      Growling Sidewinder once upon a time I was dogfighting a Flanker in my Hornet. I couldn’t get a lock in acm mode and I ran out of ammo with the funnel without a hit! I feel your pain with manual gunsights.. I have enough difficulty with the funnel let alone the F-5’s or a Warbird.

    The gunsight on the 109 is a Revi 16b. The inner ring fits the spitfire wings when your range is 115m. Sychronise your guns for 400 m. When you're at 115m or closer aim a little low(1 or two hackmarks, but not more), give it to him, and walk your g/s pipper up through him.
    Congratulations, it appears you clipped in at about 400m!
    In a 109, never try to match a Spitfire's turn for more than 45 degrees, his forte is horizontal, your's is the verticle.
    Best climb and turn should be in the region of 270 to 290 km/h.
    The above works in IL2 and CloD, if the modelling is as good or better than those sims, those tips should work in DCS as well.
    Another great video, thanks.

    One of my favorites ( IL2 Bf109g6 though) ! You did real good! One of the reasons that you missed is that the guns and cannon ( 2, MG 131 /13mm and 1 , MK 108/30 mm) have different mussel velocities. The MK 108 /30 mm has a greater drop , not like the MG 151 / 20mm which was in par with the 13mm velocity wise. But man you really turned the tables on one of the most maneuverable planes of all time! When I fly my G6 I only Boom and Zoom, that shows your really a pro bro! Love to see you fly the FW190 D 9 next! Thanks bro !

    Never turn fight a Spit boom and zoom. A 109 has a better dive speed, dive and the spit will follow, he will have to back off in the drive so as not to over speed,( a good Spit pilot will not follow you down but level out and gain speed, and wait for you to climb back up) then use that speed to climb up and till you stall and bring it down back on his head, even if you mess it up you will have more speed to climb back up and then Boom and zoom him... with you shooting get closer. With in 100m's

    • @douchebagpatrol7237

      i think the 109s vertical turn is always better than an equivalent spifires vertical turn in flight simulators like il-2 so u can still dogfight the spit just not in the horizontal im guessing this is still the case with other sims

    • @JG10rBull
      @JG10rBull 5 лет назад

      I'm not to sure, ive not got the spit or me109 in DCS, im just speaking in gen from other SIM games ive flown. Eg WT, IL2, but normal A.C. with the 109 is BnZ and energy tactics.. the hammer head or candlier works great in the 109 in all flight Sims and NEVER follow a Spit in a Defensive spiral.. big no no high yo yo all day

    • @Kay_213_
      @Kay_213_ 4 года назад +1

      In war thunder, if you take the spitfire up into a vertical spiral you should be able to just kick the plane over onto the spitfires tail
      If that doesn’t work you can force awkward firing angles and perform a high yo-yo
      Edit: Going straight vertical won’t work though. It’ll make your plane sluggish, the spitfire has more engine power, it’s a recipe for death

    • @sugarnads
      @sugarnads 4 года назад

      Then it aint realistic. Spits would follow a 109 coz the 109 never stayed in a dive long, their tails would come off. You just wait til they start to pull out and boom. Dead. They always pulled out real gentle. Spit could pull back hard as you want.

    Three things I’ve learned about the Bf-109
    1.) Do. Not. Turnfight. Anything. Especially spitfires and anything Japanese
    2.) Never follow a spitfire into a defensive maneuver or spiral
    3.) When in doubt, go back up and try for another shot. 109s have the ability to disengage or break off if they need a better angle

  • @c-aviation3333
    @c-aviation3333 5 лет назад +13

    Great video - as always!
    But I have a problem with Spitfire's tactics right from the beginning till the very end. Going vertical against a Bf 109 with equal energy in the beginning of this fight was kind of suicidal. It almost worked due to your mistake, which you pointed out, but given other options you had (wide climbing spiral for example) you could have both ended merging again a minute later - this time with you at higher speed and with much better options to continue this fight.
    As you said - descending spiral was a correct move for him. And again - I have no idea why he abandoned this plan. It was a good plan. The only viable I'd say. With high wing load of 109, he could have out-turned you after a while (even considering the disadvantageous situation of fighting 109K with IX). He didn't and you had your shot.
    As to the aiming problems you mentioned. I have the same in similar situations. That said - I'm well aware that it is wrong to shoot at this point. With the angular speed he had hitting him was just the matter of probability and odds. In 1 vs 1 situation and in Bf 109K the odds were on your side, but doing the same in a plane with less ammo could be dangerous. A lag pursuit (a little wider spiral) followed by a steeply descending turn (to make radius smaller) could give you a better firing solution.
    But your tactic worked - and that's important :)

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 лет назад

      C-Aviation thanks I like that idea with theag pursuit might give it a go. Never thought of that to get a better fire solution. I was always flying lead.

