This is the sad story of a friend of Damiano trasfigurated into a fairy tale.
But the knight is desperate, because even if he's willing to do anything, he can't save his princess, abused by her father and trapped. The castle mentioned in the end, the place where all the suffering ends, is a metaphore for the ancient monumental cemetery of Rome. In the end she found the saddest way to escape, the suicide.
Do you have a source for that? I kinda hate seeing people pushing their own theories as if they were confirmed to be the truth when in fact they are not. Not necessarily saying that's your case but please then show your source or explain what makes it obvious that the "castle" is the monumental cemetery of Rome, cause as far as I can see that's nothing more than one interpretation as many possible others.

In Rome, the city of origin of the Maneskin, there is the main cemetery 'Verano' which the local inhabitants call 'the castle'. The plot of the song is unfortunately inspired by a true story, of a young girl that Damiano knew.

In a interview they said that the song is inspired by a true story. Coraline is a fictional name chosen for its musicality. They refused to give any details about the girl, but they said that it's not a fairy tale, there is no knight in shining armor that save the day. The real story has a tragic ending.
Some people speculate that the castle in the end could be a cemetery in Rome called Verano or a psychiatric facility, but we'll never know.
What I know for sure is that every time I listen to this song, I'm moved beyond words.

E' vero, molto bravo. Brillante l'osservazione sul numero limitato di note, quasi una cantilena, nella parte in cui si raccontano i tentativi pieni di speranza, ma inutili. Come a dire "Ho provato questo, quest'altro, quest'altro ancora e poi ancora..." ed alla fine Coraline piange come all'inizio.
YOU'RE GREAT! I'm italian I love English, don't get me wrong. For me English is quick and easy to "give the idea" of what you mean to say. easy peasy! you have a new word when necessary, we don't do that. But Italian sounds so poetic and sweet (plus Damiano's voice and interpretation makes you really feel the sadness, the hopelessness, every emotions but obv all the band together not just him). In this song he uses words that we don't use in common conversations, so it's even more poetic. The English translation :( sadly takes the magic away. But music is an international language, come on!

Yep. English is not really that poetic. I think it’s cause it’s so complicated. Our gramma doesn’t really make much sense. I’m learning Italian. It’s a beautiful language. But I don’t think many English speakers find other languages easy. This is because we barely understand our own grammar. It is so complicated we are never taught to understand it. So learning another language is hard. I was lucky someone took the time to teach me. So I can enjoy Italian and Italian music 😊
@@kayleighbullen6483 English grammar is easy, believe me. My mother tongue is Serbian, and I learned (or tried to learn) German, Italian, Spanish, Greek and Russian. English is the easiest one. Reading and writing in English can be a problem (compered to Serbian), but grammar is easy.
@@LivinginDogville I agree that English gramma is easy. But we are never taught how it works. We just know what words go in what order, but not why. So when people who have English as their mother tongue (at least from England specifically) try to learn a foreign language they can really struggle. I had a brilliant Latin teacher. But from what I can remember, she spent months teaching us how English gramma worked. Otherwise, the mystery of Latin gramma would have never been something I could have learned (and do not remember most of today). So when I started learning Italian on duo lingo I used this information that I had been taught. Italian gramma is very easy compared to English. I am still learning it at a very slow pace. But I do love Italian. I would like to learn more languages in the future. Maybe not Serbian; if it is as hard as you say!

It’s honestly what just happens now, my generation just has ended up growing up so quickly, partially because of the pandemic, partially because we grew up in the age of the internet, partially because of our parents situations and the situations we live with with our countries. I mean often times when we go over our life experiences with people of older generations they end up with their jaws hanging open. Especially young Italian and French people because of the situations here in Italy and in France both politically and socially, a lot of us have grown up with parents plummeting through social classes because of inflation, because of recessions and now because of COVID and that’s led to a lot of us experiencing abuse, experiencing others near us being abused or abusing substances ourselves or knowing others who do, having our bodies and our appearances constantly critiqued by people we barely know which leads to eating disorders and even more. We really got the short end of the stick and unfortunately the band members of måneskin are no different, however they channel it into their lyrics as their outlet and it leads to beauty from trauma, we’re a generation of phoenixes and I love it, and I love that you noticed it! I hope you can appreciate their music as much as I do 💜.

