Like many folks of my generation, I was first introduced to this song during the culminating scene of the film “Jerry Maguire.” In truth - that ostinato is so captivating, that it probably could’ve suited most any dramatic movie scene.
I’d first arranged this one as a traditional chord melody, but giving it some further thought; I decided that a more interesting way
to favor Bruce’s mesmeric ostinato would be to set the piece within an open tuning.
I paired the verses down to two sets of lyrics that resonated the most with me, and then began singing the phrases into a reworked melodic line.
I sent my voice note demo over to Charles with more than a little embarrassment, since my singing is not very good looking…but I wasn’t surprised at all that he showed up completely owning what I’d envisioned for the piece.
What more can you say? Charles is a singular singer and musician. Enjoy.
