@P Ivan Sanchez In the navy, I was a navy nuke EM, made E4. Then I got kicked out for having a blue falcon of a room-mate. Afterwards, I left and I had the insight "You must create", and create I did, I created many profitable products that people loved.

I don't regret joining the Navy but God damn I can't wait to be a civilian again...

  • @flyoverkid55
    @flyoverkid55 7 лет назад +37

The military isn't exactly like a civilian job and it can't be. But there are some similarities. If you make the commitment, keep it. If you lose perspective you'll be miserable and it's all downhill from there. Keep your head in the game, save your money when you can, and 4 years will cruise by.
If you're not sure, don't do it. Get some advice from others who have done it, do your homework on job selection, and don't lie to yourself about what you're getting into.

This is an excellent video with respect to income putting it in a nutshell as an enlistee. I've seen some YT videos of guys in their early 30s enlisting (they were in fit shape) and to them they were very happy with regards to the compensation and benefits in the military while others who were in the military since their early 20s thought otherwise commenting that civilian jobs pay much better. But what was stated in this video is a very accurate picture of civilian work life versus military work life.
As for officers and civilian graduates, military officers are ahead. Nowadays I see college grads working retail for $9 an hour as it is still very hard to get a foot in the door where one can use their degree. A 1st LT on the other hand takes home $4k a month plus benefits.
Thank you for the great video!!!

Make sure you join for the right reasons and with the right job for you. Recruiters will straight up lie to you about undesignated rates. I’m a Vet now and finishing my degree at 30 and wishing I had completed this sooner has lead me to have a bit of a mid life crisis.

military may only pay you 15$ an hour as a nuclear technician but you dont have half the bills as someone working for 15$ as a civilian so youll save much more. you have waaaay more potential after 4 years with buying a house getting a 6 figure job. going in at 17/18 allows you to have a much higher success rate when your 21/22 than any one else you know. you can buy a house in pretty much any location with the lowest interest rate possible and have a guaranteed job related to your military career. plus if you really like it you can retire in 20 years

What's up, young buck! Good for you that you can find the benefits that work for you in the Navy; nonetheless, spending one's whole career in the Navy is not something anyone can do. It all depends on how much you grow as time goes on. I like to be in the Navy because I like to have a different job every 3 to 4 years. In fact, if I'm not gonna have a job of my dream when I get out, I'll probably die of the boredom from keeping an uninteresting job for more than five years. Every 3-4 years, I move to a different place, meeting different people, and experience more things. It's been 10 years, 1 month and six days... Only 9 years, 10 months, and roughly 24 days left for me. By the time I get out, I'll have retirement money, disability benefits, M.B.A. degree, a job as a civil service employee... things may change. By the time I'm 65, I'll either retire or die depending on how long God let me live :-)
Good luck on all your endeavors:-)

The military is best summed up as 10 mins of excitement followed by 15 hours or boredom. Hollywood only shows the 10 mins. When people learn about the 15 hours, they realize how different the military is compared to what they see on TV/Social media.

i regret joining the army n being given the job, chemical operations specialist. though i had chemical suit on correctly, the chemical weapons converted by body to diabetes type2. now today, 20 years later, my body n mind is destroyed. i have heart failure, kidney disease stage 3 among many other things. i was physically n mentally abused in the army fer my full 2 years. my second choice going in the military was the navy. when i went to go sign my army contract, the recruiter asked if i really wanted to join the army. my gut was telling me to tell him, no, i'd rather want to be in the navy. i would not have minded being a navy paralegal, or work in security forces or work with the chaplains. at meps, the army career counselor told me to go to waiting area he going find me a job. he did not give me a chance to tell him any army jobs i might be interested in. i hated my army job plus the sergeants, most of them were abusive assholes. these days i'm a proud veteran n defend the good honor of the veteran corps verses the disrespectful nfl players, n now the nfl commissioner. i hate being called a civilian. i happily correct others by telling them i am not a civilian, that i am a proud military veteran.