I'm 20 and i deeply understand the lyrics. Understanding this topic is not really about age. But i do agree that young artists usually don't write songs that heavy and Damiano is such a good lyricist
This lyrical ballad has some of the deepest and most tragic meanings of all Maneskin's repertoire. It is told in the form of a medieval fairy but tragic tale.The truths Coraline knows are so atrocious you can't even name them. Read the lyrics once without music. Put the meaning of each stanza in the story together and you will discover Coraline's 'heavy burden' and why she is so anxious and she doesn't want to 'eat' but rather she wants to 'disappear'.
Stanza 1: description of Coraline's appearance: she is a beautiful girl and sensitive, she feels the sorrow of other people and she carries it within herself.
Stanza 2: description of C's tragic psychological reality: her heart is broken into two halves, she has lost all her energy because of the evil she has to suffer and people who don't know about her inner self and the violence and 'burden' she has been exposed to say she is weak and can't do even the most common things (going out of a door). But one day she will succeed to go through that door and her life will start to change. A new beginning for her will then be possible.
Stanza 3: The singer tells C she can change her life 'take her things and leave', but C doesn't have the force to react, she 'wants the sea but she's afraid of the water', there is a monster she is afraid of... a father who is not a father... and now we know that the sea is really inside her and her womb... She loses the fruit of her womb. She doesn't know the meaning of love... And any word said to soothe her sorrow and help her is useless it is like an 'axe in the back'...
Stanza 4: what will the singer be for her if she wants to be helped. He will know her truth and fight for her without asking for anything in change.
Stanza 5: conclusion: we end in the same way as the story started (in a circular movement) = there is no solution to C's burden. There's a castle in town with walls so massive and solid that nothing more will afflict C. She will find eternal peace inside that castle.
Maneskin once said in an interview that this song is based on a true story. The name Coraline has been chosen for musical reasons.
Great review, reaction, and analysis. Probably the best I have seen for this song. My advice for this song is to listen straight through, to feel the emotion and mood, and the beautiful Italian language. Then go back and analyze/understand the lyrics.
People will say this and that about the meaning of the song, but I think that the author purposely uses poetry with metaphors, and ambiguous meanings, so that I, as a listener can relate my own personal feelings and emotions, and thus connect with the song even more so.
So while I have not suffered severe abuse in my personal life, I have worked with many persons in my professional life who are trauma victims and survivors. And I have two daughters, so this song evokes a lot of emotion in me including hope, frustration, anger and sadness.
To me it is just a masterpiece. Oh and yes I love this band.

The Sanremo performance of this song, two days ago, takes it to another level, with the full orchestra arrangement and seeing the band, and especially Damiano's heartfelt and raw performance. A unique experience.
This is not a reaction, this is a great analysis and a beautiful interpretation. You asked for suggestions or insides, but I think it is up to you (to the listeners) to get what the lyric is telling.

I've listened to this song like a hundred times and even analyzed it on a deep level with my girlfriend since we both love meaningful music ( we're both Italians ) and your point about there being two different time periods of the perspective of the character talking about " Coraline"; The One hopeful and the one who's tried but failed, joined by the change of tempo with the instrumentals it's so insightful. as an Italian seeing you guys love our language so much is awesome, and we have maneskin to thank for that. what a blast.
The band decided not to disclose details, they just said it's based on a true story. So it's open to interpretation. So here's mine.
Depression is quite clear at the begining. So is social pressure. The story is told by someone who's in love with her. Not necessarily a lover tho, since he wants her to leave but not to be with him ("nothing in return"). It's possible she sees him as a friend.
Now, water and sea requires a bit of Måneskin context here, the sea/ocean is used a symbol of freedom in other songs of theirs. Imagine you're stranded on a island. You want to sail away (or even swim away) but the water itself is dangerous. The sea is the way to break free but the water is what keeps you there. This is much the same of the door at the beginning. Coraline wants to get out but she's afraid of what's outside.
The next part is about hope, and about him offering help. Your analysis is spot on especially on that ostinato of sort, to express repeated efforts. Then there's anger for not being able to break her out of her situation. The guitar solo ends that part. The last part is just sadness for the loss.
You can go as dark as you want on the last verses. What I see is a young woman who's been taken advantage of, got pregnant, had an abortion but with zero support from the family, especially her father. This is just a bit less dark than an abusive father, which is not clearly stated in the lyrics (the reference to her father occurs after the others, not before).
For the part about the castle, you need to know that all the cemeteries I've seen in Italy have strong walls. I wouldn't focus too much on "they", the Italian is slightly less specific "Hanno detto che..." is kinda "she heard that...". There no pronoun in the Italian lyrics. Yet it's still possible it refers to the people at the beginning who said she's worth nothing.
"... wants the sea but is afraid of water" , could it be " she would like to have a better life but is afraid of freedom" !? It is common to those who suffer of anxiety and depression.

