- I made a video where I demonstrate and talk about one of my favourite synths, the Ensoniq TS-12. I walk and talk through some of my own patches as well as some presets and then I make a new sound. I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks!
Great video Miles. I bet this video will make the old Ensoniq crew really proud (and perhaps a little sad). You made me hunt down and buy a TS10 this week, collecting it tomorrow . Thanks!
Was it as good as hoped?
Just FYI, The SD-1 was a great improvement over the VFX (more polyphony, less buggy, and more transwaves) and the TS is the upgrade to the SD-1, Surprisingly though the TS does have less waves than the SD-1 but the TS series have true wave sequencing which is the bomb over the VFX and the SD-1 so in my opinion if you get any of them my recommendation is any of the TS series.
Great review. This is one of the few times I actually like the presenter speaking. That patch n you made after you spoke about bacl pedaling is awesome!
The Ensoniq synths were awesome sounding.
I own 2x TS 10, 1x Ts 12, 2x ASR! I love them no modern keyboards can beat these keys!! believe me I have tried different kinds of new Keyboards, ended up returning or selling them away! ensonqs are Glued with me for the rest of my live that's it
Midi Controls are 10/10 Volume Expression/Sustain pedal/ 2 switch midi inputs can be used for 4 too with double pedals) / midi command assignable buttons 1 to 10 each have 6 buttons/ pitchband/modwheel/ 2 patch midi buttons/velocity curves/Aftertouch sensitivity !
keybeds are the best 10/10 velocity/Aftertouch are the best I have used from all the keyboards around the world, excluding the Kurzweill 2500, 2600 series!
thickness of the sound are 10/10
and the keyboards made in early 1990 aren't they impressive ? hell yessss
Have you felt the Roland Fantom G8?
Thought I wanted the VFX SD, based off your last video.. now I realize this is the one. Great demo!
This is my favorite synth and I own over 50. The one thing I would love to take with me to the afterlife---how could it be heaven otherwise?
list?
The VFX is now my favorite synth also, even over the AN1x.
Actually my favorite synth changes depending on what sounds I create.
Doesnt the TS12 read the ASR 10 and work well with it???
That string patch at 8:26 is simply incredible.
M Tomasi thank you ☺️
ghost orb floats by at @15:39 jus sayin
wonderful synth great demo and patches
Thanks ☺️
PS: I dont mind if the videos are longer :)
Possiblt the best synth show eva
Awesome video! Found this after a session with my TS-10 this evening when it decided to start resetting itself intermittently. Amazing bits of gear, I love the huge set of effects they bundled with these things. Anyway, looks like I'll have to pull mine apart this week and work out what is failing... PS: Subscribed! :)
Stuart Brightwell thanks so much for the kind words, I might make another video with the TS12 and the Octatrack today
One of the best synth keybeds is the one from the esq1 metal version. I love that key bed. Dx7 is another great one but I do like ts10 the most
Cool sounds! I like the Ensoniq TS10/12.
super nice!
Cool attack on patch 3:40
The dirty patch is cool too ! And more patches have that unstable factor [ chorus or PITCH-lfo ] that I remember from the CTS2000 and the SQ1.
Nice thing that you talk us through the patches, so we have more info.
The TS10 and mirage is on my list . . . :-)
Great video, very helpful to see you poking around. I haven't investigated the effects editing yet, got my TS-12 a week ago. Anyway, thanks :)
I acquired an ensoniq ts 12 a while back that needs a bit of work on it but still puts sound out. I only paid 60 bucks for it!
Niceeee, well done 👍
O wow, that’s really a steal.
I need to fix the main output and I need to fix the keys
@@seemose I am restoring a zr76 keyboard at the moment. It has 3 missing key weights . They were broken off. The noisy ness can be fixed. It will never be fully silent though. That’s the way a fatar keybed is by nature. What’s wrong with the output?
@@Johnsormani the output level fluctuates. I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with it. Its such a heavy keyboard to transport and I cant find anyone locally to help me with it.
Hey Miles, thanks for posting this vid. I learned a lot and will have to rewatch it to get my head around the synth which i have recently bought. Good one for making the effort to show us a synth that is probably gathering a lot of dust out there but has a depth of sound that is still valid dont you think?
christopher LIAUBON absolutely, it's still completely valid and I use it all the time
i have a TS-12! DO you have any of your custom patches on a floppy? would be awesome!
not sure if anyone gives a damn but if you are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my gf for the last weeks xD
@Preston Jasper definitely, have been using instaflixxer for years myself =)
Man, nice video! BOC fan here, how hard was it to create those BOC sounds? I've just got a TS - 12 and would love to have the same ones.
Wow, nice patches! About creating an INIT patch you can actually use the "Select Voice" button, then "Copy" button, and then push the button where it says "Default" on the display. Kind of does it, It's not a perfectly "clean" INIT sound though, just as with ESQ-1 the Envelopes are set up in a certain way, and some other settings you still have to set yourself. But it's a shortcut at least.
There are also envelope templates to choose from using the "Copy"-button. Always a bit confused by Ensoniqs.
That's correct but you can init the envelopes using the copy->default as well.
Did you switch out the floppy drive for a USB adapter? I'm considering doing the same with the TS12 I recently acquired.
I have also been curious about this option - can Ensoniq Disk Tools create an Ensoniq Formatted USB drive (or even SD card for that matter)? I have not been able to find a clear answer to this on the Chickensys site.