    • @c-aviation3333
      @c-aviation3333 5 лет назад +1

      Lead pursuit gives you... well basically the lead. It may give you a firing solution, but the angle (and therefore angular speed) will be undesirable.
      Lag, on the other hand, may put you on the outside and allow you to shoot more or less in the same axis as the target. The problem is - it requires a hard turn at one point. And for that you need a more agile plane or a maneuver that will allow you to tighten the turn - that's why I suggest staying a bit higher and then using this energy to get into position.
      Inspired by you I flew this mission against AI Bf 109 in a Spitfire a couple of times. Just as I predicted - going vertical was pointless (and sometimes suicidal). But the descending spiral worked even better than I predicted. The trick was not to give the 109 any chance to use his superior speed or higher energy. So I had to get him to the deck and then I was able to use low-speed turning radius of the Spitfire to get on his six. Fortunately - it was just the AI. Veteran 109 driver would disengage when I was in a spiral and reposition for another attack. And with Spitfires IX lower speed - I wouldn't be able to disengage myself so the fight would be entirely his choice. Quite similar to the situation Germans had on the Eastern front in 1941 and 1942 (and partly later too).

    The only thing - those are late modifications of the spitfire (with late Merlin motor) and bf109 (it has that "high" tail and plumps at its motor covers). Seems like Spitfire MK IX C and BF109 G10. Oh, even K-4. It's the last bf109 modification. So they can not meet in 1941, rather at the end of 1944 or 1945 year. But - this just a details...)

    Question: As you were both in that downward spiral, if the Spit had hard-left turned into the direction of the spiral, might that had brought his plane out of your field of view even more and given him a change momentarily brake the engagement for a new position? I love the TacView part of these videos. It really helps to understand dog fighting. One of my (many) pilot flaws are to pull to tight a turn, and kill my air speed to the point that I am easy pray.

  • @kentwilliams4152
    @kentwilliams4152 4 года назад

    Great video! I think that if he had kept a downward spiral instead of pulling up he might have been better off. A downward defensive spiral was used a lot in “Aces High,” but not much now. If the aggressor chops power, goes vertical and rolls, keeping the defensive aircraft directly over his canopy, whenever the defensive aircraft comes out of the spiral the aggressor can simply drop in on his six.

    I loved to trick my high alt, high E, opponents in Sturmovik by making a large smooth turn holding my speed up and trying to keep em in my 3 or 9 o'clock position. When they start zooming in you keep em in 3 or 9 and do slow climb same time without losing a lot of speed or losing it at all. When they are closer, you pull your turn a bit tighter and nose 30 degree climb while they overshoot you give em small silouette and gain altitude. If they want to turn into you after dive (which is stupid because you lose all your E, and give advantage to me), you just keep your E advantage and let them lose theirs by going after you doing large turn with a climb. Eventually you gain advantage of the fight, you have more E, a bit more speed and alt. You can just make em stall if they that stupid to follow and dive in and finish your prey.
    IF they dont turn on you aften zooming in, you just rinse and repeat until he commits the fight.

    Question: Real spitfires were supposed to have issues on a right hand turn. Apparently the line between stall and flying during the turn was a narrow one and you could easily drop into a spin. Is this modeled in DCS? Does DCS model engine torque on prop planes?

    • @iskandartaib
      @iskandartaib 3 года назад

      Never heard this one about the Spitfire. Are you sure you're not thinking of the Sopwith Camel? The Sopwith Camel definitely had problems with turning in one direction due to gyroscopic precession of its rotary engine. Turn one way, precession would hold the nose up and you could really rack it around quickly. Turn too tightly the other way, the opposite would happen - you'd end up in a spinning dive. I forget which was the "good" side. Note that Me109 and FW190 both had small wings, and were known to have nasty tip-stalling tendencies - in a tight turn one wingtip would stall and if you were at low altitude this could kill you, since the plane would roll onto its back. In mock fights with a captured FW190, the British test pilot flying the 190 avoided tight turns at low altitude for this reason. The Spitfire, on the other hand, had a lot of wing area and had washout at the tips, and was known for NOT dropping a wingtip even in a stall. Among other things, this made them easy to land (although once on the ground the narrow track landing gear made them a handful to control, compared to later fighters with wider gear).

