  • A heart-pounding combination of action, music and incredible aerial photography helped make Top Gun the blockbuster hit. of 1986. Top Gun takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy's prestigious fighter weapons school. Tom Cruise is superb as Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a daring young flyer who's out to become the best. And Kelly McGillis sizzles as the civilian instructor who teaches Maverick a few things you can't learn in a classroom.
Actors: Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt

Love your GENUINE reactions!! I grew up on a dairy farm next door to you in Minnesota. I became a Navy fighter pilot for 20 years (1973-94) and went to TOPGUN also. Flew and instructed in Maverick's jet, the F-14 when it was brand new, for almost 2,000 hours. Also flew Viper/Jester's jet, the A-4, for 1,000 hours. Trained the fleet F-14 and F-18 aircrews in the art of aerial combat, and as an LSO, in the art of carrier landings. Made 4 seven to nine month long Mediterranean cruises on aircraft carriers during Libyan and Lebanon tensions and missions against those entities. Garnered almost 500 carrier arrested landings. Was also a Southwest Airlines pilot for 30 years. I bring up my history just for perspective in my reaction to watching the layman's reaction to this movie, and because of this weekend (May 27-30). Almost all reactions are similar to yours, but yours is SO heartfelt to a step above level -- and you allow for the movie's sound and dialogue to get through most of the time (which some others do not while constantly talking over it). I just watched the new "TOPGUN: Maverick" movie sequel today at the grand opening at the Cinema... great movie. In this original TOPGUN movie, Viper says after telling Maverick that "Goose is dead... there will be others..." That is so true. With Memorial Day weekend here now, I remember those "others." The number of those I knew in the Naval Aviation community who died in just non-combat peace-time aircraft accidents numbers almost 30... and half of those were real good friends. Lots of funerals. I hope, in these turbulent social times, that everyone will remember those military fallen -- like Goose; because... "All gave some... some gave all."

When this movie came out on VHS (yes, VHS), we lived in a world of big box, projection TV's, VCR's, and component stereo systems to enhance the sound. For many years, the dogfight scene at the end of this movie was my standard for evaluating these systems -- TV's, VCR's, and sound. Once I had the system together, I'd re-watch the scene to evaluate my setup.

Also, Top Gun was one of the first movies "priced to own" when it came out on home video. Before this movie the average cost of a movie on VHS or Beta was around $90. Back then what usually happened was video stores would buy the movies and everyone else usually just rented from them.
But Christmas season of 1986 Top Gun came out on video and was only $27.95!!! I remember everyone talking about how amazing it was you could get last summer's hottest movie at such an affordable price. So it became one of the top Christmas gifts that year and set the trend for Hollywood movies coming out on home video to be so affordable. It was the beginning of owning movies on home video becoming a much bigger thing. Studios kept trying to outdo one another and kept lowering the prices of their new releases until it settled at $19.95 which became pretty much the standard price for movies coming out on videocassette for a good while.

Yes VHS and VCRs! The 80s. No internet no smartphones everything was simpler less wrecks people weren't addicted to social medias like they are now. Great time. Cool thing about this film is all the aerial footage was real with couple scenes where they use models and stuff but for the most part the opening scene to me is the best opening scene in any movie ever made it's all real footage from an aircraft carrier. In the music was perfect. The way those catapults sling those Jets off that deck at 0 to 16 0 miles per hour with a seconds is amazing and how they have to land with the hooks. I'm assuming if they missed they have to take off and circle around but. All that footage in the beginning is real the steam is from the catapult system that slings them off the deck it looks so cool in the background. Love this movie watch it again recently getting ready for the Maverick movie

I am not sure anyone clarified yet.
When you fly through the "jet wash", you are passing through the exhaust trail of another jet aircraft.
Unlike rocket planes, which carry both the fuel and oxidizer on board, Jet aircraft carry only the fuel, and use air intakes to provide the oxidizer. This is why they can only fly so high, as without air to "breathe", your engine will not work. The positive trade-off is, you save all the weight and space of oxidizer tanks.
So, with that information, the exhaust trail a jet leaves behind is deprived of all the oxygen it breathed in to provide the catalyst for its fuel reaction. So flying through it chokes your intakes because there is no oxygen to take in, and the fuel reaction stops, causing your engine to quit.
What makes matters worse is, the exhaust trail is also turbulent, so it thrashes your plane about.
The only real way to recover from an engine flame out is to give your intakes a nice big gulp of fresh air while you restart your engine, BUT you have to be in controlled forward flight in order to accomplish this. Generally the best thing to do is go into a shallow dive, increasing your glide speed and drawing deeper breaths.
However, if while flying through the turbulence, you lose control of your plane and it starts to spin, you no longer have the controlled forward motion, and your intakes are not getting proper in-flow, so your engine cannot restart. Your only way of recovering is with your wing flaps alone... which become completely useless if you are falling belly first or inverted.
This is also why jet aircraft cannot go too high, as when the air is too thin for the intakes to draw sufficient oxygen for the engine, you flame out. And with air so thin that your flaps have little to no control, ending up in an unrecoverable flat spin is more likely. I believe this even happened to Chuck Yeager, years after he famously broke the sound barrier.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 2 года назад +6

