It was one of Stephen King's stories in his book Different Seasons, a four story back, under Hope Spring's Eternal. The name was Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. This, and Green Mile, a miniseries of books by Stephen King, are two of the best prison movies.
The movie is about both of them. They are polar opposites of each other, yet they needed each other. Andy is innocent and Red is guilty. Andy has hope and Red does not. Andy has the strength to keep his mind free and Red does not. If it weren't for Andy, Red would have never regained hope and the will to live.
Probably deliberate, but when Brooks is released the shot still shows the prison. When Red is released, it shows the outside. Very clever. Great reaction.
Another little touch,,, in the time,,,, Red rode on the BACK of the truck and the back of the bus. Andy's hammer was hidden in Exodus! The escape or deliverance.

Seriously, I have never been "into" prison films, but I truly believe that this is one of the best movies ever released.
When this movie came out in the cinema's, there wasn't much inerest. But when it was put for rent and shown on the tv, millions of people watched it and liked it and that how it became the best movie ever made.
Every once in a while I’ll learn something new I didn’t see before in one of my favorite movies. From your reaction video, I learned that 1) the justice system - more importantly, the surveillance system - has made it nearly impossible to get away with what Andy and Red were able to, (as a caveat, it’s probable that there’s a new way to escape Big Brother’s eyes, but it’s certainly not the same) and 2) a very realistic explanation for how/why Red was able to remember the name of the town Andy had mentioned. Shit, right before I watched your reaction, I’d seen another, and the guys were joking about if Red hadn’t been able to remember that name - it’s something I’ve always thought, “How in the everloving f could anyone remember that name?” and y’all NAILED it. Of course Red would remember it so immediately, because there would be so little that would differ from the day-in/day-out routine - you’d remember very well anything that wasn’t a part of that. Evening. The prison this was filmed at it was the old Ohio State reformatory and Mansfield, Ohio. The main building that you see and cell Block one are now preserved as they museum. They do tours, mystery night, overnight if you’re brave enough because they say it’s haunted . The city scenes, halfway house, and the E and B Market was on fourth Street. I was lucky enough one of the local people that got to play a con in the yard. The premiere of the movie was held at Mansfield ‘s Renaissance theater A restored 1929 movie palace. Then it had premieres in New York and Los Angeles. On a sidenote, crows from about seven counties come in to Mansfield to live the winter. There are hundreds of them sometimes. I’m glad you enjoyed the movie. I’m now 75 with Parkinson’s, so I watch a lot of reactions on RUclips since it is hard for me to go to the movies.

Not only do schools look like prisons, they feel like one too. A place you are forced to waste a good chunk of your life learning pointless and useless curriculum. I recall when leaving school I learned more in the month following than I did 3 years prior. At least this was the case in the 80's/90's. Nowadays it seems like schools/universities are more interested in telling you what to think instead of teaching exercises that make you think for yourself.
Learning to read, write, think critically, and socialize in a variety of ways is not a waste. Perhaps you went to a terrible school with little opportunity. But schools are only as good as the community they are in. So look around your community and see what’s wrong if you are so unhappy.

The prison is still there. You can tour it. It’s in Mansfield Ohio. They have the warden’s office set up, the wall where the parolees carved their names, you can go see the rock wall in the field.
The guard is Clancy Brown. He has been in a lot of things, Highlander, Starship Troopers. Most young people know him as the voice of Mr Crabs in SpongeBob.
Captain of the Guard is played by Clancy Brown who was Kurgon in Highlander, the drill instructor in Starship Troopers, and is the voice of Krusty the Krab.
There was also a deleted scene in this movie, where during lights out on the day Red finds out Andy escaped, he was laughing super hard. Got 2 weeks in the hole for it
That was one of the best scenes in the book. After the tunnel was discovered, they sent a skinny guard in to find out what happened, and he could be heard saying, "Smells like sh!t...oh sh!t, it IS sh!t!..." and puking up his guts. Red fell down laughing, and Norton promptly sent him to solitary...but Red didn't mind, because he'd just think of it and start laughing all over again. That scene was filmed...but fell flat with test audiences. Frank Darabont figured out why...as well-liked as that scene was in the book, it just didn't work onscreen, because once the audience saw that tunnel, they wanted to know how Andy did it, not take a five-minute detour with some character they'd never met. It worked a lot better with the poster being ripped off the wall...then smash-cut to the police cars racing towards Shawshank.
When they are remodeling the prison library, Andy is looking at the blueprints of the prison. This little tiny detail is one of many throughout the film that he was planning his escape all along.

I noticed a comment that this is Red's story, and that is true. I think everyone has interacted with someone else who eclipsed their view of life; that was Andy to Red. Andy's character was the catalyst that redeemed Red's lost hope; that, despite all obstacles and set backs, he could act on having a future.
Clancy Brown is the sweetest man on the earth. I know he played the head guard in Shawshank, but I was fortunate to know him personally. His brother and my ex played division 1 football together. He couldn't be at the games all the time, but he was like a big brother to me when he could be at the games. He was great! Clancy Brown is underrated at what I am an amazing actor and person he really is!

What was funny was back when I saw this in 1994, I'd read the book. (The day after I saw Stand By Me at fourteen, I bought a copy of Different Seasons, and eventually read all four novellas.) So I knew the plot. My friend Alan, however, didn't. His reaction at the tail end: "Wait a minute...a STEPHEN KING movie with a HAPPY ENDING?! No cosmic killer clowns?! No Pac-Men eating up the past?!"

Yes...this is based on a book or short story by Stephen King (I can't remember because I read it as a teenager, and I'm 57 now). It's one of the best films I've ever seen.

The movie is not about Andy. It's about Red. He is the one redeemed in Shawshank. Andy didn't need to be redeemed, he was innocent.

I noticed a comment that this is Red's story, and that is true. I think everyone has interacted with someone else who eclipsed their view of life; that was Andy to Red.
Andy's character was the catalyst that redeemed Red's lost hope; that, despite all obstacles and set backs, he could act on having a future.
Clancy Brown is the sweetest man on the earth. I know he played the head guard in Shawshank, but I was fortunate to know him personally. His brother and my ex played division 1 football together. He couldn't be at the games all the time, but he was like a big brother to me when he could be at the games. He was great! Clancy Brown is underrated at what I am an amazing actor and person he really is!

@@patrickbateman7369 That's true of a lot of actors who regularly play villains. From what I hear, most of them are great people IRL. My theory is that they get to exorcise the dark side of themselves in their performances, where it doesn't hurt anyone.
This movie is easily in my top 5 favorite movies. The story and the characters are so well written👏🏼 Also Morgan Freemans narration is just next level.👍🏼

The original title of the book was, Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption. The movie is actually about Red, not Andy.

What was funny was back when I saw this in 1994, I'd read the book. (The day after I saw Stand By Me at fourteen, I bought a copy of Different Seasons, and eventually read all four novellas.) So I knew the plot. My friend Alan, however, didn't. His reaction at the tail end: "Wait a minute...a STEPHEN KING movie with a HAPPY ENDING?! No cosmic killer clowns?! No Pac-Men eating up the past?!"

Yes...this is based on a book or short story by Stephen King (I can't remember because I read it as a teenager, and I'm 57 now). It's one of the best films I've ever seen.
The only movie I know that men and women like equally as much. It really is a masterpiece.
