You know its a tough fight when you start looking through scrolls.

i had the lady Hope with me, and the big fat demon to help me with a 30 roll. So i first try killed him. The 30 hp mass heal of girl "Hope" was isanely OP.
But also my characters are all lvl 12 and with legendary weapons every single one.
The fight was still the most memorable moments of the game for me so far, because of the music.
@@sernolstic4981 I don't disagree, but I can this is why bosses normally have lair actions and legendary actions which would generally prevent the cheese, or at least prevent the fight being trivialised.

The bitter, spiteful way he says "True souls that couldn't be bought!" is so fitting for a devil. He's so pissed that he couldn't goad you into serving him.
Also in 'doomed, detected and caught' , I swear I hear his voice breake for a second, and he sounds so furrieous. How dare this mortal enter his domain and steal from HIM?

its so on the nose, so on character, that i have zero problem imagining him actually singing this durring the battle. i mean this is a guy who stood around outside of the shar temple in act 2 just practicing theatrical ways to present his proposal for you to go after the big demon dude... just hilarious shit.

best thing about htis game that there are multiple villians with unique story lines, but somehow Raphael's one was the most entertaining as it followed you thrugh whole game here and there

Sure, Raphael is a huge menace to nearly every mortal being on Faerun, but almost any immortal with any authority, be it celestial, elemental, infernal or even undead, would smite him without any effort. Makes his grandstanding and presentation towards mortals seem almost like the pathetic make-belief of a con artist and his grand plan with the crown like a desperate grasp for power.

@@p.a.4512 For me, Astarion stabbed him with Carrion Crawler venom. Then he got critted by numerous Divine Smites.
Voice acting in this game sets a new benchmark in gaming history. This isn't even prime Bioware, this is even more than that, somehow. I didn't think it was possible. And from all of the _phenomenal_ voice acting, Raphael's voice actor, Andrew Wincott absolutely hit it out of the park.
I'd say its on par with Prime Bioware, but the actors were given a lot more to do
My only mark against the voice acting is the lack of diverse ranges for Tav. There is absolutely, no appropraite voices for raging half-orc barbarians or gruff cantankerous dwarves.
@@nerddotcom5817 The closest to that is honestly voice 7. Bit hot damn, voice 1 goes utterly ham with the barbarian rage.
@@Spiralpaladin voice 1's barb rage goes so hard but its so funny that its easily the youngest sounding voice.. chose it for my half orc barb once that looked like he hated the world and yeah it was a bit odd at times 🤣
This is my favorite game ever made but I recently replayed Dragon Age Origins. And the voice acting in that is also top notch, entirely on par with BG3. In my opinion anyway.

The fact that if you ask the Incubus how good Raphael is in bed and it laughs at your question before flatly saying "no" was already gold.
Getting to use that knowledge to insult him as your choice of last words had me actually leave the computer and stomping around in circles laughing. Not because it was particularly funny, but because Larian even let you do that in the first place.
@@FiendMatadorSlayerOfNoobs Let's be real for a moment. You KNOW the writers *at a minimum* have a deep love for actually role playing, because BG3 lets you do SO SO MUCH bullshit that "only players do" that can frustrate GMs.
I love how he always gets more and more red when you piss him off. His reaction when you tell him he lasts seconds in bed is so good.
If you interrogate his corpse, you can also find out that Raphael is a bottom. Only ever takes it. Always below, never above.
Always on bottom. Never top.
There's only one thing better than listening to Raphael sing his own theme music:
Hitting him with Otto's Irresistible Dance so he turns it into a full-on Disney musical number.