@@mattarnold198 While that can make sense for cargo planes and passenger liners… In fact I believe some airliners even have some thing to that effect as part of the APU, auxiliary power unit, but I may be wrong
But for a fighter jet where maneuverability and reduction of weight to allow it to carry more ordinance, such a thing would only be a hindrance. Especially when it only guards against a single very rare type of instance

    • @Jinn174
      @Jinn174 2 года назад

Good explanation, but I think you are confusing flaps with ailerons, also a duel engine flameout, you would lose the hydraulic pumps from each engine which provide power to the flying controls, so the pilot would be fighting the spin using the cables to the controls without any hydraulic assistance, the hydraulics provide about 50x the power a person can do just using cables and pullies, now imagine a flat spin without hydraulics and the g forces involved and trying to push the rudder pedal to counter it.

Top Gun is my favourite film of all time, so it’s great seeing a lot of people reacting to it here on RUclips. Your enjoyment of this film really brought a smile to my face.
One thing I’ve realised now through watching others experience Top Gun, more than I did before, is the writers definitely made a conscious choice to make Goose the most likeable character, he wasn’t just Maverick’s best friend and voice of reason, he was everyone’s favourite person. His death impacts everyone, not just the characters in film, but the watching audience too.
Fun fact: during filming the carrier scenes, the USS Enterprise was on operational duty and had to follow a charted course. The scenes were being lit by the sun rising in the background, but due to the course they were taking they were losing the lighting, so director Tony Scott asked the ship’s CO if they could turn and keep the sun rise in the shot for a little bit longer. When he was told it would cost $25k to do so, he pulled out his personal chequebook and wrote it out on the spot (although rumour is he made sure it bounced). We ended up with, in my opinion, the best opening scene ever.
Top Gun released in 1986, but a lesser known ‘sister’ film came out the same year - Iron Eagle. It’s slightly cheesier, less realistic, but a whole load of fun with an equally great soundtrack (including “One Vision” by Queen).

I've probably seen it over 50 times, so the empathy involved was high but I was having a hard time because of his expectation set for 'action romance' rather thatn military-drama (of which a romance is a part) - what makes a movie drama or action isn't the surface happening exclusively, but how it serves the narrative, here all 'action' is drama (not dramatic, as action tends to always be, but 'drama in motion, through action that is active'.) Similarly, action movies can have drama elements (obviously the mmore meaningful the action the more the drama elements work), but it doesn't at all make them drama movies. Like, in no way are Die Hard or Lethal Weapon drama genres, they are action movies, with drama elements that make the action meaningful. It's mostly about writing+direcing focus, and I supposecan be hard to distinguish for those not well-versed (which is mostly a surprise to me, as I never heard Top Gun as an action movie, or like, Silence of the Lambs as horror[it's investigative crime-drama with thriller elements, not horror elements.])

Welcome to the movie, that makes grown soldiers emotional. Loosing a close comrade like goose is tough, and it just goes to show that the writing and setup really hits you, since "goose" is a common nickname to give close buddies in the military.
Also thank you for your shoutout to servicemen in the start of the video.
Its a rare thing for military personel to get where im from, so i just wanted to say that it was much appreciated. Been serving for 16 years, and proud to be an ally.

To put it another way, I don't remember taking them off, or having to put them back on after taking them off for some reason. During leave, yes. Maybe the higher-ups considered living and working on the airbase a hazardous environment.

