool seemed to be pressing hard and straight, but I've run into two problems: 1) the gears keeping wanting to turn as I screw the pressing tool in, no matter how hard i apply the brakes or jam with a rod, making it squishy. 2) one of the synchro ring clings popped out and is loose from the assembly, so I need to pull it off again to fix the clips. But the presser bolt is stuck and I can't get my presser off to reinstall the puller! So right now the assembly is partially (and incorrectly) installed, and stuck
Great video. Just bought a RAV4 2001 with this problem. Every video I have been watching its seems they use different 33336-42040. I guess the last 2 didgets is the number of cogs. Any way to check what I have without ripping it out and check?
@WatiDoFoo nah they had different variants come out all over the world, and even different between factories, so you can get a 36 on one rav and then a 40 on another but they can be built exact same month and year just in different places
@@Finndawgdamn have a third gear that sometimes crunches and pops out. Going to change fluid to redline mt90 and hope it works its magic in the meantime 😅.
G'day. Difference is the gear teeth which influence the gear ratio and hence your revs at a certain speed. There is reports online of people switching from 39 teeth to 41 to lower the revs
As far as I know they don't actually have a transfer case, well not in the case of the car in this video as it in all time all wheel drive with no ability to change into hi or lo awd
@jacobabdullah6978 yeah they have like a diff that transfers power to the rear and front diff, that would probably be the closest thing these have to a transfer case. I have 4x4s and the way their transfer cases is very different to these
Could you tell me if you've noticed some issues before it started popping off? I've had gear shift knob vibrating at a small range of rpm on 5th gear only, seems like forever. Definately for more than 30-40k km driven (currently at 240k km). Any idea if that's going to fail or if this looks like some other issue?
Hi matey is this a problem on all RAV 4 engines ? I have a VVTi that jumps out of 5th straight away and occasionally out of 4th . Lots of horrible grinding noises too !
Hey boss, thanks for the support! I don't think you can add people on RUclips, though feel free to post any questions you have here and I'll happily answer anything I can help with.

Hello. I have the same problem with my RAV. with your tutorial I hope I can fix the problem myself

Hi again, can I ask where you got your parts from, when I searched, they were only available from Japan and there were a 39 and a 40 tooth gear set, do you know the difference, cheers
I got mine from japan. and yeah, you'll need to know how many teeth yours has before ordering it.
Hi guys, wondering if anyone has found a way to stop it from spinning when using the harmonic puller to remove synchroniser ?
These big gears and the bearing can be used but generaly the matter come from synchro rings (brass parts), sometimes in the cage the synchro steel gear can be broken.
Good job brother thank you
Glad you enjoyed, hope it helped!

I would recommend replacing the hub as well, as it also controls the ability for the gear to engage.
Excellent info, thanks. Now subscribed.
Thanks for watching and subscribing it really helps keep me motivated.
Great video , can you tell me what size bolt you used to press the synchro back on ? Thanks
Sorry I don't know off the top of my head, I went through my bolts bin and managed to find something that fit correctly.

Unfortunately I sold the rav4 a couple weeks ago. I bought a Lexus

I had it checked at Toyota, ones a new number, ones an old number. (Ending in 030 and 040) But parts are the same.
No they're different, he is right the last 2 diets are the amount of teeth on the cog.
My bad, disregard. Misinformation. Im gonna give this a crack on the weekend. Cheers for your vid.
Guy at Toyota reckons the part number was superseded 🤦♂️

Awesome tutorial thanks, do U think it'd be possible to change 2nd and 3rd gear without pulling the trans?
No you'd have to do a full gearbox rebuild at that point.

@iseanuthin7785 sounds like a syncro or shift linkage, might be an easy fix take it to a mechanic. But if it's a syncro not ideal.
Gday mate, just double checking the part number for the gear ending in 040 , theres some kits ending in 030 , do you know if theres a difference?

As far as I know they don't actually have a transfer case, well not in the case of the car in this video as it in all time all wheel drive with no ability to change into hi or lo awd

Yeah it felt like it was ripping backwards under sudden acceleration. Then it eventually started popping out of gear just before it let go