The fact that this whole section of the game is OPTIONAL blows my mind.
I absolutely loved the game at this point already, but the House of Hope blew me away.
When Raphael showed up I doubted my decisions. It felt like a boss battle you were meant to lose, so it felt epic when the music kicked in, actually being able to beat him in the end.
Especially since he has the hammer, which is needed for the true ending
Everything is optional lol
I am also pretty confident that this is THE hardest boss fight in the game. The Netherbrain is no pushover by any means, but it was an absolute breeze compared to Raphaels constant bombardment of high level spells
House of hope was probably one of my favorite side quests in the game
@paulenan9636 If you save Hope she has Divine Intervention which allows a Heal as if your characters Full Rested and revives downed teammates to half.
Made cleaning all the adds a breeze.
You'll all notice in your next playthtough the first time he summons you to the house of hope this plays instrumentally in the background. What a fucking banger.
Yep, on my second playthrough that's exactly what happened. I hadn't noticed at all the first time I played, but on the second playthrough I couldn't miss it.
The instrumental plays in the background of his room above Sharess's Caress too.
I chuckled when I saw that Raphael had 666 hp. Nice one, Larian.
It was a nice touch. I really like how everyone who live in his home went through their consequences for making a deal with Raphael and how they were so scared they wouldn't dare talk loud

Whoever wrote Raphael's character and voiced it definitely needs a raise. This is how you create a evil character that is actually loved by the players. Pure charisma.
Raphael and Gaunter O'Dimm is at the top to be the best vilains, in any games.

The reason he gives you so much time to prepare by ambushing you at the exit was because he had to figure out the lyrics and fit in "true soul" and "detected and caught".
Im pretty sure theres a line in act 2 where raph says something like "i practiced until it was perfect"
He left some blanks written in to addlib, depending on when he actually got to sing it.
You can find his lyrics sheet in his bedroom. He has been writing the song for the whole game.

That’s funny-I finished him with a Magic Missile at the end of a marathon battle. It came down to the team holding him off while my Dark Urge used an Angelic Slumber potion

Raphael’s voice actor went all in and it paid off. Every scene he is in he steals the show 10/10 performance🙏
by far the best character, next to Mizora. In fact, I think all devils are insanely well made.

they're lawful creatures in nature, and you need to be able to write charisma in order to convey their games

When this music started playing I couldn't stop myself from laughing but I quickly came to the realization that I was suddenly no longer the main character of the story-but merely a bit player in _Raphael: The Musical._
I have never experienced this kind of epicness in a video game ever. Big shout out for the devs, brilliant composer and amazing vocals.

If you haven't played Wasteland 3 I highly recommend it, there's a moment like this early on in the game. But ya BG3 did fantastic this fight was so epic and the music was perfection. I was playing with my brother-in-law and I had to mute the mic because I was laughing so hard. Turns out his music was muted so I made him load this youtube so he could expirience it too.
The only thing that comes close is the waltz in Bioshock 1, where you are suddently forced to move with the rythm to evade the attacks of the enemies rushing in. ^^ Also comes out of nowhere and hits you right in the nerves.
Yeah. my mind was blown for real. Really cool to see, beautiful music, thank you so much for making such an incredible soundtrack!

For me it was the opposite, he was unable to act even once in the entirety of the fight on normal difficulty. He was completely unable to break my Warlocks "Hold Monster" on him for the enirety of his 666 HP. That is what 14 Wisdom does.

Fighting raphel as a Paladin was the most epic fight I’ve ever had especially when I’m wielding the giant slayer, the legendary sword of Balduran as I fought the literal devil with my holy powers, it’s never felt so epic in a video game before

@@Ty-v6v-c4r It's a reaction, and as such, cannot be used if another reaction was already used that turn. Bait it out with an Attack of Opportunity and then wail on his ass at your leisure.
@@Ty-v6v-c4rmy solution was to create an invulnerability zone and put everyone in it. Effectively nullified their attempt to prevent usage kf divine intervention.
If you like this type of thing then I recommend pathfinder: wrath of the righteous.
I just started a silver dragonborn paladin run and that's the fight I'm most looking forward to