    I don't hear no growling sidewinder though 😊. Height is energy advantage even now in air combat maneuvering, probably what he should have done is rolled 180 and done a reverse vertical loop to get himself out of your forward flight cone. The Bf109F was the best handling 109 even if K was the hotrod, many pilots/aces persisted with it even when the heavier armed and faster G became available.

    If you don't have a subwoofer on your computer, go buy one. You can FEEL the 109's vibrations! Which variants of the 109 and Spitfire here? In the Western Desert the Spitfires would have been Mark Vs (one stage two speed supercharger) vs. Me109 F or G (probably F). Some Mark IXs were in use later (by July 1943 the Allies were already invading Sicily, the Mark IX entered service in late 1942) but the DAF mainly used Mark Vs with Vokes filters attached, which reduced performance somewhat. The one in the video looks like a Mark IX (four bladed prop), which would have been better than the Mark V at high altitudes, with its two stage supercharger.

    Would you say that in this Tacview situation the best the SPIT can do (as your lead view is blocked by your nose) would be to - as tracers go by - reverse the direction , i.e. somehow make an unexpected move, so that he doesn't pop up in front of your nose all the time... If that makes sense?!

    Reading the WWII pilots accounts, the Spit, if flown properly, will win the turning fight.One of the best tactics against the 109 was a climbing spiral on the buffet if the 109 was behind. As the Spit has a lower wing loading, and the wing was designed to maintain its energy in the turn, the 109 with its high wing loading and leading edge slats will beed its energy and once the slats deploy that's it, it will drop out of the sky. The Spit should then be able to drop in behind and finish the job... all things being equal of course.

    Never fight in the horizontal against a Spit when you're in a 109. If the Spit is closing in on your 6 you might try a chandelle to cause him to bleed more energy and to mess up his aim. A speed of about 270 kph is good for climbing to maximize the rate at which you're gaining energy. Try not to exceed about 350 kph in a dive, as 109s are notorious for their control surfaces stiffening up at high dive speeds. The German ace Erich Hartmann would basically wait until the enemy's plane filled his cockpit's view before firing. Hans-Joachim Marseille, who flew BF 109 F-4s in the Afrika Corps, was phenomenally good at deflection shooting.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder

      i dont think its a problem, its intended that way, the cannon doesnt carry too much ammo, I think your supposed to use the tracers from machine guns to correct ur rounds onto target and then when ur on target give a little burst of cannon to rip him up.

    I stumbled onto this video, and have a question. I haven't played air combat games in almost 2 decades. I do have a great knowledge of military history. At 6:36, the Spitfire pilot has to choose how to shake off the 109. My question is; doesn't the Spitfire pilot have the option of just pulling into a tight turn and staying in it? I always understood that the Spitfire could outturn any aircraft except the model 21 Zero and the F6F Hellcat. Some of the posters here are undoubtedly real pilots, and I am not, so any information would be appreciated. Be as detailed as you like. I know enough about flight to be able to follow. Thank you in advance...

    Bf109 is small, fast in a dive, very stable, meaning parallel center mounted gun platform. The 20mm was mounted through the inverted V12 crankshaft and out the center of the air screw, with the machine guns on top of the engine and through the "lawn mower blades", for stability. So it aims well compared to a cross fire, wing mounted, 8 x .30cal machine guns like the Hurricane, or .50cals of most allied fighters. It performs outstanding at altitude, but gets chopped to pieces down low, or in a turning fight. So never get into a turning fight especially with a Spitfire or Hurricane, since those large elliptical wings will out turn your high wing loading small Bf 109 wings. Be ware of the wing leading edge flaps, that drop down during positive G maneuvers, that can and will at first throw off your aim, but you really should try to avoid maneuvers that create such high angles of attack. Stay up high, pounce or dive on your opponent, slow shallow turns minding not to bleed off your energy, and keep that lawn mover spooled up and cooking. And for God sake lead fire you guns, those single barrel old school cannons especially had a relatively low velocity compared to these modern multy barrel 20 mm cannons. One more thing, all single engine prop job fighters had the tendency to turn one direction better than the other. This is dur to the counter rotation forces created by the engine rpm, and the air screw spinning through the oncoming air. This was particularly extreme in the Bfone 09, and it had the tendency to roll left under power, that was more apparent when throttle was applied, and less when throttle was reduced. Also the aircraft turned more sharply left, than right. This along with the narrow and angled landing gear, that had the benefit of lightened weight due to less sturdy wing structure for landing gear mounting purposes, also caused many new pilots lives. Because the aircraft had the tendency to roll left when throttle was applied suddenly, and once the tail was lifted off the ground during takeoff, and a gust of wind along with an odd bounce, would roll the aircraft over, killing the pilot by crushing the canopy. More Bf109's were lost in this manner than killed by the enemy. But in an experienced pilot, this can be used to outmaneuver the enemy as well.