I was scared to do it but it was the best decision. Build up what’s good for you, create a better life by changing surroding in whatever way that might be.

Great reaction! You made a really interesting conclusion at the end concerning the part of the castle and the walls. The castle has been mostly interpreted to be either mental asylum or a cemetery. Either way the story of this poor girl is so tragic and sadly not one of a kind.
The part of “Coraline wants the sea but she’s afraid of the water, and maybe the sea is inside of her”, I see it as she’s longing for freedom but is afraid to reach for it, but maybe the strength she needs and the key to her freedom can be found inside her. Greetings from Finland!

you’re totally right, listening without understanding the words while reading the english translation is probably not even 1/10 of the experience that those who understand italian (like myself) have listening to italian songs.
some italian written songs are pure poetry. i’m sorry to say this because it’s not anyone’s fault, but that’s just the truth. it’s not the same thing. the difference between the two experiences is light years apart, really.

I'm Italian and ther are 2 maneskin's songs that are so good in music and lyrics, in Italian.
1: "torna a casa" kinda sad vibe. Means "Come back home" from their first album (Marlena is his muse)
2: "la paura del buio" hard Rock mad vibe, my favorite. Means "fear of the dark" from their last album.

As for "they", in Italian it's more of an "impersonal subject" so it sounds like "She heard that there's a castle..." Anyone can fill that image with their experience or imagination: drug abuse, suicide/cemetery, asylum. It sure doesn't sound like a redemption song, unfortunately
Many video reactions of Coraline is done in emotional way , that’s nice. But this is the most complete and deeepest reaction in the music structure and llyrics of this song I have ever seen in RUclips. You give us many aspects of every single part of Coraline to think about . I see for the first time in a reaction the Spotlight on the the technical music and vocal analisys that explain very well the link between the music and poetic lyrics and let us understand much better why we love this song so much. Damiano ha scritto questa canzone ha 17 anni l'amica che è ancora una "bambina" aveva tra 14 e 15 anni rimasta incinta e abbandonata dall'uomo che ha abusato, trova un padre violento ,che la picchia e non la fa uscire di casa ,"prima o poi lei ci riuscirà" si confida per telefono con l'amico e affranta e disperata parla di suicidio "vuole il mare ma ha paura dell'acqua" è fragile "una zattera in un fiume in piena" non sa spiegare una " colpa" che il padre gli attribuisce lei era innamorata, le parole gentili di conforto per dissuaderla da gesti estremi "capirò cosa hai dentro" se piangi fai piangere anche me "oceano sopra il mio viso" poi il dramma ,il dolore della perdita di un figlio ed un padre assente, e poi l'ultimo epilogo tragico di un'esistenza breve di una bambina che sognava l'amore e che si è trasformato in un inferno. The castle in town is actually a cemetery , she killed herself because she couldn't take the abuse any more , after she had a miscarriage.
True and tragic story of the singer, Damiano , who knew her , a friend , in the past .

