Hi Angus, for me, Vivian is one of the best rockguitarrists of all time. His rhythym playing ist awesome, his leadguitar absolutely killer and so melodic. His playing is always for the song and so remarkable.Thank you that you give him the honour and Tribute. Kind regards from Germany
Damm man you nailed it those are the top 4 for me as well Viv is such a great player and composer I love the way he speeds up, gets a little shreddy then turns a corner and resolves into a big ol’e bend. So many players of the era were going Mach Jesus but he really knows how to build tension and release all while staying firmly in touch with the melody of the song. I’ve always thought regardless of technique the best solos are the ones you hum along to in your head. Nice work!
I never really appreciated Vivian, this video changed all that, now he's one of my absolute favorite, you're renditions are amazing and show the genious of him, thank you very much Angus
Thank you for creating videos like these, Angus. I definitely love watching you shred on the guitar! My family and I have been attending TSO shows every year here in Dallas since the year 2000 and I always leave the shows wanting to get home as fast as possible and play guitar into the night. Thank you for all the great music!
I love Vivian on those albums. I remember him talking about playing in Def Leppard and how much better Phil is then him. Phil is good but so is Vivian, I think he's very humble when it comes to his own playing and maybe sells himself short in regards to other players. I'd rather listen to him vs. Phil but that's just me. Rainbow in the Dark was the first song I learned when I started playing guitar in 83'
I love the fact that you’re so knowledgeable when it comes to music and you’re more than happy to share it. Your guitar skills way beyond TSO amaze me.Thank you for this great video and yes I am into Vivian Campbell and Dio as much as you are! 😉
Vivian Campbell was one of my early "Heroes" because of "Holy Diver". "Rainbow in the Dark" was the first solo Dio song I ever learned. I even went and bought some Dimarzio Dual Sound Humbuckers because Viv was featured in an ad with them in Guitar Player or something, stuck them into a no name clone with cheap pickups. Love the videos man! Love listening to you jam!
Man, what a great video, great selected solos and great playing. To me, the Holy Diver album represents the best example of vocals on an album, bass, guitar, and drums. Maybe bc each song is so exquisitely done and so classic. But I believe a student of any of those instruments would do well to study there, on that album. And yes, The Last in Line title track stood above the others. Cool album cover, btw. Compared to the iconic Holy Diver album with each song being a greatest hits basically, the follow-up was a let down, while still solid nonetheless. Vivian and his guitar playing, thanks for representing so well.
I've met Vivian about 20 times in the last 10 or so years. Super cool guy. Definitely one of my earliest heroes too. He still rips those solos to this day with Last in Line, the band. It's great to see him and Vinny Appice together again. Have you ever played some of their stuff? Definitely check out God's and Tyrants from their 2nd album II.
I’ve been playing since 1977. Tried to learn Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. Then Eddie came out in 1978. I wish I could nail those solos like you. I still play almost every day. Attention deficit keeps me from unlocking those solos. I’ll watch your videos again and try to glean something off them. Great playing!!
I love Vivian. He motivated me to pick up the guitar two years ago… I’m not good at all. I practice scales every day and to end my practice routine I’ll try to learn a part of a song. I hope to be able to cover some of his parts. A huge inspiration for me! I have his Epiphone model Holy Diver Les Paul! I absolutely love it!
I'm also a huge fan of those 2 albums and Campbell's playing on them! I recently got up a vinyl player again after abandoned that format in the ninties. And I happen to have this albums since the eighties. One thing I react to when listen to vinyl compared to spotify for example, is that I sit and listen to the FULL album, not skipping any songs which is too easy when listening at digital medias. Of course all songs on these albums are great, but some are lower rated than the most known ones. But even in the songs some may skip, or not put in their playlist also have 10/10 solos! Viv absolutely gived 100% on ALL songs! I never liked Def L. so don't tell me he does great solos there too because I wont listen on that ear 😉
Angus, you are extremely accomplished and talented in your own right! So awesome that you’re so humbly and expertly paying homage to these influences! 🔥🔥🔥🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Saw him in Last in Line a year ago. He really ripped it. I met him and RJD at a radio station in Alaska in 1984. Both him and Dio were really nice guys.....
Viv’s solo is always very logical in my opinion.I mean,he has one of the fastest fingers among those traditional heavy metal guitarists, but he hated to “show off ”about his speed at the beginning. The solos always appeared step by step and are full of aggressive notes. That really attracted me when I first heard DIO’s first two albums. Viv ,JEL and RR are my favorite guitarists in heavy metal world.
I know him in a tour when I was 14 years Ivbeen a tour in Charlotte North Carolina it was amazing when I saw the Def Leppard then I saw a kiss in Charlotte North Carolina 2014 it was in July you have to see because cuz my two guys amazing guitar player like like Vivian Campbell and Tommy Taylor those two guys are amazing guitar players I have a shirt of Def Leppard then kiss bands was my dream come true I did and I been started playing guitar when I was 10 years ago I started playing guitar I started playing the drums when I was 20 24 years ago I started to play piano the same 24 years ago that was a lot because I been playing 3 instruments drums guitar and piano
Just a Boss OD into an amp like a 2203? I do not see any power lights on, so wondered if you used plugins. I don't blame you if you did. They are not at all like playing through an amp and cab, but they make life a lot easier and sound near enough the same in the mix (they sound smaller and less weighty, but so can an amp once it goes through a mic etc).
I'd add one more solo I really liked from Vivian/Dio Hungry for Heaven. Vivian had his own style of slow muted and lower tone notes to fast higher tone notes, the mixture was just spot on!
@@AngusClarkGTR Thanks! Sounds awesome! I can hear the nods to Vivian in the best way - the cascading runs up to the searing top note, intervalic jumps, staccato march to the soulful bend. Really nailed the vibe and just a great solo overall. Bravo!
God I feel bad, I saw the mob rules tour and the first concert Dio ever did at the San Jose concert barn, why do I feel bad? That means you’re around the same age as me and I’m not aging near as well as you, I lost my hair 😂 **edit: See you hopefully soon in Vegas with TSO in November
That's a bit off base and laughable. He was amazing but many of those songs were written on a piano by Dio. Vivian definitely did his thing. But Vivian would have been nothing without Dio's song writing and voice. Let's just say they were a great team!
Nice!!! Vivian Campbell is one of the all time greats!!!!
Agreed!
Angus, ya know what's awesome? You and your guitar playing! I love your interpretation of these guitar solos 🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸🔥
Thanks!
Vivian Campbell is THE GOAT!

