I would argue that for most movie-lovers this one is in top 5 at least. It's as near perfect as a movie can be. Captivating story, incredible actors, good directing and just the right distribution of surprise and feel-good ending you want. Love it. It's mindbogling how many incredible stories originated from the brain of mr. King.
It's now in mine
Couldn’t agree with you more! Forrest Gump I believe also has to be in many ppl’s List of 5 (hee hee- Hello Friends fans😉).
What others would you think? The 6th Sense? Godfather2?
Maybe not Top5 but w the recent loss of James Caan, I’m reminded of what a fantastic film Misery is!!!! Another Stephen King flick.
Going wayyyyy back but Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is a great classic film, though I know that’s a stretch. But a personal fav. Great twist.
Stay safe & love much💖
@@AwesomeUSMovies You have reached the pinnacle of cinema in my humble opinion. Haven't seen a better flick in 35 years on earth.
To each his own. I always thought this was the most overrated movie of all time. It's very good, but so many plot holes and way too unbelievable. Still, a good movie.
@@omgbygollywow What always bugged me was Andy smashed into a poop filled pipe that ended pouring into a crystal clear creek... Just always made me roll my eyes since first watching it.
1) Red's mugshot photo is actually Morgan's son.
2) Red chastized Andy for having a "shitty pipe dream". Andy escaped through a "shitty pipe".
3) Andy hid his rock hammer in the Bible, in the book of "Exodus", which means "exit".
4) The poster of Marilyn Monroe is from the movie, "The Seven Year Itch".
SInce a kid who had to go to catholic school I always loved that the hammer was hidden in the book of Exodus. Made me smile ever since.
"I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living, or get busy dying."
Fun Fact: Raquel Welch, whose One Million Years B.C. (1966) poster plays a significant role in the film, is a big fan of this movie.
Musical Enthusiast Fact: The opera song that Andy Dufresne plays over the loud speakers is "Canzonetta sull'aria" from "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. It was Tim Robbins' idea for Andy to turn up the volume of the record player in the scene.
Human Training Fact: When Andy goes to the library to begin work as Brooks' assistant and Brooks' crow, Jake, is squawking, Tim Robbins had to time his line so that the crow wouldn't squawk over him, since the bird could not be trained to squawk on cue. Robbins was able to time his line perfectly by learning the bird's squawking patterns, for which writer/director Frank Darabont praised him.
Love it
I had that quote at the top of my Geocities webpage way back when. 😂 Fun fact, the young prisoner in the initial “fresh fish” scene who looks a lot like Morgan Freeman is actually his son. That’s also his picture used as a young Red in his parole file.
The reason why this movie is at or near the top of the greatest movie list of almost anyone is that it focuses on undying hope, proper justice, fulfilled dreams and love & friendship -- it resonates with what everyone seems to yearn for in this life. In this movie, these yearnings are fulfilled so the audience (us) feel "whole" after watching this.
This AND the green mile this week? My gosh you’re gonna be mentally exhausted and physically dehydrated by the end of it all. Godspeed, friend. Such great movies. ❤️
Such amazing films
This is a near perfect movie.
LOVED IT!
Near??? 😅
It’s widely regarded as the greatest film ever made.
Hard to find a better one. It's most definitely in my top 5. Tons of rewatchability.
This is a near perfect comment.
This is easily one of the best movies ever made. I've seen it several times and it still blows me away how good it is. Nothing but praise for everyone who worked on this film.
same here
I've always loved the fact that Andy hid the rock hammer at the beginning of Exodus. Such a subtle touch.
agreed
This prison still stands in Mansfield,OH. This was the last movie filmed there and the painting on the walls for the library are still there. Definitely worth a visit and they do a haunted house for it during Halloween
In the book, Red is a red headed white guy which makes his line in the movie “Maybe it’s because I’m Irish” very funny.
love it thanks
LMAO...I love that you predicted that he would be doing all their taxes. I'm also so excited to see your reaction to the library.
Marilyn's poster is from the promos for "Seven Year Itch". She was married to Joe DiMaggio at the time. He was her +1 at the premiere. She wore that dress, found a subway grate, and posed for the paparazzi. When Joe D. maxed out on sharing Marilyn, he asked her to stop and proceed with the night. Marilyn kept mugging for the cameras and Joe D. walked off.
Fuzzy Britches is Raquel Welch from "10000 B.C."
Rita Hayworth is just awesome. I forget what movie that hair flip is from.
Brooks got me too.