Not sure if anyone has answered this question, but if you are in uniform the dog tags are part of the uniform. We actually had dog tags in our left boot as well (U.S. Marines). Our MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) had an unofficial rule that if you had your dog tags tattooed on you, you didn't have to wear your dog tags. I thought that was fair enough, we already have it in our boot, the around the neck was redundant (also all of the name tags on our camis). The dog tags bothered my chest when pressed against sappy plates (bullet proof plates). So, I got my dog tag information tattooed on the left side of my chest. I knew a dozen guys that got that tattoo as well. I also knew a couple that got the foot one. There is also a red dog tag for medical allergies. Things change, but this was the standard at Camp Lejeune and OIF circa 2004-2008. YAT-YAS OORAH

She a big name actress when this movie was filmed but is one now. On May 27, 2022 will be the premier of the new Top Gun movie that looks awesome. It’s not a remake of this one but it takes place 30 plus years after the first on. It is called Top Gun: Maverick. I worked on the special effects in this film. We just blew up 7 foot model planes (still had the remains of a MiG hanging on the wall in our model shop), we did the tracer bullets and our animation department did the targeting computer/firing display. Tons of fun. While filming, we used an old P.T. boat fogger from WWII to simulate clouds and got in huge "trouble" with the subdivision of snooty Bay Area types for making their neighborhood "too smokey". They were a bunch of HOA Karen's before there was such a thing. We told them to "F off" as we had permits and the backing of the local P.D.
My pants get tight every time I here that deep bell and the music start-up at the beginning. If you ever need to dial in the sound system for your home theater, THAT'S the movie you do it to. Problem is....you'll end up watching the whole movie and then the wife comes in and hollers at you for goofing around😁!

I sincerely hope you have gone to see Top Gun Maverick in theaters by now and if not, you need to. It's still playing in theaters but only for another week or so. This is a film that was made for the big screen and the nostalgic call backs to the original will give a serious case of the feels. Plus Tom insisted that the flying sequences had to be real, no CGI so the actors went through 3 months of training to be able to handle being up in the jets while they're doing all the crazy flying. Check out some of the trailers or the behind the scenes featurettes. It's incredible. Top Gun Maverick should be the blueprint for how sequals should be made.

The Hornet is also one of the sexiest jets ever! So sleek and perfect. Bad things do occasionally happen though. A "Blue" went down at an airshow some years back in Beaufort SC. He was losing consciousness and control, but was able to ditch the F/A-18 to a field next to a small street. Instead of ejecting, he stayed with the jet to ensure no one on the ground was hurt. The carrier in this film is a Nimitz class, they are being phased out and replaced by the Gerald R. Ford class. Goose's wife is Meg Ryan. Cute as a button! Definitely check her out in Inner Space (with Dennis Quaid and Martin Short), Joe Vs the Volcano (with Tom Hanks), and French Kiss (with Kevin Kline).
Top Gun was directed by the late Tony Scott, brother of Ridley. He has a very iconic directing style, and has quite a few movies worth watching in his filmography.
And now that you've seen Top Gun, it's time for Hot Shots, a parody starring Charlie Sheen.

Meg Ryan was known as Americas Sweet Heart for several years and was at the top of the list for romantic comedies. See When Harry Met Sally, Joe vs Volcano, Youve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, etc...Then she faded away, had some bad plastic surgery, and now we dont see her anymore.

That's sad, why do people do plastic stuff.

I can't believe I found this wonderful channel. You're just a joy to watch. I subbed immediately. I was dreading for you the part where Goose died.
I have a movie suggestion for you that I think you'd love. It's called "Tombstone". It's a western about Wyatt Earp, his brothers and Doc Holiday. It really is fantastic. Give it a whirl.

Tom Cruise sounds familiar. Wow! Biggest star of the 90s. I know now you really didn't see many movies. I was in Air Force stationed in Korea when this came out. They showed it on all military base theaters.

I’ve been fortunate enough to walk around several US Naval museums I believe the aircraft Carrier you were trying to remember was the USS midway which was an aircraft carrier that came out at the end of World War II. I also visited the museum in Hawaii I teared up at yeah USS Arizona and was on the battleship USS Missouri. Remembering stories told to me by my grandparents my murder‘s parents were on the island of Hawaii when the Japanese attacked. My grandmother was in the Queen Alexandria‘s Royal Army nursing corps, she was sent over with a small detachment of British in order to teach the American nurses what to expect in trauma situations and the best ways to deal with it. My grandfather flew with 19 squadron and was well-versed in dogfighting as he flew the British spitfire he was sent to teach the American pilots tactics and manoeuvres when in dogfighting. So both my mothers parents were sent to Hawaii for a two month training course where they taught the Americans before they were due to enter the war. My dad‘s parents were also involved my dad‘s mother drove supply trucks for the British army and my dad‘s father was a navy gunner in the Royal Navy and later became a sardine which I’m told it’s a slang term for sailors in a submarine.

One of the extras in the background singing with Maverick was my actual Air Boss. He could be a bit...moody during flight ops. And the scene with the 2nd coffee scene, the guy carrying the tray is enlisted, senior enlisted, Petty Officer 1st Class to be exact. Meaning he would have had someone junior to him PO3 and below, carry a tray of coffee.
