While it must have been comforting for many in the North West to see the Granada logo ("Granadaland is still here and tomorrow will come"), you can actually hear poor Maggie choke up as she says "but now...". I can only imagine the terrible stress and strain that both the Network announcers in London and the GMG North ones in Leeds were under that night.
It’s more to do with the fact that broadcasting a scheduled programme would give them more time to plan and rehearse for the longer news special later in the night.
The Ingram recording was the previous weekend and due to air Saturday 15th/Tuesday 18th IIRC. As it turned out, schedule changes due to 9/11 provided the cover for a "special extended episode" to be formed out of the rest of that episode and the one already due for the 22nd.
@BriWayne ISTR seeing this menu on Scottish TV during the week after September 11th, with the ITV1 branding. STV weren't as seperatist in their attitude towards ITV1 in those days. But I can't confirm this.
That would be because, in those days, ITV was a brand that wasn't specific to any part of the UK. When Carlton and Granada adopted it as their company name and used it for the English regions, you can understand STV's discomfort.

The following night's games did get postponed, and squeezed into a spare midweek on October 10 (meaning those four groups played three straight midweeks - 2020-esque scheduling there). In those days there was a second group stage rather than a knockout round of 16, and that started in November so it was a tight fit to get everything in!