Oh got it thanks
@@AwesomeUSMovies Two other things I forgot to include:
1. This movie helped define "obtuse" for me.
2. Men's shoes don't get noticed enough. I complimented a man on his shoes and he lit up like the Fourth of July.
The Rita Hayworth movie that the prisoners were watching was Gilda. Gilda being Rita Hayworth's most famous role.
@@nikolatesla5553 Thanks!
Fun fact: "He looks so young in that picture!" The photo of Red in his youth is a picture of Morgan Freeman's son, Alfonso. He also has a bit part as a prisoner in the yard, I believe during Andy's arrival scene. Alfonso has a much larger part in a movie with his father called The Bucket List. Morgan's voice is wonderful to listen to. I've been watching him since he was a member of The Electric Company, a Public Television Program, which premiered in 1971. My son's middle name is Morgan, after Mr. Freeman. Ok, enough of my babbling! Great reaction as always!!
I love that, thanks for that
I love to take a bath in a casket🎶
CLASSIC!!!!!😂🥰❤️
Wouldn’t the last 2+ years have been easier for us all had Mr Freeman been narrating it for us?🤔🥹 National treasure, that man….
One of the few movies I rate as A+. Incredible story that hits every emotional nerve in your body. Impossible not to love this one.
The operatic song that Andy played over the loudspeaker was from The Marriage of Figaro. It was the Countess and her servant, Susanna singing “A new song of the air” in which they were referring to the first play, The Barber of Seville, when the Count used to get letters from the Countess (before they were married) on the back of sheet music she’d drop him from her balcony. A gorgeous Mozart duet.
Love it
one of the best movies of all time, Andy and Red's friendship development was the best part of this movie as they kept one another company and were happy when they were reunited in the end. Movie is a straight 10/10
As usual, it was fun seeing you laugh at the funny parts. This movie is a great roller coaster of emotions and there are many "low points" as you called them. We go from hope to despair quite a few times throughout the story. For another Stephen King story with the same director, check out "The Green Mile" from 1999. And for another movie of the same director but more cheerful check out "The Majestic" from 2001.
My Green Mile reaction is coming out on Friday
The Majestic (2001) is a really good movie. One of few in which Jim Carrey has been allowed to show his acting chops in a bona fide dramatic role rather than something purely comedic.
There is a great little clip on RUclips of Bob Gunton (The Warden) announcing a 25 year anniversary get together and screening of the movie back in 2019. He ends the clip with a great line.
In the book Reds character in a red-headed Irishman, hence the nickname.
By now you know that Morgan Freeman had one of the most recognizable voices ever. He has done numerous narrations on documentaries. And lent his voice to many other types of projects. He’s a Mississippi man, and a Hollywood legend. His movies are ALWAYS worth watching. “kiss the girls” with Ashley Judd is an awesome thriller type film. 😊
That prison is actually 5 minutes from where I live in Mansfield, Ohio. It's not operational anymore but they do tours and have a haunted prison experience around Halloween and Christmas, known as Blood Prison. It is a very big prison. They built the new prison not far from this one. Many parts in this movie were filmed around mansfield.
I just read this and it makes sense;
"Andy fought in World War II. It fits the movie's time frame. It could also be the reason why his wife had an affair: he was emotionally distant from all the things he had seen, so she abandoned him for another lover."
I've seen the movie numerous times and keep watching people react to it. Brilliant piece of cinema.
Oh really, wow. good stuff. I need to read it now
One of my all-time favorites. So glad you watched it. Great reaction!
So good!
Seriously, top 10 all time movies easily. Tim Robbins is absolutely amazing.
It took me a while to realize just what an awesome friend Andy was. After he escaped, he took the time to go to Buxton and bury the money and the note before he started his trip.
well actually here is the deal. I read the book after watching this. So... What was really happening there is Andy had an ex-war buddy on the outside doing all his stock trades with the money leftover from his marriage. But he got cancer and died. All the paperwork is in that little box under the tree. So Andy had to go to that box to get all his stuff before putting the note and $$ in there for Red. In the book he never took any $ from the warden. It was just all his own money invested well for the last 20 years.
It’s in my top 5 all time, thanks for posting, glad you loved it as much as us 👍👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
I love it!
Did a quick scan of the comments because I hate to repeat info but the poster with Marilyn Monroe is taken from a famous scene from the movie "The Seven Year Itch" from 1955. It's about a man whose wife is out of town, which gives him the time to get to know his neighbor (of course, played by Monroe)... with predictable results.
The greatest movie of all time.
Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture but lost 6 to Forrest Gump.
Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, and Robert Duvall were considered for the role of Red.
Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks, Kevin Costner,Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Charlie Sheen were considered for Andy.
The film still holds 9.3/10 on IMDB and was a box office success making $73 million dollars against a $25 million dollar budget.
It made it's TV Debut on TNT and TBS in 1997, where it gained a cult following. It sold 300,000 copies on VHS.
it was just amazing
i like how when Red is released the guards look upon him with some level of reverence
Yes
Such a wholesome movie. Makes you laugh and cry all together. Loved it.
“Are you going to eat that?” “NO!” 🤣🤣
Your reactions are so enjoyable and relatable wether it’s to sad or comedic parts. So glad I subscribed
love this movie so much, never can get through it without crying at Brooks scene
Whoever it is that does your editing is doing a great job. Capturing all the important moments and dialog. Helping your channel quickly become one of my favorite reaction channels. Also loving how you react and how you pick up on things instantly.
Just me, I do all the editing for the channel. Glad you're enjoying the content.
There's a special moment getting to see The Shawshank Redemption for the first time!
This is a movie I didn't really "get" or appreciate when I first saw it. It's resonated with me a lot more as I've gotten older.
And your laughter is so darned infectious ... your sense of humor is not cruel but you see humor in the smallest details just like I do
"i nearly soiled myself"
great stuff james keep em comin
Thanks, Green Mile reaction on Friday!
This was such an amazing and emotional film . So glad to see you react to it. Brooks, the inmate they shot, and the end had me in tears
Great film
Unfortunately, I had a family member who happened to be in the newer prison next to the old Ohio Reformatory, where Shawshank was filmed. After a visit we took the tour. The front entrance area, which housed the warden’s residence is really quite impressive. The rooms used for the movie were left how they were in the film. A Bible with the cutout was sitting next to the safe in the warden’s office. The halfway house interior was also at the prison. The cells used for the movie were the nicer ones. I wish I could include some pictures of the other cells. The prison scene in Air Force One was also filmed there.
Good stuff thanks
In the book, it just ends with him talking about Hope as the bus drives off.
So glad they showed them meeting on the beach in the movie!!!
I read the book after watching this. It was WAY different. He didn't take any money from the prisons.
This is my number one favorite movie of all time. I live about 15 minutes from the prison and have toured there a couple times. They have a big concert there every summer, awesome times.
This box office bomb is on EVERY “top 5 movies of all time” lists. Still is. Probably always will be.
1994/1995 Was an amazing year for movies the nominations for Best Picture were Forest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Quiz Show. Arguably all are considered to be classics though Quiz Show hasn't retained the same popularity as the rest.
ok, several others to get to I guess
Quiz Show is truly what I call an ‘underseen’ film. It’s a WONDERFUL film well crafted around true events in which prime time game shows were fixed/rigged for ratings. Incredibly interesting story in entertainment history!!! Highly recommend!
I love that Andy left his Bible’s bookmark at the Book of Exodus, so apropos.
Also, the collection that this and The Body (the basis for Stand by Me) are in, Different Seasons, has two other novellas. One of them, Apt Pupil, was also made into a film in 1998.
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
The picture of young Red in his prison file is actually Morgan Freeman's son, Alfonso Freeman. The "reeling 'em in" guy when Andy first arrives at Shawshank, is Alfonso.
Love it
Tim Robbins is an established actor of Stage, TV, and film. Hestarred in the baseball comedy "Bull Durham" with Kevin Costner, Trey Wilson, and Susan Sarandon (girlfriend for several years). William Sadler stars is sever Stephen King films. He also starred in some TV sitcoms, TV drama series, and the sequel to the "Diehard" movie, Robert Gunton is a film and stage actor. He starred as Juan Peron in the Broadway production of "Evita" with Tony winner Patti Lupone. Clancy Brown starred in "Dexter", "Billions", "Sleepy Hollow".
Never heard of him till this movie. but... I haven't heard of pretty much most "famous" people.
I have watched dozens of reactions to this movie and you are the first one to mention the methane. I love your entire reaction.
Thank you so much. Welcome to the channel. I hope you check out some of my other content.
Great reaction! Happily subscribed. Thanks for all the content!
a fun detail most people miss: when the cutout for the rockhammer is revealed, the page it begins on is the start of the book of 'exodus'.
love it
The scene when they are flipping Andy's cell is more intense after watching the movie for a 2nd time..knowing what he had and what he was doing.