Hi Miles, thanks for the video! In which city are you located :)
I'm looking at getting a 2nd hand Ensoniq ESQ-1, SQ-80, TS10 or TS12, budget is AUD 300-1000 depending on model...
Can someone please tell me pros and cons of each model?
I know SQ-80 has disk drive and aftertouch, but I read somewhere the ESQ-1 had a more durable keyboard?
How do the different keyboards compare in feeling? I don't like too heavy hammer actions...
I could use it for piano playing, but would rather have it perform properly as a synth..
If need be I would buy a separate digital piano with weighted keys. (I'm a beginner player and will be focusing on piano for a while)
But I just looove warm 80s analogue type synth sounds...
Did this ever exist as a rack mount/module version? I had an SQR long, long ago. It had limitations and the samples were pretty noisy. But there were sounds I programmed that no synth I've used since has approached. I also borrowed an ESQ1 and got deep into programming it, to the considerable benefit of its owner, I have to say. I absolutely loved it. Would quite like an Ensoniq in my setup again.
I have both keyboards as well . The sd1 and the ts12 I made a comparison video you can check out . But I still after all the years really understand how to link all the LFO to the envelopes I do understand the filters and I play around a lot to get my sounds the way I like them . I do have the owners manual . What would be the best way to learn how to use it more efficiently rather then just play around ?
awesome patches. dave smith instruments should hire you.
First Last lol thanks 😊

I’ve been thinking about getting one of the ensoniqs for a little bit now. Broadly speaking is there anything to look for/at when checking these out?
Make sure it properly powers on. A lot of times they will display an error message that will just infinitely reset itself. Unplug the power cord, and try again.
It's metal, so check for rust. Make sure the patches also load. Sometimes selecting a patch will trigger a reset as well. Not sure why (if someone knows, please inform me)
How do I make form and back round music??
For the sound I’m looking for I think this board will do. I have the system 8 but I just can’t get the sound that I want.
Thanks a lot!
Is it convincing for punchy arps or basses? Or is the vfx more suitable for that?Thx
Indie Moon they're as good as eachother for that, they're very similar. I'd say you could get some nice arps but I wouldn't say it's great for bass but it can do very 80s sounding basses
Thanks!
Hi there, great video, thanks so much. Is it possible to sent the midi to a daw programm, I'm using Ableton Live!
Can you do more how to vids on this synth with step by step? I just bought one!!!
I wish I could but I sold it a few years back, sorry 😭
great sounds! how do you compare this synth vs the vfx-sd? it seems the the ts can do everything the vfx does and much more. thanks!
Tilo funny you should ask, I've made two videos about the VFX-SD as well so you should probably watch them. But yeah, your assessment is pretty much spot on
im hearing those! i can hear somo difference on the audio, maybe the vfx sounds a little bit deeper?
Tilo the VFX has a dirtier sound, the samples are a lower bit rate and the FX are darker sounding
@@warmnatural I think the sample rate is the same but the dac’s are just different sounding
Wicked. I'd like to grab a TS-10/12 or a VFX. Already have an SQ-80. Which one would you go for?
kluge thanks! 😊
I guess it's a difficult decision to make, they're both very similar. The vfx is older and sounds grittier, and has less features. The TS12/10 is a lot more flexible and sounds way cleaner. I prefer using the TS these days but I'll always have a soft spot for the vfx. Did you watch my vfx video too?
Yup, watched them both. Great idea showing the programming process, it's something that you usually don't see much of with older (esp digi) synths. I see that you have some Elektron boxes, I've always felt like they're a modern take of the ESQ-1/SQ-80 menu page style of programming and I really dig it, have a few of them too. I think I'll wait around for a TS-10 deal.
Do you feel like you're left wanting with the TS's transwaves?
kluge compared to the VFX-SD? Not at all, they're very similar. The TS12 sounds technically better
@18:00
Never mind, must've missed this on the first viewing. You've sold me on a TS. Cheers!
TS-10 and TS-12 are remarkable better than the VFX or you can go in between and get the SD-1
Had a TS10 but the effects were glitchy in it. I'd rather the 12
Are you using your TS12 with a DAW. If yes, what DAW are you using?
Ellen Soomers I use Ableton Live, my Ensoniq gear is hooked up via midi and get fed through a Audience Mico preamp straight into my audio interface. Pretty basic setup really. I also control the Ensoniq gear with my Octatrack sometimes
Thanks so much, glad it's possible! I have a Motu 8 pre firewire interface, I guess that should work to. I know the TS12 has a midi through, I was just wondering, since my keyboard has lived on my attic for 12 years, if a recent DAW programm can still handle the data sent from an old keyboard like that. So happy to know now that I can still intergrate this awesome piece of equipment in my homestudio. Thanks so much for your help!!
Ellen Soomers yeah that's the great thing about midi, its super old and is still the standard. I don't control Ableton with the TS12, it's just a sound source for me, but you totally could use the keyboard to play soft synths
Thanks Miles, good to know!!! Have a great day!
Damn Vangelis vibes! I have a TS12 with the BankSet button broken. Very sad times :/
That’s should be an easy fix
short note i used to have a VFX and an ESQ-1, the VFX to me sounded awfull, the ESQ-1 rearly good sound. but thats just my opinion.