Just watched your Finance series videos--BRAVO!! You're one of the few military bloggers who embrace the financial opportunities of the service and using it to your benefit (although using the ROTH TSP would be worth looking into).
That said, a good deal of all of the active duty military bloggers (like yourself) are planning on getting out at the end of their first hitch (an interesting correlation). Nonetheless, most all outgoing military vloggers seem to be hitching their star to becoming the next RUclips superstar, traveling the globe and filming their cats, edited to annoying, identical, royalty-free soundtracks....without any consideration as to how to support their lifestyle other than hopes of future colabs with Casey Neistat.
You, on the other hand, are refreshingly different with great, relevant videos about how to grow your financial arsenal which will enable one to have options just incase Casey doesn't return the text or tweet.
What I would like to ask you, is how you are planning financially for your exit from the military and how you plan to replace the secure salary & moreover, the medical benefits you now have access to. I know you have a plan, I would like to see it in a vlog--and I'm sure it will help other troops coming up for separation also.
As a retired vet, I can't thank you enough for providing this much needed financial info to our young troops. Thanks for serving & keep up the great work.

Yoon thanks for sharing your insight. I was want to add that the military is what a person makes out of it. Once youre in you have to work those long hours and yes you develop good work ethnics but its up to the person to apply it to the civilian world once they get out. I know many people who are just plain lazy and they were military and I also know people who are the complete opposite . As far as pay goes when you in its easy to save especially full time. You don't really have to worry about food ,utilities, insurance, and rent. You only do when you go back to the civilian world. Secondly if you work 16 hours a day for 7 days that's 112 hours per week. With a civilian job that's 40 hours regular pay and the rest ot. With minimum wage pay that's 40x10= 400 and 72x15=1080, which is 1480 a week about 76k a year.

I just watched a documentary about the navy and how one guy signed up for 5 years and all he does is janitorial work all day. He does it dawn to dusk. He expected to learn a skill and do a job to have pride in and get money for school. He is constantly in trouble because he feels betrayed at having to clean shit all day. Beware of the expectation and what the reality will be. Do the research and be sure you want to give up so much for a shit cleaning job for the government.

The Post 9-11 and/or Montgomery GI bill is great after the military. 4, 5, or 6 years of service depending on your contract. During your service in the Navy, other branches might be different, if you are lucky enough and work hard within a 5 year contract I would say associates would be realistic. Then get out and use your post9 or Montgomery.

Yes, I personally preferred to join a branch where I don't have bullets flying at me.

Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine in that order.
Preferably Air and Navy. They are more of what you know than what you do.

make sure you stretch well. As long as you've practice running you should be fine. They don't make you run a lot for long durations.

Shin splits come from inflammation. Go keto/low carb .
I was a high school athlete and got shin splits all the time. I'm in my 30s and I can run 5k with no problem

hey mrc2051, I would go with navy. My bf has been in the army for 10 years and they're known to really just throw people around and send them anywhere. He even told me not to do army. Navy is all about jobs and keeping you there. The air force is great too and my friend just graduated boot camp. The only bad thing (which is kind of a big thing) that i have to say about the AF is that you don't get to choose your job until you're in boot camp. Example, my friend that graduated wanted to do Aerospace Medical Services (basically nursing) and she got an awesome asvab score of 85 so it seemed really likely that she would get it. I received a letter from her just the other day and she told me that she didn't get it, even though it was available and she had it as her first choice, and that she got contracting, which is a basically a supply clerk. The worst part is, there was another female with a 40 on her asvab that actually got the nursing position. That's just concerning to me. Sorry for the rant but i would go with NAVY (which I am in btw, ship date 20170501, with the job that I wanted)

Hey bro. What are your thoughts of joining the navy with a family?

    • @MrYoonKim

      My thoughts,
You won't spend time with your family as much as you want when work gets rough. Out at sea, 12 hour days, etc.
However, it is a great way to support your family and appreciate them even more.

Appreciate both of yal answering my questions. I've decided to go with the Army. They give me a guaranteed chance of being a dental assistant in the reserves, joining the SMP program once I gain 30 credits and at the same time to be contracted to ROTC and commission. Gives you an opportunity to earn your salary from the reserves, educational benefits from the reserves, ROTC benefits, and be able to serve in your reserve unit as an Assistant officer pretty much. I've already got the process started as far as paper work and won't be taking the ASVAB till next year.