I too was very puzzled by all those alusions to water. At 1st I thought it was a metaphor for depression/suicidal thoughts. It reminded me of a bunch of emo songs from my teenage years. The whole imagery about drowning and tears is very familiar.
But after digging into the lyrics more, I do believe it's much more complex. Some alusions seem to have a positive meaning and some a very dark one.
It's up to interpretation but here's mine:
- "Coraline wants the sea but is afraid of water": I do believe the sea refers to her wish to escape from her abusive household. So freedom basically which is a known metaphor for the sea. Being afraid of water means she's afraid to do so. This makes sense since she suffers from anxiety. Victims of abuse often fear the outside world and the potential retaliation if they leave. According to this interpretation, the verse is about her considering leaving but feeling traped which is hinted at several times throughout the song. I think the sea is a very clever image to capture this feeling because it's beautiful, dangerous and lonely.
- "and maybe the sea is inside her"
(following verse): IMO it refers to her inner strenght and life drive. It's quite common to use water as a metaphor for vital energy (or life in general) because, well...we are made of it and need it to live. I do believe this verse is quite optimistic and means that she can still escape (at this point in the song), she has it in her. The singing gave me this vibe.
- "Every word is an axe, a stab to her back. Like a raft sailing a swolen river": There, the instru, singing and lyrics become very violent. I'm conviced the image of rafting the river depicts the sexual abuse which is hinted at again later on. That's quite graphic.
- "and maybe the river is inside her" (following verse): This might be consider a bit of a stretch but I think the river refers to her pregnancy. The previous verse depicted the abuse and this one right after the pregnancy that resulted from it. Once again the water means life, the one she's bearing in her womb.
- "I'll be what you breathe [...] And I'll be the water you drink". Here again water is refered to as a living need. Her friend is offering to fulfill her needs by supporting her (emotionally) and/or provide for her (materialistically).
- "Every little tear of yours is an ocean on my face" shows desperation on both part but also compassion. Contrary to my initial understanding of the song, I now believe this verse is the only one aluding to water as a metaphor for sadness.
Overall I think those metaphors about water are intended to sum up her life and capture her conflicting emotions. In her short existence, she experienced abuse and desperation but also hope and true friendship. The real life story is absolutely tragic but the song somehow ended up kinda bittersweet.
Songs dealing with mental health are usually such downer. The person feels lonely and commits suicide. End of. IMO it's less depressing and more hopefull when the story is told from an outside perspective.
Coraline felt lonely and isolated. But as an audience, we know she wasn't. She had at least one person literally begging to help her. That leaves us wandering about an alternative happy ending had she reached for it and left.
May it serve as a reminder to anyone going throught depression that no matter how lonely and hopeless you feel, you have love and support in your life. Try not to lose sight of it. It's there, somewhere.

I think it's interesting how people who have English as their native language struggle with reading lyrics while listening to songs. I've seen it in other reaction videos too. I mean I grew up reading german translations while listening to English songs, so I'm used to it and I think a lot of people who learned English later in life did the same thing.
I have listened to this song so many times but you gave quite a few new angles and insights. Great video!

Great reaction and and it helped me to keep thinking about the true meaning of the whole text, which nobody knows. Maybe not even Damiano. "Tell me YOUR truth" ... not just the truth. "And maybe the sea is inside her" as well as the river in flood. The only truth that is certainly true is that she suffered an abortion and that there is a totally inadequate father, but not necessarily guilty of sexual abuse. Or maybe yes ... but the sexual abuse may have been done by someone else. Certainly, Coraline's mind is no longer able to think rationally ... it is like a raging river. And the only solution she sees is suicide. In Italy, asylums no longer exist by law. No one can remain isolated in it forever.

Great reaction! I feel like Coraline was abused, may be even by her own father, or may be by someone else, but her own family didn't support her, she's lost the baby and then killed herself. And the castle in the city where nothing can touch you is a grave. Such a powerful song and I cry each time I hear it
yeah "the castle" is how the monumental cemetery of "Verano" in Rome is known to locals, so yeah you're pretty right!

In Italian, the third person plural is often used impersonally. So the "they" doesn't actually mean a specific person. A more accurate translation of that line would be "she was told there's a castle", because the focus is supposed to be on her and not the people speaking to her, if that makes sense

And no, you are not supposed to know what it's about as a fan nor first listener. Damiano (singer and lyricist) has only said its a true story told as a fairytale but with a tragic ending.
I always interpeted the piece in the middle as the person who tries to help coming to terms with the fact that what hope he had at the start is in fact useless. After which he makes one last desperate plea in the bridge before accepting she is lost at the end and commits suicide.
what a brilliant reaction because now maneskin has made people react to the lyrics instead of the music and thinking is it danceable . and as a spaniard and been a fan of italian music your spot on about italian music being very poetic and beautiful while the english is just plain bland and heavy .

This's a TRUE Story, but in the Fairy the Prince Save the Princess! In this Song Damiano (the frontman to Maneskin) couldn't to help Coraline (not a true name of the girl)! Very Sade Story and the Castle is a Cemetery of Verano in Rome.
It's just poetry in notes! Magnificent listening to the whole non Italian Europe singing along during their performances all this time. Can't wait for them to come to Greece!