Saw this as the back end of a double feature with Pulp Fiction because no one was going to see it. We walked out talking more about Shawshank than Pulp Fiction. Great film.
I haven't seen Pulp Fiction yet.
Both The Body, which Stand By Me is based on, and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption are in the novella compilation "Skeleton Crew". I read them as a kid and adore both the film interpretations because they capture the tone and dialogue of the story so well. The best King adaptations are the most faithful! Try Dolores Claiborne, starring Kathy Bates. She is a tour de force!
I'll need to check them out
“Hi Jake!” …..just lovely…. Nice edits you rock⚡️
It's James, but thank you so much.
8:03 Everyone thinks he finds a maggot in his food, but maggots are tiny, house fly larvae. That was a grub worm that he found.
I'm sure you're correct
That upward plot twist is what makes the movie an absolute masterpiece. Awesome reaction. I appreciate you laughing about all the jokes, few people do.
There was some funny stuff in that movie
An absolute masterpiece of 90’s cinema. I wish someone would make a sort of “sequel” to this, but not like a direct sequel, a film with the same premise or story but with different characters and character development and stories.
I envy you getting to discover all these movies for the first time, same with everybody listening to the music I grew up with in 60 s and 70 s. I love your reactions and sense of humor and try to see whatever you do with movies I’ve enjoyed. I try to give you some movies to see don’t know if you get them. Can’t afford to be a paid subscriber so I watch you tube
James Whitmore who played Brooks was also the older man who was the pitchman in those old Miracle-Gro TV ads years ago.
I don't know those sorry
They’re is a reason this is preserved in the library of Congress one of my top 100 movies
agreed
I’ve watched this movie so many times! Very real and realistic! And who couldn’t listen to Morgan Freeman talk all day!
This is one of my husband's favorite movies.... I love it also... this movie is great... my husband has watched it SO MANY times over the years... the thing I think that is different about your channel from the other reactors is that you are of our generation not some young kid... it's like taking someone I've known for years to see these shows ... someone who lived through all the crap I have...
Haha I love your intros telling us about when you were a cow boy etc, great stuff!
Nope, no cows. We did have chickens & lots of corn.
There is some great foreshadowing. Andy talks about having a fishing boat and Red says "This is a shitty pipe dream"
Oh I didn't catch that.. funyy
Definitely in my top 5 of all time favorite movies! Such great characters and story.
Thanks to your Patreon members for requesting this! They've got great taste! 😁
Agreed
So glad you got to watch this masterpiece
I acted in Shawshank for two months. Great experience.
Wow I'm sure you have some great memories.
That prison, is from my home town, Nashville. I used to work down the road from it. Ironically, the locals called it Disneyland. It had been used in several movies.
Really? The prison according to the DVD director's commentary as well as IMDB is Mansfield Reformatory - 100 Reformatory Road, Mansfield, Ohio, USA
Weird based on comment below
awesome movie, love your reactions, so genuine.
Thank you so much!!
Imagine if Andy had to change cells just before he completed the tunnel.
That would be so bad.
I've always ranked this as 2nd on my list of saddest movies, a far and away second behind the first movie, The Green Mile, because Shawshank has a happy ending. But it is a great great movie. I really love Morgan Freeman narrating and his speech about hope at the end.
This movie was unfortunately up against Forrest Gump in the '95 Academy awards best picture nominees and even though there is no second place award in them, we all know this was a close second to Forrest Gump. Maybe any other year, and it may have won.
My Green Mile reaction comes out on Friday.
I'm just like you. While my brothers played video games and my sisters played with barbies, I read books. My mom had a huge bookshelf full and I read them all. But I did see this movie and must admit its a classic must see!!! I do agree about the confusion when just looking at the picture, it doesn't do the movie justice.
Great reaction. This is arguably one of the top ten movies of all time. I'm glad you finally got to see it.
The movie with Marilyn Monroe's skirt is "The Seven Year Itch". Not necessarily a great movie...but fun for its time, and containing that iconic scene. Marilyn can scratch any itch ;)
Thanks for the info!
@@AwesomeUSMovies If you're interested in watching a Marilyn Monroe movie, I'd suggest The Misfits with Clark Gable... the last for both of them.
I always felt that her two iconic roles were Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and, of course, Some Like It Hot.
Love this movie and love your reaction. This was fun with you. More please. 😊
We will!
Really enjoy this film and have seen it many times One of my faves
Thanks for the chance
Actually, the movie was shot at the Ohio State Reformatory. The film was said to take place in Maine, a favorite location for Stephen King stories.