This solidified Raphael as probably my favorite antagonist from BG3. The fact this man is so self absorbed that he not only has his own theme song but that he SINGS his own theme music in his boss fight. He's the guy you love to hate and I was so glad to have chosen to fight him in my first run. Definitely one of my favorite fights when this music kicked in

I was absolutely in AWE when this started playing. I had NO IDEA what I was in for and I was just SCREAMING when Raphael went full classic Disney villain. LOVED IT!!! MASTERPIECE!!!!
Especially because if you manage the battle right he's just about as weak as a Disney Villain when it comes time to actually fight, too.
The entire House of Hope sequence is just a classic Disney movie (with extra spice), and it's just perfect

The moment you see Raphael with 666 hp oneshotting half of your party and his epic solo playing in the background. Holy shit dude, this is one the best boss fights ever.
Yeah most games coddle you. Sure you're fighting a being that ought to be godlike compared to you but there there here's your plot armour. Raphael just nukes everything and laughs in 666 hit points.
Too bad he can be stunned way too easy he should be immune or have like some buff where stuns only last 1 turn on him.
@@Taskuli12 eh I disagree. most people won't even think to use those stuns until it's plastered over 90 youtube guides saying to. That's the fun of dnd/bg3 in my opinion. Encounters are as easy or as hard as you make them using the tools acquired. It makes a player feel clever when they do find that loophole to an otherwise difficult encounter.
@@IAmKry But its not dnd where you have only 1 try to do the encounter. They can make it lot harder ON TACTICIAN mind you it was not even funny how easy the fight was when boss literally does nothing whole fight.

The quality of the production is insane. The fact that they made such an amazing song for just this ONE encounter ? Amazing. It really made it feel like I was fighting a real battle for my soul.
The only thing missing was him teleporting in an organ operated by a goblin to play it..
Take notice that every encounter is special and unique. There are plenty of unique enemies you're going to fight only once
to be fair its an archdevil on the other hand I'm a bit miffed that you can fight and win. Thats usually not something a lvl 12 party could take on.

Everything about this is fucking fantastic. The build-up of Raphael from Act One to his conclusion here in Act Three. I love how the vocals at the beginning establish an uncanny sense of dread - a reminder that you are fighting a FUCKING DEVIL in his own house! Which is then followed by Raphael's narcissistic Disney-villain-esque singing. Everything was so masterfully done, so expertly and carefully crafted, and I'm so proud of Larian for what they accomplished here as a huge fan since Divinity Original Sin 2. You guys fucking rock. :O

This is unequivocally one of the most hard hitting pieces in the whole game. Once the fight started and this began to play, I stopped what I was doing and just took in the music. Such a haunting piece almost to remind you as the player that you are seriously outgunned and outmatched and this will be a fight for your life.

There's a really similar moment in Wasteland 3 - for that and this, not even the final boss fight of the game but it's one of the most epic moments because of the buildup and the unexpected soundtrack. Loved this moment so much. Raphael is definitely one of my favorite characters.
The whole soundtrack is amazing but I gotta admit that this one hit different.. I think it the build up to this moment from the very first time you meet him (and all that happened since) that make it so special.
This is a moment that i've been dying to talk to my friends about but they've not gotten to it lol. the buildup, the stage being set, the cambions coming in suddenly and then BAM the vocals hit and i'm like "holy shit this is NOT where i thought this quest would end up going" lol
I think the best part of this is that when you explore the House of Hope, you can find the lyrics to this song written down on a piece of paper showing that he was working on it.

