I watched the original so many times growing up. This movie totally nailed all the call backs and emotions one would hope for in a sequel 30 years down the road. As I get older, the are times where it feels like life is starting to wind down. Between this movie and watching Han Solo die, it really makes one reflect on how fast life passes by.

Regarding the youngins knowing the words to Great Balls of Fire: I assumed they learned it from Rooster as he was paying homage to his dad, and it eventually became their "go to" song.

Great reaction, and most of us who loved the original teared up throughout this movie. I know I did.
The P-51 Mustang in Maverick's personal hanger is his own personal airplane. He also pushed hard to have the F-18 cockpit scenes shot in actual backseats of cockpits being flown by skilled pilots. As I saw him say in an interview, there's no way to "act" the G-forces effect on the body, the breathing, the skin of the face being pulled, etc. All the movie pilots had to go through an intense training course that involved hours in the second seats of actual F-18s so they would know what they were in for. They also had to be responsible for having the cameras set and rolling, fixing their makeup and everything in the shot. They'd take off, do their scenes, then land and hand the film over to the director so he could FINALLY see what they had gotten. Hard to direct when you're grounded. LOL.
As others have likely said, Penny is mentioned in the first movie, so it was an established pre-existing relationship. I've heard that in earlier drafts of the movie more relationship background was included but removed for being unnecessary to advance the plot. And the relationship was essential to the story. Seeing her reaction in scenes added depth. She knew the story of Goose and understood the haunted look during the Balls of Fire scene at the bar. She also showed his growth as a character too. After Goose died he tried to handle his trauma himself, and it didn't go well. By now he had finally learned that having someone to rely on for comfort and help in tough times wasn't weak, it was needed, and Penny showed that growth. She also was someone he could confide in, and was how we finally learned the real reason behind why Mav and Rooster had such an acrimonious relationship. And that scene with her also showed Mav's loss of his arrogance as he took all Rooster's anger on himself. Plus, Amelia's comment to him after he jumped out of Penny's window was another hammer blow to the feels.
Also, in a way, he needed Penny for his survival. As Admiral Cain implied early on, Mav seemed to have a deathwish. All he had left was Rooster, and Rooster hated him, so Mav kept taking risks that would have eventually killed him because he had nothing else but being a Navy pilot and he knew that he was skating on thin ice there. He wouldn't actually commit suicide, but he'd keep skating on thinner and thinner ice just to see how far he could get before he broke through.
Hangman is Maverick without the restraint provided by Goose. F-18s were two seaters standard from the start, but as technology improved and training improved F-18s and other fighter planes were built more and more as single seat planes as the backseat RIO/weapons officer wasn't necessary except on some missions where the pilot needed to focus exclusively on flying. In the F-14s Maverick had to think about Goose's safety, especially as Goose was not just his best friend but his only family since Mav's parents were both dead. Goose generally kept Mav from going too far with the risks he'd take to prove himself as something more than Duke Mitchell's kid. As a single seat pilot, Hangman had no restraints and so he'd push himself and in the process hang everyone else out in the wind to dry or die. But it was their fault for not being as good as he was.
In an earlier script Hangman was going to be Iceman's son. I'm so damn glad they scrapped that too. I've also read that the actor who played Hangman had apparently tested for Rooster. He lost out to Miles Teller of course, but he had impressed the producers so much that they expanded the role of Hangman specifically so he could play it.
I liked how the various actors had cues so that, even though we didn't get any backstory, we could get a sense of the backstory of them. Phoenix and Rooster being actual friends and Bob being so shy and such a wallflower that he had done nothing to earn a callsign with a story behind it being prime examples.
Also it amused me that Bob was in an F-18 as the actor's father was shown flying an F-18 in the movie Independence Day. Bob being played by Lewis Pullman and his dad being Bill Pullman, who played the President of the U.S. in Independence Day.
Val Kilmer had had a tracheotomy before filming this movie as part of his fight against throat cancer, so he literally couldn't speak. They used a computer program to recreate his voice with harshening elements so he could "speak" a few lines to Maverick. I was so so happy to see him in this. He's always been one of my favorite chameleon actors who can play any role.
Mav sets the wings of the F-14 forward because in that position the plane has more lift due to more wing surface being directly exposed. This aids in takeoffs on shorter runways. Or taxiways. Whichever. The Delta wing formation with the wings in their swept back position decreases drag and permits higher speeds once airborne. Mav shifts the wings back to the forward position in flight to accelerate the braking maneuver as the forward position provides much more drag once airborne.
I loved how they had all these pictures of Goose on Mav's hangar wall, plus the great one in the locker. The addition of the one of Mav and Rooster reenacting the same photo as Mav and Iceman was a nice touch too.
Such a brilliant movie. Hollywood, take note! THIS is what people want to see! Great scripts, great stories, great directing, great acting, and great characters!