This song definitely needs to be listened to more than once to get it all in, as the lyrics are captivating but there's also some interesting stuff going on musically. I knew you'd pay attention to the silence and time sig chances, but you pointed out some other details I had failed to notice. Good to get a better understanding of the musical side of this too, not just lyrics 🙂 Although you got the meaning of the lyrics down pretty well too, as far as any one of us can without knowing the full story!
I actually didn't even really like Coraline when I first heard it just listening through the album without any idea of what it's all about. It was deceptively simple, the repetition felt almost annoying and I didn't really get the time changes either. But it grew on me fast and soon became one of my favourites.
So originally I sometimes skipped it because I didn't get it, but now I sometimes can't listen to it for the opposite reason. I sometimes think that charts are full of boring and empty songs because the actually interesting ones either require some brain activity to fully enjoy them or they trigger emotions people can't deal with.

Måneskin are a fantastic young band, Damiano, the singer, writes the lyrics and the music is the work of the whole band. They started very young, when they were 16 to 18 years old and even earlier. Coraline is from a true story. They are extraordinary, I recommend listening to La Fear of the Dark, Twenty Years and Bruises on the Elbows as well as Zitti and Buoni with which they saw Sanremo in Italia and l'Eurovision, taken from the latest album Teatro d'Ira volume. From the previous Album The dance of life, I recommend Back home and The distant words. These are all wonderful pieces in Italian but the English language production is beautiful too. At 12:30 you said "It's no accident". I agree and add that he I hear as if he used these two repetitive tones specifically.
When the sentence ends with a "dark" word he would go down a notch. He would use the higher tone when the last word was a "positive" one.

This is actually a real story about Damiano's friend, he preferred not sharing who was about specificallly but he's still really passionate about this song and get's pretty emotional whenever he plays it
I feel like this is him begging desperately to go back in time, to be able to tell her what he didn’t tell her ( I’ll be your shield… just smile) to save her. But she is already dead (“her heart is already cold”), she took the courage to walk out of that door to kill herself. It felt like he was saying “they mocked her thinking that she was weak, but she actually had the strength to do something extreme”.
And another fantastic reactionalysis!!! I would never heard of this awesome group if it wasn’t for you!!! And I agree about English being a crap language compared to Italian!!!! Haha I prefer when he sings in Italian, even though I have no idea what he is saying!!! 🤷♀️ it just sounds better, IMO of course.

You got the message, bravo. Your analysis is deep and right about the story and music. Damiano, the singer and the boy who write their lyrics talk about a girl abused by her father in a small village where people blame her and not the raper. She could be happy but the abuses put her in an abyss of pain and the voices in her head don’t want to listen to who want to help her because she’s just dead inside. The voices at the end told her if she die she ll in peace repaired by strong walls of death that nobody can open. And she committed suicide. It’s a very sad song, very emotional and you are right: no translation can give the sense of this songs because for a person who just listen but don’t want or aren’t interested to understand it’s just an intricate story of a girl with lots of problems.

I feel like the very quiet, slow part is explaining Coraline's situation from the stand point of another person (a friend, a lover you choose). And the change in dynamic is going from that person talking about Coraline's situation into that person becoming more and more frustrated, because that other person offers Coraline everything they possibly can, but Coraline can't accept the help offered, because she is the creator of her own doubts, her fears and her uncertainties so the end of the song repeating the beginning shows that this circle Coraline seems to be stuck in just repeats itself and continues. But even though the song itself ends without clearly finding a way to end Coraline's struggle, the song itslef still gives hope, because maybe Caroline will be able to seek all the things the other person offers to be for her.
I understood it immediately, never having heard it before (w/o knowing Italian). The reason why I knew is simply bc I've been in the same situation. She's being abused, but empathizes with her abuser. She feels everyone's pain and buries her own. Her abuser caused her to miscarry and that experience is just physical and emotional pain pouring out of you.

Haven't really watched the whole video but I need to add damiano's (the singer and writer of this song) point of view cause I think it really sums it up perfectly. He said in an interview that this song is about a real person and this isnt a love story, actually there's the prince charming in here, the one who will be the "shelter in winter, the light in the evening ecc", but he can't anything, he can't save her, there's no happy ending in this fairytale, cause in real life sometimes it just doesn't go right, the happily ever after is not guaranteed. So yeah, this is a tragic song and I think it's a very powerful one. Plus people on the internet assumed that the last line about the castle with the strong wall is actually a cemetery cause once you're dead there's nothing that can hurt you. Before reading this theory I thought it meant that her father (who could possibly be the one who abused her) told her to go and hide somewhere: if you don't show yourself people won't have nothing to tell about you and you won't also have to face all your fear but at the same time you are putting a stop to your life just because you're scared. And now I'm back to finish the video!! So far, I'm really enjoying it 😊