I never knew a CRPG boss fight would make me feel like I have front-row seats to one of the most breathtaking, cinematic and mastercrafted gaming moments in recent years.
My thoughts exactly
The house of hope is the best bit of gaming ive seen in a very long time. Getting into house of hope, exploring it, things go south, you fight your way to hope and back out again only to meet the devil himself. you are already low on spellslots and actions and than then hardest part yet comes. This song plays. Was truly done masterfully.
If you explored at all then you would have max spell slots. In raphaels rooms there are two fountains that full rest you, and you can use them infinitely. I used them to summon a massive army of summons@@lillesuper
It's a different kind of game, as it is a tactic woth some roguelike element, but if you want to relive this sensation, try Othercide, it has some really epic bossfights and OST (the only "bad thing is when the game gets REALLY good it just ends 😢)

I just did this fight last night. I was FLOORED when the music started. When raphael started singing i just stopped playing all together and just stared at my screen. I could not believe it. Goosebumps.
It was a narrow victory for my party. Thank the gods I saw that hope had divine intervention and was able to revive most of my party.
This game is probably the best i have ever played.
I think so many of us older gamers are constantly chasing that feeling we had as kids where video games made us feel a deep thrumming of emotions and excitement. For me this boss fight did that for me for the first time in well over a decade. I put so much work into getting to the point and then being given a fight that was maniacally hard but winnable with enough strategy, and then accompanying it with this song… I sat up and smiled so much during the whole experience. I’ll never forget this moment in gaming ever.
A game that still surprises 70 hours in I was the same - the music was so good here I just sat back and thought "...Damn" So good.

Congratulations on your well deserved BAFTA award!!! I post here because, while your entire soundtrack was amazing, this track had such an impact upon me. It made me smile the widest grin and I simply couldn't do anything but listen. I have 5 playthroughs of BG3, completed honor mode, and every single time this song in this moment is what I always look forward to experiencing again and again.
Truly this is a work of artistic passion, and the entire soundtrack deserves to be recognized. No, YOU deserve to be recognized because your work is such an integral part of a seminally profound gaming experience.

The lady’s voice at the beginning hooked me instantly. When the organ started, I began smiling like an idiot. But when Raphael’s voice kicked in, I immediately knew this was special. Probably my favorite moment in this game. Absolutely blew me away. This game needs every GOTY award available. ::shout out to TOTK, tho.::

Hearing this song for the first time in-game was such an epic experience. I wonder how many people got stopped in their tracks like me, mesmerized by the music. It cannot be overstated how awesome of a job you guys did creating this soundtrack. I feel like it took a game that was already 10/10 up to an 11/10.

This song exemplifies attention to detail and exceeding all expectations. It is perfect on so many levels. Even the buildup as you approach the boss battle, a hint of the theme playing almost in the background as you get closer, and once you enter you get this song and hellfire to the face! An absolute masterpiece!

I also thought it was cool that they didn’t just give us the stereotypical underground cave with lava rivers hell aesthetic. Larian gave us a proper devil’s house with so much detail. There’s even a portal room, room of pleasure, and other knick knacks.
I didn't realize how scary Raphael was until I met the NPCs living in the House of Hope.

I was absolutely flabbergasted, the music itself made house of hope one of the most memorable experiences in the game
I never thought I'd vibe the hardest with a musical as background music for a combat encounter, but here I am... wait it wasn't a 'mere' background music, it was the SOUL of this encounter.

Absolutey my favorite fight so far. Knowing the stakes just kept ramping until this point, after stumbling into the House of Hope and pissing off Rafael.
This was the most epic moment ive EVER had in a game. I can't even explain it
Having all the characters tell you how dangerous the house of hope was going to be. And then arriving at the house of hope and seeing all of the creepy maimed NPCs. NPCs worshipping a bucket of poop, NPCs running around on all fours barking, NPCs mutilating themselves, a humans mind trapped inside of a rats body It all really set the stage for how awful Raphael was, he wasn't the charming gentleman he always seemed to be, he is the embodiment of human sin. And you are about to rob him, you are in incredible danger.
As I was progressing through the house of hope I kept thinking "Oh shit, maybe I bit off more than I could chew, something bad is going to happen"
Freeing hope and running to that portal, only to have Raphael appear at the last minute was a genuinely terrifying experience, they had built him up as such an incredibly terrifying powerful character. I almost wanted to surrender to him and try to talk my way out of it. Talking his general into joining me made me get out of my seat and clap. And then firmly telling him I wanted to kill him since we first met set the stage for this beautiful fight.
When this music dropped, I just leaned back in my chair and got goosebumps. A game had NEVER made me feel that level of epicness ever, when Raphael comes in and starts singing too, you really feel like you are in HIS game. There are no words. Thank you Larian for this masterpiece.

