    Thanks for the reminder me. my elephant garlic was delivered a couple weeks ago and has been sat it the fridge waiting to be planted. Think they cost me about £23 for 24 cloves.

    I picked up two packs of two garlic bulbs and one onion set from Wilkos at three for two. So the whole lot cost me a fiver! What a steal.

    I love to grow garlic and onions because our neighborhood woodchuck doesn’t eat them! This year it will be a lot of garlic. The ‘round’ information is interesting. I especially treasure the scapes.

    Great video Steve. Your right about the price of the bulbs from specialist growers being expensive. Did the same as you with the elephant garlic last year and bought a single bulb and have planted 30 cloves this year. A quick tip if your on a budget, get yourself to Lidl. Bought a couple of their garlic for 49p each and planted up last year. Well impressed with the resulting bulbs which were as good as the more expensive ones. Don’t know what the variety is but it is a hard necked one.

    2:30 I'm running an experiment right now where I'll plant my own garlic but the cloves I use for seeds are always the biggest of that blub. It's a very casual endeavour. I think I've planted two (?) in a conatiner. This reminds me though that I should get a move on and plant the rest. I think I'd like to try growing some different cultivars as well. I like growing more then one variety at a time for almost everything because, in my head, it helps with disease resistance.

      I put some on my hedgerow with last years parsley and the garlic did quite well considering it was never given any manure or watering and the parsley loved the well drained soil so like you I'm going to try some welsh leeks next and experiment a bit more.

    I've planted around 300 cloves, mainly my own saved Provence Wight and Messidrome, plus a few other bits and pieces grown last year from 75% off reduced end of season stuff.
    I daren't leave my garlic un-backfilled as birds would drag them out or rats would eat them. I had enough trouble rotorvating the 'tectonic plates' of heatwave/drought dried topsoil without having loads of extra work replanting them.
    Lost all my Elephant Garlic to white rot at my last allotment site, 90 poles but it spread from plot to plot. Now up to 25 poles at our new site, so might start growing again. I always thought of them as a bit of a fun crop, especially when our daughter's 'food technology' teacher's recipe called for "one clove of garlic", and I gave her an enormous EG clove bigger than a whole bulb of garlic.
    When they start sprouting I'll spread a mulch of shredded autumn leaves amongst them, not that they need protection from extreme cold, but to protect my clay soil from puddling/compaction from winter rains, plus to inhibit weed growth . Then they'll only need one light weed next year before harvesting.
    As for developing your own localised strain of garlic, check out online for commercial growers who believe they get better yields by importing their seed garlic from other areas, such as Scottish garlic growers importing their seed garlic from Canada

    Great video today Steve. I am working my garlic bed this weekend adding manure layer topping with fresh layer of compost. Monday I will plant the garlic about 150 I think. I cover with 4" of straw for the winter here in Minnesota zone 4A. I am watching several videos today you had a lot of great information today. Thank you for this video today. Jane also had a great video yesterday on garlic! It is by all the different bits of info adapted to my area and climate really helps me to get to a good harvest sooner. You really got me thinking of elephant garlic I am going to see if I can still source it this year to plant soon. Cya tomorrow in the Potty mouth

    Having been a garlic grower that has planted up to 35000 cloves and over 300 varieties of garlic, including Solent Wight. I can tell u its not uncommon for garlic to lose size for a little while. But if u keep planting the largest cloves from the Largest bulbs u will get the size all back and maybe more. So u giving up on what u have planted is something you should not do. Its the Starting point.

    Your elephant garlic looks amazing. I did not grow this year and I have missed it. Do you do your shallots from seed or sets? I tried seed this year and they seem to be storing better than the sets have in the past.

    I’ve had my Solent Wight in the fridge for a couple of weeks to give them a period of cold temp before potting - not sure if it helps or encourages splitting of the cloves but the garlic bulbs usually turn out ok at harvest.

      I think it depends on your climate if it's needed or not. Can't harm though. I do it with about half of mine

  • @kgarden8960
    @kgarden8960 Год назад +1

    I bought some Elephant Garlic last year ... just assumed I would get 6-8 cloves from each, and hadn't realised that I would need to bulk up "stock" over a number of years ... several of them didn't split (this year) ... so I have ordered some more, and in doing so I shopped around so, in case helpful to anyone else, price per clove: D.T.Brown and Mr Fothergills £2.79[5], £2.23[20], The Garlic Farm £1.82[6], £1.41[12], Kings Seed £1.19[10] and Simply Seed £17.99 for 500g - no idea how many cloves that is! based on mine I reckon approx £1.00 each

    • @kgarden8960
      @kgarden8960 Год назад

      My order from Simply Seed has arrived and there were 20 cloves - probably too small to split for next year, but for me that's fine as I want to build up "stock". So that would be Simply Seed £0.90[20] much cheaper than the rest 😃
