I've watched hours & hours to learn how to do these magical wraps. You're the first one that actually showed from design to engrave! I can't thank you enough for your video. I don't feel so intimidated now.
Great vid thank you. as far as aligning the circle and rectangle its way easer to use the align tools on the tool bar over typing in the cords. right click on the top of lightburn and tick arrange long and arrange. that should bring up those tools for you...
To help yourself out with measuring your cups or anything you ar engraving it would be a good idea to get yourself a 6" caliper. Then you can just measure the diameter and multiply that by 3.1415926 to get the circumference. Lightburn has added a warp feature that may aid in the design of cups that are bigger around at the top than they are at the bottom. Also when you want to align the tops or bottoms of two objects is simple in LightBurn. Just highlight both objects and use the alignment tool. Nice video and I hope you have as much fun engraving as I do. It's a good ways to spend one's retirement.
Thanks Kris - I have a caliper - hadn’t thought to use it for that. I’ve been investigating the warp feature but it’s behavior isn’t quite what I expect! Have you used it for cups in this way? Thanks for the alignment tips too! Appreciate it
@@ThingsKatieMakes I haven't as of yet but only because I haven't downloaded the new release of LightBurn yet. Now that you asked me, I remembered I need to do that. :
@@krisknowlton5935 I’ve been playing around with it and have some questions out on the forum. I’m not quite getting the results I want using it, but we’ll see!
@@ThingsKatieMakes I often wonder if people buy these lasers thinking they will be able to make a couple hundred grand a year making stuff and selling it on ETSEY. There is a lot of work and head scratching involved and a lot of wasted material. So they just give up. I have a feeling you don't fit that category. I feel fairly certain you will figure out how to make it work the way you need it to. That's what makes it fun. You have a great evening.

@@ThingsKatieMakes Any issues with your thunder laser? alignment, customer support, etc. I am considering getting the Nova 24 but have been back and forth with Omtech or Thunder.
Hi there - that's a pretty difficult question to answer without more context. But, I think the new Thunder Laser USA ThunderBolt is pretty amazing $5k price point, with a 30watt RF tube and has a z axis so you can do tumblers as well. Not sure if that's the range of not expensive you are looking for. If you really don't know what you want to do, you can go for something like a Glowforge Aura which will give you a taste of what a laser could do for $1200.
@@KiLLaDaTa oh my goodness - me either and it has so many uses. It was designed to help when you need to split something because it is too big for your bed, but it’s kind of like a really cool clipping mask too!
Thanks for sharing! I'm a little confused by how you are able to base the whole design based on the largest portion of the cup. Why do you not need to a much smaller pattern on the bottom of the cup since it's substantially smaller? Example top of top design is 6 inches and bottom 4?
So it’s kind of complicated to explain. It isn’t like cutting a vinyl wrap because the laser is just traveling in a straight line, and the distance it goes on each rotation is determined by the rotary, it doesn’t actually care about the size of the cup. It’s kind of like why once you’ve determined your steps per rotation, that applies to all cups unless the part on the roller is a totally different size than what you’re engraving, like a water bottle. So I need to make sure that the largest part gets fully covered with the design. The smaller part will see some compression of the design. Maybe I’ll try to film an example with some lines to show what that looks like.
Hi! In Lightburn preferences (you go directly from the Lightburn name) there is a toggle switch that says: show work area center cross and you toggle it on - hope that's what you were looking for!
Nice... kinda wish I had a Thunder Laser Nova... since it is both something I usually work on, and my surname-sake =P. (Been using this username for ages)
Hi - a couple of options here - you can use aluminum tape to simply cover the logo, or you'll need to factor it into the design - I'd then likely center my starting point on the yeti logo to make sure I had enough room.
I'm hoping you can help me out, i have omtech 60w laser and I'm very new to lightburn. I'm attempting to do a full wrap however, the engraving only does half the image that I'm trying to engrave. Any ideas to help me out?
Just make sure that the are cleared by your nozzle, air assist, auto-focus or whatever might hit them. A longer focal distance lens helps with the need to clear and stay in focus at the same time

Amazing job 🙌🏻. I’d highly recommend a set of calipers for quick & super accurate diameter measurements rather than a tape 😊

Which rotary are you using in this video?
This one is the Rotoboss Junior - I have that one, the rotobolt and I played around with the Talon for a bit :)
This looks great! Are you using the 4” lens?
Nope - just the standard 2"!

Hmmm - have you run a steps test and engraved a box to make sure your rotation is correct?
I thought that you couldn't engrave metal with co2 lasers? Or are you actually just engraving the coating?
The latter - removing the powder coating to reveal the stainless steel below
How do you handle the little metal tabs of a Stanley?
Just make sure that the are cleared by your nozzle, air assist, auto-focus or whatever might hit them. A longer focal distance lens helps with the need to clear and stay in focus at the same time
i believe you, i do lol BUT how does the bottom where it is skinny not catch overlap?
Ha!! Love this comment - it doesn’t turn any more, so the lines get a little compressed. I need to figure out how to show it. I’m putting it on my list…
The rotary is spinning the wider part of the cup. The skinny side is just along for the ride.
Can you show how to make a seamless pattern?
In illustrator? Or elsewhere?
The distortion, at least on xtool ra2 pro, can be fixed using photoshop and warping.
I do think there a lot of ways to adjust in other tools - but man it's a bit of work, right?