I don't know how you managed to get a straight up villain song as a boss soundtrack, but I was actually applauding while getting curb stomped by this esteemed gentleman. This is a masterwork.
Speaking of getting curb stomped, a Cleric, a Paladin, a Fighter, and a Rogue walk into that...I also had a Deva with me too, and the extra help you can find.
Luckily my Paladin had a 1d6 or 1d8 Holy Damage on their attacks, so I could pop the holy reflect and then Divine Smite them to death. I had to use two Scrolls of Globe Invuln to survive long enough to break all the pillars.
Was a hilariously brutal fight.
@@Dark3nedDragon You can put a character with the Hammer next to a pillar, it does 40+ damage to a pillar. The adamantine mace (if you crafted that) can also do tons of damage to them.
@@Dark3nedDragon Hold Monster is super effective on Raphael! He only broke out of it once :D And all hits are crits on a target affected by a Hold spell.
you can also ignore the pillars. i kited him back in the corridor so my main char (ranger) and shadowheart can hide behind stuff while monk does what monk do best: stunning strike :D (yes, it took ages)@@Dark3nedDragon
just hold monster for 10 turns and you have plenty of times to kill minions and towers and him...

@@Azumgi Yeah I have to say I am extremely unsatisfied with the Baals chosen ending. I played my character in a way that they succumbed more and more to the urge. I mostly suppressed it throughout act 1 and leaned fully into it in act 3. I loved the Dark urge story and am really happy I chose it instead of a blank custom character. But the ending is just so underwhelming because it´s to short. An altered scene of the Withers monologue or or maybe a speech of Baal himself to give proper closure is very much missing. It feels more like a: "You failed! Try again!" ending and not something I actively chose.
A true narcissist to the end.
Granted the final line of dialouge was the funniest in the game for me. I asked harlepp how raphael was in bed. Not long apparently. When Raphael asks if you have any last words. You can respond with "ill finish you twice as gast as harlepp. The sneer on his gave is priceless before he rages. Beautiful little line to get under his visage of perfection.
He wasn't such a bad dude though. He always maintained his side of the contract and people entered them willingly. Compared to my main character who uses force any time they don't get their way.

Spoilers for Act II
He sabotaged the Selunite Mason’s contract, by giving one of the Dark Justiciars in the Gauntlet the “transform into rats” spell.
This meant Yurgir (sent by Raphael to kill the Sharrans) couldn’t actually complete the job and that’s why he’s trapped when you get there.
The Selunite Mason gave his soul to Raphael in exchange for Raphae killing all of the Sharrans.

I came prepared. Full hp, all spellslots, heroes' feast buff, two dewas summoned, backpack full of arrows of fiend slaying, many hold monster scrolls, saved Hope, slayed Ansur yesterday.
And when this started playing I really felt like I made a grave mistake. What a masterpiece.
This was definitely a highlight in video gaming history.
I love how the vibe of the song really paints Raphael as the main character, like we the party are just another minor inconvenience in his epic tale. Truly a larger than life villain.
The best part about this boss fight was that he's literally laying down a diss track while you fight him
Fighted Raphael just yesterday and as soon as this theme played I felt like "holy crap I'm done for". Truly chilled down my spine.
Same story, buddy. When this song started playing and I saw how many fat demons Raphael had brought with him, I realized: I’m fucked. However, I noticed in time that Hope heals everyone at once and 30 HP at a time, I had (haha) hope for victory. Thanks to Hope and a small (large) Savescam, in which literally every step had to be perfect, I was able to defeat them all (it also turned out that I had a long rest potion, which I used on Lae'zel. While she was sleeping, the next 3 turns I diverted attention to myself with the help of Karlach and my character (there was also Gale, but he died almost immediately)

