I think there is no doubt with his catalogue with Rainbow, Sabbath and Dio that Ronnie left behind one of THE greatest metal back catalogues of all time. I truly cannot think of one BAD album in the entire collection. A couple of his solo records aren't as strong as others, but they're still serviceable.
Iv'e put RonnieJames Dio in my top three best metal singers. I first saw Ronnie with Rainbow when there Long Live Rock and Roll album came out. Ticket cost me $7.50 to see them at Swing Autotorium in San Bernardino, CA. They were the headliner at this show and i can still remember why my friends and me went to the show in San Bernardino. Cool ranking the James and good to hear your thoughts on the albums. Agree with the top 3 then it could be any order for the rest as like you say no bad albums.
Let’s not forget Viv on guitar. Every solo and riff he wrote was absolutely incredible. Last in line solo, invisible solo just another day riff- just a few.
I love Lock Up the Wolves! It's Dio's doom album, basically. So many doomy heavy tracks on it, and the guitarist smashes it out of the park. All his albums are great though. Hungry For Heaven, the Sister to Rainbow In the Dark basically, with that thematic synth line perfectly synched to the guitar riff! Love that sound... feels so fresh and energetic, even though both these songs could be called somewhat commercial. Thanks for putting "Killing the Dragon" up there in the rankings, cause I sort of missed this album and never listened to it... Time to give a whirl!