Awesome job!
I wish I could like this video 10 times
I just finally decided I wanted to learn the Holy Diver lead last week, this is already a big help! Good Call on discussing Vivian!
Don’t forget Shadow King!
An album and I think one show. Not sure why that one didn't work. Maybe Vivian was already heading to Whitesnake...
@@chrislebon5927Pretty sure Whitesnake was before Shadow King
Holy diver is a tune you can play anytime, anywhere and it’s just as amazing as the first time you heard it!
Fantastic! It's great to witness your precision and the love you give this great man and his music!
Absolutely great video, this is real shredding material, these are undoubtedly his best solos.Thank you very much!!!

So cool!!

Smokin, Killed all of them, but Last In Line WOW, you just ripped that one that bend hurt my fingers LOL
Thanks!
Nice job on playing the solos.. sounded great.. Viv approaches solos from a very different / unique vantage point
Thanks!
Awesome! New fan here! Great stuff!

Rainbow in the Dark is among the greatest heavy metal solos of all time. Was completely blown away the first time I heard it.

Have you heard the "Shadow King" LP that he did with Lou Gramm?
I haven’t!!

I think all of these clips were done at different times so it’s a mix things: S-Gear, Axe-FX, Quad Cortex. Viv used a Boss OD into a 2203.
@@AngusClarkGTR Are you using Pariah pickups in your LP? If so which ones? Thanks!
@@FRX67 yes, they are a custom wind - ask Sean!

The first song I heard of Dio was I Speed at Night,,then got Holy Diver and The last in Line

Now do John Sykes.
Mine would have to be America from the Riverdogs album.
Great record!
Can you post a link to the version of "This is your life"?

You have to have some legit skills to pull that off. Holy Diver is one of the top 5 greatest guitar albums IMO.

Vivian with Dio was thw best.
Ripped that last in line solo!!
You would’ve been great in Dio man.
Viv was the star of Dio, not RJD. The band was no good without Viv. Dio owes him money still.