What an incredible ludonarrative experience to have a enemy so strong (and so narcissistic) that he sings in its own boss battle. That was a genius idea. I was smiling the whole fight.
Just finished this fight, and all I can say is wow. The build up was already fantastic, but when the fight started and this music kicked in? Absolutely speechless. I couldn't help but completely stop to listen with my jaw wide open. Well done Larian and Borislav, this was a boss fight to remember!

For me it was the opposite, he was unable to act even once in the entirety of the fight on normal difficulty. He was completely unable to break my Warlocks "Hold Monster" on him for the enirety of his 666 HP. That is what 14 Wisdom does.@@Sordman

I can't believe I won in tactician difficulty. The House of Hope was a nightmare to navigate. Some fireball creatures chased and attacked me. Two giant monsters with eyes shot multiple paralysis spells at my party members. An army of explosive demons followed soon after, making the journey an emotional rollercoaster. I stood my ground with Yurgir and Hope amidst a swarm of devils in the finale against Raphael.
I always believed I was skilled in the game, but this battle has humbled me. The music, ambience, and explosions created an intense atmosphere, and the divine intervention in the most critical moment left me in awe.
I did it on Honor just recently with the additional difficulty of playing multiplayer. Had to pop two character's Divine Interventions in that one (one was a NPC).
There have been two devil like characters that will always remain in my memory. One is Gaunter O’Dimm from the Witcher and the other is Raphael. Two extremely well written characters with kick ass music.
tbh Gaunter is probably more sinister than a devil if you read his initials. (and yes, I very very muh do believe that theory to be correct)

I was able to beat him in my second try but first impressions matters most. God bless Hope coming in clutch asf...she gave me hope to survive lol. I'll say that Larian Studios was the second to make me feel intimidated in real life...mass effect being the first. BG3 is def game of the year for years to come...if not I'll personally feel offended.

I'm late to the party, but yeah. This is only second to One Winged Angel, it's THAT GOOD. Absolutely insane, I'm so, so happy I decided to do this quest.
How to be a great villian:
Step 1: Have shakespherian inspirations
Step 2: have elegant style
Step 3: sing your own opera theme
This fight was more hype than all bosses combined with BG3 bosses, god I loved it so much. The build up, the warnings, the threats, the stakes, everything was perfect
And then you hit him with Hold Monster, Tasha's, or Otto's, and he's hilariously easy to put down.
He has a ton of HP, his magic and attacks hit hard. But his saves are just sad.

Something people haven’t mentioned as much is the fantastic instrumentation. Orchestra and organ is one of my favorite underused combinations.
And it completely fits Raphael, both as a devil and as a well read, theatric loving..well...handsome devil
I absolutely love the Organ. Organs fit so well for devils, with the more regal sound that they have. This whole soundtrack--and that character for that matter--are just so goddamned perfect.

This moment in the game solidified this as quite possibly my favorite in video game memory. And I've been playing the early 90s. The voice actor singing was so awesome.

Raphael singing his own theme was the biggest twist for me in the game 😂 I laughed so hard when I hear it, stopped playing and just listened. Whole game and soundtrack is a work of genius but this is whole another level. Gave me some Tim Burton & Danny Elfman kinda vibes.

This song transported me like never before. The moment it starts is just perfect. The voices are magnificent, the instruments are beautiful, the change in rhythm. Everything is perfect. I hadn't listened to such emotive music in so many years, thank you for everything, thank you for allowing me to hear this masterpiece in my lifetime. Keep it up, and please shower us with more masterpieces like this, lol. You've set the bar so high that I'm afraid I'll have to wait several years to hear another composition as good.
