Hydro - nutrients Miracle Grow Soil - nutrients Microgreen soil mix - nutrients Coco - No nutrients ......... I think it'd be useful to see Hydro vs Coco with the same nutrients in each, to see actually which growing medium is better and separate that from nutrients.
We have hydroponic medium tests on our channel where you can see the different hydroponic mediums grown side-by-side! We just finished one and will be posting it in a few days. We used to love using Coco as the control group since it had no nutrients and would act as a baseline for growth.

Purple stems in cannabis is for the most part from phosphor deficiency. In your case this would make sense as coco is fairly inert apart from a little potassium. Most growers i know treat coco like a hydroponics. Can also happen from nutrient lockout, cold temperatures at the root zone or lack of phosphor of course or genetics. Stems can also turn purple under intense PAR sort of like a sun tan. Don't know how relevant this all is to microgreens though.
I agree Drou, coco deficiencies would also explain the least amount of foliage growth paired with purple stems. with cannabis, leaves can also turn a dark purple under intense PAR, as I've experienced with my Fluence spyderx led lights. cheers :)

I'd love to see a video to compare thickness of the grow medium, specifically coco coir. I suspect though it would vary greatly depending on the product being grown.
I assume you are meaning how much coco coir we put into the trays each time to grow them? If that is the case, then you really only need enough to first: germinate the crop well and second: retain moisture and hold water for in-between waterings. Fantastic video. Do you only use untreated seeds for microgreens production? Is it safe to use thiran-treated seeds? If so, what should be the safe period for consumption after sowing?
Thank you so much for the support Nori! We only use untreated seeds. We would not suggest using Thiran-treated seeds because it has been linked to reproductive issues and more. I would suggest purchasing all seeds untreated if possible. The main reasons are that microgreens are grown in very dense quantities and they are harvested very quickly after planting that I doubt the toxins from Thiran would have time to dissipate to a safe level for consumption. You can maybe contact your seed supplier and ask if they have some that are untreated. Right now we use seeds from these three sources: Trueleafmarket.com, Johnnyseeds.com, Sprouting.com. Hello! Currently we are collecting all of ours so that we can find an industrial composting facility that will accept it. We are going to do a test where we try to compost it, but supposedly they can only be composted at special facilities... This is a big reason that we are trying to move away from Biostrate to something more natural like Hemp, Jute or Coco Coir mats!
When we tried oasis cubes we found them to be challenging to grow with. They dry out very quickly and the roots were less likely to penetrate through them and grow downwards. Instead it would push the sprouting out of the oasis cube. Rockwool is something we’ve used for years and it just works so well. Only downside is you gotta be careful handling because it can make you itchy like insulation would 😆🤗🌱🌱
Super excellent - thank you so much for this great info. You saved me a lot of time! My preference is rockwool, but someone had mentioned oasis cubes..but now..I think I will stick with RW
Question? When growing brocolli hydroponically, I am wondering if the smaller, one inch trays provide enough room for roots to grow and take in oxygen.

It is possible! We have actually never measured the pH of the Coco... I don't like the test kits for testing soil pH because it involves mixing water, which in my mind, makes no sense because the pH of the water will effect the testing kit. We will try measuring the pH using something else in upcoming videos!

The Miracle Grow is a growing on compost not a seed compost and while likely has plenty of nutrients maybe has less aeration compared to Roots Organics. As a good rule of thumb - if you want big tops you need to have big bottoms (large root system) - you can nearly always trouble shoot poor yield / poor growth by looking at the root environment - seedlings are particularly sensitive to poor aeration - so the Roots Organics looks to be a good bet for hobby growers without hydroponics. However, what I did notice in a test, was a better outcome when I switched from Epson Salts to pink Himalayan salt. I suspect the base nutrients in Pink Himalayan is likely better than regular Epson.. Also..any body reading this..if you use MB and decide try this..you do have to insure you grind your Pink Himalayan to the same granular consistency as your Epson salt which is fairly fine. This is because you should be measuring it on a gram scale, and the actual volume needs to be the same.
We're actually going to try and get some more types of growing mediums into our space for hydroponics. We haven't tried out rockwool sheets yet so we will see if we can get our hands on some and any others that may look promising.
Good comparison. But there is one very important aspect: no one is doing research on the amount of vitamins and trace elements in plants grown in hydroponics and in the ground. I am 1000% sure that those grown on earth are much richer in terms of vitamins and microelements. We grow and eat greens, not for the color, weight, and height of the plants, but for the taste and health benefits!
You should have used the same water for each soil. I would go for the ocean solution, given what I saw from the nutrient test. The hydroponics can't be considered or compared since it had a different variable. The results would probably different, had you been consistent. Just food for thought. Still a nice video though.
All of the water was the same for this test... The only difference was that the hydroponic group had nutrients added to it. The watersource was all the same though.
Yeah, the issue there is the cost. It would cost $500 per sample, so $1000 minimum to compare. We may at some point, but cost was a hurdle in the past.
@@OnTheGrow Understandable. The reason I asked is because as a consumer growing their own, I don't really care about looks or weight. I just want the most nutritionally dense final product.

I enjoy your comparison videos and am learning a lot as a newbie but, man, you really should research the products that you are talking to help you sound more competent as an educator. Coco coir is not good of nutrients as you seem to think. In just doing a quick search, I discovered that it is high in at least potassium and phosphorus which are very important for plants. Plus, the fiber it contains is important to some of the beneficial fugus/bacteria that live symbiotically with plants should you add any of them to the mix.
Hello! Glad to hear that you are learning so much! And yes, we realized this later on after it was brought to our attention and have since corrected that in another video. Thank you for your support!

The watersource was all the same though.
how much Litre do you use Coco coir? It is 2 Litre on a tray?
Correct, around 1.5 - 2 liter per 10x20 tray
Nice to know which is more expensive compared to yield
Such a thorough comparison, but no price comparison?
This is when we were first getting started :) Most hydroponic mediums are around $1.00 when bought in bulk (packs of 100).
can you do a follow up vid? where you send them to a lab to have nutrients tested and then compare them.
What do you mean by ocean solutions
Ocean Solution (2-0-3) is a nutrient that we have used in our growspace for about 7 months with great results... You can find it here in our nutrient section on Amazon. www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=H9Q1RK38L9D9
Hope that helps!

Please do a cost per gram comparison
Someone needs to do this and test the sulphurophane content
I think the purple might just be a calcium deficiency
Thank you for your support!
biostrate is 2.3$ / tray not worth it
You can find it for about $1.00/tray usually! We still don’t love it because it’s not as comparable as it claims to be.
Copy this to Tikki O., who has no clue how to design an experiment and evaluate the results.