This movie was shot on location at a prison in Mansfield Ohio. The prison itself has been closed for sometime nowl However, you can take tours of the prison and see the movie memorabilia and they say the prison is haunted. So you can also take the haunted tour.
Love it
I enjoyed watching this with you…I’ve seen it so many times. Your Brook’s reaction really touched my ♥️! I recommend Slingblade! ✌🏻☀️
This might be my favorite reaction to this film! Your sheer delight in Andy’s promotion to financial advisor was delicious.
So glad you enjoyed it. Green Mile reaction coming out Friday
Shawshank Redemption is often considered the best movie ever made. And I have to agree.
same
You are absolutely right...our judicial system is a total mess! Glad you see it for what it is!
The short stories that "Stand By Me" and "Shawshank Redemption" were based on were both in the book called "Different Seasons". Worth a read.
Thank you so much for this.
Stand by Me was called The Body.
Great reaction to one of the best movies ever made. Rollercoaster of emotions, the lows are really low (Brooks 😔 ), and the highs are hilarious. And of course - Morgan Freeman narration!
The bright side of you not seeing these movies when they came out, is that you can now experience them for the first time, thank you for sharing it with us.
Glad you enjoyed it I sure did
James Whitmore was the actor who played Brooks, and introduced himself to many audience members in the 1990s with this film.
Andy knew Red was negative in his thinking and didn’t have any hope. He wasn’t too excited about the harmonica Andy gave him, and he even referred to himself as being an institutional man.
Andy feared that if Red ever got out he would end up just like Brooks. So he made him promise he would go on that little scavenger hunt and planted the note and money after he escaped - even though he made it sound like it was already buried there. Andy was always looking out for his friend Red.
The last words you hear Red say have the word “hope” repeated several times. For the first time,.....Red had hope.
Andy never lost his hope. Red finally found it.
It was Red that was redeemed in this story. 🙂
Well said
Such a classic! So glad to see it again!
Fun fact: Tim Robbins is the tallest Oscar winner!
Oh cool, good one
the marylin monroe scene with
the blowing dress is from ”seven year itch.“ it’s like an nyc subway vent blowing up inside her dress
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
@The Viewing Room 10/4 corrected
Morgan Freeman was in a 1970's kids show I watched growing up. In the beginning he's shown jogging, but not really wearing an exercise outfit, which wasn't real common back then, so it was unclear what he was doing, other than maybe in a little bit of a hurry.
Then one day my younger brother said "Do you know what he's doing? It's called jogging. It's a new type of exercise. I learned about it in school."
That's funny
@j a conner Do you remember
I like to take a bath in a casket🎶 ???
I always say And people wonder why we Boomers have issues😂 Morgan singing to us in a bubble bath, in a casket, as a vampire🤣
And somehow- he managed to pull even that off!!!! 🏆
Re: I’ve always thought the 3yr run in Forrest Gump implied he started/was responsible for the jogging craze. Thoughts?
Great movie, glad it had a happy ending, also liked the part they named the library after brooks 🙂
This movie is a masterpiece from beginning to end from beginning to end amazing actors the story is great music is really good it's good good nice for much more
Trivia: 21:55 That is Morgan Freeman's son. And, I quote Ted in Ted 2 (When speaking to Morgan Freeman): "I want to make a bed out of your voice and lie in it!"
Alan Greene was an agent who helped get the rights to make a movie from this novel, but he passed away before the movie came out.
oh that's sad.
King's books are incredible. Was a huge fan of his novels while in HS. I was always reading books back then.
I've just stayed away because I don't like horror
Why did you stop reading? He still has good novels.
@@AwesomeUSMovies Well you're going to miss out on many many good movies to react to.
You're not a legit reaction channel until you have reviewed the Shawshank redemption. One of the best movies of all time
One of the best movies of all time. Morgan and Tim were brilliant. The narration by Morgan is of highest quality as was the content. This and the Green Mile are simply the most entertaining and wondefully acted and directed movies.
I love this movie, you’ve been reacting to great movies.
If you enjoyed Tim Robbins in this, he was in a movie the same year called “IQ,” a romantic comedy with Walter Matthau as Albert Einstein. Meg Ryan plays Robbins’ love interest. It’s really underrated. Morgan Freeman is amazing in this.
you didn't shed a tear I couldn't be that strong
Many people rate this the best movie ever made. Great choice!
thanks
Arguably, one of the BEST films ever made. You can look up countless "top ten movies of all time" videos, and Shawshank, is literally almost at #1 every time.
love it