"I don't know how he gets away with it." When the overall commander of the Pacific Fleet is your white knight and can cut whatever orders he wants to keep you where he thinks you need to be, you can get away with a lot.
Also, Iceman knows that being a pilot is all Mav has to keep himself going, and Ice wants to keep Mav alive and in the world.
It's funny because people don't seem to realize that Mav is barely holding on from the very beginning of this movie. He has people on his side, people like Ice and Hondo, but he knows that once he's out of the Navy he loses them all because the nature of the military means that people quickly lose contact with those still in once they're out. So he pushes his luck so he can maybe die a Naval aviator.
Thinking of that, it was potentially some grim foreshadowing about Mav getting shot down when he and Rooster are talking after Phoenix and Bob have to eject. "I've never lost a wingman." "Fly long enough and you will."

You talked about “kids” who are Rooster’s age not knowing Jerry Lee Lewis, and from all of the RUclips reactors, I think you are right.
    But …
Who was this movie for? Kids who are Rooster’s age? Or for people who either were Maverick’s age when the first movie came out (or the younger kids at that time who were hooked on this character at a time in our politics where we were going toe-to-toe hard with the USSR)?
These later groups would absolutely remember that song and Jerry Lee Louis. The director put in that song to tie back to movie one AND to take the audience I described back to their feelings from that song at the time.
There are some of us out here who are Maverick’s age, who sat on the East/West German border (I don’t imagine the term “inner border” would mean the same or refer to what we knew) in the snow watching Soviets watching us. But for how miserable we ever were then, I at least would go back eagerly for it in exchange for being considered old and no longer in the game. So while this movie isn’t going to get an Academy Award, it will be strongly popular with some of us.
Incredible reaction. Your intro and your reaction to the football scene started to make me question if I should delete my browser history. 😂

Honestly I think Maverick having a love story makes a lot of sense. Jennifer Connelly's character and plot line were actually essential to the movie. #1, part of this movie's story for Maverick, besides the whole Goose's son plot, is him realizing he can't fly forever... as the Iceman says to him "It's time to let go.". The idea of a life outside of the cockpit, and the Navy, where he settles down with Jennifer Connelly makes it easier for us to root for than the idea of him retiring and just sitting around lonely as shit because he has no family/friends due to his entire life being about flying. #2, without her, all Tom's character is surrounded by is superiors who don't like him, or subordinates he is training. Connelly lets us see the human sides of Maverick, and lets Tom charm it up a bit. Without her we'd just have scenes of superiors or Rooster yelling at Maverick, or Maverick making the rookies look like little bitches in the air... thats it.

Jennifer Connely as "Penny Benjamin" is one of the biggest reminiscent factors of this movie. From the original, about 14 minutes in, Maverick and Goose are getting their asses chewed for not landing the plane to help their wingman Cougar. The Commander said "you've been busted five time, and put in hack by me, for high speed passes over five air control towers, and one Admiral's daughter." Goose then looks at Mav and whispers, "Penny Benjamin?" She was an interest of his from the original, and I thought it was interesting and cool to see how they reincorporated her character. The love scene was romantic and mature love and adoration not the lustful sex scene in the original. Even forgetting that Penny was referenced in the first film, the more adult version of the relationship also plays on the theme of aging and finding your place.

But when I saw this new Maverick movie, it truly blew me away. The way in which they handled the dialogue between Iceman and Maverick was perfect. They knew of Val Kilmer's speech limitations, and the writers scripted a scene that worked well within those limitations. It's what makes the interaction between the characters more poignant, as well as lending emotional weight to the moment.

The story between Maverick and Penny is the most practical thing in the movie for me...people like Maverick sometimes don't realize how much they need people and that's what Penny is to Maverick. Someone that, despite leaving behind over the years, has always been in his thoughts. Maverick is also incredibly skilled in the air and lucky. His character lives on breaking rules and getting bailed out of trouble. Penny is the only person who never bails him out. She makes him face his troubles head on.

Rooster was familiar with "Great Balls of Fire" and it had a special place in his heart because HE WAS THERE that day his dad played it and sang it with Maverick together! In the flashback, you see him sitting on the piano facing his dad while he plays it. And, in a way, he probably plays it as a tribute to his father and finds comfort in playing it, as if he was right there with his father in his childhood again.

Tom bought the plane and had it retrofitted to look like the fighter variant. This required removing the 2 camera pods and replacing fairings, adding the correct gun mounts and replacing the prop with one having the correct amount of blades for the fighter variant among other changes.
The entire history of his plane is in public records. It’s a beautiful restoration, no doubt, and I’m sure it probably performs well.

The love story was finally a 'full circle' for Maverick - something to reward his original character and all of the losses and compromises that he made to be who he was. An opportunity to re-find a soul-mate that he can now embrace and be part of. I'm pleased with the circular karmic perfection offered by that part of the story. Rooster's "hate" of Mav is a reaction of a child to his father being "killed" by the ego of an exceptional pilot/flight partner along with the paternalistic behaviour that results in the delay of a career. Fitting. In terms of the music, I know so many kids who have embraced 'old' music because modern music just doesn't touch one's soul....if the parents are able to expose their kids to the 'old' music classics, they often can't help but appreciate that music. Happy that you loved the movie. Unlike so many sequels, this really brought things home. Formulaic. Truly American. Still, so very satisfying.