    Tips on fighting the Spitfire in the 109: On the merge, go vertical immediately. The Spitfire can't follow you up, it has to break off before the 109. By the time you are at the top of your climb the Spit should be below you and you should have more energy. Basically the 109 is an energy fighter, you need to Boom and Zoom if you wan't to beat Spitfires consistenly. Once you are on his six, don't follow him in horizontal turns, simply get as close as you can fire off a few shots on your pass and go vertical again. Any half-decent Spitfire pilot will outturn your 109 in horizontal turns, but they will really struggle against a 109 that keeps their energy up. You don't want to turn fight a Spit in a 109 ever. Sure you can follow him down in a downward spiral like in your video, but if he tries to go horizontal or up, go for a close range gun pass, break off, get above him and rinse and repeat. You also asked about aiming. Basically you want to hold your fire ideally until his whole plane fills up your reticule. I usually hold my fire until Im at least 100m from the enemy, most often I wait even longer until he fills up my entire windshield. Since you will ideally have more energy and more speed on your passes this shouldn't be too hard, as long as you remember not to follow him horizontally. Thats about it.
    Please note: This applies mostly to online fights against real players. Against the AI you can get away with more, but the AI has a stupid tendency to cheat when flying vertically.

    What I know about the 109 you should always try to keep your speed up(I guess that's the case with all fighters though lol) and go vertical. Spitfire is better in horizontal turns(Even though quite a few pilots from WWII claimed that 109 could outturn the spit) so don't try to turnfight a spit with 109. When it comes to aiming I remember reading about some 109 pilot who said that in order to shoot a turning enemy you should turn so much that the enemy is just hidden behind your nose and you would most likely hit him, so I guess you were very close to hitting him all the time(I quess you could've been a bit closer)

    He was never going to win in that downward spiral, as the bf109 had a faster dive speed than the spitty.
    What he should have done in realizing that he was going to overshoot on his descent towards you, was to use his energy advantage, and immediately bank left and nose up, in order to create separation and regain altitude. Although the bf109 had a faster climb rate, you were coming from a stall, so you have no momentum to initiate a climb with him. By the time you would have developed decent inertia, he would've had the altitude advantage once again.

      Poor Budget Gamer right. I don't know how flight models are modeled in that tho. But if you have more energy than him ur safe. That's only true if u both have about the same energy. If u can leave him in ur dust when u go vertical u got no worries.

    • @icin4d
      @icin4d 5 лет назад

      At the point you say he has a dilemma, his speed is .5M and yours is .3M. I'm thinking he should have gone vertical again. His slow circling spiral downward looked futile as he didn't out turn you and you slowly pulled lead. I thought the Spit was better at this. What if in stead of a downward spiral, he started a climbing spiral?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 лет назад

      icin4d I think against a good bf109 that would be a death sentence but he didn't know I was a shit bf109 pilot lol. So had he known that ya he should have gone vertical I wouldn't have been able to follow. But if u assume the bf109 pilot knows what he's doing coupled with the bf109s very decent climbing abilities (under a good pilot) I wouldn't chance going vertical with him on my tail. Just my 2 cents.

    • @icin4d
      @icin4d 5 лет назад

      So with both your speeds being relatively the same in the downward spiral, a Spit has no banking/turning advantage? Or was it just this pilot?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder

      icin4d it's my understanding that the spitfire had a better turn radius than the 109 so I'm going to guess it's a fault of the spit for not wanting to pull the Gs required to out turn me.
